NFL Player News - Week of 7/25/16

CIN - TE Tyler Eifert's rehab on schedule Source: The Cincinnati Enquirer - Jim Owczarski

Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Eifert (ankle) is reportedly progressing as planned following right ankle surgery on May 27, according to a league source.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
As planned could easily include missing or being limited for the first two or three games of the season. Eifert's fantasy outlook isn't that different than 3rd-4th pick Jordan Reed - when healthy - but Eifert's recovery timeline has always put being 100% on Week 1 on the edge of the range of possibilities.

NE - QB Tom Brady can't work with teammates

Source: Boston Herald - Karen Guregian

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady will be prohibited from engaging in any football-related activities or discussions during the course of his four-game suspension, even if he is away from the team facility, according to NFL vice president of communications Brian McCarthy. The ban also prohibits Brady from attending games and practices as a spectator and receiving game and practice film from club personnel.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This would be more worrisome if Brady was suspended for substance abuse issues or otherwise needed to be with the team to foster unity and buy-in. He's still being drafted as a low QB1 who will produce more like an elite QB once he's back in Week 5. If rosters are big enough to accommodate another quarterback without losing too much early season waiver wire flexibility, Brady is a value pick.

PHI - QB Sam Bradford likely gone after 2016

    Source: PhillyVoice.com - Jimmy Kempski

Philadelphia Eagles QB Sam Bradford is 'extremely unlikely' to be with the team after the 2016 season has drawn to a close, according to PhillyVoice writer Jimmy Kempski.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We could see Chase Daniel at some point this year if Bradford fails. Having a lame duck quarterback is not good for a team's competitiveness, so this should be considered a rebuilding year for the Eagles. The quarterback position is unlikely to provide very much fantasy value in Philadelphia this year.

PHI - QB Carson Wentz set for heavy preseason load

    Source: PhillyVoice.com - Jimmy Kempski

Philadelphia Eagles rookie QB Carson Wentz is expected to see 'a ton' of work in the preseason, according to PhillyVoice writer Jimmy Kempski.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wentz should get a lot of work because he will be exposed to a much faster level of play than he saw at North Dakota State. It will be the best indicator of how ready he is for NFL regular season that the Eagles will get before Week 1. If the Eagles have their way, Wentz will sit all season.

NYJ - Todd Bowles confident in QB Geno Smith

Source: New York Daily News - Manish Mehta

New York Jets QB Geno Smith remains in line to start with the contract impasse between the organization and free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. Head coach Todd Bowles said he is confident in Smith as the starter. 'I think Geno can be a good starter, but he's got to prove it in training camp like everybody else,' Bowles said. 'It's not just about the quarterback position. You got to have a team around that position to play ball, but he's been in the system a year. He has a better grasp of it going into training camp and we'll see what he does.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Smith is actually a bold downfield passer, and he could mesh better with the Chan Gailey offense than he has with any of his previous offensive coordinators. If he starts for the Jets this year, it won't be as much of a blow for Eric Decker and Brandon Marshall as some might think.

DET - RB Ameer Abdullah avoids preseason PUP list

    Source: NFL.com

Detroit Lions RB Ameer Abdullah (shoulder) did not appear on the team's physically unable to perform (PUP) list, suggesting he will be a full-go for training camp following offseason shoulder surgery.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a good sign for Abdullah, who should have the opportunity to take the lead in the backfield and level off as a boom/bust RB2 in PPR leagues. In any scenario, he'll share with Theo Riddick and a back who is more proficient between the tackles.

OAK - S Karl Joseph will be ready

Source: Bay Area News Group - Jimmy Durkin

Oakland Raiders rookie SS Karl Joseph (knee) will be ready to participate in training camp, according to head coach Jack Del Rio. Joseph is expected to start opposite FS Reggie Nelson.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Raiders already have one of the best rising defensive stars in the NFL in Khalil Mack. The addition of Nelson and Bob Sanders-esque talent Joseph in the back of the defense should help them create more interceptions when Mack and company get after the quarterback.

DEN - RB Ronnie Hillman may not make team

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeff Legwold

Denver Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman could be in jeopardy of not making the final roster if he can't contribute more on special teams during training camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fourth-round pick Devontae Booker looks like the backup to CJ Anderson already, which is great news for those targeting him late in drafts. Anderson has yet to prove that he can make it through a full season as a starter, so Booker could be the back to own by the fantasy playoffs. Anderson and Booker is one of the better handcuff combinations in drafts this year.

BAL - TE Dennis Pitta cleared to practice

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Zac Jackson

Baltimore Ravens TE Dennis Pitta (hip) has been cleared to participate in the start of training camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Pitta is attempting an unlikely comeback from two hip fractures, but the Ravens would be happy to welcome back his services on a team with injury issues at wide receiver. If he is good enough to make the team, then Pitta could cost size/speed wide receiver to tight end convert Darren Waller a spot on the 53.

DET - Is Jake Rudock future in Detroit?

Source: Detroit Free Press - Carlos Monarrez

Detroit Lions QB Jake Rudock was drafted in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft, and he might be the future backup to QB Matthew Stafford with veteran QB Dan Orlovsky only signed through 2016. If Rudock sees second-team reps in training camp and the preseason, it might signal the team would prefer to keep Rudock and cut Orlovsky.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Patriots went into the season with an undrafted rookie as their backup passer the year after Tom Brady tore his ACL, so it's not unprecedented that a team would trust an unheralded rookie to man the shop if the starter goes down.

    13. DET - Last year for QB Dan Orlovsky?

Source: Detroit Free Press - Carlos Monarrez

Detroit Lions QB Dan Orlovsky remains the backup seeing second-team reps in the spring, but he is only signed through 2016 and does not have a future in Detroit. The team drafted QB Jake Rudock in the sixth round and he looked competent in minicamp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Orlovsky isn't the worst backup in the league, but he's not exactly inspiring confidence, either. The Lions have a quarterback-centric offense, and they would be in bad shape if Matthew Stafford goes down.

