NFL Player News - Week of 8/15/16

SEA - Two Seattle backs to split load? Source: The Seattle Times - Bob Condotta

Seattle Seahawks RB Christine Michael played well in the preseason opener Saturday, Aug. 13, against the Kansas City Chiefs, and head coach Pete Carroll had interesting comments after the game. "He's (Michael) an NFL football player," Carroll said, per ESPN.com. "He really has made it clear to us about the work; he's serious about the consistency. He's taken great pride in the way he's brought it to practice -- day in and day out all throughout the offseason and camp. He's an explosive, dynamic athlete, so we're just going to keep going with him. When Thomas [Rawls] gets back out there, those guys give you a one-two punch that we're excited about. We'll see when C.J. [Prosise] gets back [this week] we'll see where he fits in there. I thought Christine did really well. I liked what he did."
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Keep this in mind when considering either for your fantasy team. Rawls is RB13 (3.11) in 12-team PPR leagues, and Michael is a nice 'lottery ticket' pick near the end of your draft.

NYG - WR Sterling Shepard practicing Sunday

    Source: SNY - Ralph Vacchiano
New York Giants WR Sterling Shepard (groin) participated in individual drills during practice Sunday, Aug. 14.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We love Shepard's upside as a pro. The rookie is quick in and out of his breaks and he's dangerous with the ball in his hands. He should end up starting opposite superstar Odell Beckham Jr. Consider Shepard a WR4 or WR5 for your fantasy team this year.

NYG - WR Victor Cruz on the field

    Source: SNY - Ralph Vacchiano

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (groin) participated in individual drills during practice Sunday, Aug. 14.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We may only see Cruz for a little bit of the preseason...if he even plays at all. The team wants him ready for the start of the regular season. Cruz should be their no.3 WR behind Odell Beckham Jr. and rookie Sterling Shepard. For fantasy purposes, Cruz is merely a WR7 at this point in his career.

DEN - Denver uncertain who will start Saturday

Source: The Denver Post - Nicki Jhabvala

Denver Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak hasn't announced if QB Mark Sanchez or QB Trevor Siemian will start the club's second preseason game against the San Francisco Giants Saturday, Aug. 20. Each quarterback played a quarter during the preseason opener against the Chicago Bears Thursday, Aug. 11, and both players will continue to receive starter reps in practice on a daily basis for the foreseeable future.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's supposed to be an open competition in Denver, but Mark Sanchez was the starter for the first preseason game even though he's not been the best QB in practice. Siemian may get quite a few looks this week in practice as the Broncos are having joint sessions with the 49ers in Denver. No matter who wins the starting job, the Broncos are going to be one of the most run-heavy teams in the NFL. Any Broncos QB is only a QB3 for fantasy owners.

DAL - QB Dak Prescott makes most of chance

    Source: The Associated Press

Dallas Cowboys rookie QB Dak Prescott made the start in the preseason opener Saturday, Aug. 13, against the Los Angeles Rams with QB Tony Romo resting. Prescott sizzled, completing 10 of his 12 pass attempts for 139 yards and two touchdowns, including one to Dez Bryant. His two incompletions were dropped passes, too.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Prescott is an intriguing dynasty prospect, and he could be groomed as the QB of the future for the Cowboys. The rookie from Mississippi State reminds us of Donovan McNabb because of his arm strength and athleticism combination. We're interested in seeing his growth and development as a pro.

SF - QB Blaine Gabbert running away with QB job

    Source: ESPN - Adam Caplan

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert has been the 'landslide favorite for weeks' in his battle with QB Colin Kaepernick, according to ESPN's Adam Caplan.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sure, Gabbert may be 'running away' with the job but he's doing it against a still recovering Kaepernick. It's not a fair competition as Kaepernick is still recovering from three offseason surgeries. When Kaepernick gets healthy, we'll see if he can push Gabbert for the top spot.

GB - No timetable for WR Jeff Janis

    Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis (hand) does not have a timetable for his return, according to head coach Mike McCarthy.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We may not see Janis back for the rest of the preseason. Janis will not practice this week and will not play against the Oakland Raiders Thursday, Aug. 18.

DEN - RB Devontae Booker practices as No. 2

    Source: 9News.com - Mike Klis

Denver Broncos RB Devontae Booker practiced as the backup running back behind RB C.J. Anderson Saturday, Aug. 13. According to Mike Klis of 9news.com, the Bronco' plan may be for Anderson and Booker to be their top two running backs.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners have expected the talented rookie to be the no.2 back. Anderson is going to have a large workload, an improved offensive line and could be a RB1 for fantasy owners. He's never stayed healthy for a full 16-game season, and that's why Anderson's ADP is currently near the end of the third round. If you add Anderson at that point, it could provide quite the value. You need to also add Booker once you get past round ten. Think of it like old school Tecmo Bowl as "DEN RB" is likely to be quite fantasy relevant.

WAS - WR Josh Doctson not ready to return

    Source: ESPN.com - John Keim

Washington Redskins WR Josh Doctson (Achilles') will still be sidelined for another week or two with his Achilles' injury. There is a feeling that his left foot is getting better, though, and there is still optimism that he'll be ready for Week 1. General manager Scot McCloughan already said the injury is not a long-term issue.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This was not a severe injury, but the team needs to be careful as the rookie recovers. If healthy, Doctson is going to compete with Jamison Crowder for the no.3 WR spot behind DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon.

NYJ - RB Matt Forte taking part in drills

Source: The Associated Press - Dennis Waszak Jr.

New York Jets RB Matt Forte (hamstring) is participating in individual drills during practice Sunday, Aug. 14.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He'll get worked into team drills as he gets healthier. Forte is set to be the team's lead back this year, and he's a RB2 for fantasy owners.

GB - WR Ty Montgomery receives day off

    Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky

Green Bay Packers WR Ty Montgomery (ankle) is not participating in practice Sunday, Aug. 14, because he is receiving a day off after practicing last week.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With Jeff Janis out, Montgomery could get a leg up in the competition for the no.3 WR job behind Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb. At this time, it looks like Jared Abbrederis may be the leader for that spot.

GB - WR Randall Cobb on practice field

    Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky

Green Bay Packers WR Randall Cobb (calf) is participating in practice Sunday, Aug. 14, after missing the first preseason game Friday, Aug. 12.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll feel more confident about Cobb's fantasy prospects when more is revealed about fellow WR Jordy Nelson (knee). Last year, when Nelson was out the entire passing game struggled. If Nelson is not quite 100 percent, it could hold back guys like Cobb again. Right now, Cobb has a current ADP of WR19 (3.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

ARI - TE Jermaine Gresham should be fine

    Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban

Arizona Cardinals TE Jermaine Gresham (back) suffered a back injury during the first preseason game but should be fine moving forward, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gresham is a seasoned veteran, but we don't expect the Cardinals to use him enough this year to be fantasy relevant. Bruce Arians is one of our favorite coaches in the league--and the Cardinals are a high-powered offense--but the TE position just isn't used that much in this system.

CLE - Cleveland wants pick for QB Josh McCown

Source: Yahoo! Sports - Charles Robinson

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown is not expected to be traded unless the team receives at least a fourth-round draft choice in return. The Dallas Cowboys are not interested in offering more than a sixth-round pick for McCown.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McCown could be dealt before the start of the regular season, but it would be difficult to imagine any team willing to give up a fourth-round pick. Robert Griffin III struggled in the Browns first preseason game, so McCown may be more valuable to them as a quality backup in case Griffin's struggles continue.

NE - WR Malcolm Mitchell undergoes MRI exam

    Source: ESPN - Adam Caplan

Updating previous reports, an MRI exam taken on New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell's (elbow) dislocated left elbow came out clean, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

At this time, the rookie may only miss about a month due to this elbow injury. The fourth-round pick out of Georgia is a dynasty prospect we love to add in that format. He's savvy as a route-runner and does a good job of coming back to the ball. Mitchell can get by defenders and does a good job of tracking the ball over his shoulder.

TEN - RB Derrick Henry finds end zone in debut Source: The Associated Press

Tennessee Titans RB Derrick Henry ran 10 times for 74 yards with a touchdown in his preseason debut Saturday, Aug. 13, against the San Diego Chargers.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The rookie is a swift runner with build-up power when he gets up to speed. Henry is a RB4 for fantasy owners as he'll be working in a RBBC with starter DeMarco Murray.

LA - QB Jared Goff bangs up shoulder

    Source: ESPN

Los Angeles Rams QB Jared Goff (shoulder) played limited snaps in his preseason debut Saturday, Aug. 13, against the Dallas Cowboys as head coach Jeff Fisher said Goff banged up his shoulder. 'He took a hit early, his non-throwing shoulder was a little sore so I didn't want to mess with it at all,' Fisher said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Injuries are a concern for a QB like Goff. First, he's slightly built and needs to put on more muscle to take the NFL beating he's going to get. Next, Goff is a brave passer who will stand in the pocket and take a big hit to deliver a deep strike. We love his upside, but feel he may be a bit like Cowboys starter Tony Romo at his best.

