NFL Player News - Week of 8/22/16

    Courtesy of Footballguys.com

ARI - WR John Brown cleared to return Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban

Arizona Cardinals WR John Brown (concussion) was cleared to practice on Sunday, Aug. 21.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is big as Brown's concussion absence was beginning to get to the worrisome stage. We want to see him play in Week 3 of the preseason, and certainly a second concussion this year will be a problem for Brown, but this news puts him close to his pre-injury ADP.

NE - RB Dion Lewis expected to miss two months

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Updating previous reports, New England Patriots RB Dion Lewis (knee) is expected to miss two months because of his second knee surgery and likely will start the 2016 season on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lewis could play a role down the stretch and we know that on a per touch basis, he is highly productive and efficient. He's worth a later pick in deep leagues where you can stash him, but in short bench leagues, it is difficult to justify carrying Lewis for two months and forgoing multiple waiver wire opportunities.

SEA - RB Thomas Rawls to return in two weeks?

    Source: Seahawks.com

Seattle Seahawks RB Thomas Rawls (ankle) should return 'in a couple weeks', according to head coach Pete Carroll.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It doesn't sound like we'll get to see Rawls in the preseason. If we do it will be in the fourth preseason game, which would be better than nothing. It appears that Christine Michael will get a decent workload in the season opener against Miami and a chance to hold down enough of the work to keep Rawls in RB2 territory instead of the RB1 he was last year once he took over the job.

DET - TE Eric Ebron likely for Week 1?

Source: Detroit Free Press - Dave Birkett

Detroit Lions TE Eric Ebron (ankle) still has no timetable for a return, but there is some optimism he'll be 'ready to roll' by Week 1, according to Detroit Free Press writer Dave Birkett.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The mystery around Ebron's ankle injury isn't comforting, but it seems like it is not serious from all outward indications. At worst, it is probably a high ankle sprain, which would put him back on the field around Week 1 by the typical timeline. Ebron still needs to avoid re-injury upon return, and Anquan Boldin is playing well, so his value has taken a hit since the open of camp.

MIA - Mike Pouncey may miss opener

    Source: ESPN.com - Joe Schad

Miami Dolphins C Mike Pouncey (hip) could miss Week 1 of the regular season after suffering a hip injury against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 2 of the preseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Pouncey hasn't played in 16 games since 2012, and it looks like that streak will add another year. Anthony Steen was an undrafted free agent in 2014 and he has no NFL regular season experience, but he is slated to start for the Dolphins at center Week 1, when they go into Seattle.

DEN - QB Paxton Lynch could start

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Mike Florio

Denver Broncos QB Paxton Lynch has not been ruled out for the starting job, according to head coach Gary Kubiak. 'He's always been in the mix,' Kubiak said. 'Everybody is in competition to play.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is more a sign of how Mark Sanchez and Trevor Siemian have not seized the job than a sign that Lynch has made leaps and bounds of improvement this summer. Sanchez is still probably the best bet to start, but only a slight favorite with the third preseason game likely deciding the starter unless Sanchez craters. Either way, whoever starts will be on a short leash.

NYJ - NYJ wants to see RB Matt Forte in action

    Source: SNY - Ralph Vacchiano

New York Jets RB Matt Forte could 'get a few snaps in' during next week's preseason game against the New York Giants if head coach Todd Bowles gets his wish, according to SNY reporter Ralph Vacchiano.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Forte is being given veteran deference by the Jets coaching staff. He has looked good in his return to practice and should be slated to start against Cincinnati in Week 1 whether he plays in the preseason or not.

DEN - RB Ronnie Hillman likely out in Denver

    Source: 9News.com - Mike Klis

Denver Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman has fallen to No. 3 on the depth chart, and 'it would be a surprise' if they elected to pay the remaining $1.4 million on his contract, according to 9News.com. reporter Mike Klis.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Devontae Booker appears to have the inside track for the backup job, but Kapri Bibbs has been building his status with the team and could figure into the mix too. Hillman should easily catch on elsewhere after Week 1 once injuries start to hit other team's backfields.

ARI - S Tyrann Mathieu practicing Sunday

    Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban

Arizona Cardinals FS Tyrann Mathieu (knee) is practicing with the team Sunday, Aug. 21, about 35 weeks after tearing his ACL.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The typical ACL recovery timeline is shrinking more and more (unless you're Dion Lewis). Mathieu got a big extension this offseason, and it looks like he could be ready to face Jimmy Garoppolo and the Patriots in Week 1.

ARI - WR Larry Fitzgerald back at practice

    Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald (knee) is practicing Sunday, Aug. 21 after sitting out the team's exhibition game against the San Diego Chargers on Friday, Aug. 19 with a slight MCL sprain.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fitzgerald was never a worry even in the wake of this news. He generally plays well through injuries, and this one seems like a very minor issue.

CHI - RB Jeremy Langford sheds boot

Source: Chicago Bears Radio Network - Zach Zaidman

Chicago Bears RB Jeremy Langford (foot) is no longer wearing a walking boot.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

As expected, the walking boot was a precaution and not a sign of an injury that could impact Langford through the rest of the preseason and possibly into the season. He has emerged as the #1 back in Chicago and merits a pick in the mid-rounds, especially for minimal running back starts to drafts.

CIN - WR Brandon LaFell practicing Sunday

Source: The Cincinnati Enquirer - Paul Dehner Jr.

Cincinnati Bengals WR Brandon LaFell (hand) participated in practice Sunday, Aug. 21. He caught balls during warmups.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a good sign that LaFell's hand injury won't keep him from playing Week 1 against the Jets. If LaFell can go it hurts Tyler Boyd's Week 1 sleeper train momentum a bit.

HOU - PK Nick Novak in concussion protocol

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans PK Nick Novak (concussion) is in the NFL's concussion protocol.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Novak has been competing with rookie UDFA Kai'mi Fairbairn and holding a lead, but if this concussion is an issue, it could be put his Week 1 status in jeopardy. You should probably just stay away from the Houston kickers with so many other options in fantasy drafts.

NE - RB James White thrives as receiver

    Source: USA TODAY Fantasy Sports

New England Patriots RB James White was 18th among running backs last season with 54 targets despite playing in just 12 games. He caught 40 passes for 410 yards and four touchdowns.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

White was a fantasy RB1 in PPR leagues last year after Lewis went out, but Julian Edelman was also sidelined and the team did not have a viable second tight end in the passing game. He's still at least worth a second half of the draft pick, and it won't be surprising if White is a startable PPR running with the Patriots early season schedule against stout fronts like Arizona, Miami, Houston, and Buffalo.