    Tuesday Update

CLE - WR Josh Gordon being reinstated Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon is being reinstated by the NFL conditionally, according to a source. He will be suspended for the first four games of the season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A huge win for the Browns here. The team has already stated they would welcome Gordon back with open arms. New head coach Hue Jackson is giving everyone a clean slate, and Gordon will certainly help the entire offense. He's one of the most naturally talented players at his position, but staying out of trouble and off the suspended list has been difficult during his pro career. The Browns QB situation isn't great, but Gordon should perform like a WR3 with WR1 upside for fantasy owners when he returns. He's going off the board at WR53 (11.06) right now in 12-team PPR leagues, but that should rise with this news.

HOU - DE J.J. Watt and others placed on PUP list

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Josh Alper

Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (back), OT Duane Brown (quadriceps), OT Jeff Adams (knee), S Lonnie Ballentine (knee) and CB Cleveland Wallace (undisclosed) were placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Monday, July 25.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Watt is the player to highlight here. His status for the start of the regular season is up in the air due to his recent back surgery. Recent reports indicate that Watt could miss the first month of the season.

    PIT - Le'Veon Bell: 'I won't miss games'

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell, who is appealing a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's drug policy, said 'I'm not going to miss games, trust me.' 'I'm gonna win the appeal...ppl have no idea what happened, but don't worry...let em hate,' Bell wrote directly to a fan. 'When I end up missin no games at all, ppl for sure gonna try to love me again and I'm only ridin with my LOYAL fans!!'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Let's just say we're not as optimistic as Bell in this instance. Bell is supremely talented as a runner and receiver out of the backfield. However, injuries and suspensions have kept him from consistently playing up to his potential. If suspended four games, Bell is still worth taking somewhere around a third- or fourth-round pick in your fantasy drafts. DeAngelo Williams proved last year that he could be an effective starter and a star fantasy RB as the Steelers lead back.

BUF - WR Sammy Watkins running full speed

    Source: BuffaloBills.com - Chris Brown

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (foot) said he is sprinting at 100%, and he's doing cuts, but certain things aren't at full speed. Watkins said that he's not mentally comfortable making speed cuts to the left off of his surgically repaired foot, but he expects that to be the final hurdle in his rehab. Watkins isn't sure exactly what he'll be allowed to do after he reports to camp, but he's anticipating a limited workload.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Watkins is correct to assume he'll have a limited workload. He's the centerpiece of the passing game, and the team doesn't need to risk further injury with a ton of work in camp or preseason. The Bills will have one of the most run-heavy offenses in the league, but when they go through the air it will be as much Watkins as possible. We're projecting him as a mid-range WR2 for fantasy owners in 2016.

DAL - RB Ezekiel Elliott on tap for 375 carries?

    Source: SI.com - Peter King

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott should be prepared to carry the ball around 375 times, according to SI.com's Peter King.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That would smash what Adrian Peterson (327) received last year as the only RB in the league with over 300 carries. Elliott has the ability to lead the league in rushing right out of the gate as a rookie. He's incredibly talented and running behind the league's best offensive line. The Cowboys would like Elliott to carry the offense so they can use the ground game to keep Tony Romo fresh for what they hope is a playoff run.

CLE - RB Isaiah Crowell to dominate carries?

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns RB Isaiah Crowell could reach 1,000 rushing yards this year, according to beat writer Mary Kay Cabot, and Cabot believes Crowell is going to receive a 'bulk' of the carries this season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'd agree with that assessment. Crowell is built for the larger role on the ground as he's a larger back than Duke Johnson Jr. Now, there will be a split of touches and we think Johnson is going to be the best receiving option out of the backfield. Fantasy owners should consider Crowell a RB4 in PPR leagues, while Johnson should be considered a low-end RB2 in similar leagues.

NFL - CB Antonio Cromartie may not play again

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Free-agent CB Antonio Cromartie may not play in the NFL again due to lingering concerns with his hip.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

At this time, Cromartie is insisting that his hip is not a problem and that he has no plans to retire. We'll see if the 32-year old can latch on with a team before the season starts. Perhaps injuries in training camp will get teams interested in the veteran.

NYG - TE Will Tye the favorite?

    Source: NJ.com - Dan Duggan

New York Giants TE Will Tye is the favorite to start at tight end over TE Larry Donnell, in the opinion of NJ.com's Dan Duggan. TE Matt LaCosse is also expected to compete for the starting job.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Earlier this year, reports said Tye 'caught everything' that came in his direction and 'showed remarkable consistency for a second-year player' during organized training activities and minicamps. Tye could be a sneaky TE1 this year if he wins the starting job over Larry Donnell.

OAK - OLB Aldon Smith being investigated

    Source: ESPN.com

Oakland Raiders LB Aldon Smith will be investigated by the NFL to see if he violated the protocols required of a suspended player seeking reinstatement to the league after his violation of the substance-abuse policy, according to a league source. An online video circulated that shows an unidentified man and woman talking about a hand-rolled cigarette.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Smith is currently serving a year-long suspension and will be eligible to apply for reinstatement in September.

NYJ - QB Ryan Fitzpatrick receives offers

Source: New York Daily News - Manish Mehta

Free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jets) has received multiple offers from the New York Jets. The Jets have offered a three-year, $24 million deal with $15 million guaranteed and at least one other offer.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Finally! With training camp drawing near, the two sides should be able to come to an agreement. Fitzpatrick can step in and compete for the starting job even though he's missed the entire offseason with the team. Geno Smith would be his primary competition as rookie Christian Hackenberg is seen as the team's QB of the future.