LA - QB Case Keenum sharp in preseason opener

    Source: The Associated Press

Los Angeles Rams QB Case Keenum completed six of his seven pass attempts for 58 yards in the preseason opener Saturday, Aug. 13, against the Dallas Cowboys. He started over the No. 1 overall pick QB Jared Goff.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Keenum could begin the year as the Rams starter, but we all know that Goff is the future. Neither is a great fantasy option in 2016.

SEA - RB C.J. Prosise might practice soon

Source: The Seattle Times - Bob Condotta

Seattle Seahawks RB C.J. Prosise (hamstring) might return to the practice field next week, head coach Pete Carroll said Saturday, Aug. 13.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team likes Prosise, and the converted WR could be in the mix as a change-of-pace back behind starter Thomas Rawls.

    Tuesday Update

NE - TE Rob Gronkowski leaves practice Source: ESPNBoston.com - Mike Reiss

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (undisclosed) left practice early Monday, Aug. 15, after pulling up while trying to catch a pass in 7-on-7 drills.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The fantasy community can hold their breath until we hear more. The Patriots aren't exactly forthcoming with injury information, so we'll just have to stay patient and stay positive. Per ESPN's Mike Reiss, Gronkowski walked up the sidelines after taking himself out of a drill. He was then escorted off the field with trainers. It's not official from the team but Doug Moore who covers the Patriots wrote that it was a "lower-body" injury. Moore said he was told, it's "not serious" and that Gronkowsi was "dealing with cramping". It doesn't appear that the team ordered an MRI for Gronkowski so that's a positive. Stay tuned.

OAK - RB Latavius Murray may receive more work

Source: San Francisco Chronicle - Vic Tafur

Oakland Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio said he would like RB Latavius Murray to receive more carries than he did last season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Keep this in mind when considering Murray for your fantasy team. Murray had a career-high 266 carries in 2015, and he finished last season as the 10th-ranked RB in fantasy football (standard leagues). This year, Murray should get around 250 carries but perhaps he gets more. He's going off the board at RB15 (4.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

SEA - RB Thomas Rawls in team drills

    Source: ESPN.com - Sheil Kapadia

Seattle Seahawks RB Thomas Rawls (knee) participated in team drills Monday, Aug. 15, for the first time all offseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's a sign that Rawls is nearing full strength. Fantasy owners need to recognize that Rawls is the lead back but he could split touches with Christine Michael. Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll believes that duo could provide a nice '1-2 punch' for the team.

SEA - Bigger role for RB Christine Michael?

Source: The Seattle Times - Bob Condotta

Seattle Seahawks RB Christine Michael could be part of a '1-2 punch' with RB Thomas Rawls, according to head coach Pete Carroll, and Carroll praised Michael's consistency.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is not what Rawls drafters wanted to hear, but Michael is a new man according to most reports and the team, and we already know he has the talent to be a very good NFL running back. The Seahawks have gone with a true feature back under Carroll, but Rawls will likely be eased back in at the beginning of the season, giving Michael a chance to seize a role. Rawls is looking riskier in the fourth round, but his upside still merits a pick in the fifth.

DEN - DE Vance Walker has serious injury

    Source: 9News.com - Mike Klis

Updating a previous report, Denver Broncos DT Vance Walker (knee) suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament Monday, Aug. 15. He is out for the season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a blow to the Broncos defensive line. Walker was playing well in camp and the expected starter to replace Malik Jackson. Without Walker, the team will turn to veteran Jared Crick and rookie Adam Gotsis.

SF - QB Colin Kaepernick not at full strength

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (arm) is dealing with 'a dead arm,' according to sources. The 49ers hope he'll be back to full strength soon.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's not the term you want to hear if you're the 49ers. Kaepernick is recovering from three offseason surgeries and is not yet at full strength. It's looking more and more like Blaine Gabbert will begin the season as the starter.

CLE - WR Josh Gordon limited Monday

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon (quadriceps) was limited to individual drills during practice Monday, Aug. 15. Head coach Hue Jackson said Gordon likely will not play in the preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons Thursday, Aug. 18.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gordon may be out for the team's second preseason game, but there's a chance he could be available for the third week of the preseason. That is the 'dress rehearsal' for the regular season, and Gordon will certainly provide a boost for the passing game once he's off the suspension list.

DAL - RB Ezekiel Elliott part of walkthrough

    Source: DallasCowboys.com - David Helman

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott (hamstring) went through the team walkthrough with the first-team offense Monday, Aug. 15.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's just a walkthrough, but it can be taken as a sign that Elliott is getting back to full strength. The talented rookie missed the Cowboys first preseason game against the Rams, and we'll have to see whether or not he's going to be available for the second game against the Dolphins on Friday.

    10. BUF - RB Karlos Williams passes physical

    Source: WKBW.com - Joe Buscaglia

Buffalo Bills RB Karlos Williams (illness) passed his physical Monday, Aug. 15, and will practice after a stint on the Non-Football Illness list.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Williams is still not draftable except in very deep leagues with a four-game suspension, but if he can get back up to speed without any injuries, he should be the #2 back when he returns and set up for injury upside if LeSean McCoy goes down.

SF - Big night for RB Mike Davis

    Source: The Associated Press

San Francisco 49ers RB Mike Davis had five carries a game-high 72 yards in a 24-13 loss to the Houston Texans in the preseason Sunday Aug. 14.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Davis was seen as on the fringe of a roster spot behind Shaun Draughn and maybe DuJuan Harris, but reports are that his burst is back and he is in contention now to backup Carlos Hyde. He's not worth drafting, but if he keeps this up in the preseason, he'll be on the waiver wire watch list in case of a Hyde injury.

SD - Coach happy with TE Hunter Henry

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Michael Gehlken

San Diego Chargers TE Hunter Henry has performed well during training camp and will have a role on offense this season, according to head coach Mike McCoy.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Henry has always reminded us of a younger version of Jason Witten (Cowboys). The all-purpose TE from Arkansas is the heir apparent to Antonio Gates. He may be able to get on the field this year, but we consider 2016 a year of development for the young prospect.

SD - WR Travis Benjamin practicing

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Michael Gehlken

San Diego Chargers WR Travis Benjamin (undisclosed) is participating in practice Monday, Aug. 15.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're curious to see how Benjamin fits in with his new team. The speedy veteran should start opposite Keenan Allen, and we see him as a WR4 with upside for fantasy owners in 2016.

NYG - WR Victor Cruz could practice Wednesday

    Source: NFL.com

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (groin) may return to practice in some capacity Wednesday, Aug. 17, according to head coach Ben McAdoo.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team is in no rush with Cruz...and that's a good thing. We'll see him back on the practice field at some point.

NYG - WR Sterling Shepard limited Monday

    Source: NFL.com

New York Giants WR Sterling Shepard (groin) was limited in practice Monday, Aug. 15, because of a groin injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Giants could use Shepard a lot this year as the starter opposite superstar WR Odell Beckham Jr. They will be cautious with the explosive playmaker as he deals with this injury.

CAR - TE Greg Olsen doesn't practice

    Source: NFL.com

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen (back) did not practice Monday, Aug. 15, due to back spasms he suffered Sunday, Aug. 14.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Back problems are always tricky to deal with. The Panthers want him healthy for the regular season opener against the Broncos, so they'll monitor him closely.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Markus Wheaton (undisclosed) was able to participate in practice Monday, Aug. 15.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He's in the mix to start opposite superstar WR Antonio Brown. The Steelers should have one of the best passing attacks in the league, and Wheaton could perform like a WR5 with upside for fantasy owners. Wheaton has missed most of training camp because of a soft tissue injury.

GB - WR Jeff Janis out a few weeks

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Tom Silverstein

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis (finger) was told he'll be sidelined four to six weeks following surgery to put screws in the bones around his index finger.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That timetable means Janis is unlikely to be ready for the start of the regular season. He was competing for the no.3 WR job behind Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb, but now Janis is going to have to wait for his time to shine. In the meantime Jared Abbrederis, Ty Montgomery and Davante Adams will continue to battle for that spot.

Cleveland Browns WR Corey Coleman (hamstring) was back for 11-on-11 team drills Monday, Aug. 15.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's good for the Browns passing game to get he rookie speedster back out there. He had missed nine days with a hamstring injury, but now Coleman returns with an eye on the no.1 WR job for the Browns...at least while Josh Gordon is suspended.

PIT - QB Bruce Gradkowski has hamstring tear
    Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Bruce Gradkowski (hamstring) has a sizable hamstring tear, according to a source. He may be out for an extended period of time. QBs Landry Jones and Dustin Vaughan are the primary backups behind QB Ben Roethlisberger.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bad news for the Steelers here. Gradkowski is a seasoned veteran who gives the team an experienced backup behind Roethlisberger. The team wouldn't go off the rails if Gradkowski had to step in for a game or two. We don't feel as confident in the Steelers offense if Jones or Vaughan is the starting QB due to an injury.