CLE - WR Josh Gordon may practice

    Source: ESPN.com - Pat McManamon

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon (quadriceps) hopefully will be able to participate in practice this week, according to head coach Hue Jackson.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hopefully we can see Terrelle Pryor, Corey Coleman, and Gordon on the field next week. The Browns could have a very dynamic pass offense if Robert Griffin III keeps his poise and distributes the ball well. Adding in Gary Barnidge at tight end and Duke Johnson as a receiver out of the backfield will only help.

CLE - Coach wants WR Corey Coleman to play

    Source: ESPN.com - Pat McManamon

Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson said he hopes WR Corey Coleman (hamstring) will be able to practice this week and said it is important for Coleman to play in the preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Friday, Aug. 26.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Coleman is still worth a pick as one of your first bench wide receivers, but if he can't play next week, it could be a slow start for the rookie. He could get a lot of targets in an offense that will have Terrelle Pryor and eventually Josh Gordon stretching out defenses. Coleman's absence has been long enough now that we have to worry about re-injury for his first few practices back.

BAL - QB Joe Flacco expected to play vs. Detroit

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco (knee) has missed the first two preseason games but is expected to play in the preseason game against the Detroit Lions Saturday, Aug. 27.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

All signs point to Flacco being ready to go for the season opener against the short-handed Bills defense. He should be a good streamer with the likely high volume of passes in Marc Trestman offense.

NFL - RB Karlos Williams expects to join new team

Source: The Buffalo News - Vic Carucci

Free-agent RB Karlos Williams (Bills) fully expects to find a new team after he was released by the Buffalo Bills Saturday, Aug. 20, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Williams showed too much last year to be on the waiver wire for long. He's got excellent speed and receiving ability for a big back. Even if he has to wait until his four game suspension is over, Williams will get signed somewhere - assuming that he has shown that he will keep himself in shape.

IND - WR T.Y. Hilton bothered by sore hamstring

    Source: NFL.com - Marc Sessler

Indianapolis Colts WR T.Y. Hilton (hamstring) continues to be bothered by a sore hamstring, which he suffered in the preseason opener against the Buffalo Bills, according to head coach Chuck Pagano.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll want to see this clear up by next week to dismiss it, but even if Hilton can't play next week, his third round ADP is a discount from the WR1 he has been with Andrew Luck over the last two years of his career.

    Tuesday Update

BUF - RB Mike Gillislee favored for No. 2 back Source: The Buffalo News - Vic Carucci

Buffalo Bills RB Mike Gillislee (concussion) is 'probably the No. 2 back right now', according to head coach Rex Ryan. Gillislee is still in the concussion protocol, however.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

So many different opinions here. We've been high on rookie Jonathan Williams but we don't make this call. Rex Ryan said he thinks Gillislee is "probably" the #2 guy. Some beat writers think Reggie Bush is the favorite. Don't discount the concussion protocol for Gillislee though. Bottom line is things seem pretty unsettled for the #2 RB and we'll continue to watch this one closely for you.

WAS - RB Matt Jones out for preseason

Source: The Washington Post - Mike Jones

Washington Redskins RB Matt Jones (shoulder) will sit the rest of the preseason because of a sprained shoulder, according to head coach Jay Gruden. RBs Keith Marshall and Rob Kelley will both get first-team looks in place of Jones.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones may be able to return for the regular-season opener, but shoulder injuries are tough for RBs to overcome. The second-year pro has fantasy potential based on volume alone, but that's just as a low-end RB2 in PPR leagues.

CAR - WR Devin Funchess pushing WR Kelvin Benjamin

    Source: Panthers.com - Max Henson

Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess has really impressed wide receivers coach Ricky Proehl this offseason. Proehl said Funchess is playing at a level that is forcing WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) to keep up and get better. 'To be honest with you, where Devin is right now and where Kelvin needs to get to, I think Devin is pushing Kelvin,' Proehl said. 'He's realizing, 'I've got to get back, I've got to push, because [Funchess] is pretty dang good.' Proehl did admit that Benjamin is still fully recovering from his torn anterior cruciate ligament, however.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Benjamin's current ADP (WR21) is a little high for our taste. However, we love scooping up Funchess at his current ADP (WR49). The second-year pro has a similar game to Benjamin, and they may put up numbers that are similar in 2016. Keep an eye as Funchess and Benjamin continue to battle for targets.

DAL - RB Ezekiel Elliott may play Thursday

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott (hamstring) participated in practice Monday, Aug. 22, and appears to be on track to play in the preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks Thursday, Aug. 25.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
If the rookie does play, he may not play that much. The talent is there, and behind this Cowboys offensive line Elliott could lead the league in rushing as a rookie. We're excited about his prospects and right now he's being taken as a first-round pick in most every draft.

NFL - RB Karlos Williams not claimed

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Free-agent RB Karlos Williams (Bills) was not claimed off waivers and is now an unrestricted free agent, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Williams has what doctors call a bit of a weight problem. At this time, he needs to drop about 20 pounds to show that he's serious about playing football. Oh yeah -- he's also suspended the first month of the season. RB-needy teams should be interested in Williams, so long as he doesn't go 'fat guy in a little coat' during a workout.

SF - QB Colin Kaepernick back at practice

    Source: CSNBayArea.com - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (arm) participated in a full warmup practice Monday, Aug. 22. It was his first such participation since Aug. 10.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team has been watching Kaepernick throw on an incredibly limited basis while he's been out. It's the recovery process that needs work for Kaepernick. He'll be able to throw, but his soreness over the next few days will determine whether or not he can continue throwing. Blaine Gabbert is the clear-cut starter while Kaepernick is banged up.

DEN - QB Trevor Siemian to start again

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Denver Broncos QB Trevor Siemian will start Saturday, Aug. 27, against the Los Angeles Rams.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Siemian got the start in the second preseason game against the 49ers, but he was not impressive. He threw an interception that was returned for a TD and banged up his shoulder trying to make a tackle on that play. Even with a sore shoulder and a pick-six to his resume, Kubiak wants to see more of him with the starters. This is bad news for Mark Sanchez, and the veteran may fall to third-string on the depth chart behind rookie first-round pick Paxton Lynch.

BAL - WR Breshad Perriman activated

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens WR Breshad Perriman (knee) was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list Monday, Aug. 22.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Perriman missed all of his rookie season last year, and he suffered a partially-torn ACL back in June and has not been able to participate in training camp because of it. He's not yet cleared to fully participate in practice, and it seems like Perriman is no lock to contribute early in the season. We hope he gets healthy and we can see him flash towards the midway point of the year.

CLE - WR Josh Gordon runs with starters

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon (quadriceps) is running with the first-team offense in practice Monday, Aug. 22.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team is planning on Gordon playing in their preseason game on Friday, so it makes sense he's working with the first-team offense. He'll miss the first four games of the season due to a suspension, but Gordon is a clear starter when he returns in Week 5. Fantasy owners could get him at a value as a WR3 with WR1 upside.