OAK - Relaxed attitude helping WR Amari Cooper

Source: San Francisco Chronicle - Vic Tafur

Oakland Raiders WR Amari Cooper has appeared more relaxed this season, and retired WR Jerry Rice said Cooper's attitude will help him avoid the drops that hurt him at times as a rookie.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cooper's drop-per-target rate of 7.9 percent ranked 3rd-worst in the league last season. Only Chris Hogan (8.5 percent) and Brandon LaFell (8.5 percent) were worse in 2015. Cooper is incredibly talented, but he does need to improve his concentration and drop fewer passes this year in order to play up to his enormous potential.

SD - RB Danny Woodhead back at full health

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Michael Gehlken

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead (ankle) said he's as healthy as he's been in a long time after suffering a scary ankle injury this offseason. The versatile running back added that he feels great heading into the 2016 season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Chargers want Melvin Gordon to be the featured back, but it could be Woodhead who emerges as the best fantasy option. Fantasy owners currently feel that way. Woodhead has a current ADP of RB20 (5.02) while Gordon is coming off the board at RB33 (7.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.

NYJ - CB Darrelle Revis hasn't tested wrist

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets CB Darrelle Revis (wrist) has yet to test his surgically repaired wrist in contact drills this offseason. His health is one of the key storylines to track once the Jets' training camp begins.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We shouldn't see much of Revis at the start of training camp. However, all reports this offseason indicate that the veteran CB is going to be ready for Week 1 of the regular season.

JAX - RB Denard Robinson in the clear?

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike DiRocco

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Denard Robinson didn't do anything wrong during his one-car crash into a retention pond earlier this month, according to general manager David Caldwell. Robinson is expected to address the media for the first time since the incident Thursday, July 28, at which time the team will have their first training camp practice.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It was a bizarre story, but it sounds like Robinson just fell asleep behind the wheel. Fantasy owners are not going to be counting on Robinson in 2016. The Jaguars added Chris Ivory in free agency, and he'll be used with T.J. Yeldon to soften up opposing defenses.

NE - Three notable Pats put on PUP list

    Source: NFL.com - Marc Sessler

New England Patriots WRs Danny Amendola (ankle, knee) and Julian Edelman (foot) and RB Dion Lewis (knee) were all placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Monday, July 25.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The PUP list to start camp is not a big deal. Any of these guys (on this team or any other team) can just activate players when they're ready.

CIN - Big year for RB Jeremy Hill?

Source: The Cincinnati Enquirer - Paul Dehner Jr.

Cincinnati Bengals RB Jeremy Hill is expected to have a 'huge year,' according to Paul Dehner Jr. of The Cincinnati Enquirer.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Huge is a relative term. Could he put up career-best numbers? Sure...but we're not counting on it. Hill suffered through a sophomore slump in 2015, and he finished the year with 330 fewer rushing yards than he did as a rookie in 2014. He had zero 100-yard games, and now he's supposed to be 'huge' in 2016? That's not logical, especially when you consider all the offensive changes on the Bengals. Hill's going to split touches with Gio Bernard, and we see him more as a RB3 or flex play.

WAS - WR Jamison Crowder to stay on the field

    Source: ESPN.com - John Keim

Washington Redskins WR Jamison Crowder will be kept on the field in three wide receiver sets, according to ESPN.com's John Keim.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Crowder does a good job of getting open on underneath routes. He's going to have to compete with rookie first-round pick Josh Doctson to stay on the field as the team's third WR. Doctson is one of the most versatile WRs in this draft class, and he could easily line up as a slot receiver. We'll see how this competition shakes out in training camp.

WAS - RB Keith Marshall no threat to RB Matt Jones

    Source: ESPN.com - John Keim

Washington Redskins rookie RB Keith Marshall is unlikely to be a threat to RB Matt Jones' workload, according to ESPN.com's John Keim.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We like Marshall in dynasty leagues, but we also realize that he needs to stay healthy and prove that he can play special teams in order to make the 53-man roster this year. Marshall was a great high school back, but a devastating knee injury in college at Georgia knocked his career off track.

WAS - Limited playing time for WR Josh Doctson?

    Source: ESPN.com - John Keim

Washington Redskins WR Josh Doctson will back up WRs DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon on the outside in his rookie season, according to ESPN.com's John Keim. Keim also said Doctson is not expected to see much work in three-wide-receiver sets.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll have to see how this shakes out. Doctson has the versatility to line up anywhere across the field--including the slot. At this time, second-year pro Jamison Crowder is penciled in to be the guy coming onto the field in three-WR sets. We'll see if Doctson can push for that job in camp.

NYJ - Todd Bowles won't be involved in offense

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles will not be heavily involved in the offense despite uncertainty at the quarterback position. 'I know what's going on and I trust Chan completely. I know the plays we run and I know what everybody is supposed to do, right or wrong. I understand busted assignments and things like that. I'm up to speed because I've been in the offense a year as well.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Gailey is one of the most experienced coaches in the game, so trusting him makes a lot of sense. We know the team is going to have a creative offense, we just don't know who the QB will be at this time. With camp looming, it sounds like the Fitzpatrick talks are heating up. Stay tuned.

    Wednesday Update

DAL - DE Randy Gregory faces longer suspension

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Dallas Cowboys DE Randy Gregory recently committed another violation of the NFL's Substance Abuse Policy. He is now facing a 10-game suspension as opposed to his original four-game punishment, according to sources. Some involved with the Cowboys are concerned Gregory may not play again.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Gregory had plenty of baggage coming out of Nebraska, and now he's in trouble again. A second-round pick in 2015, Gregory gets an additional six games of suspension with this latest infraction. We may not see the second-year player on the field much if at all this season.

