As for that article...it wouldnt surprise me that the 'confirmation' people wanted to find in it when it cited 'one story circulating' was probably this very thread. So you used an article that cites this thread as 'proof' that it happened. Talk about self fulfilling.
But it really surprises me that in this day and age people still cling to these romantic stories of thes so called legends. if the computer age has taught us anything it is that these guys dont make shit at actually betting on the games, they make it all in their free contests winning big prize pools not actually cashing tickets.
Not to mention the taxes taken out of a wager like that, if it was actually made. A "smart" guy doesnt like laying vig let alone another 35% on top of that in taxes. But dont let money and actual accounting issues get in the way of a good story I guess.
Regardless if he did bet 2 million on the Colts, which at the time was -200 then where are all the experts here calling him a square when it has been available at -185 at more than a few spots, and if that bet really was made why would it go down?
The bottom line is that betting on the NFL is borderline insanity anyway, and betting on the Superbowl for the most part is not something anyone that likes money is really going to go out of their way to do. But it is the biggest sucker game in the biggest sucker sport (for betting) so people like to make or break their reputations by claiming they did all kinds of fancy wagering with it. Or made the biggest bets of their lives on the game. because they know that next year if they lost most will forget, but if they happen to win they can always talk about how "last year I had so and so and won mega bucks". That's the beauty of it.
The fact that the books are willing to take that type of action proves that the game is for suckers, because all year you're lucky to get down a grand at most of these dumps on a side, and now all of a sudden they are taking million dollar plays like its the 1970s and Benny Binion is reincarnated or something.
Either way it doesnt really matter I suppose. But it makes for some reading anyway.