SF - TE Vance McDonald emerging as weapon

    Source: NFL.com - Chris Wesseling

San Francisco 49ers TE Vance McDonald has caught five passes for 92 yards from QB Blaine Gabbert through two preseason games.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
An important note for fantasy owners looking to wait on TE. The Chip Kelly offense regularly features the TE as the first read after the belly option with the RB. A QB like Blaine Gabbert should use McDonald early and often as a security blanket when looking to move the chains through the air. Catching 75 passes and finishing as a top-10 fantasy TE is not out of the question for McDonald.

CHI - WR Kevin White impressing WR Alshon Jeffery

    Source: ChicagoBears.com - Larry Mayer

Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery said WR Kevin White is making strides and making plays. 'He missed the whole year last year, so this year he's progressing right where we need him to be,' Jeffery said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

White has been impressing beat writers in attendance for training camp, and apparently his teammates like what they see too. The second-year pro is an intriguing prospect to watch -- especially since we didn't get to see him as a rookie due to injury. He's not a refined route-runner, but White has the speed to take the top off the defense. We consider White to be a high-upside WR4 for your fantasy team. His current ADP is WR39 (8.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

TB - TE Cameron Brate drops a couple

    Source: PewterReport.com - Eric Horchy

Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE Cameron Brate dropped a pass that led to an interception and dropped another pass that would have been a touchdown against the Jacksonville Jaguars Saturday, Aug. 20.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This could be part of the reason that Austin Seferian-Jenkins is back on the first team - splitting snaps with Brate. If this trend continues, Seferian-Jenkins could be starting by Week 1.

CLE - WR Terrelle Pryor no fluke

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns WR Terrelle Pryor will continue to make big plays and score touchdowns during the regular season, in the opinion of beat writer Mary Kay Cabot, who noted Pryor beat Pro Bowl CB Desmond Trufant for a 50-yard against the Atlanta Falcons in the preseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Pryor continues to rise up the charts during camp. It's looking like he deserves a late pick in drafts as the big play threat in the Browns offense while Josh Gordon is suspended. He has been the recipient of two excellent deep balls from Robert Griffin III in the preseason in very limited action.

NE - WR Danny Amendola moving well

    Source: ESPNBoston.com - Mike Reiss

New England Patriots WR Danny Amendola (ankle, knee) appears to be moving well despite remaining on the Physically Unable to Perform list. He did warm up with teammates in practice Monday, Aug. 22, but he was not in full pads.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A good sign for Amendola. They will continue to ease him back into action. The Patriots passing game can be quite fantasy relevant, but with so many weapons around QB Tom Brady we just don't see a lot of points in the future for Amendola.

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler
Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger said he plans to play in the preseason game against the New Orleans Saints Friday, Aug. 26.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's the dress rehearsal for the regular season! Roethlisberger should fill the air with footballs in 2016, and we love him as a QB1 you can get later in your draft.

CAR - Two rookie CBs may start for Carolina

    Source: ESPN.com - David Newton

Carolina Panthers CBs Daryl Worley and James Bradberry appear to be on track to start in Week 1. CB Bene Benwikere likely will be the nickel back if he does not start.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

They have a great front seven, but these rookie corners are a concern. If they're exposed, fantasy owners will want to get opposing WRs in the lineup.

GB - No brace for WR Jordy Nelson

    Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky

Green Bay Packers WR Jordy Nelson (knee) was not wearing a brace on his surgically repaired knee during practice Monday, Aug. 22.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're not sure how much Nelson will play in the preseason, but we're not counting on him to play a lot of snaps -- if any. However, things appear to be on track for Week 1. This gives us a lot of confidence in Nelson, QB Aaron Rodgers and the rest of the Packers passing game.

TEN - WR Kendall Wright unlikely to play

Source: The Tennessean - Jim Wyatt

Tennessee Titans WR Kendall Wright (hamstring) is doubtful to play in Week 3 of the preseason, according to head coach Mike Mularkey.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen (back) returned to practice Monday, Aug. 22. The extent of Olsen's participation was not disclosed.

SF - RB Shaun Draughn is the backup

Source: KNBR 680 - Kate Scott

San Francisco 49ers RB Shaun Draughn is the No. 2 running back, according to head coach Chip Kelly. RBs DuJuan Harris and Mike Davis are competing for the No. 3 position.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Draughn was injured (ribs) during the joint practices with the Broncos last week and missed the team's second preseason game. He'll be the backup to Carlos Hyde, but Draughn may see a large enough role as a receiver to warrant taking him as a last-round flier in deeper PPR leagues.

IND - QB Andrew Luck throwing underneath more
    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Wells

Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck is throwing more underneath passes to get the ball out quicker and allow his receivers to use their speed after the catch. 'They've worked really hard on that clock in (Luck's) head,' coach Chuck Pagano said. 'You can sit and wait and wait and wait and hold that thing too long. I think our guys up front, that starting unit and the couple guys that came in did a really nice job of giving him some time. He is not turning down a profit so if things aren't there down the field, then go ahead and hit your check-down. We've got some guys that can make some plays if we can get them the ball in space.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Colts want to keep Luck healthy all season as he's the key to their Super Bowl window. Having him get rid of the ball makes a ton of sense for many reasons. He'll get out of the way of the pass rush by utilizing quick/short passes. The Colts also have a trio of fine WRs who can all use their assets to make plays after the catch. We're not expecting a lot from their rushing attack, so using as much of Luck and those WRs makes the most sense.

NYJ - NYJ may keep four QBs on roster

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

The New York Jets are leaning toward keeping four quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, with QBs Ryan Fitzpatrick, Bryce Petty, Geno Smith and Christian Hackenberg making the cut.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fitzpatrick is the starter for now, but his future with the team after this season is not a given. Who knows what the future holds for Smith, but he's likely in his final season with the Jets. Petty is a work-in-progress as a pro passer -- and that's putting in nicely. Hackenberg was added to be the future starter, but it's been some time since he's looked consistently good on the football field. Good luck Jets fans, it will be interesting to see how this develops.

WAS - WR Josh Doctson not a lock to be ready

Source: The Washington Post - Mike Jones

Washington Redskins WR Josh Doctson (Achilles') could open the season on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list, which would cost him at least the first six games.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Achilles' injuries aren't something to take lightly. Washington should be as cautious as possible when bringing the rookie back from this injury. Doctson is a smooth route-runner who was used to being the centerpiece of the passing game at TCU. In the future, Doctson could be a reliable starter for Washington. For now, Jamison Crowder has the no.3 role all to himself.