GB - WR Jordy Nelson on PUP

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Tom Silverstein

Green Bay Packers WR Jordy Nelson (knee) was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Tuesday, July 26. Head coach Mike McCarthy said there are no long-term concerns with Nelson, and he's likely to be activated at some point in training camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No hurries, no worries with Nelson. The team is wise to take it easy on Nelson as he returns from this knee injury. Getting him back and healthy should be a huge boost for the Packers passing game. We've got Nelson as a WR1 in 2016. He should be one of the first 10 WRs off the board in your fantasy draft.

CIN - TE Tyler Eifert goes to PUP list

    Source: Bengals.com

Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Eifert (ankle) was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Tuesday, July 26. Eifert underwent right ankle surgery in late May.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Eifert originally injured his ankle in the Pro Bowl. He was advised that surgery was not needed until it was determined necessary in late May. His status for the start of the regular season is up in the air. We don't think he'll go on the PUP list to begin the year, but Eifert could miss the first month of the season due to this injury.

CLE - TE Gary Barnidge may be limited

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns TE Gary Barnidge (hernia) could be limited for the start of training camp after undergoing hernia surgery in June. He did pass his physical, however.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Barnidge exploded onto the scene last year, and it will be interesting to see in this new offense how productive he can be. In 2015, Barnidge finished the year as the 3rd-best fantasy TE. This year, he's getting drafted a bit lower than that as fantasy owners are weary of the Browns offense (and QB situation). Barnidge has a current ADP of TE8 (8.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.

CLE - WR Josh Gordon to start camp on NFI list

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon (quadriceps) will begin training camp on the Non-Football Injury list. He is working out on his own and is expected to miss a couple of weeks.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He was injured working out on his own, and the team should take it easy on him when he returns. Fantasy owners are looking at Gordon as a WR3 with WR1 upside provided that he stays healthy and out of trouble. Getting him back in Week 5 will provide a much-needed boost to the Browns passing attack.

KC - RB Jamaal Charles won't be limited

    Source: ESPN.com - Adam Teicher

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles' (knee) workload won't be limited if he's healthy and returns to the player he was before his knee injury, according to beat writer Adam Teicher.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Good news for the Chiefs here. Charles will be the lead back for the Chiefs once again this year, but expect the team to use backup Charcandrick West as some sort of change-of-pace back. We like Charles as a top-10 fantasy RB this year, and West could perform like a RB4/flex option so long as Charles is healthy.

CIN - No preseason for OLB Vontaze Burfict

Source: The Cincinnati Enquirer - Paul Dehner Jr.

Cincinnati Bengals LB Vontaze Burfict (knee) will not play in the preseason, according to head coach Marvin Lewis. Burfict will serve a three-game suspension to start the 2016 regular season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Bengals are only trying to keep Burfict healthy through camp and the preseason. He's been able to be a tackling machine for the Bengals during his pro career, but Burfict does have a problem of getting banged up too often. Limiting his workload in August is a good call.

Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson is likely in his final year with the Vikings as his salary hikes to $18 million in 2017, and QB Teddy Bridgewater is due for a large salary increase, according to beat writer Charley Walters.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We could see this as Peterson's final year with the Vikings, but he's still got plenty left in the tank. The Vikings should ride the veteran back as much as possible in 2016, but they could transition to more of a Bridgewater/passing heavy offense for the future. Peterson may not get 327 carries like he did last year, but getting around 300 sounds about right. He's still a top-5 fantasy RB in 2016.

KC - OLB Justin Houston may miss games Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs LB Justin Houston (knee) is expected to miss some time at the start of the regular season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Zero surprise here. Houston will not participate in training camp as he is still recovering from offseason knee surgery. While he may not begin the regular season on the PUP list, we could see Houston shut down for at least a couple of games to start the year. We'll know more about his progress as we get through the preseason.

NFL - WR Devin Hester not retiring

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Free-agent WR Devin Hester (Falcons) does not plan to retire from the NFL after being released by the Atlanta Falcons Tuesday, July 26.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We can't imagine the phone lines burning up to get in touch with Hester. At this point in his career, Hester will only contribute as a return man. The new rules for kickoffs have almost completely negated a player like him.

Jets will be lucky to finish 8-8, don't understand the excitement for a mediocre at best Qb who cost the Jets the playoffs in final game against Buffalo. Brandon Marshall made him look better than he really is last season.

    Thursday Update

NYJ - QB Ryan Fitzpatrick returning to New York Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jets) agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the New York Jets Wednesday, July 27, worth $12 million. Fitzpatrick can earn an additional $3 million based on the team's performance.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Finally! The drama between Fitzpatrick and the Jets is finally done...and it's for a price tag that we've been expecting for quite some time. Fitzpatrick saw all the money thrown around to guys like Sam Bradford (Eagles) and Brock Osweiler (Texans) earlier this offseason and wanted a piece of that. He didn't get it..and never was going to get it. Now, he gets $12 million fully guaranteed with a chance to earn another $3 million in incentives. Fantasy owners should consider him a low-end QB2.

CAR - WR Kelvin Benjamin ready to practice

Source: Charlotte Observer - Joseph Person

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) has been cleared to participate in practice, but head coach Ron Rivera said Benjamin likely will be eased back into practice.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Benjamin is a low-end WR2 for fantasy owners, but make sure to monitor that ADP as we get closer to draft time. His draft position has been getting a bit higher as of late, so make sure he doesn't get taken too soon in your draft. The Panthers are going to target him early and often, but TE Greg Olsen will get his and second-year WR Devin Funchess could also be more involved.

PIT - WR Antonio Brown won't hold out

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown will report to training camp Thursday, July 28, despite displeasure with his contract. Brown is hopeful his contract situation will be addressed before the start of the season. He has $6.25 million and $8.71 million salaries the next two seasons.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brown is arguably the best WR in the game, and he's getting seriously underpaid. His $8.3 million average annual salary ranks 19th in the NFL. Simply put, the Steelers have to change this. However, with two years left on his deal there's no rush to get something done. With a player like Brown, you should make an exception. We'll see if the Steelers do the right thing and properly compensate their superstar WR.