SEA - RB C.J. Prosise practicing

Source: The Tacoma News Tribune - Dave Boling

Seattle Seahawks RB C.J. Prosise (hamstring) was in pads and on the field for practice Monday, Aug. 15. The extent of his participation was unclear.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
He's probably still limited with this hamstring injury. Prosise is a good receiver out of the backfield, and he could be in the mix behind starter Thomas Rawls as a change-of-pace back. We might see Rawls split some carries with Christine Michael this year, so be mindful of these potential splits when considering Rawls in your draft.

Well that didn't take long. Early reports after his elbow injury speculated the rookie could miss a month. Instead, he's back out there at practice...but that doesn't mean he's good to go for the next preseason game. Mitchell is a rookie WR we have a lot of dynasty love for. Watch his progress as he returns from this minor elbow problem.

The Ravens need pass rush punch from Suggs and Elvis Dumervil if their defense is going to work this year. Dumervil is still on the PUP/ankle with a foot/ankle issue. Suggs is coming back from his second torn achilles. He tore the left one last year, and the right one in 2012.

He is coming off of three surgeries, so it is not the "dead arm" you'd associate with being overworked later in the year. The bigger issue is that he sucks.

    Wednesday Update

ARI - Bruce Arians hospitalized Source: Arizona Cardinals - Mark Dalton

Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians was hospitalized Tuesday, Aug. 16, in San Diego. He alerted the team's medical staff that he was not feeling well and experiencing stomach pain. He was taken to a San Diego area hospital for further evaluation.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We don't know much as of Tuesday night on this. Hoping for good news Wednesday.

ARI - WR John Brown still in protocol

Source: The Arizona Republic - Kent Somers

Arizona Cardinals WR John Brown (concussion) still has not cleared the concussion protocol. The Cardinals remain concerned and are being cautious with Brown, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's the right move for the Cardinals. Brown's role is set in the offense as a deep threat who can get by defenders in a hurry. He just needs to get healthy to produce like a low-end WR3 with upside for fantasy owners. His current ADP is WR33 (6.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.

PIT - Le'Veon Bell hearing update

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Ed Bouchette

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell says no hearing date has been scheduled for the appeal of his four-game suspension.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bell seems to think that he's not going to get suspended, but we're not as optimistic. Missing a drug test is the equivalent of having a hot test. Bell reportedly missed several tests, and it will be difficult for him to avoid discipline. The superstar RB has a current ADP of RB6 (2.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

PHI - WR Dorial Green-Beckham sent to Eagles

    Source: PhiladelphiaEagles.com

Tennessee Titans WR Dorial Green-Beckham was acquired by the Philadelphia Eagles Tuesday, Aug. 16, in exchange for Eagles OG Dennis Kelly.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Titans traded him for a backup offensive lineman - so they were just ready to move on from a player that they felt was not buying into the program. He can move up the Eagles depth chart quickly because they were clearly not happy with their outside receivers. Green-Beckham is still just a speculative late round pick, and rookie Tajae Sharpe is that much closer to starting Week 1 vs. Minnesota.

NE - Gronkowski's injury considered minor

    Source: NFL.com - Ian Rapoport

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski's (undisclosed) injury at practice Monday, Aug. 15, is considered minor.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We can leave Gronkowski in the first round mix, although this is a reminder that Martellus Bennett has massive injury upside if Gronkowski has more than a minor injury at some point this year.

CAR - WR Devin Funchess to be the top dog?

    Source: ESPN.com - David Newton

Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess could outperform WR Kelvin Benjamin this season, according to beat writer David Newton.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Benjamin is still not up to game shape and Funchess has had one of the best offseasons of any Panther this year. There's no reason that they should be 100 picks apart in ADP right now.

NYJ - RB Matt Forte should be ready for opener

Source: New York Daily News - Manish Mehta

New York Jets RB Matt Forte (hamstring) said he will definitely be ready to play in Week 1. His goal is see some action in the third preseason game against the New York Giants.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Jets don't need to showcase Forte in the preseason. He's a seasoned veteran who has plenty of experience and should fill in nicely as their lead RB. However, he's going to split time with Bilal Powell this year. He's currently going off the board at RB16 (4.06) in 12-team PPR leagues.

BAL - QB Joe Flacco not at full health

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco (knee) said his surgically repaired knee isn't fully recovered yet, but he did say the knee feels great and he has not missed any practice. Flacco doesn't know if he'll be playing in the Ravens' second preseason game this weekend.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No surprise here. Flacco is coming back from a major knee injury, and there's no need to trot him out there for some preseason action. Instead, the team needs to stay concentrated on having him ready for Week 1 of the regular season.

MIA - TE Jordan Cameron struggling?

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

Miami Dolphins TE Jordan Cameron is going through 'growing pains' and has a lot on his plate, according to Dolphins head coach Adam Gase.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're disappointed to hear this news. Cameron has a chance to be Gase's new Julius Thomas this season. We liked adding him as a TE2 late in drafts, but if he doesn't overcome these growing pains then we'll start looking elsewhere for a 'lottery ticket' TE.

MIA - RB Arian Foster to debut

    Source: ESPN.com - James Walker

Miami Dolphins RB Arian Foster (Achilles') will make his preseason debut Friday, Aug. 19, against the Dallas Cowboys.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll hold our breath, as Foster is both coming back from an achilles and he has been an injury-prone player as his career has gone on. If he looks like his old self, he'll be worth a pick in the 7th-10th round range in PPR leagues because of his huge weekly upside in a pass offense that is still under construction.

KC - RB Jamaal Charles returns

Source: The Kansas City Star - Terez A. Paylor

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list, and he's participating in practice Tuesday, Aug. 16.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It appears that Charles is on schedule to resume his role as the lead back for the Chiefs in Week 1 against the Chargers. The team likes backups Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware a lot and could ease Charles in early in the season, but as long as he looks like the player he has been during his Hall of Fame level career, he'll be an easy RB1 in fantasy leagues again this year.

BAL - WR Breshad Perriman return date unknown

    Source: BaltimoreRavens.com - Garrett Downing

Baltimore Ravens WR Breshad Perriman (knee) still hasn't returned from a nagging knee injury, and head coach John Harbaugh still has no update on the second-year receiver. Harbaugh has previously said that Perriman should be ready for Week 1, but he still hasn't been activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Perriman missed all of his rookie season due to a PCL injury. In June, the second-year pro was diagnosed with a partially-torn ACL and his timetable for return was unknown. Not much has changed since then as we're still waiting on Perriman to get back on the field. Dynasty owners should still be intrigued by his upside, but there's little here for re-draft owners in 2016.

SF - QB Colin Kaepernick not practicing

Source: San Jose Mercury News - Cam Inman

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (arm) did not practice Tuesday, Aug. 16, as he continues to deal with his dead arm. Kaepernick has not thrown a pass in six days.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The 49ers are in Denver for practice on Wednesday and Thursday. They then play the Broncos on Saturday night. We're not expecting to see Kaepernick during the two days of joint practice or in the 49ers second preseason game.

SF - San Francisco nabs QB Christian Ponder

    Source: ESPN.com - Josina Anderson

Free-agent QB Christian Ponder (Broncos) was signed to a one-year deal by the San Francisco 49ers Tuesday, Aug. 16.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The 49ers needed to do something here. Colin Kaepernick has had trouble returning from three offseason surgeries, and backup Thad Lewis is out of the year after suffering a knee injury. That leaves rookie Jeff Driskel as the lone backup behind starter Blaine Gabbert. Ponder gives them veteran insurance in case Kaepernick isn't healthy and Driskel isn't ready.

ARI - S Tyrann Mathieu off the PUP list

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Arizona Cardinals FS Tyrann Mathieu (knee) was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list Tuesday, Aug. 16.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mathieu went down last December with this knee injury, but he's been recovering at a good pace. It looks like Mathieu is going to be ready for Week 1 of the regular season.

DEN - OLB DeMarcus Ware could be cleared soon

Source: NFL Network - James Palmer

Denver Broncos DE DeMarcus Ware (back) is close to a return and could be cleared for practice in four to five days, according to head coach Gary Kubiak.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ware did some work on the sidelines before practice today. He's on the NFI list with a back problem that plagued him last year. The Broncos will be cautious bringing Ware back, and his role this season will be limited to that of a part-time pass-rusher.

CIN - WR Brandon LaFell may not miss time

    Source: Bengals.com - Geoff Hobson

Updating a previous report, Cincinnati Bengals WR Brandon LaFell (hand) is still expected to be ready by Week 1 despite a torn ligament in his hand, according to head coach Marvin Lewis.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If LaFell misses time and nobody notices, does it matter? We're not excited by LaFell with his new team. Rookie Tyler Boyd is a player who could emerge opposite A.J. Green at some point this season.

MIN - RB Adrian Peterson to see preseason work?

Source: St. Paul Pioneer Press - Chris Tomasson

Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson may see his first preseason touches since 2011, provided he wants to play, according to Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer. Peterson played in a 2013 preseason game but did not handle the ball.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Peterson doesn't need any preseason reps. It would be a shock to see him get much if any work in the preseason. The Vikings are likely to use Peterson as much as possible in what might be his last season with the team.

