The first of two Monday Night Football games features Sam Darnold making his New York Jets debut against the Detroit Lions.

Here are our best bets on the game from Warren Sharp and Mike Clay.

New York Jets at Detroit Lions (-6.5)

Sharp: I'm extremely excited to see rookie quarterback Sam Darnold play (he'll be the NFL's youngest-ever Week 1 starter), but I'm not so certain he gets off to a tremendous start Monday night. The Jets will be best suited to go more run-heavy against the Lions' No. 28 run defense from 2017. That is because No. 1 wide receiver Robby Anderson will get locked up with cornerback Darius Slay when he lines up outside, and Slay does great shutting down opposing teams' top wideouts. On the other side of the ball, I'm more optimistic about Matthew Stafford playing at home with the same complement of WRs from last season. The Lions were aggressive with the passing game, attacked deep on early downs and have the ability to target RBs out of the backfield with several great pass-catching options.

However, they also improved their running game, adding LeGarrette Blount for short yardage and drafting the promising Kerryon Johnson. As a result of terrible rushing and higher-volume passing, the 2016 and 2017 Lions converted a league-low 49 percent of third- and fourth-and-short plays. It was an even worse 44 percent last year. That meant more punts, fewer points and less time of possession.

If Detroit can improve that rate, it will be able to drive longer and farther and produce more on the scoreboard.
