NFL starting to take a hit financially with less people watching

Here is an article stating "NFL ratings dip forces TV networks to repay advertisers"
I say good; too many commercials, and too much BS in this league. I refuse to watch it anymore on TV.
    https://finance.yahoo.com/news/nfl-r...205733576.html

The NFL’s television ratings decline this season is beginning to make a dent in the bottom line for major networks. Broadcasters like CBS and NBC saw sharp increases in audience deficiency units (ADUs), or “makegoods,” which are payments they must make to advertisers when ads do not receive the promised volume of impressions.

In other words, fewer people watching football means fewer eyeballs to see ads, and the networks that broadcast NFL games are paying the price.

The major football networks all took a major hit last month in NFL ad revenue—the money they bring in from advertisers that pay for air time during football games.

In the month of November, NBC’s NFL ad revenue sunk 17% compared to last year, according to new data from the Standard Media Index. CBS saw a decline of 26% (earlier this month, AdWeek points out, CBS chairman Les Moonves boasted at a UBS event that “there have been no makegoods” on any of the network’s NFL broadcasts this season). Fox saw a 34% decline in its NFL ad revenue.

To be sure, some of these networks have less football to show this year, and thus less ad space to sell. CBS is showing one less NFL game this season than last season, and Fox is showing three fewer games.

But NBC is showing the same number of games as last season, and NBC saw the biggest decline of the three. It was because of makegoods.

The makegoods that networks must hand to advertisers come in the form of free airtime—they repay their obligation by giving the advertisers ad space in a different slot. SMI, which tracks more than 70 percent of all national TV ad spending, found that NBC and CBS gave away 20% of inventory as ADUs in November 2016, compared to just 5.2% and 11%, respectively, a year earlier.

There is no public consensus over exactly why football has steadily lost viewers this season. The league’s official stance early on was that the election cycle was distracting from football, but six weeks after the election, ratings have continued to fall.

Industry experts (and President-elect Donald Trump) have pinned the decline on everything from poor matchups on the field, to the availability of highlights on social media, to the crackdown on player touchdown celebrations, to outrage over the national anthem protests by Colin Kaepernick and other players.

But now the struggles of America’s national pastime have begun to affect the bottom line for networks, eating into what would have otherwise been a 5.3% increase for a TV industry that is combatting its own demons in the shape of other streaming platforms. In November 2016, the overall TV market was down -2.4% year over year.

“November was a fascinating one for the sector with a lot of moving parts. The final days of election coverage, a challenging football season, and a revitalized retail sector all contributed to the market delivering a modest gain,” said James Fennessy, CEO of Standard Media Index, in a statement. “Poor football ratings earlier in the season, combined with fewer games this month, finally caught up with the major broadcasters.”

Though the major networks have all taken an NFL ratings hit, Fox has been able to mitigate some of the damage with a small handful of big games, most often featuring the Dallas Cowboys, the No. 1 team in the NFC. The Thanksgiving game between the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins was the most-watched regular season NFL game in FOX Sports history, according to the network.

A 30-second ad on the three major networks still commands big money, averaging about $590,060 per unit, according to SMI.

The NFL is well aware of its ratings issue. Last week, the league announced it will experiment with the frequency of ad breaks during its Week 16 games, and with the number of ads that show during those breaks. The hope is that viewers will return.

To be sure, football isn’t going anywhere, and some experts downplay the current crisis. CBS chief research officer David Poltrack told investors at a conference this month that although the fumble in ratings was “quite a shock,” there is still “no reason to conclude a seminal change” has taken place in the appeal of TV’s most popular sport.

Yup, CNBC begin running segments asking if this could happen last week, it's coming and now it's going to trickle into the sponsors.

NIKE and FORD came out and tried to walk a tight line by offering support for both sides....lets see how that plays out, Budweiser, Pepsi, Under Armour are staying quiet for now but in another week I'd expect some serious ultimatums.