BAL - WR Mike Wallace fails conditioning test

Source: The Baltimore Sun - Jeff Zrebiec

Baltimore Ravens WR Mike Wallace failed his conditioning test Wednesday, July 27. He will be able to take the test again Thursday, July 28.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wallace certainly is not the same player he was when he splashed onto the scene with the Steelers. The failure of the conditioning test is a bit of a red flag, but fantasy owners shouldn't be expecting him to light up the box score anyway. We have a feeling the speedy, one-route receiver will pass the test soon enough.

CHI - RB Jeremy Langford bulks up

    Source: ESPN - Adam Caplan

Chicago Bears RB Jeremy Langford has added some weight this offseason to make sure he is ready for a bigger role in the offense in 2016, according to a source. Langford is listed at 211 but currently weighs around 220 pounds.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's good news for the Bears. With Matt Forte (Jets) moving on in free agency, the pressure is on Langford to emerge as the lead back. Watch for Kadeem Carey to put up a fight for reps in training camp. Also, fantasy owners need to get familiar with rookie Jordan Howard. He's a true power back who can make his living grinding down a defense between the tackles.

NYJ - WR Brandon Marshall sheds weight

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets WR Brandon Marshall arrived at camp Wednesday, July 27, at 224.8 pounds, which is 10 pounds lighter than he was last season. Six weeks ago, he weighed 244 pounds, and he was instructed to get under 230 pounds.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Dropping some weight is nothing but a good thing for Marshall. He's a WR1 for fantasy owners because we know (regardless of the QB) that Marshall is going to get peppered with passes. Marshall has a current ADP of WR14 (2.11) in 12-team PPR leagues.

BAL - QB Joe Flacco will wear knee brace

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens OB Joe Flacco (knee) said he will be wearing a brace on his surgically repaired knee during practices and all of the regular season games.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Flacco is coming back from a major knee injury, so Ravens fans should be happy he's wearing a brace for added protection. He can scramble, but that's not a major part of his game so we don't think the brace will be a problem for Flacco.

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Los Angeles Rams QB Nick Foles was released Wednesday, July 27.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Things aren't going your way when you get benched for Case Keenum as Foles experienced last year. When the Rams added QB Jared Goff with the first-overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft, the writing was on the wall that they were done with Foles. Some team should be interested in bringing him on as a backup.

DEN - Denver QBs to receive equal reps

Source: The Denver Post - Nicki Jhabvala

Denver Broncos QBs Mark Sanchez, Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch will receive equal snaps at the start of training camp, according to head coach Gary Kubiak. Kubiak said there is no timetable on selecting a starting quarterback.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The number of reps are going to be equal, but Kubiak admitted that Mark Sanchez and Trevor Siemian will split first-team reps. Lynch is the future, but he may need a redshirt year after coming out of a spread system in college at Memphis. He was the best QB in this draft class in terms of making plays under pressure. His completion percentage (67.9), TDs (11) and INTs (1) ranked first for FBS QBs under duress in 2015.

KC - RB Jamaal Charles placed on PUP

Source: The Topeka Capital-Journal - Herbie Teope

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Wednesday, July 27.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Charles is going to get eased into action. This gives more opportunity for talented backups Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West. Reports indicate that Ware will actually be the backup to Charles. However, we've also heard that West is going to play a role in this offense--even with Charles healthy and starting. Stay dialed into this situation as camp/preseason rolls on.

BUF - RB Karlos Williams not a lock to make team

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Rodak

Buffalo Bills RB Karlos Williams isn't considered a lock to make the team, according to beat writer Mike Rodak.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Things change pretty quickly around here. The Bills have a talented group of RBs behind starter LeSean McCoy. Karlos Williams was supposed to be the primary backup, but he's overweight and suspended four games to start the season. We like rookie Jonathan Williams as a RB who could shine with a larger role. He may be the player that wins the job behind McCoy.

GB - RB Eddie Lacy still rather heavy

Source: USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin - Pete Dougherty

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy was a bit slimmer on the first day of training camp Tuesday, July 26, then he was for organized team activities (OTAs). He went back to P90X trainer Tony Horton for a second time this offseason, getting down to an estimated 240 pounds according to beat writer Pete Dougherty.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Getting down to 240 pounds isn't quite enough to categorize him as slim. The 'fat Eddie Lacy' watch is on since training camp has started. It's not just his weight, it's his stamina. If he can play at 240 pounds and be as effective in the fourth quarter as he is the first quarter, his weight is just a number. He's a big back...always has been, and likely always will be.

DEN - Denver working on WR Emmanuel Sanders deal

Source: The Denver Post - Nicki Jhabvala

Denver Broncos WR Emmanuel Sanders' representatives are still talking with the Broncos about a contract extension. General manager John Elway said he would like to reach an agreement with Sanders but is not sure what will happen.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sanders may be seeking a deal that pays him around $10 million annually. He's certainly worth that price tag, but Denver is already paying WR Demaryius Thomas an average of $14 million per year. The offense is going to be run-heavy by nature, so it's a bit of a question mark as to whether or not they should pay their No.2 WR that kind of money. We think they should, but we're not signing the checks.

TB - WR Mike Evans working on injury prevention

Source: The Tampa Tribune - Roy Cummings

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Mike Evans said Wednesday, July 27, he's doing a lot more preventative maintenance to reduce hamstring issues.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Evans needs to stay healthy and cut down on the drops this year. He suffered through a sophomore slump in 2015, but we are expecting him to bounce back in 2016. Having a larger red-zone presence would make fantasy owners happy too.