DEN - RB Ronnie Hillman has competition for job

    Source: ESPN.com - Sheil Kapadia

Denver Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman is facing a battle for a roster spot, according to head coach Gary Kubiak. He is getting competition from rookie RB Devontae Booker and RB Kapri Bibbs for the right to back up starter RB C.J. Anderson. Hillman is expected to see plenty of action in the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 20, against the San Francisco 49ers. 'Ronnie is in a battle, a helluva a battle with Kapri and Book right now,' Kubiak said Monday, Aug. 15. 'There's no way around that. I'm just being honest with you.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hillman is no lock for the 53-man roster. He led the team in rushing last year, but that was because starter C.J. Anderson was bothered by ankle/toe injuries over the first half of the season. We could see Hillman make the team, but he might only be no.3 on the depth chart. Expect rookie Devontae Booker to win the primary backup job behind Anderson.

    Thursday Update

GB - WR Jordy Nelson cleared to practice Source: ESPN.com - Field Yates
Green Bay Packers WR Jordy Nelson (knee) passed his physical and was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list Wednesday, Aug. 17, according to a source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Great news for the Packers here. Nelson should be on track for Week 1 of the regular season, and his return will help boost the entire passing game. The veteran WR had been missing training camp due to tendinitis in his non-surgically repaired knee.

GB - WR Jordy Nelson won't play Thursday

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Tom Silverstein

Green Bay Packers WR Jordy Nelson (knee) will be held out of the preseason game Thursday, Aug. 18, against the Oakland Raiders.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Of course he won't. Nelson just got activated from the PUP list. We may not see him much at all in the preseason.

SEA - RB Thomas Rawls making progress

    Source: ESPN.com - Sheil Kapadia

Seattle Seahawks RB Thomas Rawls (knee) has been performing well during practice and may be able to play in the team's third preseason game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Keep an eye on this situation as camp rolls on. Rawls should be the lead RB for the Seahawks this year, and there's a chance he could perform like a solid RB2 all season. His current ADP (RB13, 3.12 in 12-team PPR) might be a little rich considering the recent reports of backup Christine Michael getting worked into the offense a bit more. We like targeting Rawls in the early fourth, but make sure to snare Michael as a late-round flier if you can.

SEA - TE Jimmy Graham uncertain for Week 1

    Source: ESPN.com - Sheil Kapadia

Seattle Seahawks TE Jimmy Graham (knee) should see more work on the field over the next few weeks, but head coach Pete Carroll said the team is not sure if Graham will be ready for Week 1. 'Really we're shooting for: Where is he at the start of the season? And we'll evaluate then on how much longer it may take, or he may be ready. We don't know that yet. But he feels good,' Carroll said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Graham wasn't a good fit for the Seahawks last year, and quite frankly the offense was better when he was out. We'll see if that changes this year, but don't get too excited about his prospects. Graham will get drafted on name value, but his real value might be that of a TE2. His current ADP is TE11 (10.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

NE - TE Rob Gronkowski held out of practice

    Source: ESPNBoston.com - Mike Reiss

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (undisclosed) was held out of practice on Tuesday, Aug. 16, after an injury scare the previous day. It's unknown if he'll return for the third day of joint practices with the Chicago Bears on Wednesday, Aug. 17.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's no reason to change Gronkowski's position on our boards unless this becomes a matter of weeks, not days, and costs the all-world tight end a chance to play in the preseason. In the meantime, Martellus Bennett gets to build more and more chemistry with Tom Brady and Jimmy Garoppolo.

OAK - RB DeAndre Washington claims No. 2 RB job

Source: San Francisco Chronicle - Vic Tafur

Oakland Raiders RB DeAndre Washington has grabbed hold of the No. 2 running back job heading into the team's second preseason game. 'We've been seeing signs during camp of improving the running game,' said head coach Jack Del Rio.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Washington is a rookie RB we're really keeping our eyes on. He's a compact runner who can run inside before bursting to the outside. Washington has good foot frequency and does a good job of making defenders miss in tight spaces. He's competing to be the backup behind Latavius Murray in the regular season.

NO - TE Coby Fleener works with starters

Source: The New Orleans Times-Picayune - Jeff Duncan

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener lined up with the first-team offense at practice Wednesday, August 17.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fleener is an interesting TE to consider for your fantasy team this year. The Saints should use him early and often, and he should become a favorite target of QB Drew Brees. If he caught 70 passes this year and finished as a top-5 fantasy TE we wouldn't be surprised. Fleener has a current ADP of TE5 (6.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

NYJ - RB Matt Forte practicing Wednesday

    Source: SNY - Ralph Vacchiano

New York Jets RB Matt Forte (hamstring) is participating in team drills during practice Wednesday, Aug. 17.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A good sign that Forte is on the right track. The Jets should use him as their leading rusher this year, but he will split some touches with backup Bilal Powell. We view him as a high-end RB2 in PPR leagues. Forte has a current ADP of RB16 (4.06) in 12-team PPR leagues.

DAL - RB Ezekiel Elliott unlikely to play Friday

    Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer

Updating a previous report, Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott (hamstring) returned to practice on Tuesday, Aug. 16, but did not take part in a full session and is not expected to play in the team's preseason game on Friday, Aug. 19, against the Miami Dolphins.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

As long as Elliott is a full go for the third preseason game and looks good, he'll be worth the premium pick that he has cost in fantasy drafts since the Cowboys took him at #4.

NE - WR Julian Edelman looks sharp

Source: The Boston Globe - Jim McBride

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman (foot) looked quick in his first full 11-on-11 day Tuesday, Aug. 16. He sported an impressive double move to win a one-on-one drill.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Edelman was a WR1 last year before he went down, but he might take a small step back this year with the addition of Martellus Bennett, especially in the red zone. He's still an excellent WR2, but one that comes with increased injury risk based on his track record.

ARI - Lofty comparisons for RB David Johnson

    Source: ESPN.com - Dan Graziano

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson has had a good training camp, and he has been impressive his teammates and the coaching staff. He averaged 135 yards from scrimmage per game while posting eight rushing touchdowns, four receiving scores and one kickoff return for touchdown. His skills as a receiver out of the backfield are drawing lofty comparisons. 'I mean, probably the best receiving back I've seen,' general manager Steve Keim said Tuesday, Aug. 16. 'A lot of people have compared him to Marshall Faulk, and our coaches had Marshall Faulk in Indy. I think he's very similar in some way athletically and in terms of ball-catching skills to Marshall.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Johnson was already an outstanding receiver coming out of college, but he seems to have learned to run inside with more courage. Even if he shares carries with Chris Johnson, he has top 3 running back upside in the Cardinals' aggressive offense.

GB - WR Davante Adams trying to shine

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Tom Silverstein

Green Bay Packers WR Davante Adams has had some good moments and some bad ones in training camp, according to beat writer Tom Silverstein. It is believed Adams needs to make a statement in the preseason game Thursday, Aug. 18, against the Oakland Raiders.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Adams was supposed to shine last year after Jordy Nelson went down with injury. Instead, Adams fizzled and his inconsistent play from college at Fresno State still continues to plague him today. We're looking at other WRs like Jared Abbrederis or Ty Montgomery to win the no.3 WR job in Green Bay.

WAS - No timetable for WR Josh Doctson

    Source: NFL.com

Washington Redskins WR Josh Doctson (Achilles') still does not have a timetable for his return, but head coach Jay Gruden said Doctson will not be rushed back.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Achilles' injuries aren't quite as devastating as they used to be. That being said, Washington should and will take it easy on the rookie as he returns from this injury. With Doctson down, it opens the door for second-year WR Jamison Crowder to work as the no.3 WR behind DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon.

SF - QB Colin Kaepernick limited

    Source: CSNBayArea.com - Matt Maiocco

Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (arm) participated in the handoff drills during practice Wednesday, Aug. 17, but did not participate in any of the throwing drills. Kaepernick did do some throwing on a side field.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The 49ers are having joint practices with the Broncos on Wednesday and Thursday. The offense looked horrible against the Broncos defense on Wednesday, and QB Blaine Gabbert threw two interceptions returned for TDs. If healthy, Kaepernick could win this starting job. Gabbert may begin the season as the starter, but he doesn't have a firm grip on that job.

KC - WR Jeremy Maclin sits out Wednesday

    Source: KCChiefs.com - Pete Sweeney

Kansas City Chiefs WR Jeremy Maclin (groin) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Aug. 17, because of a groin injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Maclin is considered day-to-day with this injury. Don't be surprised if they sit him for the Chiefs second preseason game. If healthy, we see Maclin as a mid-range WR2 for fantasy owners.