If I had to guess the league will be gone by 2040. Youth participation trending way down, ratings trending down. It's definitely not going to be gone tomorrow like guys here think either, but something needs done.

It's hard to see such a huge league go kaput, but I can't really disagree with you either. There are many reasons people have stopped watching - the kneeling, domestic violence, brain injuries, terrible officiating, excessive commercials, moving teams to LA, etc. The league has a lot going wrong, it'll be interesting to see how the long term future works out.

and yet they blame it on amazon.com and internet buying

maybe they should look at the malls around the milwaukee area (and other cities that have become too minority driven), and see why shopping is way down... when i go to mayfair all i see is thugs yelling at each other and calling each other n.igger

same with movie theaters, i don't need some screaming baby in the theater when i'm watching an r rated movie

so there are many reasons people are staying home

The NFL as a product is really bad. Gamblers and Fantasy players (most gambling on fantasy) are the only things keeping it alive. The League knows it and still it shuns the base that's keeping it alive. Once the gamblers get tired of being treated like criminals by the very product they bet they'll move on and the league will see a big fall from grace.

The NFL is nearly unwatchable with the poor play, constant penalties for barely touching a player, and bad matchups in prime time spots. People aren't turning it off because of the current protests, people are turning it off because it's simply a bad product. It's also over extended from a talent perspective and large markets are over saturated. Also it wont be long (if it isn't already) before it's suffering from baseball syndrome because games are far too long with all the commercials and breaks in action.

My last gripe with the league is that nobody can hit anyone anymore. Sure, CTE is a valid concern but it's a risk the players accept and they're compensated handsomely for that risk. Most of these players go to college and *DO* have the option to pursue a degree and make a decent living not playing football. If you want to make millions, be it football or otherwise, there are risks associated with it. The players themselves knew the risks and would rather have the money than pursue a career in something less detrimental to their overall health.

Ratings were up 3% across the league this past weekend and people still tune in to watch the Cowboys.

Cowboys-Cardinals got a 9.3 overnight rating for ESPN, easily the highest-rated Monday night game of the year...... For the weekend as a whole, ESPN and CBS were up, NBC and FOX were down, and on aggregate ratings across the NFL were up about 3 percent from Week Three last year.

Nice safe way to protest, accomplishing nothing. How about going into the welfare neighborhoods and protesting drugs, gangs and black on black crimes?

Only in California and Texas but not across all of America LB.. NFL better take control of it's employees the players and coaches now or it's gonna be rough sailing ahead..

NBA has next.. You just know all those NBA black players are gonna run wild with this protest stuff.. Lebron and Step leading the charge.. NBA will fold like a cheap suit as well if they take this same road to disrupt the National Anthem to make a statement.. America doesn't like or appreciate this.. Keep the protesting out of the National Anthem..

I felt emotionless during the games this week. I have been a diehard, game attending, merchandise buying, KC Chiefs fan since the mid 80's and for the first time I can remember I didn't feel anything for KC winning or losing. My family has held 1st + 2nd row endzone tickets for over 30+ years and for the first time I can remember, I have no desire to attend a game. I usually get a set of tickets for one or two games a year and I just put my share back into the family pot after this week. This was also going to be the first year my daughter attended a game and I just can't bring myself to go. I just can't get my love for the league back. Sure, I enjoy watching the game and still place bets but the passion for the sport is just gone. They have become just numbers and statistics on the field for me (I happen to love statistics). Don't know if this will change but what they did over the week has done massive damage that I'm not sure I can repair.

yeah, and he would be living in a straw hut, foraging for wild berries and experiencing
mad toothache, sour stomach and no running water and tzetze fever if the white man
never invented the things that brought his fame such as basketball, television, rubber
for his sneakers and even the damn clothing on his back.

Typical neo-con clown. Gets proof ratings went up on a week when Trump sh!t on the NFL and immediately has an excuse that the bar was lowered. If Trump was so powerful why didn't the ratings plummet farther?
