NFL Legend David Carr Says That Joe Montana Is Not A Top 10 Quarterback

There are unpopular takes and there are asinine takes. This take falls onto the latter. Does anyone remember David Carr? Of course you don’t. Carr put on a 49ers uniform during the Mike Singletary days and saw game action for an injured Alex Smith during all of three quarters. That was enough for the 49ers to decide to put third stringer Troy Smith in at quarterback while Alex Smith recovered. Carr’s time in San Francisco will be remembered for one chant.

Well, Carr is out of the NFL and an analyst for NFL.com while his younger brother, Derek tries to not follow in his footsteps. Though the word “analyst” should be used loosely because because when they talked about the top-10 quarterbacks of all time Carr left 49ers hall of famer Joe Montana out. Just omitting him could leave our imaginations to do the rest, but Carr attempted explaining why:

“I’ve been in the pocket, I understand. Bill Walsh is a genius, Bill Walsh is a genius, and Joe Montana arrived at precisely the right time just like the white wizard Gandalf, he arrives precisely when he intends to. Joe Montana showed up from Notre Dame. Bill Walsh is a genius. The defenses they were facing were not even close to being ready for this. This was a walk in the park. This was 7-on-7 against junior high kids. They had no idea what they were seeing with the shifts, and the motions, and the ball out on time. Steve Young is a far better quarterback.”

He's absolutely right; Montana played for a team that couldn't lose.

He was being sarcastic calling Carr a legend and insinuating he's a nobody with no clue and his opinion means nothing.

Montana was still great after Walsh was gone.
    1989 first season without Walsh.

I get it. I didn’t bother reading what he said but yea it pretty hilarious that loser has the nerve to suggest Montana isn’t one the greatest.

In fairness Carr was so bad at diagnosing defenses, recognizing pressure that he did take lots of shots, prob screwed his brain all up.

Carr remembers the 1980s very well.
He was born in 1979, this makes him an expert.

Is he suggesting he wouldn’t have been horrible if he was in Montana’s shoes??

Does anyone here believe he could have ran the offense? I know the ages not right but If Carr was niners qb instead of Montana we might never have heard of the west coast offense!!! Imagine how banged up Carr be had he played in that area where you were allowed to crush the qb!!! He prob be dead!!

Don't be too tough on the Carr Brothers. After all, they went to Fresno State and got their 3rd grade education there.

    yEAH, what a stupid comment.

Why can't BOTH Walsh + Montana retain legendary status? If u read the fine detail on Bill Walsh's coaching career...Bill would say that his best coaching job was as Off Coord of 1970 Bengals. They won the division w/ Virgil Carter as QB.

I've seen some Walsh interviews. He literally gloats about winning w/ VCarter. It was like stealing $$, b/c Carter had a pop-gun arm. But the key was that Walsh changed the offense + discovered the value of the short-pass. West Coast Offense invented + rest was history.

Bill laid the ground-work. 1989 Niners were basically Walsh's team.

I like David Carr, he's usually a humble straight shooter.. Surprised he was quoted saying this?

For the record Montana was alot better then David Carr will ever be and yes Montana is top 10 of all time. He's not top 5 though, probably top ten.. Joe was solid.. Jerry Rice can confirm that..

Who dare call David Carr a legend also?

I understand what he's saying he has a point but not sure that still doesnt make Joe not top 10 when you play in a great system it makes your job so much easier we tend to just look at the results. at notre dame joe was a 52% completion qb with 25 tds and 25 ints if u saw that from anybody else youd say this guy prob isnt gonna be good let alone great but sometimes the perfect system and great coaches who are way ahead of everyone else at that point along with great teammates which can put you in situations that make you look a lot better than you actually are

as far as precisely the right time it can be said for almost all the greats. magic's timing of arriving with kareem. pippen coming along a few years after jordan AND getting phil as coach. warriors drafting klay, draymond, and steph 2 years apart and kerr becoming coach later. aikman, emmitt, irvin. 49ers drafting jerry rice in montana's prime. timing is always huge in sports legacies. Brady and Belichick further proof. Gretzky and the great oiler teams.
