Has more to do with the fact that his teams have underachieved for over a decade and have been out coached in every big game as well.

Yes but the Mixon thing hurt him

I am a Mixon fan, think he is a big timer in NFL

Made huge mistake and hopefully never hits a woman again

I think violations will be coming down. Why leave 2 months before the season? Unless he's sick - which I hope not.

He quit cuz he hasn't been relevant in a few years. 2 years ago losing the playoff game by 50 isn't relevant for him and that school.

They are fed up with him at OU. Gives him a chance to take a year off and then get another job. They move in Riley as the head coach and he goes out a hero and then can get a job he wants more without the trouble of leaving OU behind and looking like a sellout.

Bob Stoops will be next head coach of the Florida Gators. He might have already signed the contract.

So he will be new coach at another school while remaining the special assistant to the OU athletic director?

    Should be exciting...Can't Wait!

I think it's for most of the reasons you guys said, but this IMO was the lynch pin. He as no longer getting elite talent, he was an easy fade when it came to going against a team with an innovative offense, and as a result the team was fading from relevancy. He probably felt like he had to play dirtier than he had been before.

One of the best though, you can't deny him that. Top 20 in my book.

Has to be more to this story. Has to be a forced resignation but why? Is Oklahoma still paying a lot of money?

Why would anybody say - I want to retire and be a special assistant?

I guess Oklahoma can afford it. Top 20 coaches do not grow on trees - the timing is just so weird.

    Poor Oklahoma.
They have the Thunder going down the toilet.
Now Oklahoma U looks like they may morph into Nebraska.
Both Nebraska and Oklahoma are godforsaken locales that
will look back on their glory days.

Who would be able to get recruits to come to Norman, Oklahoma
    in this day and age?
I've been to Norman and there is nothing to attract a star recruit that's for sure.

I wish the Sooners the best, but it looks bleak.

or maybe he just wants to enjoy his life away from football while he is still young enough to do so.

These college coaches that coach forever these days are crazy. I get it in the pros because you have a nice off-season. in college these guys are working 24/7 365 days a year.

The retirement was too sudden, I doubt that was the reason.

Usually with these snap-retirements, there's some real nasty shit behind it.

There are ways to get people to come to Norman, Oklahoma and they are very effective.

Probably, nowhere, Big bucks special assistants pay probably makes it worthwhile to do nothing.

Bob Stoops retiring from Oklahoma, then going to coach Auburn would be akin to Nick Saban retiring from Alabama, then going to coach Oklahoma State. It makes no sense.

I hope he goes to the Barn , 4 years they will still be paying 5 firmer coaches .
Bowden to keep quite on banging every 18 yr old around
    Tubberville
    Chizic
    Malzahn
Only thing worse than the coaches they hire is the committee overseeing coaching results .