Houston Texans WR Braxton Miller has been the starting slot receiver in the first two preseason games, and offensive coordinator Bob Godsey said he has been impressed with Miller's commitment to developing relationships with his quarterbacks and coaches.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Miller has only been playing WR for a year, and he's got incredible upside if he continues to develop. A converted QB, Miller has incredible athleticism and can easily make defenders miss in the open field. He's a strong runner who plays with intensity and physicality as a receiver. The Texans passing game is all about WR DeAndre Hopkins, but we could see Miller contributing as a rookie. Consider him a WR7 in deep leagues.

    Wednesday Update

DAL - RB Ezekiel Elliott will play Source: Fort Worth Star-Telegram - Clarence E. Hill Jr.

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott (hamstring) will play in the preseason game Thursday, Aug. 25, and the plan is for him to see eight to 12 plays. The team hopes to give him looks as a runner and receiver.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's enough to see the rookie for just a little bit, and it's a taste of what is to come in Dallas. Elliott should be the centerpiece of the Cowboys offense, and there's a chance he could lead the league in rushing as a rookie. He's immensely talented as a runner, and behind that mammoth offensive line Elliott could have great success in 2016. We're excited to see him in the preseason, even if it's only for a small handful of plays.

BUF - WR Sammy Watkins will play Friday

    Source: BuffaloBills.com - Chris Brown

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (foot) is good to go against the Washington Redskins Friday, Aug. 26. He won't play much, but head coach Rex Ryan believes he's ready.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We don't need to see much of Watkins on Friday. The Bills should limit his reps in this game with an eye on having him near full strength for the start of the regular season.

DAL - WR Dez Bryant out with concussion

Source: Fort Worth Star-Telegram - Drew Davison

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant (concussion) suffered a concussion in practice Monday, Aug. 22, and he has been ruled out for the third preseason game Thursday, Aug. 25.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We'll all monitor Bryant closely as he goes through the concussion protocol. The team is going to run as much as possible, but when they go through the air it will be a ton of Bryant. He's a low-end WR1 for fantasy owners in 2016.

CHI - RB Jeremy Langford still absent

    Source: ESPNChicago.com - Jeff Dickerson

Chicago Bears RB Jeremy Langford (foot) did not practice Tuesday, Aug. 23, as he continues to recover from a foot injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Langford may not be able to play in the team's third preseason game. Set to be the lead back, Langford had a good preseason game against the Patriots with 55 yards and a touchdown on eight carries. We like him as a low-end RB2 for fantasy owners. His current ADP is RB19 (5.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

DET - TE Eric Ebron on track for opener

    Source: ESPN - Adam Caplan

Detroit Lions TE Eric Ebron (ankle) is expected to play in Week 1, barring a setback, according to a source. Ebron has an outside chance at playing in the final preseason game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're a bit worried about Ebron this year. Not only is he banged up too often to trust, but WR Anquan Boldin could take away some of the routes that Ebron could get targeted on.

CLE - Teams calling about WR Josh Gordon

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon has had multiple teams call the Browns inquiring about his availability, according to sources. A team source said the Browns aren't looking to trade Gordon, and many around the league believe head coach Hue Jackson is the right coach for Gordon to thrive with.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Browns know that Gordon is the best receiver on the roster, and there's little chance they trade him away unless they get an offer they can't refuse. Jackson is giving everyone a second chance on the roster, and Gordon has the talent to be one of the best WRs in the league. There's no reason to trade him away, and we don't imagine any team paying a hefty price for the oft-suspended WR.

NYJ - New York hosts RB Karlos Williams

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

Free-agent RB Karlos Williams (Bills) visited the New York Jets Tuesday, Aug. 23. A deal is not imminent, however.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Jets will take a look at any player from the AFC East. Williams needs to lose weight and prove that he wants to take football seriously before a team takes a chance on him. He's also got to serve a four-game suspension before getting back onto the field in the regular season.

WAS - WR Josh Doctson could be ready soon

    Source: Redskins.com - Stephen Czarda

Washington Redskins WR Josh Doctson (Achilles') could take the field as early as the Redskins' final preseason game. Head coach Jay Gruden said the 'total expectation' is for Doctson to be good to go by Week 1, although he is not at 100% health yet. Gruden does believe that Doctson is in a good place from a mental standpoint.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Achilles' injuries are nothing to mess around with. Doctson is a savvy route-runner who could compete for the team's no.3 WR spot with Jamison Crowder. Look for Washington to ease him in the lineup.

MIN - QB Teddy Bridgewater resumes throwing

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Josh Alper

Minnesota Vikings QB Teddy Bridgewater (shoulder) threw during team drills Tuesday, Aug. 23, although he was apparently throwing shorter passes for the most part. Head coach Mike Zimmer said he didn't want to play Bridgewater last week for risk of Bridgewater getting hurt, adding that he would use caution if Bridgewater did have a shoulder issue.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Vikings will take it easy on their young franchise QB here. It's unclear if Bridgewater will play in Week 3 of the preseason.

DET - WR Golden Tate back at practice

    Source: DetroitLions.com - Tim Twentyman

Detroit Lions WR Golden Tate (undisclosed) returned to practice Tuesday, Aug. 23. The extent of his participation was not disclosed, however.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Tate should catch a lot of passes for the Lions this year as a featured WR. We see him as a low-end WR2 for fantasy owners in standard-scoring leagues. Don't forget about Marvin Jones though who see being right up there with Tate.

SEA - RB C.J. Prosise should play Thursday

Source: 710 ESPN Seattle - Liz Mathews
Seattle Seahawks RB C.J. Prosise (hamstring) is expected to see some playing time Thursday, Aug. 25, against the Dallas Cowboys if he continues to progress, according to offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
He wasn't around for the first two games and his injury caused him to drop down the depth chart behind at least Christine Micheal. Right now it appears that, even healthy, he won't be an option in redraft, but given the uncertainty in front of him, Prosise is worth keeping an eye on.

DEN - QB Trevor Siemian doesn't practice

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

Denver Broncons QB Trevor Siemian (shoulder) did not practice Tuesday, Aug. 23, as he is nursing a sore shoulder. Siemian did, however, lead the Broncos in first-team running drills. The second-year quarterback is still expected to start Saturday, Aug. 27, against the Los Angeles Rams.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He's supposed to start, but we imagine he has to practice before then. So far the quarterback battle between Siemian and Mark Sanchez has been depressing to watch but it appears as if not only has Sanchez lost the starting gig, but perhaps dropped behind Paxton Lynch on the depth chart. This should all be resolved after the game, and no matter the result, the reality is that none of them should be on your roster as more than a QB3 or worse.

