Ross Martin felt he should’ve won the New York Jets’ kicking competition.

The 24-year-old was cut after spending the summer battling Chandler Catanzaro. For the most part, Martin outperformed the veteran, so it was surprising he was the one let go.

Martin was not the only one caught off guard. He tweeted on Saturday to thank New York fans and the media and to express that he didn’t quite understand the move.

“Many thanks to all Jets fans and media who have been so supportive!” he wrote. “Sometimes decisions don’t make sense, but it’s all part of God’s plan.”

Martin and Catanzaro were neck and neck when it came to in-game accuracy this preseason, but Martin performed far better on the practice field throughout training camp.

The Jets were concerned with Martin’s abilities on kickoffs, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini. He wasn’t getting enough hang time or distance. Martin had just two touchbacks in nine preseason tries, while Catanzaro went 3-4 in that department.

Still, it comes a surprise the rebuilding Jets opted for Catanzaro. While coaches pay more attention to kickoffs than fans, Martin clearly had the better summer.
