NFL Player News - Week of 3/4/19

    Courtesy of Footballguys.com

Eagles | Nelson Agholor unlikely back on current deal
Philadelphia Eagles WR Nelson Agholor likely will not play at his current cap number of $9.387 million in 2019, according to beat writer Jeff McLane. The team picked up his fifth-year option last year, but it's likely they'll re-work his contract or release him. McLane adds that the team could try to trade him, but his salary will probably scare off teams.

Eagles | Nate Sudfeld to compete for backup job
Philadelphia Eagles QB Nate Sudfeld will have 'to compete for (the backup) spot', even with QB Nick Foles out of the picture, head coach Doug Pederson indicated. That means the Eagles are likely to bring in a veteran to challenge Sudfeld for the backup job behind QB Carson Wentz. Sudfeld is a restricted free agent and the team has until March 13 to tender him a qualifying offer.

L.Bell is running out of teams that can pay him the big dollars. He’s going to regret not taking that deal Pitt offered him last year $70M with $20M in guarantees.

    Tuesday Update

NFL | Andy Isabella draws lofty comparisons
University of Massachusetts WR Andy Isabella 'has a cool natural wide base that allows him to handle sharp turns like a race car,' according to Senior Bowl executive director and former NFL scout Jim Nagy, who believes Isabella is comparable to T.Y. Hilton and Brandin Cooks.

Browns | No timetable for Kareem Hunt suspension
Cleveland Browns RB Kareem Hunt is expected to be suspended for his off-field issues, but NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy said there is no timetable for a decision.
Footballguys view: We'll know soon enough but the league has no reason to rush to any decision. It seems like Hunt is going to get a lengthy suspension from the league when a judgement is finally made.

Dolphins | Teddy Bridgewater not an option for Miami
New Orleans Saints impending free-agent QB Teddy Bridgewater is not expected to receive interest from the Miami Dolphins in free agency.
Footballguys view: Bridgewater is looking for an opportunity to start, and the job should be open for the Dolphins. It seems like that team is tanking so they can get one of the top-notch quarterbacks in next year's draft.

NFL | Four teams interested in Dwayne Allen
Free-agent TE Dwayne Allen (Patriots) has received preliminary interest from the Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins and Detroit Lions, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Allen can work as a blocker and receiver for any team he goes to. The Patriots would have interest in him coming back at a lower price. Given the reported interest in the veteran tight end that doesn't seem likely to happen.
    Link to story

Browns | Breshad Perriman, Browns far apart on deal
Cleveland Browns impending free-agent WR Breshad Perriman and the Browns aren't close to agreeing to a new deal after general manager John Dorsey and Perriman's agent met at the NFL Combine. Dorsey said he would love to have Perriman stay.

Broncos | Denver has no interest in Antonio Brown
Contrary to an earlier report, Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown has not been and will not likely be a player of interest for the Denver Broncos, according to Mike Klis of 9News.
Footballguys view: This contradicts earlier reports indicating the Broncos were one of the teams most intrigued by the veteran receiver. The move never made sense for Denver as they have a duo of young receivers (Courtland Sutton, DaeSean Hamilton) and Emmanuel Sanders as their top three targets.

    Wednesday Update

Cardinals | Arizona has not reached decision at No. 1
University of Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray may end up being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, but Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury insisted on the Kingsbury Chronicle podcast Tuesday, March 5, that the team does not know yet what player it will take with that selection.

South Carolina WR Deebo Samuel's meeting with the San Francisco 49ers at the NFL Combine was just one of 20 such meetings. Bills | Buffalo to meet with Dwayne Allen
Free-agent TE Dwayne Allen (Patriots) is scheduled to meet with the Buffalo Bills after he finishes his visit with the Baltimore Ravens Tuesday, March 5, according to a source.
Footballguys view: The Bills could use some help at the position, especially since they moved on from Charles Clay earlier this offseason. Allen is a good blocker and could be more of a receiver than the Patriots used him as over the last two seasons (only 13 catches combined).
    Link to story
    Dwayne Allen player page

Eagles | Philly talked to Rodney Anderson
Oklahoma RB Rodney Anderson formally interviewed with the Philadelphia Eagles at the NFL Combine. Anderson didn't run at the Combine and won't run at his Pro Day as he continues to recover from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
Footballguys view: Anderson's college career at Oklahoma can be summed up by the saying 'what might have been.' Injuries in multiple seasons derailed what was looking to be a promising time with the Sooners. He's flashed enough power and ability at 220 pounds to get interest as a fourth-round pick if his medical tests are positive.
    Link to story

NFL | Kyler Murray met with five other teams
Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray met with the New York Giants, Jacksonville Jaguars, Washington Redskins, Los Angeles Chargers and Seattle Seahawks during the NFL Combine last week.
Footballguys view: Those teams are just hoping that the Arizona Cardinals don't take Murray no.1 overall. At this point, Murray is looking like the top pick in the draft.
    Link to story

Chiefs | KC starts contract talks with Tyreek Hill
Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill has begun contract extension talks with the Chiefs on what is expected to be a record-breaking deal, according to a source.
Footballguys view: A fifth-round pick in the 2016 NFL draft, Hill has far outplayed his rookie contract. It's not outlandish to think he could become the highest paid receiver in the league. That title currently belongs to Odell Beckham Jr. at $18 million annual average salary.