GB - QB Aaron Rodgers may play

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Tom Silverstein

Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers could play in the third preseason game, according to head coach Mike McCarthy.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We don't need to see Rodgers play. It would be nice as the third week of the preseason is the dress rehearsal for the regular season, but it's not necessary because Rodgers has a ton of experience.

BAL - WR Breshad Perriman does solo work

    Source: WNST

Baltimore Ravens WR Breshad Perriman (knee) participated in individual drills Tuesday, Aug. 23, which was expected.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Perriman missed all of last year due to a knee injury and is basically a rookie again this year. He's missed all of training camp so far with a partially-torn ACL he suffered in June. We're not expecting much from him early in the season, but if he's healthy then perhaps he could make some plays later in the year.

MIA - QB Ryan Tannehill making progress

    Source: MiamiDolphins.com

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill said Monday, Aug. 22, that he is feeling more comfortable every day in the new offense, and he expects the offense will play a lot more fast as the regular season gets closer.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Tannehill should be able to thrive in the Adam Gase offense. We like adding him as a QB2 in your fantasy leagues. This might be the year that Tannehill finally starts playing up to his potential.

MIA - RB Jay Ajayi excited about more time

    Source:

Miami Dolphins RB Jay Ajayi said Monday, Aug. 22, he and his teammates are preparing for the preseason game Thursday, Aug. 25, like it is a regular season game and he is looking forward to the extra time on the field.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team added veteran Arian Foster in free agency, and he looks like he could be the lead back this season. However, the Dolphins have tossed around the idea of using the dreaded 'hot hand' approach at RB. That makes Ajayi a risky RB4 for most fantasy owners. Plus there's the injury worry with Foster.

DEN - QB Paxton Lynch hasn't eluded pressure

    Source: 9News.com - Mike Klis

Denver Broncos QB Paxton Lynch has done some good things in training camp and the preseason, throwing for 187 yards with two touchdowns while completing 21 of his 33 throws. However, he has also taken six sacks in his limited preseason game action.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
He can elude pressure, as he's one of the most athletic young passers in the league today. However, Lynch has held onto the ball too long when going through his progressions. He needs to speed up his processor and get rid of the ball quickly on simple reads. When the play breaks down, Lynch does a good job of thinking 'pass' while running to keep the play alive.

    Thursday Update

NE - TE Rob Gronkowski back at practice Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (undisclosed) is participating in practice Wednesday, Aug. 24.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners can breathe a sigh of relief here. Gronkowski's injury -- whatever it was -- was minor and he should be good to go for the start of the regular season.

NO - RB Mark Ingram will be the bellcow

Source: The New Orleans Times-Picayune - Larry Holder

New Orleans Saints RB Mark Ingram is expected to shoulder most of the load in the backfield with all of his underlings struggling in one facet of the game or another. He is capable of playing three downs, is capable of doing big things catching the ball out of the backfield and he is the best of the group in pass protection, too.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Was this ever in question? Ingram is the bellcow, and he's been working on his receiving skills this offseason as he never wants to come off the field. He had a career-high 50 catches last year and could do even more as a receiver this year. Ingram has finished each of the last two seasons as the no.15 fantasy RB (standard scoring leagues), and this could be the year that he ranks closer to the top 10.

KC - RB Charcandrick West works in practice

Source: The Kansas City Star - Terez A. Paylor

Kansas City Chiefs RB Charcandrick West (elbow) was back at practice Wednesday, Aug. 24. He has been dealing with an elbow injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

West could get on the field as a change-of-pace back this year. The Chiefs have a trio of fine RBs with starter Jamaal Charles and backups Spencer Ware and West. Stash West if you've got enough room on your bench.

DEN - QB Trevor Siemian returns to practice

    Source: NFL.com

Denver Broncos QB Trevor Siemian (shoulder) returned to practice Wednesday, August 24, and took about 80% of his typical workload. He's expected to start his second straight preseason game Saturday, August 27.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Siemian missed Tuesday's practice with a sore shoulder. He's back but he was still limited. The Broncos are expecting him to start against the Rams on Saturday night. If he doesn't throw another interception, then Siemian should have the inside track to be named the starting QB for the Broncos. However, expect rookie Paxton Lynch to start within the first month of the season if (when?) Siemian struggles.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Talent has never been a question with Green-Beckham. If properly used and motivated, Green-Beckham could develop into one of the best WRs in the game. We're not counting on that, but we will be watching to see how he transitions with his new team.

SEA - Coach says RB Thomas Rawls will play Week 1

    Source: ESPN.com - Sheil Kapadia

Seattle Seahawks RB Thomas Rawls (ankle) will be ready to play in Week 1, according to head coach Pete Carroll. Rawls will not play in the preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys Thursday, Aug. 25, but has looked good during training camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rawls is out this week, and there's no need to play him in the fourth preseason game. He's likely to share time and touches with Christine Michael this year. The percentage of the split will determine whether or not Rawls is worth his current ADP of RB15 (4.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll be likely to see Bridgewater limited by this shoulder injury -- no matter how minor. The team wants him to be near full strength for the start of the regular season.

New York Jets QB Geno Smith will be the No. 2 quarterback in the preseason game against the New York Giants Saturday, Aug 27, according to head coach Todd Bowles. Bowles said he will try to get QB Bryce Petty some playing time as the third quarterback during the game.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll see if Smith can do anything with his opportunity. In the last preseason game, Smith went 6-of-13 for 47 yards with no touchdowns and one interception.

NYJ - RB Matt Forte may play Saturday

Source: The Associated Press - Dennis Waszak Jr.

New York Jets RB Matt Forte (hamstring) hopefully will be able to play in the preseason game against the New York Giants Saturday, Aug. 27, as long as he does not suffer any setbacks, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Due to this hamstring injury, we may see Forte in a limited role. When Week 1 rolls around, we'll be watching to see how the rotation goes between Forte and Bilal Powell. The Jets offense has the makings of a bit of a RBBC, but the exact split is not yet known.

SF - QB Colin Kaepernick set to debut Friday

    Source: CSNBayArea.com - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (arm) is 'on track' to play against the Green Bay Packers Friday, Aug. 26, according to head coach Chip Kelly.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Well alright, it's time to see if Kaepernick can put himself back in the QB competition with Blaine Gabbert. If healthy, it seems like Kaepernick would be a good fit for the 49ers offense under Kelly. However, three offseason surgeries have held him back to this point. We'll see what Kaepernick can do in his 2016 preseason debut.

CLE - WR Corey Coleman past hamstring injury

    Source: ESPNCleveland.com - Tony Grossi

Cleveland Browns WR Corey Coleman (hamstring) said he is over his hamstring injury and will be ready to play against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Friday, Aug. 26.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good news for the rookie here. Coleman's game is built on speed, speed and more speed. The hamstring injury has slowed him down, but it sounds like he's on track for this game and Week 1 of the regular season. Coleman should be the lead WR for the Browns while Josh Gordon is suspended the first four games of the year.