JAX - WR Allen Hurns misses practice

    Source: Jaguars.com - John Oehser

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Allen Hurns (knee) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Aug. 17, because of a knee injury. Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley says that Hurns will practice on Thursday after receiving the day off.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hurns is set to play a lot from the slot (again) this year for the Jaguars. He ran almost 40 percent of his 555 routes from that spot in 2015 and finished as the 14th-best fantasy WR. This year, the Jaguars may run a bit more in the red zone with free agent addition RB Chris Ivory. That means Hurns may be more of a WR3 for fantasy owners in 2016. His current ADP is WR31 (6.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

NYG - WR Victor Cruz works on side

    Source: ESPN.com - Jordan Raanan

Updating a previous report, New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (groin) did not practice Wednesday, Aug. 17, but was able to do more work on the sidelines, according to head coach Ben McAdoo.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's no need to rush the veteran back. The Giants have been incredibly cautious with Cruz as he returns from multiple injuries. That's not going to change, and we don't expect to see him much if at all in the preseason.

BAL - WR Steve Smith activated

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith (Achilles') was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list Wednesday, Aug. 17, and likely will participate in practice Monday, Aug. 22.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We are so happy that Smith didn't retire. He may not be the player he used to be, but Smith has made a career of proving people wrong. We expect him to help move the chains for the Ravens passing game and see him as a WR5 for fantasy owners in 2016.

KC - RB Jamaal Charles does more work

    Source: KCChiefs.com - B.J. Kissel

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) was limited Wednesday, Aug. 17, but he got through a larger workload than he did the previous day.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Charles is on track to play Week 1, and while the team could use Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West to ease him in, he will have every chance to return his second-round draft pick value as long as he can handle it.

BAL - WR Mike Wallace endearing himself

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens WR Mike Wallace has caught fade routes in the end zone, tough catches on back-shoulder throws and has been a frequent target on underneath routes in camp. He has been a reliable target as far as hands go. 'I think he is going to be a really big hit for us,' QB Joe Flacco said. 'We all know he can run. But just the way he runs his routes and how good is he at the top of it and coming back to you, and how sure his hands have been. I don't know if I've seen him drop a pass.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Ravens were excited enough about Wallace to spend 4.5 million guaranteed dollars to land him. Breshad Perriman's continued knee issues could open the door for Wallace to be a boom/bust WR3/Flex and DFS option in a high volume pass offense. He's currently going in the 15th round or later.

CHI - TE Zach Miller meets with team doctors

    Source: ESPNChicago.com - Jeff Dickerson

Chicago Bears TE Zach Miller (concussion), who returned to practice on Saturday, Aug. 13, was absent on Tuesday, Aug. 16, and while head coach John Fox indicated Miller hadn't suffered a setback he did meet with team doctors.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Miller is more than two weeks removed from his concussion, which is longer than the typical timeline during the season. The Bears could just be extra cautious because it is the preseason, but we'll need to watch this. They have the thinnest backup TE group in the league, so losing Miller for any amount of time in the regular season will hurt.

SD - WR Travis Benjamin building trust with Rivers

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Michael Gehlken

San Diego Chargers WR Travis Benjamin was singled out by QB Philip Rivers for his work during a joint practice against the Arizona Cardinals on Tuesday, Aug. 16, specifically for their timing on a comeback route that Rivers deemed his 'favorite play' of the evening.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Benjamin should improve the "deep threat" receiver option from Malcom Floyd's level of play in recent years. Philip Rivers is easily the best quarterback he has played with in his career, so Benjamin might end up being a value as a bench receiver in the 9th/10th round of drafts.

CHI - WR Kevin White impresses in joint practice

    Source: ProFootballWeekly.com - Hub Arkush

Chicago Bears WR Kevin White was impressive during a two-day joint practice against the New England Patriots according to Hub Arkush, showing physicality and precise route-running against New England's top corners.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

White's physical abilities are unquestioned and he should shine in a practice setting. Whether that will carry over to the field in what amounts to his rookie year is more questionable, and it makes White a bench wide receiver worth a mid-round pick in redraft leagues. He does have a ton of injury upside if Alshon Jeffery can't stay healthy.

MIA - TE Jordan Cameron encouraged to stay

Source: The Miami Herald - Barry Jackson

Miami Dolphins TE Jordan Cameron took a pay cut to stay with the team, partly due to the advice of Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas. The former Denver Broncos tight end told Cameron he would like head coach Adam Gase's system. Cameron said 'one of my good friends, Julius Thomas, who played for (Adam Gase), said, 'You've got to play for this guy.' He does a good job of putting (tight ends) in spots to succeed.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Cameron and really the whole Dolphins offense have been lackluster under the new coaching regime, so Thomas's advice to Cameron is not translating to fantasy advice yet. Cameron has a great track record and measureables, but his game dropped off a cliff last year. He's only worth a very late pick, and might be better suited to be a waiver wire watch list candidate.

    Friday Update

NE - Plenty of action for TE Martellus Bennett? Source: ESPNBoston.com - Mike Reiss

New England Patriots TEs Martellus Bennett and Rob Gronkowski could be on the field together for up to 80% of the Patriots' plays, in the opinion of ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss. Head coach Bill Belichick views the tight ends as interchangeable and believes they can cause problems for opposing defenses when they're on the field at the same time.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Adding Bennett was a great move for the Patriots this offseason. Gronkowski is still their top TE, but Bennett could easily perform like a TE2 with upside for fantasy owners. He's getting drafted at TE13 (11.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

NE - RB Dion Lewis remains out

    Source: MassLive.com - Kevin Duffy

New England Patriots RB Dion Lewis (knee) has yet to practice in training camp. Lewis is nine months removed from surgery to repair his anterior cruciate ligament and has continued to rehab.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Patriots are just being the Patriots and being cautious. We've seen Lewis' ADP dip a bit to 49 overall and RB19, but we still have high hopes for him and think he could be a solid RB2/RB3, especially in PPR leagues. Do keep an eye on this though. There has been some talk he could remain on the PUP. Stay tuned.

LA - QB Case Keenum still in the lead

    Source: ESPN.com - Alden Gonzalez

Los Angeles Rams QB Case Keenum is still clearly in the lead ahead of QB Jared Goff for the starting spot, according to head coach Jeff Fisher. Goff took a handful of snaps in practice Wednesday, Aug. 17, with the first-team and is expected to play a series or two with the starters in the second preseason game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's sort of the opposite of what we expected when they moved up and drafted Goff. The expectation has been that he will be thrown into the fire and forced to improve on the fly. Making him sit a year isn't a bad idea. On the other hand, if Fisher really is in line for a contract extension, he might be comfortable to play the long game with his rookie quarterback and nurse him along. We wouldn't want either guy on our fantasy roster, more because we expect all Todd Gurley all the time than because of their ability.

PHI - WR Nelson Agholor not progressing

Source: The Philadelphia Inquirer - Jeff McLane

Philadelphia Eagles WR Nelson Agholor hasn't progressed much during his second offseason, typically when the lights start to go on for receivers. Beat writer Jeff McLane says Agholor has struggled to catch balls, create separation and run consistent routes and it showed in the preseason opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Agholor has been a disappointment, which might be why the team traded for Dorial Green-Beckham despite his own issues. Right now we see Agholor as a WR6 - just depth - but if he doesn't pick up the pace, he might not even be that good. We're not sure what to expect from this offense either, never anything we like to feel this far into summer.

PIT - TE Jesse James in line to start

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Jesse James would start if TE Ladarius Green (concussion, ankle) is not ready by the start of the season. James has developed a nice red-zone rapport with QB Ben Roethlisberger, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Right now we have him as a TE3, but a good couple of showings in preseason games could be the ticket to a higher output and ranking. Keep an eye on him this weekend and next week in the Game 3 dress rehearsal for the regular season.

PIT - IR an option for TE Ladarius Green

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Green has forever been plagued by injury and it seems that beat keeps going on. It's time to put away the "upside" label, as well as your plans to draft him. Jesse James is worth watching and has looked good working with Ben Roethlisberger.

CAR - No brace for WR Kelvin Benjamin

    Source: NFL.com - Jeffri Chadiha

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) doesn't plan on wearing a brace to protect the torn anterior cruciate ligament he's healing from. Benjamin said a brace feels uncomfortable. Head coach Ron Rivera agrees with the decision.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There is some risk to this, as if he discards it too early he could re-injure his leg, but you don't want your best receiver to be uncomfortable. We think Benjamin could have a very nice season, but we'll have to see how he can move and how he fits into the offense now that he's healthy (and with WR Devin Funchess emerging). We see him as a WR2/WR3 style guy this season.

PIT - OLB James Harrison to talk with NFL

    Source: ESPN - Chris Mortensen

Pittsburgh Steelers LB James Harrison has agreed to talk with the NFL regarding the allegations that they received performance-enhancing drugs, according to sources. Harrison is scheduled to meet with the NFL Monday, Aug. 29.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Harrison was the leader of the players holding out against meeting with the league, so this is big for the NFL. It takes place after the deadline, but the NFL will just be happy to have Harrison in to answer some questions.

GB - Two Packers LBs to talk with NFL

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This was the only way this was going to end. Really, it's hard to tell a boss "no" when they need a meeting like this and it gives Matthews and Peppers the chance to clear the air. Hopefully, that is all that comes of this.