Steelers | Jesse James may not return
Pittsburgh Steelers impending free-agent TE Jesse James likely will receive more money in free agency than the Steelers are willing to offer, in the opinion of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Gerry Dulac.
Footballguys view: Earlier reports indicated the Steelers might keep James around. More recently, the tone has changed and now it looks like James could move on. He's not a 'first wave' free agent but should find a home in the second wave next week sometime.

    Jesse James player page

Ravens | John Brown wants big deal
Baltimore Ravens impending free-agent WR John Brown is expected to seek $8 million to $9 million per season in his next contract, according to sources.
Footballguys view: That's quite the price tag for the speedy veteran. We think he could wind up with the Buccaneers, reunited with head coach Bruce Arians. That of course all depends on what the Bucs do with DeSean Jackson.

Lions | Detroit to meet with Dwayne Allen
Free-agent TE Dwayne Allen (Patriots) is scheduled to meet with the Detroit Lions after his visit with the Buffalo Bills, according to a source.
Footballguys view: The Lions need a weapon at the tight end position since letting Eric Ebron go last offseason. Allen is a good receiver but he's more of a blocker at this point in his career.

Cardinals | Josh Rosen not being shopped yet
Arizona Cardinals QB Josh Rosen was inquired about by multiple teams at the NFL Combine, but the Cardinals have not responded to any inquiries and gave no indication that Rosen is currently on the trading block. That does not mean that he will not eventually be traded or at least be shopped, however.
Footballguys view: Will they or won't they? The Cardinals seemed destined to take QB Kyler Murray (Oklahoma) no.1 overall just a week ago at the Scouting Combine. Now, it seems like that might have cooled just a bit. There's no telling what's going to happen but reports indicate teams are checking in on the availability of Rosen.

Cowboys | Jason Witten officially back
Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten was officially signed to a one-year, $2 million contract Wednesday, March 6. Witten can make up to $5 million, however. The Cowboys had to release Witten from the Reserve/Retired list before making the signing official.
Footballguys view: And here we go again. Witten should play a part-time role for the Cowboys offense this year. That is unlikely to make him much of a fantasy factor in 2019.
    Link to story
    Jason Witten player page

Ravens | Robert Griffin staying put?
Baltimore Ravens impending free-agent QB Robert Griffin III desires to stay in Baltimore as the backup and help QB Lamar Jackson develop.
Footballguys view: Griffin is a good backup option to Jackson because their games are somewhat similar. We'll see if the Ravens want to keep him around.

Colts | Tyrell Williams of interest to Colts
Free-agent WR Tyrell Williams (Chargers) is expected to be pursued by the Indianapolis Colts in free agency. Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports anticipates Williams will demand $12 million annually.
Footballguys view: The Colts have over $100 million to spend in free agency. They are looking for upgrades at the wide receiver position for guys behind T.Y. Hilton. Williams has a nice size/speed combination and is looking for a larger role than he had with the Chargers in recent years. It seems like a good fit on paper, we'll see if this comes to fruition.

NFL | Three teams vying for Kyler Murray?
Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray met with several teams at the NFL Combine, but Oakland Raiders head coach Jon Gruden is reportedly 'all over' the Heisman Trophy winner, according to sources. The Washington Redskins are known to be interested, while the Arizona Cardinals love him, according to Clarence Hill Jr. of SportingNews.com.
Footballguys view: The news about the Raiders loving him has been out there for quite some time. The Cardinals could be moving on from Josh Rosen, and Murray fits what new head coach Kliff Kingsbury wants to do on offense. Washington just needs to find a starter since Alex Smith may never play football again. Stay tuned.

Panthers | Torrey Smith will be back
Carolina Panthers WR Torrey Smith's option for 2019 has been exercised, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Alrighty then. Smith is due $5 million in 2019, but the Panthers could still eventually cut the veteran receiver with no cap charge. In 11 games last season, Smith caught only 17 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns.

Dolphins | Miami to meet with Dwayne Allen
Free-agent TE Dwayne Allen (Patriots) is scheduled to meet with the Miami Dolphins Friday, March 8, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Allen has a few teams interested in his services since the Patriots let him go earlier this month. He's always been a better receiver than his numbers show but at this point in his career Allen is mostly going to be a blocker for his new team.

49ers | Low tender for Raheem Mostert
Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers restricted free-agent RB Raheem Mostert received the original-round tender offer, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Mostert came into the league as an undrafted free agent. Placing an original-round tender on him means the 49ers would receive not compensation if a team signs him away in free agency.

Los Angeles Chargers impending free-agent WR Tyrell Williams is expected to receive strong interest from the Cleveland Browns in free agency, according to a source.

Saints | New Orleans not pursuing Antonio Brown
Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown is no longer a trade target for the New Orleans Saints, according to sources.
Footballguys view: The Saints could use more weapons around Drew Brees in the passing game. Michael Thomas is a superstar receiver but the other receivers behind him have either been hurt or ineffective. The buzz is that Brown will be traded by Friday.