CLE - WR Josh Gordon set to play Friday Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon (quadriceps) will play against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Friday, Aug. 26, according to head coach Hue Jackson.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're excited to see Gordon on the football field this week. He's suspended the first four games of the year, but when he returns Gordon could put up WR1 numbers. He's currently WR31 (6.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

PHI - RB Wendell Smallwood to be busy

Source: Delaware News Journal - Martin Frank
Philadelphia Eagles RB Wendell Smallwood is expected to see a lot of action in the third preseason game to make up for the time he missed with a quadriceps injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
In college at West Virginia, Smallwood was quite productive on the ground. In fact, last year he was the Big 12's leading rusher with over 1,500 yards. He's a rhythm runner who lacks elite speed or burst. Smallwood does have good vision, but he's not particularly creative or elusive in the open field. A sleeper name in some circles, the rookie is worth monitoring behind the oft-injured Eagles starter Ryan Mathews.

    KC - S Eric Berry's return imminent?

    Source: ESPN.com - Adam Teicher

Kansas City Chiefs SS Eric Berry still has not signed his franchise tender, but the team believes he could return soon and remain hopeful he'll be in uniform for Week 1. Head coach Andy Reid wants to get Berry in soon to see 'what kind of shape' the veteran is in.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

What in the world were the Chiefs thinking? They should have signed Berry to a new long-term deal before the July 15th deadline for franchise-tagged players. Instead, they're left with this mess. When he returns, Berry will be on a one-year $10.8 million contract.

CHI - TE Zach Miller nearing return

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeff Dickerson

Chicago Bears TE Zach Miller (concussion) was once again in a red jersey, which signifies no contact, during practice on Tuesday, Aug. 23, but is thought to be close to returning from the NFL's concussion protocol.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If healthy -- something that has been a problem for Miller during his pro career -- we think he could catch 50 passes this year for the Bears. That makes him a TE2 with some upside. Keep an eye on his return before you draft him late.

NO - TE Coby Fleener still work in progress

Source: The New Orleans Times-Picayune - Josh Katzenstein

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener is still getting situation in his team's offense, and he continues to make adjustments. 'I'd say it's an ongoing progression,' head coach Sean Payton said Monday, Aug. 22. 'I think, man, there's some plays that are real good, and then there's some plays where we've got to be a little bit more detailed and that's something that I know he's got to work on.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's not what you want to hear about a player going off in the top 5 of his position. Right now, Fleener is getting drafted at TE5 (6.05) in 12-team PPR leagues. We'll see how he does this week in the dress rehearsal for the regular season. On paper, Fleener could be quite the valuable fantasy asset with the Saints.

NO - RB Tim Hightower hones in on No. 2 job

Source: The New Orleans Times-Picayune - Larry Holder

New Orleans Saints RB Tim Hightower is expected to serve as the team's primary backup to RB Mark Ingram, as none of the other reserve tailbacks have flashed or helped themselves in training camp and the preseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Keep this in mind if you play in deeper leagues and want to handcuff a player to Ingram. After Ingram was hurt last year, Hightower stepped in and did well. He played adequately over the final four games, with 84 carries for 327 yards (3.9 ypc) and 4 touchdowns. He also had 12 receptions for 129 yards.

    Friday Update

DAL - QB Tony Romo tweaks back Source: NFL.com - Ian Rapoport

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (back) exited against the Seattle Seahawks Thursday, Aug. 25, and was holding his back. He tried to return to the field, but he was called back by coaches.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

    NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported coach Jason Garrett said on their broadcast at halftime, regarding Tony Romo's back: "We don't think it's a serious thing." [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners need to keep this in mind when Green's child is born. He may not miss any time, but who knows when the stork is going to deliver that new bundle of joy.

TEN - HC vows to get RB Derrick Henry on field

    Source: TitansInsider.com - Terry McCormick

Tennessee Titans RB Derrick Henry will get onto the field, as head coach Mike Mularkey said Wednesday, Aug. 24, that he will find ways to use Henry even though RB DeMarco Murray is the starter.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That could be tough if Demarco Murray plays as well as it sounds like he will. That said, reports indicate that Murray has been a solid mentor to Henry. Murray remains the workhorse here, though, and is a solid RB2 while Henry is relegated to an RB4 status barring injury.

DET - TE Eric Ebron not on the field

    Source: ESPN.com - Michael Rothstein

Detroit Lions TE Eric Ebron (ankle) is not participating in practice Thursday, Aug. 25.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That high ankle sprain is a concern. Given that the offensive temp is supposed to be faster than a speeding bullet, that's going to hurt Ebron and it will be much tougher to just play through. We'll keep watching this for the Week 1 impact. Ebron has been tracking with an ADP of TE18, 149th pick overall in drafts.

PIT - Le'Veon Bell will play Friday

Source: Pittsburgh Tribune-Review - Chris Adamski

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (knee) will play in the preseason game against the New Orleans Saints Friday, Aug. 26, according to head coach Mike Tomlin.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bell saw his suspension cut down to three games, but that's still three you have to get past without him. We think DeAngelo Williams will be a fine replacement and he should put up RB1 numbers while Bell is out. Even with the suspension, Bell's ADP is still RB6 and No. 13 off the board overall.

NFL - Five interested in RB Karlos Williams

Source: WGR Sports Radio 550 - Sal Capaccio

Free-agent RB Karlos Williams (Bills) is receiving interest from five teams, according to sources. Williams has already met with the New York Jets.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Teams (and Fantasy GMs) have to keep in mind that he is suspended for the first portion of the season. He'll miss four games to start the year, and that suspension will certainly cool the market for his services. Williams has the talent to be a good starter, but it appears he lacks self control. If Williams can change that, he could be an effective back in the NFL.

Source: Detroit Free Press - Dave Birkett

Detroit Lions RB Stevan Ridley was released Thursday, Aug. 25.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Zach Zenner's ascendancy got Ridley cut. He never has really recovered from his last injury but should find a home somewhere as a depth back as the season comes closer.

DEN - QB Trevor Siemian expected to start?

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeff Legwold

Denver Broncos QB Trevor Siemian has already locked up the starting quarterback job, in the opinion of beat writer Jeff Legwold.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll see but it did indeed seem like Mark Sanchez fumbled away his chance at a starting job. At the end of the day the Broncos mostly need someone to run the offense without turning the ball over. Siemian seems to be that guy right now. Don't be surprised if rookie first-round pick Paxton Lynch takes over at some point this season.

