The NBA season begins this week with 28 teams plotting ways to disrupt the Golden State Warriors vs. Cleveland Cavaliers showdown that already feels inevitable. But others around the league are quietly pondering something that may be more realistic: Is there a day when the NBA surpasses the NFL?

This idea isn’t as crazy as it sounds. The NBA has some of the biggest stars in sports. Their fans are young, diverse and tech savvy, in part because the league has let the game blossom online by treating highlights like amuse-bouches. There has been such an explosion of money in recent years that players and owners now find themselves on the brink of a collective-bargaining agreement that will ensure labor peace until LeBron James nears retirement.

The future of the NFL isn’t quite so clear. The most powerful American sports league has been plagued by critical issues over the last decade, from concerns about head injuries to decreases in youth participation. But not until recently did the NFL’s popularity actually suffer. This season the quality of play seems to have gotten worse. The television ratings have, too. It’s a swoon that strikes at the heart of the game.

The NFL's ratings are down 29 percent this year and many fans attribute the drop to players protesting the national anthem.

According to a Yahoo Sports and YouGov poll, 40 percent of NFL fans said they are watching less football because players are following Colin Kaepernick's lead and taking a knee during the pre-game rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner."

People don't like guys like Kaepernick and what they stand for so they don't watch I don't blame him there's other platforms to protest but not the national anthem.

Two years ago, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban called the NFL “hogs” heading toward a slaughter. He pointed to the league oversaturating its audience with a good product and called it an act of greed as the NFL marched to expand televised games and offseason coverage.

“Just watch,” Cuban said in a March 2014 conversation with reporters. “Pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered. When you try to take it too far, people turn the other way. I’m just telling you, when you’ve got a good thing and you get greedy, it always, always, always, always, always turns on you. That’s rule No. 1 of business.

“I’m just telling you: Pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered. And they’re getting hoggy.”

A few points and analysis of my not so humbled opinion on why the football ratings have declined...and this is talking to my family members, friends, and other peers who are diehard sports fans particularly the NFL....

    1) First and foremost, the NFL has become way too commercialized with sponsorship...in reality, they really don't need all of those advertising dollars...its overkill...the product sells itself and has since day one!...as has been mentioned, this is exactly the reason why the NFL has way too many interruptions, commercials, and stoppage of play and it makes watching the game unbearable...SOLUTION: get rid of sponsors!!...and then you won't have near as many commercial breaks in the game and it will make watching more fun with less interruptions.

    2) Football is being shoved down our throats 24/7, 365 days a year...yes, it's gotten to the point of being overkill...SOLUTION: get rid of Thursday and Sunday night games...they are not necessary...as mentioned in previous posts, only on Thanksgiving day and Monday nights should be extra NFL games.

3)A combo of horrible officiating, too many flags, too many rules changes, and too many sideline reporters....inconsistency among calls, egregious and erroneous calls (and then half of the time, they still can't get it right with instant replay!!)...SOLUTION: get younger guys who want to be officials and train them very well...also promote deserving college officals at all levels if need be...secondly, get rid of all the rule changes and return the game back to how it used to be...people get sick and tired of seeing fukkin flags thrown on every other play...totally ruins the game....as for sideline reporters, get rid of them...don't need them...for years, the NFL did great on televised games without them.

4)too many celebrations, anthem protests, and prima donna's using the NFL as their platform to show off or express their religion, political, or whatever beliefs...people are sick and tired of that garbage...your team is losing 21 - 0, and WR on the losing team catches a 5 yd post pattern and then starts hoping up and down, chest pumping, arm waving, etc. like he accomplished something...and people are getting sick and tired of all the "protests"...hell, the vast majority of these idiot, uneducated jocks couldn't even tell you what they are protesting, or the history of this country, and have absolutely no idea how good they have it...Most of our forefathers were English, German, Greeks, Italian, Dutch, French, and Jews...all immigrants who came from the old countries very poor and with little or no money...they built this country with blood, sweat, tears and hard work....and these fukkin' athletes want to talk about being oppressed?!.

well I could go on and on but these are the main reasons as to why ratings are declining...not only that, but I seriously have to take a shit and drink my morning coffee!...

Definetly due to rule changes regarding hitting defenseless players and qb. That was one the best parts of the game. guy getting creamed going across the middle or quarterback destroyed after getting pressured. Took away all the gladiatorial attraction that drew fans. We want blood and suffering, that's what made it fun to watch. Now it's arena league. Rip nfl

Sunday night is an American tradition. Thursday has to go and Monday needs to be flexed every week.

If the NFL wanted ratings to go up every Sunday Night Football and Monday Night Football.... they should just print out the entire NFL schedule.... and take it week by week... best match ups play on Sunday Night and Monday Night. I think networks like CBS and FOX would be pissed off. Probably in an agreement that the NFL can't do that.

But, definitely those select nights would go up dramatically.

That's ridiculous. You'd only see 10-12 teams every week. The people who have tickets would be upset because they wouldn't know what time the game was until the last minute.

The NFL has tried to shove its product down our throats and proclaimed the product worth our time on Thursday, Sunday and Monday. When every game is a big deal, in reality, none of them are. It also would help if the guy watching at home knew what a catch was, or knew what a penalty was, but these change week to week.

I totally agree. The NFL as a league is being watered down. A lot of the same teams at the top and a lot of the same teams at the bottom. Thursday night needs to go

It’s why Donald Trump is actually echoing the results of the poll on the campaign trail and publicly singling out Colin Kaepernick as the singular reason for the decline in the NFL ratings. Trump and his team of white supremacists and bigots know that such a mention would actually resonate with their base. Think about it. One study stated that 83% of NFL fans are white and also said that registered Republicans were 21% more likely to be NFL fans than Democrats. In other words, a significant chunk of NFL fans are Donald Trump supporters. The only real demographic he is winning is white men without college degrees.

So, of course ratings are down and of course the league wide protests are playing a role. Anybody saying otherwise is willfully denying the role of race and racism in America.

Conservative white NFL fans love their teams and even feign loving the players on those teams as long as they keep their mouths closed about the civil and human rights of African-Americans. Sixty-nine percent of players in the league are black. A few more percentage points are from other ethnicities of color. Those numbers are likely to increase in the years ahead.

What we have right now is the stark reality that uneducated conservative white men hate few things more in the world than a fully free black man — particularly a decidedly wealthy, physically fit, fully free black man who unashamedly and unabashedly raises his black fist in the air during the “Star-Spangled Banner.” That’s exactly what we have the NFL right now.

Last Monday night’s 21-20 nail-biter between the Giants and Bengals was the only ratings buzz kill for the league with 1.4 million fewer viewers (12.1 to 10.7) tuning in compared to last season’s Week 10 Monday nighter between the Bengals and Texans, according to FOX Sports executive vice president of research Michael Mulvihill, who regularly tweets out ratings info.

It continued Monday night’s nose dive in the ratings, with those numbers down 17 percent compared to last season.

The 7-2 Raiders could be a savior not only this week, but for the rest of the season as the team has a national following and is relevant for the first time in 14 years. They have the potential to be the AFC’s version of the Cowboys.