DEN - Denver to give QBs equal snaps

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeff Legwold

Updating a previous report, Denver Broncos QB Trevor Siemian will start against the San Francisco 49ers Saturday, Aug. 20, but head coach Gary Kubiak said QB Mark Sanchez will receive the same amount of snaps during the game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

As we said earlier, they will each get about one and a half quarters of football. This should go a long way towards telling us who will be the starter next week and going forward, though if Sanchez can't beat the second-year Siemian cleanly already, you have to wonder if he can at all.

MIA - Three Miami linemen expected to play

    Source: ESPN.com - James Walker

Miami Dolphins DE Mario Williams, DE Cameron Wake and DT Ndamukong Suh are expected to play in the preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys Friday, Aug. 19. All three players did not play in the first preseason game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This should be a fascinating test for the Miami defense. On paper, that is a potent combination but they are going against the best offensive line in the league. Get your popcorn ready, 'cause it's gonna be a show.

DEN - DE Derek Wolfe should be fine

    Source: NFL.com - Jeremy Bergman

Denver Broncos DE Derek Wolfe (ankle) is expected to play in the preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers Saturday, Aug. 20, even though he suffered a mild ankle injury during practice Wednesday, Aug. 17.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Broncos can breathe a sigh of relief here. Wolfe has been amazing at training camp, and his strong play helps the Broncos field the best defense in the league -- and they could be even better this year.

HOU - QB Tom Savage No. 2 for now

Source: Houston Chronicle - Aaron Wilson

Houston Texans QB Tom Savage is currently the team's primary backup at quarterback, according to head coach Bill O'Brien. O'Brien said Savage has really improved since last season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Savage has two more years on his contract and they would like to see if he is worth keeping around or worth more in trade. Last season he was hurt with a shoulder injury, so this is essentially his sophomore year. This is Brock Osweiler's team, but if he implodes, we might see something from Savage.

KC - RB Jamaal Charles practices in full

    Source: ESPN.com - Adam Teicher

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) practiced in full Thursday, Aug. 18, for the first time. He won't play in the second preseason game, though.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
They'll be cautious with him, even though they have an incredibly deep backfield. In fact, it could be that depth is influencing that decision as well, since they need to decide whether they cut one of their other backs. Getting Charcandrick West, Spencer Ware and Knile Davis some more burn could help them make a decision. Of course, the Chiefs know you can never have too many backs. The guy to own here is Charles as an RB1, but handcuffing him with West or Ware isn't a terrible idea.

JAX - WR Allen Hurns back at practice

    Source: Jaguars.com - John Oehser

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Allen Hurns (knee) returned to practice Thursday, Aug. 18.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The other half of the Allen and Allen show (Robinson being the first half), Hurns should build on a great 2015, where he had five 100+ yard games, scoring at least one touchdown in each. His ability to produce big plays is exciting to contemplate heading into 2016 make him a solid WR3/WR4 with upside.

DAL - CB Morris Claiborne having his best camp

Source: The Dallas Morning News - Kate Hairopoulos

Dallas Cowboys CB Morris Claiborne said he is having his best training camp of his career, and he has been going at it with WR Dez Bryant on a daily basis to make each other better. Claiborne said this is the first camp he has been healthy.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Let's be honest here—that bar was set tremendously low. The Dallas defense is without multiple starters to kick off the season, so Claiborne will see a lot of work early on.

TEN - Chances better for WR Andre Johnson

    Source: ESPN.com - Paul Kuharsky

Tennessee Titans WR Andre Johnson was no guarantee for a roster spot earlier this week, but the trade of WR Dorial Green-Beckham to the Philadelphia Eagles increases his chances of making this team. Johnson might be battling with WRs Harry Douglas and Tre McBride for one or two receiver spots.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Johnson and Douglas are both well past their primes so if there is a cut, we expect it to be one of them. Neither brings much to the table save veteran savvy and "I remember when" old-man stories, and none of that helps your fantasy team, so don't bother drafting them.

TEN - WR Kendall Wright to work from slot

    Source: ESPN.com - Paul Kuharsky

Tennessee Titans WR Kendall Wright (hamstring) is expected to serve as the team's third wide receiver working out of the slot. He has been dealing with a hamstring injury since early in camp, but in the first few days he appeared energized, according to beat writer Paul Kuharsky.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is probably Wright's last chance to show he can produce. His numbers have continually declined over the last three years, in part because he has struggled on the field, but also because he has struggled to stay healthy. That he is already battling a hamstring issue is concerning and makes us confident he is no more than a WR6 at best.

TEN - TE Delanie Walker to be targeted most?

    Source: ESPN.com - Paul Kuharsky

Tennessee Titans TE Delanie Walker is expected to remain the primary pass target, according to beat writer Paul Kuharsky, although the team will try to spread the ball around to a lot of different people.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A combination of things could be at play here. It could be that quarterback Marcus Mariota is still getting in sync with rookie Tajae Sharpe and newly arrived Rishard Matthews. It could be that Mariota is not yet comfortable with longer passes and will be expected to throw short stuff against mismatched linebackers. It could just be that Walker and Mariota are just really good as a pair. Whatever the reason, it reaffirms our faith that Walker is a TE1 in fantasy circles.

NE - WR Malcolm Mitchell leading for X role

    Source: ESPNBoston.com

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell posted four grabs for 55 yards on 15 snaps in the preseason opener, and he is considered a leading candidate for the 'X' receiver role.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Two notable things here. First, Mitchell is in a position where he could be pretty productive in this offense, despite a lack of productive history for rookie receivers with Bill Belichick. Second, it appears he has leapfrogged Danny Amendola, Keshawn Martin and Aaron Dobson. A deep threat may not be a tremendous asset in this offense, with Tom Brady's declining arm strength, so right now we see him as a WR5 but he certainly has enough upside to warrant watching him over the next few preseason games.

    Saturday Update

PIT - Le'Veon Bell's suspension reduced Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell's suspension has been reduced to three games, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bell becomes more viable in the first round now with one fewer game to absorb. DeAngelo Williams' value takes an even bigger hit than what Bell gained, with 1/4 of his guaranteed starts vanishing. Perhaps it makes pulling off the Bell/Williams combination easier. It's hard to understand why Bell is getting his suspension reduced when the substance abuse policies are so cut and dried, but the Steelers and Bell drafters have to be happy about it.

WAS - AC sprain for RB Matt Jones

    Source: Redskins.com

Updating a previous report, Washington Redskins RB Matt Jones (shoulder) suffered an AC sprain in his left shoulder Friday, Aug. 19.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Depending on the grade of the injury, it could be anywhere from 2-4 weeks to surgery for Jones. Even if he's back for the regular season opener, a shoulder injury can be tough for a running back, because they take a lot of hits on the shoulders and use them to initiate contact on short yardage runs. Look for Washington to bring back Pierre Thomas or sign another veteran.

SEA - RB Thomas Rawls back next week

    Source: ESPN.com - Sheil Kapadia

Seattle Seahawks RB Thomas Rawls (ankle) will practice fully next week, according to head coach Pete Carroll. Rawls could play in the third preseason game, but Carroll said they'd make that decision late next week.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Christine Michael continues to leave an impression with his play. Rawls should get the majority of carries once he is back to 2015 form, but Michael can certainly force the Seahawks to rethink that with the carries he will get as Rawls is eased back in during the early season schedule.

GB - WR Davante Adams having 'very good camp'

    Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Adams has ended up in the #3 wide receiver more by default than by seizing it, but he will get the position to open the season. Jared Cook may add a receiving threat at tight end, but as long as Adams is consistent, he could make himself rosterable in typical leagues. There are worse players to target late in your draft.

PHI - RB Kenjon Barner the No. 2

    Source: CSNPhilly.com - Reuben Frank

Philadelphia Eagles RB Kenjon Barner has made it clear that he is the No. 2 running back behind RB Ryan Mathews, according to beat writer Reuben Frank. He has rushed 13 times for 76 yards in the first two preseason games.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Barner is probably #2 behind Mathews as a between the tackles runner, but he is not overly impressive in this area, and Darren Sproles is a better receiver out of the backfield. This offense is looking like one of the league's weaker units, but we'll keep Barner on our waiver wire watch list.

GB - RB Eddie Lacy runs well

Source: The Associated Press - Todd McMahon

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy had nine carries for 45 yards and a touchdown in a 20-12 preseason win over the Oakland Raiders Thursday, Aug. 18.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lacy looked more like 2014 Lacy than 2015 Lacy, which could make him a value pick in the third round. The Packers offense is looking up now that Jordy Nelson is back and Lacy appears to be over his 2015 doldrums.

CLE - WR Terrelle Pryor catches long score

    Source: ESPN.com - Pat McManamon

Cleveland Browns WR Terrelle Pryor had one catch, a 50-yard touchdown, in a 24-13 loss to the Atlanta Falcons Thursday, Aug. 18.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Pryor has moved squarely onto the late round radar with big plays in each of the first two preseason games. He seems to separate downfield with little effort and plays the ball more than well enough for a convert to the wide receiver position. Robert Griffin III's deep ball bucket accuracy only boosts the chances that Pryor carries over his downfield game to the regular season.