IND - RB Robert Turbin to spell RB Frank Gore?

Indianapolis Colts RB Robert Turbin will likely serve as the backup to RB Frank Gore, according to beat writer Stephen Holder.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The only value Turbin has is to Frank Gore owners worried the ageless wonder will suddenly have the wheels come off. Gore is a nice RB3 play most weeks and we don't trust that Turbin can even hit that mark if Gore goes down.

PIT - Slow rehab for TE Ladarius Green
    Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Ladarius Green (ankle) still hopes to be ready for Week 1, but acknowledged that the rehabilitation process is 'very slow.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Green has to be labeled as an injury prone player. He's always been banged up...or at least it seems like it. Fantasy owners who considered him a sleeper after he signed with the Steelers earlier this year are now looking for 'lottery ticket' TEs elsewhere.

MIN - RB Adrian Peterson to sit rest of preseason

Source: St. Paul Pioneer Press - Chris Tomasson

Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson will not play in the final two preseason games. Peterson made the decision himself and said it's in his best interest to rest until Week 1 of the regular season against the Tennessee Titans.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Peterson usually doesn't play in the preseason, so it's no big deal. Expect him to get around 300 carries this year as the centerpiece of the Vikings offense.

CHI - RB Jeremy Langford wants to be featured

    Source: ESPNChicago.com - Jeff Dickerson

Chicago Bears RB Jeremy Langford (foot) believes he's improving at being a complete running back and would like to be a three-down back for the Bears this season. Langford cited improvements in playing through contact, catching the football and his pass-blocking ability as factors in him becoming a better player. Additionally, Langford said his recent foot injury feels good and is getting better.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're still hoping this ends up as exactly what we suspect it is—Langford taking over the full-time gig. Along with the 537 yards and six touchdowns on 148 carries his rookie season, Langford also caught 22 of 42 targets for another 279 yards and a touchdown. He has the potential to put up some nice numbers. The biggest worry might be the offense, which could slide backwards without Adam Gase. That's why we have Langford as a borderline RB2/RB3 instead of a solid RB2.

ARI - WR Larry Fitzgerald's status uncertain

    Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald (knee) is not participating in practice Thursday, Aug. 25, and head coach Bruce Arians said he is not sure if Fitzgerald will be able to play in the preseason game against the Houston Texans Sunday, Aug. 28.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

They might as well rest him. It's not like they don't know what he can do. We know it too, and see him as a solid WR3 this season, right where his current ADP is as WR26, No. 56 player overall.

ARI - WR John Brown practicing

Arizona Cardinals WR John Brown (concussion) is participating in practice Thursday, Aug. 25.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're not sold we'll see him against the Houston Texans on Sunday but he should be OK for Week 1. We see Brown as a WR4 behind Michael Floyd and Larry Fitzgerald, with occasional production but not enough consistency if everyone else is healthy.

    20. NYG - WR Victor Cruz has good chance to play

    Source: Newsday - Bob Glauber

New York Giants head coach Ben McAdoo said he is very optimistic about WR Victor Cruz's (groin) availability for the preseason game against the New York Jets Saturday, Aug. 27.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We aren't optimistic about Cruz's fantasy impact though. His ADP is brutal, as he stands as WR68 and we can't blame early drafters for avoiding him. You should take your cue from them.

DET - RB Zach Zenner in a good spot

Source: Detroit Free Press - Dave Birkett

Detroit Lions RB Zach Zenner has consistently played behind RB Theo Riddick in the rotation this preseason, and he's on solid ground to make the team.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Zenner is a second year player who will still mostly contribute on special teams barring several injuries. That said, he is a solid all-around player who can run the ball, catch it and pass block, so he's worth keeping an eye on behind Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick.

DET - Detroit going no-huddle often

    Source: MLive.com - Kyle Meinke

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford and the other Lions quarterbacks have run a no-huddle offense 62% of the time this preseason. The Lions ran a no-huddle offense just 7% of the time last season. According to ProFootballFocus, Stafford has completed all six of his passes for 108 yards when targeting WRs Golden Tate and Marvin Jones out of the no-huddle. He's 6-for-11 passing for 63 yards on the rest of his throws combined. Overall, Stafford has completed 70.6% of his passes this preseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We like the sound of this as it keeps Stafford moving and avoids letting him sit in the pocket too long while he waits for a downfield option to get open. Of course, you have to execute or your defense gets back on the field too quickly and can't rest. Stafford is a rock-solid QB2 but you can add in a dash of upside this year if the high-tempo offense works.

TEN - WR Kendall Wright remains sidelined

Tennessee Titans WR Kendall Wright (hamstring) continues to miss practice due to a hamstring injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wright's time with the team could be short. Free agent acquisition Rishard Matthews and rookie Tajae Sharpe are both playing well, and there is some veteran depth the team has brought in with Andre Johnson and Harry Douglas. Wright has to get healthy, and soon, or he will have no impact this season. As it is, we see him as no more than a WR6.

NYJ - QB Christian Hackenberg has flaws in mechanics

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets QB Christian Hackenberg needs to tinker with his throwing mechanics, according to the team. The club would not get into specifics, but people who have studied the rookie believe he tends to over stride, causing his passes to sail. Hackenberg is currently fourth on the four-man depth chart.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We have yet to see the rookie in the preseason, and last year's draft pick Bryce Petty hasn't been looking too bad as the third man with the Jets. Hackenberg was drafted to be the QB of the future (remember, the Jets passed on Paxton Lynch) but this is not a good way to start things off. We'll see if he can develop, but we've never had too much dynasty love for Hackenberg.

    Saturday Update

CIN - TE Tyler Eifert hopeful of Week 4 return Source: NFL.com - Ian Rapoport

Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Eifert (ankle) is targeting Weeks 4-6 for his return from ankle surgery. He is hopeful it will come in Week 4.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Eifert's price already included a discount for missed early games, but perhaps not to this extent. He still projects as a top 5 tight end upon his return, perhaps as high as #3 at a tight end position that lost Ladarius Green during the preseason. If your rosters are large enough to keep Eifert until October without losing waiver wire flexibility, he could be a wise pick in the 8th-9th round when combined with a later sleeper tight end to cover the first 4-6 games.

DET - WR Marvin Jones fitting in nicely

    Source: DetroitLions.com - Tim Twentyman

Detroit Lions WR Marvin Jones has had 'terrific chemistry' with QB Matthew Stafford. He's averaging 16.2 yards per catch in the preseason, which is the sixth-most among all receivers who have had at least five catches through the first two weeks.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones is set to benefit from an uptempo, pass-heavy offense in addition to his early riffing with Stafford. He's a value in the 7th/8th round and should start hot against a Colts secondary that is without Vontae Davis in Week 1.