GB - No timetable for WR Ty Montgomery

Source: USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin - Ryan Wood

Green Bay Packers WR Ty Montgomery (ankle) said he does not have a definite timetable for his return to practice but does say that his ankle feels great. Montgomery will have to compete for a roster spot when he is activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A high-ankle sprain knocked Montgomery's rookie season off track last year. This season, Montgomery is in the mix for the Packers No.3 WR job behind Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb. Jeff Janis, Davante Adams and Jared Abbrederis are all vying for the position as well. This injury puts Montgomery behind those others at this time.

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (elbow) received positive results from his bone scan, and he's on track for the season opener.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Let's hope he doesn't drop any cell phones between then and now. McFadden will serve as a backup behind rookie Ezekiel Elliott. We could see Elliott get well over 300 carries this year, so there may not be a lot of work for McFadden in 2016.

DEN - CB Aqib Talib starting camp on NFI list

Source: The Denver Post - Cameron Wolfe

Denver Broncos CB Aqib Talib (leg) was placed on the Non-Football Injury list Wednesday, July 27. Head coach Gary Kubiak said Talib should be able to return soon.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Talib suffered a gunshot wound down the back of his leg earlier this offseason, so starting camp like this should not surprise. Kubiak said the team would ease Talib back in as he continues to recover during camp.

Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith (knee) will be placed on the non-football injury list Wednesday, July 27.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Zero surprise here. Smith may miss his entire rookie season after suffering a career-threatening knee injury in Notre Dame's bowl game. We hope to see him back and healthy sometime, but don't expect that to happen until 2017.

GB - No timetable for TE Jared Cook

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Michael Cohen

Green Bay Packers TE Jared Cook (foot) does not have a timetable for a return from foot surgery, although a league source said Tuesday, July 26, that he might be on track to return by the second week of preseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
This is the first 'soft' timetable we've heard about for Cook. His status for the start of the regular season is up in the air, but if he can be back for one of their preseason games that should help. Cook is incredibly gifted as an athlete, but he's never been able to produce at a high level in the pros. With the Packers offense, Cook could finally play like he's capable of...if he's healthy.

NYG - Betting against WR Victor Cruz?

Source: New York Daily News - Ralph Vacchiano

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (knee) continues to make his way back from the serious knee injury he suffered in the 2014 season. While he might make it back through training camp and be healthy enough to play in the regular season, beat writer Ralph Vacchiano doesn't believe Cruz will post more than 50 receptions.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We all should be fans of Cruz, and millions of football fans can't wait to see him salsa-dancing in the end zone again. However, the major injuries he's coming back from will likely rob him of the ability he once had. We'd like to see him catch more than 50 passes in 2016, but we're not counting on it.

NYG - JPP can still be productive

Source: New York Daily News - Ralph Vacchiano
New York Giants DE Jason Pierre-Paul might not reach the 12.5 sack level he posted in 2014 after back surgery and before his fireworks accident, but beat writer Ralph Vacchiano still believes Pierre-Paul will have a big impact on the team's defense and pass rush, especially with DE Olivier Vernon working on the other side.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
It's not out of the question to think Pierre-Paul may be able to post double-digit sacks this year. He's had plenty of time to get used to playing with his hand, and now he'll primarily play on the left side (after spending most of his career rushing from the right).

    Friday Update

ATL - WR Julio Jones limps off Source: ESPN.com - Vaughn McClure

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones (undisclosed) left practice hobbled Thursday, July 28, and is flexing his legs on the sideline.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Well, let's not fire up the Apocalypse Alarm yet. It doesn't look serious right now and there is a long way to go before Week 1. We still expect him to be a great WR1 option for Fantasy GMs.

ATL - WR Julio Jones will practice Friday

    Source: ESPN.com - Vaughn McClure

Updating a previous report, Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones (undisclosed) will return to practice Friday, July 29, but head coach Dan Quinn would not disclose the nature of Jones' injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We still expect him to be a solid WR1, but would love a little more info on the issue. Until we get it, we have to just keep the upside in mind and see what he does in practices in the coming weeks.

CHI - OLB Leonard Floyd carted off

Chicago Bears LB Leonard Floyd (undisclosed) was carted off the field Thursday, July 28, with an undisclosed injury. An update is expected after practice.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The good news is, reports say it was illness related, not a major injury. "He was sick," coach John Fox told Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune. "He couldn't make it through. ... He's been sick the last couple days." We hope this really is the case and he'll be back when he feels better.

NYJ - RB Matt Forte dealing with injury

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

Updating a previous report, New York Jets RB Matt Forte (hamstring) did not practice Thursday, July 28, because of a hamstring injury. Head coach Todd Bowles said Forte is considered day-to-day at this point.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're not terribly worried and would rather have him shut down for a bit than for him to battle through and have more lasting damage. Forte should take a little hit to his carries and overall numbers but should still be a solid RB2, with RB1 upside in PPR leagues, though his targets will probably drop a little.

BAL - RB Kenneth Dixon day-to-day

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Updating previous reports, Baltimore Ravens RB Kenneth Dixon (knee) is considered day-to-day because of his medial collateral ligament sprain. Head coach John Harbaugh said Dixon could return to practice as early as Friday, July 29.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He already had a lot of work to do in order to get a significant piece of the carries away from Justin Forsett, who is still considered the starter. His durability was a pre-draft concern, so this will just reinforce that. We think he looks like an RB5 or so right now, but every snap he misses sets him further back.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cruz has looked good this spring and early summer but we are leery of getting too excited before he gets tackled for the first time. We have him ranked as a WR7 right now, though he has upside. We just don't know how close to the old Cruz he will be.