CHI - RB Jeremy Langford looks sharp

    Source: ESPN.com

Chicago Bears RB Jeremy Langford had eight carries for 55 yards and a touchdown and one catch for eight yards in a 23-22 preseason loss to the New England Patriots Thursday, Aug. 18.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Watch Langford's current ADP (RB24 5.10 in 12-team PPR leagues) rise after this game. He's a RB2/RB3 who is going to split time with Kadeem Carey and maybe even rookie Jordan Howard will sneak into some action. Langford is the lead back, but if the Bears fall behind a lot (their defense is not great) we don't expect them to pound the rock on the ground.

MIN - QB Teddy Bridgewater has sore shoulder

    Source: ESPN.com - Ben Goessling

Minnesota Vikings QB Teddy Bridgewater (shoulder) did not play in the preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks Thursday, Aug. 18, because of a sore shoulder, according to sources. Bridgewater likely would have played if it was a regular season game, but the Vikings decided to keep him out.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This clears up somewhat of a mystery, which tends to encourage speculation. Bridgewater was a marginal pick in fantasy leagues, so this doesn't really move his stock, but it's something to track for the value of the Vikings passcatchers.

SEA - RB Christine Michael plays well again

    Source: ESPN.com - Sheil Kapadia

Seattle Seahawks RB Christine Michael rushed for 55 yards on 10 carries in the preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings Thursday, Aug. 18. He has rushed for 99 yards in the first two preseason games and is averaging 5.82 yards per rush.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Michael is set to get around 6-10 carries a game when the season opens, with Thomas Rawls entrenched as the starter, but if Rawls is slow coming back from his ankle surgery, or if Michael plays up to his tremendous raw ability, he could force something like an RBBC. He's part of the second half of draft plans now.

DET - RB Theo Riddick worked with starters

    Source: ESPN.com - Michael Rothstein

Detroit Lions RB Theo Riddick received all of the snaps with the first-team offense during the preseason game Thursday, Aug. 18, in part because RB Ameer Abdullah (shoulder) did not play.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Riddick is not much of a runner between the tackles, but he is one of the best receiving backs in the league. If Abdullah were to miss time in the regular season, Zach Zenner or Stevan Ridley (whoever makes the team as the "big back") would likely get carries over Riddick.

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford said he hopes the offense plays at a quicker pace this season. He has gone 12-for-17 for 171 yards in two preseason games when the team has used an up-tempo offense.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Stafford has a chance to be in the top 3-5 in the league in attempts. That alone makes him worth a pick at his current ADP outside of the top 15 quarterbacks.

PIT - Eli Rogers has solid outing

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Eli Rogers caught four passes for 39 yards in the preseason game Thursday, Aug. 18. He has been performing well as a slot receiver and has shown a quick first step that allows him navigate the middle of the field.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rogers could be a starter in this offense as the third receiver with Markus Wheaton on the outside with Sammie Coates having troubles in the preseason. He's worth a look in deep leagues, should be added in deep PPR dynasty and will definitely be on our waiver wire speed dial list because of the quality of this pass offense.

PIT - QB Landry Jones expected to keep job

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Landry Jones is expected to keep the No. 2 quarterback job because he had a solid training camp and there are not many options available in free agency. Jones has thrown for 166 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions in two preseason games.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones kept the offense's pulse going last year - barely - and even fed Antonio Brown's 6-124 line in his one full start - representing Brown's best game without Ben Roethlisberger last year. It's too late in the game for the Steelers to upgrade from Jones now that Bruce Gradkowski is sidelined with a torn hamstring.

ATL - QB Matt Ryan shows improvement

    Source: USA TODAY Fantasy Sports

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan had a much better outing in his second preseason game Thursday, August 18, versus the Cleveland Browns, after going 0-for-4 and leading two three-and-outs in the team's exhibition opener. Ryan followed that up by completing 8-of-12 passes for 78 yards over three possessions.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ryan still has Oakland, Carolina, Denver and Seattle in the first six weeks of the season, so even if you are looking at him as a streaming QB option, he'll be hard to trust until late October.

NE - RB LeGarrette Blount battling RB Tyler Gaffney?

    Source: MassLive.com - Kevin Dillon

New England Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount is 'likely' battling RB Tyler Gaffney the club's final running back spot. RBs Dion Lewis and James White 'appear to be locked in' as the receiving running backs, while RB Brandon Bolden 'figures' to have a spot on the roster thanks to his role on special teams. Blount and Gaffney are competing for the 'between-the-tackles kind of role.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Blount has to be in the lead with his proven track record and performance in Week 2 of the preseason. He was more successful in short yardage, and the team knows he can hold up over the course of a game and a season. Gaffney could easily catch on elsewhere after a strong summer in his own right.

SD - DE Joey Bosa contract talks resume

Source: USA TODAY Sports - Jarrett Bell

San Diego Chargers DE Joey Bosa and the club have resumed their contract negotiating talks. The two sides are still trying to figure out how soon the rookie out of Ohio State will receive his payments on a $17 million signing bonus and whether offset language will be included in the contract to protect the team in the event that Bosa is released before his fourth season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The beginning of the season will encourage some urgency on behalf of both sides, but precious time and goodwill has already been lost. The Chargers got steamrolled by the Titans in the first preseason game, and the longer they go without Bosa, the less wind there will be in their sails going into the season.

CIN - WR Tyler Boyd stands out

    Source: NFL.com - Nick Shook

Cincinnati Bengals WR Tyler Boyd is turning heads this preseason and has begun to separate himself from the pack behind WR A.J. Green. Boyd had two catches for 38 yards and a touchdown in the second preseason game. '(He) does an awesome job of being in the right place, knowing what to do and how to do it and you can't say enough good things about T.B.,' QB A.J. McCarron said. 'If I have anything to say he's always all ears and doesn't question it. He's awesome, can't say enough good things about him.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Boyd is a crafty receiver at the catch point with terrific body control and hands. He's not going to make much happen after the catch or create a lot of separation, but if he's the #2 target to open the season, he could be a spot start in deep leagues and interesting DFS option. Brandon LaFell is sidelined with a hand injury and Tyler Eifert is out recovering from ankle surgery, so the targets could be there for Boyd in September.

HOU - DE J.J. Watt progressing, status still unclear

    Source: ESPN - Ed Werder

Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (back) has head coach Bill O'Brien encouraged by Watt's progress from back surgery. However, O'Brien is still unsure about Watt's availability for the first two games of the season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Chicago and Kansas City would be the beneficiaries of Watt's absence. He could also take a game or two to ramp up after returning from back surgery, New England (sans Tom Brady) and Tennessee could get a little easier matchup in Weeks 3 and 4. We would still count on Watt to look like himself pretty quickly after his return.

    PHI - Paul Turner impressing

    Source: CSNPhilly.com - Reuben Frank

Philadelphia Eagles WR Paul Turner has been the best wide receiver for the team aside from WR Jordan Matthews, in the opinion of beat writer Reuben Frank. He has made highlight plays, including a one-handed catch in the second preseason game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a sign of the dire straits the Eagles are in at wide receiver. Turner has been a steady performer and stayed on the field in camp, which is more than the other undrafted wide receivers can say. He has even gotten snaps with the first team as a slot receiver with Jordan Matthews out. Turner might force the Eagles to keep six receivers or push Chris Givens and/or Rueben Randle out of a roster spot.

CLE - QB Robert Griffin III plays well

    Source: ESPN.com - Pat McManamon

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III completed six of his eight passes for 96 yards and two touchdowns and ran three times for 36 yards in a 24-13 preseason loss to the Atlanta Falcons Thursday, Aug. 18.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Griffin had his confidence back on his two touchdown strikes and ability to pick a large chunk of yards as a runner. We should at least be open to him finding something like his old form with an optimistic, offensive-minded head coach, a good offensive line, and a set of weapons that is starting to come together, with Josh Gordon arriving in October.

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (foot) could play against the New York Giants Saturday, Aug. 20, according to head coach Rex Ryan.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Watkins is on track to be full speed to open the season against the Ravens. We will project him as a WR1 any time he is not a game-time decision, but Watkins is often available for a WR2 price in the third round because of his injury history/risk.

ATL - RB Devonta Freeman efficient Thursday

    Source: ESPN.com

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman had four carries for 42 yards and a touchdown in a 24-13 preseason win over the Cleveland Browns Thursday, Aug. 18.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Same as it ever was. Freeman is the lead back for the Falcons, and he should perform like a RB1 in 2016. Sure, in theory he could lose some touches to second-year back Tevin Coleman....if the kid is ever healthy....but that's not enough to scare us off of Freeman's current ADP of RB8 (2.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

    Sunday Update

BUF - RB Karlos Williams released Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

The Buffalo Bills released RB Karlos Williams.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mike Gillislee will back up LeSean McCoy, but watch out for fifth round rookie Jonathan Williams to push Gillislee and be part of a committee if McCoy goes down. Reggie Bush will be a return man and perhaps play some on passing downs if he makes the team, but that is not a given.