NFL | Kyler Murray to work out at Pro Day
Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray will participate in passing drills and run the 40-yard dash at his Pro Day, according to a source. He will also have his height and weight measured at the workout.
Footballguys view: There's all sorts of buzz that Murray did not measure in correctly at the combine from the dreaded 'anonymous scout' sources that crop up this time of year. We'll find out that's a bunch of hogwash when Murray measures in at his pro day.
    Link to story

Redskins | Washington agrees to acquire Case Keenum
Denver Broncos QB Case Keenum will be acquired by the Washington Redskins in exchange for a 2020 sixth-round draft choice, according to a source. The Redskins will also receive a 2020 seventh-round draft choice in the deal. Keenum has also agreed to restructure his contract. The Broncos will pay $3.5 million of his 2019 salary, while the Redskins will pay the other $3.5 million. He will also receive a $500,000 bonus from the Broncos.
Footballguys view: Washington has to have a starter in place while Alex Smith tries to come back from his horrific leg injury. Smith may never play football again, so don't be surprised if Washington adds a quarterback in the draft too. Keenum failed as a starter with the Broncos for one year and will compete with Colt McCoy to be Washington's starter in 2019.

Redskins | Washington not an option for Antonio Brown
Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown is no longer a trade target for the Washington Redskins, according to sources.
Footballguys view: Washington needs a lot of work on offense, so adding Brown would have made sense. It sounds like his price tag was too high for their taste.

49ers | Pierre Garcon will not return
San Francisco 49ers WR Pierre Garcon had his 2019 option declined Thursday, March 7, and will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
Footballguys view: No surprise here. It just didn't work out for Garcon with the 49ers, mainly due to injury. Perhaps a team like Denver could add him since he fits the system new OC Rich Scangarello is going to implement.

Raiders | Antonio Brown's contract an issue
Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown is a hot trade candidate for the Oakland Raiders and head coach Jon Gruden would love to acquire him. However, the 31-year-old Brown wants a new contract with guaranteed money on his new team, which could be a hindrance for the Raiders.
Footballguys view: Brown certainly wants a lot. He wants to be traded from Pittsburgh and he wants a new deal for whatever team he lands with. The Raiders might be posturing here.

I wish AB had ended up in Buffalo...would have been funny.

I know he’s bagging on Big Ben, but from what I recall, when Ben was hurt an extended period a couple of years ago, AB’s numbers were just average. I think he may be thinking too highly of himself.

Cardinals | Ricky Seals-Jones receives offer
Arizona Cardinals exclusive rights free-agent TE Ricky Seals-Jones received a tender offer Friday, March 8.
Footballguys view: Seals-Jones posted a career-high 34 catches in 2018, performing like a TE3 for Fantasy GMs. We'll see if the team utilizes him differently with new head coach Kliff Kingsbury and his 'Air Raid' offense.

Patriots | Martellus Bennett returning to NE?
Retired TE Martellus Bennett is interested in coming out of retirement and signing with the New England Patriots so he can play on the same team with DE Michael Bennett, according to a source.
Footballguys view: The Patriots have been looking for tight end help and Bennett would be just that. With the uncertain status of Rob Gronkowski at this time, Bennett is a player worth monitoring in dynasty formats.

Dolphins | Danny Amendola let go
Miami Dolphins WR Danny Amendola was released Friday, March 8, according to a source.
Footballguys view: No surprise here. The Dolphins are going in a different direction that doesn't include Amendola. Look for him to get a job with a contending team in 2019.

Eagles | Philly has interest in Tevin Coleman
Free-agent RB Tevin Coleman (Falcons) will be squarely on the radar of the Philadelphia Eagles when free agency opens, according to NFL Network's Mike Garofolo, who adds the Eagles will have company when it comes to competing for his services.
Footballguys view: The Eagles have a clustered backfield right now and that may not be attractive for Coleman. He may want to get a chance to be a featured runner for his next NFL team. We'll see if the Eagles can outbid other teams (Denver?) for his services.

Cowboys | Allen Hurns back in the fold
Dallas Cowboys WR Allen Hurns, OL Joe Looney and LB Joe X. Thomas had their 2019 options exercised Friday, March 8.

Chiefs | Carlos Hyde to have a role?
Free-agent RB Carlos Hyde (Jaguars) could see significant playing time after agreeing to a deal with the Kansas City Chiefs, in the opinion of Adam Teicher of ESPN.com, because of general manager Brett Veach's preference for bigger backs. 'I kind of have a thing for 220-pound backs that can run and catch and block,' Veach said.

Dolphins | Dwayne Allen joining Miami
Free-agent TE Dwayne Allen (Patriots) will sign with the Miami Dolphins, he told ESPN's Josina Anderson Saturday, March 9. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the deal is a two-year pact worth $7 million, per a source.
Footballguys view: That didn't take long. Allen was released by the Patriots about a week ago and had more than a few teams interested in his services. With the Dolphins, Allen should work as a blocker while second-year pro Mike Gesicki should take a step forward as the receiving tight end.