CLE - RG3 not being handed starting job

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III won't be handed the starting job, although all signs point to him winning the gig. 'No, it's still a ways away in my mind, but I feel good about where we are and I feel good about the process that we've been in for those guys,' head coach Hue Jackson said. Griffin is trying to beat out veteran QB Josh McCown, as well as journeyman QB Austin Davis and rookie QB Cody Kessler.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Of course he's not being handed the job, the Footballguys update writer said sarcastically. Certainly he should see stiff competition from such renowned signal callers as Josh McCown, Austin Davis and rookie Cody Kessler, he wrote while rolling his eyes so hard they fell out of his head. Joking aside, if Griffin can't win the job and loses to this group of lovable mutts, he should consider another job. Griffin should be the QB1 in camp though no better than a QB3 on your fantasy roster.

CLE - QB Josh McCown was steady in spring

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown looked more ready in spring practices than QB Robert Griffin III, and he knows the offensive line well while having a rapport and timing down with some of the receivers. McCown posted a 93.3 quarterback rating in 2015, 14th in the NFL. However, the team isn't expected to build around a quarterback who is 37. He might be kept around as an insurance policy in case QB Cody Kessler isn't ready.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's what he does. McCown is a slightly older version of Ryan Fitzpatrick—he has his moments, but he will fall on his face on occasion and as Cabot points out, you aren't building a franchise around him. We firmly believe Robert Griffin III will be the winner of the camp battle.

SEA - Two key Seahawks may start on PUP list

    Source: ESPN.com - Sheil Kapadia

Seattle Seahawks RB Thomas Rawls (ankle) and TE Jimmy Graham (knee) will not practice when training camp begins Saturday, July 30. Both players will be brought along slowly and could begin camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list. They are still both on track to be ready for Week 1 of the regular season, however, according to general manager John Schneider.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rawls is a bigger concern as he has a huge role to fill with Marshawn Lynch retiring. Graham was already a guy expected to be on the bench for much of camp, and hasn't been a big factor in Seattle yet anyway. Rawls has RB2 potential, but not if he can't stay healthy. Hopefully this is just lingering recovery time from his fractured ankle in December.

    Source: DetroitLions.com - Tim Twentyman

Detroit Lions RB Ameer Abdullah (shoulder) is making progress in his recovery from a shoulder injury and should be ready to practice since he was not placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Abdullah has to prove that he's more than just a change-of-pace back. Even though he's the lead back for the Lions, the team should use at least use Theo Riddick as a receiving back. Someone like Zach Zenner could also get work as the team's goal-line back. Abdullah is a high-end RB3 for fantasy owners.

BUF - WR Sammy Watkins to stay in stride with QB

Source: The Buffalo News - Jay Skurski

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (foot) said he and QB Tyrod Taylor have something planned to make up for the lost time in training camp. 'We're not going to go the whole time without doing anything,' Watkins said. 'We're going to get on the right page and make sure we stay there. It's really good that he's progressing, now I've got to progress with him.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're happy to hear this because given the potential lack of talent behind Watkins at receiver, he's going to get a lot of targets. We already thought Watkins would be a decent WR2 and this makes us feel more confident about it.

DEN - QB Nick Foles not an option in Denver

Source: NFL Network - James Palmer

Free-agent QB Nick Foles (Rams) isn't an option the Denver Broncos are interested in, according to head coach Gary Kubiak.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With the Jets re-signing Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Broncos out of the hunt, there is very little interest in Foles, at least publically. On Mike & Mike Thursday morning, Matt Hasselbeck said that he knew plenty of NFL coaches who liked Foles and might want a shot with him. It will be as a backup though, so he is unlikely to be a roster priority in fantasy.

BAL - RB Justin Forsett expects to be bell cow Source: CSNMidAtlantic.com - Clifton Brown

Baltimore Ravens RB Justin Forsett expects to hang onto the starting job and do the bulk of the work at the running back position ahead of RBs Javorius Allen, Kenneth Dixon, Lorenzo Taliaferro and Terrance West. The team also has RB Trent Richardson (knee) competing for a roster spot. While Forsett might be optimistic, he is 31 and the team is leaning toward reducing his carries.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Forsett seems to have recovered from his broken arm, but that age is a concern to some. The veteran back has low mileage on his body as he didn't start getting a large workload in the pros until a couple of years ago. As the Ravens will reduce his carries a little we expect him to be more of an RB3 than the RB2 he might be if he got 20-25 carries every game.

We still don't know what to make of Ebron, who is very talented but hasn't yet reached what we think his potential is. Consider him a TE2 right now, and don't be shocked if this is the year. Now that Stafford has no Calvin Johnson, the ball could find its way to many new and interesting places, like Ebron's hands. However, we think the addition of WR Anquan Boldin cuts into Ebron's potential the most of any receiver on the Lions roster.

ATL - TE Austin Hooper will be featured in camp

    Source: AtlantaFalcons.com - Andrew Hirsh
Atlanta Falcons TE Austin Hooper made at least three difficult catches over the middle and near the sideline Thursday, July 28.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Message! Hooper may not have a huge impact this year, but it's worth watching on a team with shaky options for Matt Ryan to throw to beyond Julio Jones. He's TE3 material (with intriguing upside) in redraft this year but should be owned in all Dynasty leagues.

KC - S Eric Berry planning lengthy holdout

Source: The Kansas City Star - Terez A. Paylor

Kansas City Chiefs SS Eric Berry appears ready to holdout through the preseason, as he is displeased with the team's inability to reach a long-term contract agreement with him this summer. Veterans are expected to report to training camp Friday, July 29, and head coach Andy Reid said Tuesday, July 26, that he has communicated with Berry via text this summer but was uncertain of Berry's plans.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Veteran skip camp, so this is no worry. Berry knows the defense, he's likely in great shape and he can step in during the preseason and be fine. We do think it's crazy he isn't signed to a long-term deal yet, but that may be coming. On the field, missing some practices won't hurt the savvy veteran.

CLE - Cleveland will name starting QB soon

    Source: ESPNCleveland.com - Tony Grossi

Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson said the team will name their starting quarterback before their first preseason game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners shouldn't be holding their breath here. We think Robert Griffin III will be announced as the starter, and he's a QB3 in our eyes.