CLE - WR Josh Gordon for a second rounder?

Source: NFL Network - Mike Garafalo

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon was part of trade discussions, and the package Cleveland sought was a second-round pick and more, according to sources. The team denied listening to offers.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

One factor here is how much they like Terrelle Pryor and Corey Coleman. Gordon's demonstrated talent and league-tilting scoring in 2013 still makes him worth a boom/bust pick once you have filled out your core 5-6 players, even though he's going to miss the first four games of the season.

NO - TE Coby Fleener not reliable enough

Source: The New Orleans Times-Picayune - Larry Holder

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener hasn't been reliable enough catching passes and isn't on the same page with QB Drew Brees on some routes, according to beat writer Larry Holder. TE Josh Hill has been more involved in the passing game in recent practices.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fleener has been the subject of many reports of up and down play like this one. He and Drew Brees are not clicking, and there are signs that he won't be as involved as his huge contract would suggest, at least at first. Fleener is being drafted near his ceiling as TE6 or TE7 off of the board, which appears to be too bold in light of these reports.

ATL - WR Julio Jones expected to be limited

    Source: NFL.com - Marc Sessler

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones (ankle) likely will be limited during practice Sunday, Aug. 28, after suffering an ankle injury in the third preseason game, according to head coach Dan Quinn.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There was no sign that the injury was serious and Jones was on the sideline for the rest of the game. The state of the Falcons offense is a bigger concern than Jones' minor nicks and bumps right now, but he's still a top three pick in PPR and maybe non-PPR.

ATL - RB Devonta Freeman struggles

    Source: ESPN.com - Vaughn McClure

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman rushed for eight yards on five carries in the preseason game against the Miami Dolphins Thursday, Aug. 25.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Dolphins are going to be one of the tougher run matchups in the NFL with their size upfront, but Freeman was bottled up very easily nonetheless. He only got one more snap than Tevin Coleman, although Freeman should dominate snaps when the Falcons fall behind, which might be common this year. He's a much better PPR running back, but in both formats, consider Freeman a low RB1.

MIA - RB Arian Foster could have most touches

Source: The Palm Beach Post - Joe Schad

Miami Dolphins RB Arian Foster 'may end up with more touches this season' than the starter, RB Jay Ajayi in the opinion of Dolphins writer Joe Schad.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Foster looked like the better receiving back by a large margin, which fits better with the strengths of this offseason. He could be a very strong weekly play in PPR leagues, at least as long as he stays healthy.

KC - S Eric Berry back next week

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Kansas City Chiefs SS Eric Berry is likely to return to the team next week.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Chiefs will already be without Justin Houston for an extended time, and they lost starting corner Sean Smith in free agency, so Berry getting back in the fold is very important.

SEA - RB Christine Michael runs well again

    Source: ESPN.com

Seattle Seahawks RB Christine Michael had seven carries for 58 yards against the Dallas Cowboys Thursday, Aug. 25, and he has 24 carries for 157 yards in the preseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Michael probably isn't going to displace Thomas Rawls as the starter, but he can take enough work to lower Rawls' weekly and season-long ceiling. Michael's ability has been on display now that his off-field issues have been resolved. Or will that flare back up again? If Rawls goes down, Michael could be a league winner. He should be on your late round running back priority list.

MIA - TE Jordan Cameron battling drops

    Source: ESPN.com - James Walker

Miami Dolphins TE Jordan Cameron has struggled with drops this preseason, and he dropped two passes in a 17-6 preseason win over the Atlanta Falcons Thursday, Aug. 25. At one point, QB Ryan Tannehill opted not to throw to an open Cameron.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cameron looked slack and ill-suited to catch balls in traffic in this one. He was once an elite fantasy tight end, but at this point Cameron doesn't look like he is even worth a roster spot in fantasy leagues, even though the Dolphins appear to going pass-heavy and uptempo this year under new head coach Adam Gase.

MIA - WR Kenny Stills playing well

    Source: ESPN.com

Miami Dolphins WR Kenny Stills caught four passes for a team-high 46 yards in a 17-6 preseason win over the Atlanta Falcons Thursday, Aug. 25.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Stills appears to be the #2 wide receiver in this offense, much to the chagrin of DeVante Parker backers. Stills showed good timing with Ryan Tannehill on third down and he definitely has the trust of the quarterback. He's worth a late round pick, and it's time to move Parker down even further on our boards.

WAS - WR DeSean Jackson looking sharp

Source: The Washington Post - Mike Jones

Washington Redskins WR DeSean Jackson has displayed a greater focus this offseason, according to wide receivers coach Ike Hilliard, and CB DeAngelo Hall said Jackson has never looked better.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Jackson is still the deep threat in a high volume passing game, and he can definitely be the kind of boom/bust WR3 that is an unfair advantage when he reels in a long score. He doesn't appear to be slowing down.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There are some who feel Romo could return after the team's Week 7 bye. We're not so sure that's the case. However, Romo doesn't need surgery to correct the problem and that should help his recovery. While he's out, rookie Dak Prescott will get to start for the Cowboys. He's a QB2 with upside because of his rushing ability and the rest of the offense around him in Dallas.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Good news for the Steelers here. The suspension has a silver lining, and that is the extra time Bell gets to recover. With a three-game suspension, don't be afraid to take Bell in the late first round of your fantasy draft. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Kaepernick didn't do himself any favors in the competition for starting QB. Blaine Gabbert is still entrenched as the early-season starter (in our opinion), and Kaepernick is still trying to get his game back on track.

Hyde is going to be in the concussion protocol until he's cleared by the team. Watch his ADP with drafts going on around the country. Right now, Hyde is still going off the board at RB16 (4.06) in 12-team PPR leagues. That may drop a bit depending on how long this concussion lingers.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gordon's size, speed and ability to adjust to the ball in flight made for big plays at the end of Robert Griffin III rainbows downfield. He's going in the 5th-7th round range, and Gordon has the demonstrated ability, offense, and quarterbacks to more than pay off at that price despite a four-game suspension to begin the season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Griffin made good things happen as a downfield passer, but he was also under fire in a way that made observers hold their breath on many plays. The aggressive nature of the Browns offense is good for Griffin's fantasy prospects, but let's keep Josh McCown on our waiver wire speed dial.

Evans showed off his speed and athleticism in a 6'5" package, converting two downfield passes into big gains. If the Bucs offense gets more aggressive with no huddle and vertical passing, Evans could pay off on his 2nd round ADP.

Winston was moving around well, buying time, and finding his talented wide receiver combination downfield. He has a very rough stretch of Arizona, Los Angeles, Carolina, and Denver weeks 2-5 followed by his bye, but after that, Winston should be good to go in fantasy leagues.