CHI - RB Jeremy Langford in a walking boot

Source: Chicago Bears Radio Network - Zach Zaidman

Chicago Bears RB Jeremy Langford (foot) was spotted with a walking boot on his left foot during practice Saturday, Aug. 20.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's probably minor, as we haven't heard about any injury, but this we'll be watching to see if there's any reason to move Langford down after his preseason value peaked following a great preseason Week 2 performance.

DAL - RB Ezekiel Elliott may play soon

Source: The Dallas Morning News - Brandon George

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott (hamstring) hopefully will be able to play in the third preseason game, according to executive vice president Stephen Jones.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If Elliott can't go in the third preseason game, it will be hard to justify spending a first-round pick on him because of the risk of recurrence of what would appear to be more than a minor hamstring issue. The Cowboys want to be careful with the cornerstone of their running game, but it is also important to get him some game action so he can be ready for Week 1. Alfred Morris is emerging as a clear handcuff, so that helps offset some of the risk of taking Elliott early.

TEN - WR Tajae Sharpe continues to impress

Tennessee Titans WR Tajae Sharpe finished with six receptions for 68 yards against the Carolina Panthers on Saturday, Aug. 20.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sharpe is basically set as a rookie starter for the Titans. He probably won't have fantasy value on his own, but he'll be good enough to hold down the weekly and season-long ceilings of the other targets.

ARI - WR Larry Fitzgerald dealing with MCL sprain

    Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald (knee) didn't play against the San Diego Chargers Friday, Aug. 19, and head coach Bruce Arians said Fitzgerald is dealing with a 'slight' sprain of the medial collateral ligament.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fitzgerald has played through more often as his career has gone on, and he has generally played well through them. This shouldn't affect his ADP with three weeks to go until the season starts.

DAL - QB Dak Prescott proving his worth

Source: USA TODAY Sports - Lorenzo Reyes

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott led four scoring drives in the first half against the Miami Dolphins Friday, Aug. 19, and owner Jerry Jones said he doesn't see a veteran quarterback coming in as long as Prescott continues to play well.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Prescott is going to be better than any backup the team could get now. Dynasty league players have to take a long look at him on the waiver wire, as his running ability makes him a very intriguing stash with Tony Romo in the later part of his career.

BUF - RB LeSean McCoy visits the end zone

    Source: ESPN.com

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy was held to no yards on five carries, but he caught four passes for 58 yards - including a 13-yard touchdown - against the New York Giants on Saturday, Aug. 20.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

McCoy is one of the few true feature backs in the league and he's going in the third round. The injuries did pile up last year, but McCoy was running well before going down in December.

TEN - QB Marcus Mariota mostly sharp against Carolina

    Source: ESPN.com

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota went 9-for-10 for 104 yards with a touchdown and an interception against the Carolina Panthers on Saturday, Aug. 20. He added 13 yards on the ground before giving way to QB Matt Cassel early in the second quarter.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mariota has been highly efficient this summer, but it doesn't appear that he'll be piloting a high volume pass offense or get a lot of opportunities as a runner by design. He's a QBBC/streamer option because of the nature of his offense.

BUF - RB Reggie Bush expected to win No. 2 RB job

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Rodak

Buffalo Bills RB Reggie Bush has been considered the favorite to serve as the direct backup for RB LeSean McCoy since the former was signed earlier this month, even before the release of Karlos Williams, according to ESPN.com's Mike Rodak.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bush hasn't done anything meaningful on the field for over a year, with only 12 touches last year, so he's not really worth running out to get as a handcuff to McCoy. He'll be on the waiver wire watch list to open the season, but we suspect that he would yield to another back soon enough if he was asked to play a significant number of snaps.

BUF - RB Mike Gillislee leaves with head injury

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Rodak

Buffalo Bills RB Mike Gillislee (head) left the game following a hard hit at the end of the first quarter on Saturday, Aug. 20, against the New York Giants and is being evaluated for concussion.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Reggie Bush is now the backup to LeSean McCoy, but fifth-round rookie Jonathan Williams has also been impressive and could move up the depth chart. Bush was not able to stay healthy last year after the 49ers signed him to play a role in their backfield.

NYG - WR Victor Cruz not ready to play

Source: NFL Network - Kimberly Jones

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (groin) will not play Saturday, Aug. 20, against the Buffalo Bills. He will continue working with a trainer Sunday, Aug. 21, and plans to practice Monday, Aug. 22 in hopes of playing against the New York Jets next week.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cruz is undraftable in redraft leagues, and the Giants legion of excellent undrafted and journeyman wide outs should make the decision of whether to keep Cruz or someone like Roger Lewis, Darius Powe, or Myles White difficult for the team.

PHI - WR Jordan Matthews should play Week 1

Source: The Philadelphia Inquirer - Jeff McLane

Philadelphia Eagles WR Jordan Matthews (knee) should be ready for the start of the regular season, according to head coach Doug Pederson. Matthews is considered day-to-day, but Pederson is not sure if Matthews will practice this week.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Matthews' running mates on the outside are still up in the air, with 2015 first-rounder Nelson Agholor still likely to get a spot by default. Matthews should be a high volume play over the course of the year, but he had a long stretch of poor games last season in a similar situation.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Seventh-round rookie Dwayne Washington's size/speed combination seems to have put him ahead of Ridley, who hasn't been the same since tearing up his knee is 2014. Zach Zenner is still in line to be the "big back" mixed in with Theo Riddick and Ameer Abdullah.

Denver Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman is expected to play on some special teams units during the preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers Saturday, Aug. 20, because he is competing for a spot on the 53-man roster.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

San Diego Chargers WR Travis Benjamin caught one pass for 11 yards in the preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals Friday, Aug. 19.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Benjamin is getting the limited work that core starters get. He's underrated as a bench wide receiver pick that you can get in the 9th-10th round. Benjamin should get plenty of targets as a deep threat in a pass-first offense.

Footballguys Update - More on the Backup Buffalo RBs

    Hi Folks,

I wanted to add some a little more detail and clarification on the Buffalo RB situation. Once again, as we cover multiple news sources in our Email Update, we had some different opinions in today's update and I wanted to give you some more context.

The big question is: Who will back up RB LeSean McCoy now that Karlos Williams is gone?

And it's a big question for a reason - there isn't much clarity for it.

Mike Gillislee is in the mix. He was being evaluated for a concussion after last night's game.

I personally lean towards Jonathan Williams. He rushed 8 times for 17 yards last night including a long run of 12 and he also scored a touchdown. He caught 2 passes for 11 yards. Most importantly, he saw this work early in the 2nd quarter after McCoy was finished. With 13:41 left in the 2nd quarter, Reggie Bush saw his first carry. He lost one yard and didn't have another carry. LeSean McCoy caught a touchdown pass from Tyrod Taylor a couple of plays later.

Jonathan Williams started seeing carries on the next series. His first rush was with 11:25 still on the clock in the 2nd quarter and he continued to work throughout the game. This tells me the team at least wanted to give him a shot to see what he could do in this backup RB role.

Clearly, as a rookie Williams has some challenges as he learns the game at this level. He was arrested in July on suspicion of DWI but ESPN's Mike Rodak said Williams will be unlikely to be suspended this year for the issue. As I sit here Sunday morning, he's the guy I think I want as the backup to McCoy.

BUT, that's just my opinion. And certainly not everyone shares that opinion. Mike Rodak who I mentioned above is a Bills Reporter and Analyst for ESPN. It's been his opinion that Reggie Bush would be the guy to see most of the work if McCoy were to miss time. He said yesterday on Twitter: "Reggie Bush has been considered favorite for No. 2 job since he signed, even before Karlos Williams release." When asked by someone on Twitter, "So if McCoy goes down, you think Bush takes on the majority of his workload?", Rodak responded simply, "Yes".

So you have that. And I, in no way think I know the Bills better than a guy like Rodak who covers them daily. What I don't know is how good Rodak is at Fantasy Football...

So what do we do with this? I think the answer is very much like most answers to these types of things - the answer and truth is likely somewhere in the middle.

With the release of Karlos Williams, it seems like the team would want veteran Reggie Bush to be around and to have a role. Relatively expensive veteran backup players are sometimes a risk to make the roster, but I think Reggie Bush makes it. I think his role will be more in the 3rd down back role and maybe special teams. But early in the season, we could see Bush work as more of the #2 RB behind McCoy as Jonathan Williams continues to learn. A month into the season, I think it's much more likely we see Williams as the backup to McCoy.

So bottom line is it's murky behind McCoy. We think it'll eventually be Jonathan Williams, maybe sooner than later. But I also want to make sure you know guys like Mike Rodak think it'll be Reggie Bush.

If it's my team, I lean toward Jonathan Williams.

Hope that clears things a little. Have a great Sunday.