TB - WR Kenny Bell impressing early in camp

Source: The Tampa Tribune - Roy Cummings

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Kenny Bell has impressed early in camp. He caught two slant passes in practice Thursday, July 28, and outran defenders.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

As Han Solo would say (if he were an NFL coach or media pundit): "Look, good against guys in T-shirts and shorts is one thing. Good against real defenses? That's something else." He played really well last year in camp before getting hurt and missing the year. We know the team loves him because they flew him to road games even though he wasn't active. There have been some reports that are contrary to Cummings' glowing write-up so this will require a constant eye. Just a month ago people were saying he wasn't a lock to make the final roster.

PIT - Date set for Le'Veon Bell's appeal

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell's appeal for his four-game suspension is tentatively set for mid-August, according to head coach Mike Tomlin.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

So far it sounds like he will not win it, which means DeAngelo Williams will be an RB1 for the first month of the season and a critical handcuff for Bell owners the rest of the way.

PIT - TE Ladarius Green placed on PUP list

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Ed Bouchette

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Ladarius Green (ankle) was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Thursday, July 28.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Green has so much talent but his constant injuries hold him back. We think he has the ability to be a TE1, but this setback is a concern so at best he's a TE1/TE2 and someone we now have to watch in camp.

ATL - WR Mohamed Sanu in tune with Matt Ryan

    Source: AtlantaFalcons.com - Andrew Hirsh

Atlanta Falcons WR Mohamed Sanu and QB Matt Ryan showed excellent chemistry Thursday, July 28. Ryan hit Sanu in stride and connected with the receiver on a number of timing throws where Sanu ran crisp routes.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sanu is a great practice player who sometimes can figure it out on the field as well, but often doesn't. He'll have an excellent chance to burn defenses across from Julio Jones, but we just don't trust him and see him as a WR5/WR6 this season.

ATL - RB Tevin Coleman utilized in passing game

    Source: AtlantaFalcons.com - Andrew Hirsh

Atlanta Falcons RB Tevin Coleman ran a number of passing route during 11-on-11 drills Thursday, July 28.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Coleman was banged up last season but seems healthy now. Devonta Freeman will be the main back here, but Coleman may see more work on passing downs than last year. He's still no more than an RB5 or solid handcuff to Freeman.

WAS - WR Josh Doctson shut down until healthy

    Source: Redskins.com

Updating a previous report, Washington Redskins WR Josh Doctson (Achilles') will be shut down until he is '100% healthy,' according to head coach Jay Gruden. Gruden noted the team was not satisfied with how Doctson's Achilles' was progressing.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We can scratch him off your redraft lists as he will miss a lot of vital and critical prep-time. We expect Pierre Garcon to get a bump from the WR5 position we have him in, while DeSean Jackson should remain a WR3/WR4. We still love Doctson's long-term upside in dynasty leagues. Also, Jamison Crowder should remain as the team's WR3 with Doctson shut down.

BUF - QB Tyrod Taylor extension possible

Source: The Buffalo News - Vic Carucci

Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor could sign a contract extension before the season starts, according to sources. The two sides are talking relatively frequently, but nothing is considered imminent.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Basically a low-end QB2 for fantasy purposes, it would be more of an impact from a dynasty standpoint than a redraft. Taylor is the starting quarterback in Buffalo, contract or no.

JAX - CB Jalen Ramsey looking good

    Source: The Florida Times-Union - Ryan O'Halloran

Jacksonville Jaguars rookie CB Jalen Ramsey (knee) looked impressive in his first practice of training camp Thursday, July 28. He locked up receivers in press coverage and displayed good instincts, strength and explosiveness.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
If Dante Fowler Jr is back to 100% health while both Ramsey and Myles Jack stay healthy, this defense has a tremendous foundation. The Jaguars are a team which is on the upswing and should be a tough franchise to play in the next few years.

CHI - WR Alshon Jeffery mum on contract talks

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeff Dickerson

Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery did not engage in discussing his failed bid to secure a long-term contract Thursday, July 28. 'Right now I'm in the process ... I'm focusing on football,' Jeffery said. 'I'm just focused on this year. Anything else will take care of itself.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Between this and Martellus Bennett's contract issues, which led to his trade, you have the wonder if the Bears think good players just grow on trees. Jeffery is one of the best young receivers in the game, an easy WR1 in fantasy and someone we think you don't just get off the street. You'd think they would want both he and Kevin White, so we expect this to get done. Still, if he leaves at the end of his contract we think Bears fans should be a bit alarmed.

BAL - WR Mike Wallace goes to NFI list

    Source: ESPN - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens WR Mike Wallace (undisclosed) was placed on the Active/Non-Football Injury list Thursday, July 28.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Already? Self-proclaimed "better than he ever was with the Steelers" Wallace failed the conditioning test twice. He will pass it eventually but it makes us feel even more confident in our assessment of him as a WR6. Wallace just isn't someone anyone—Ravens included—can depend on.

BAL - QB Joe Flacco happy with practice

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco (knee) said he felt comfortable during practice Thursday, July 28, but wishes he was able to complete more passes. He did not try to run during practice but did move around the pocket. It is not known if he will receive any playing time in the first preseason game or if the team will hold him out until the third preseason game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

As Flacco is coming off an injury, the Ravens may take it easy with him, so we might not see him do much before Week 1. We're not sure how well he'll play and the receiving options around him are middling, so right now we see him as a low-end QB2 with upside, but we could see him rise up the rankings as his reps get more numerous and we see how healthy he is.

    Saturday Update

MIA - RB Arian Foster to PUP Source: Sun-Sentinel - Omar Kelly
Miami Dolphins RB Arian Foster (Achilles') was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Friday, July 29.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is not a huge surprise, considering Foster is coming back from a torn achilles, but it is a reminder that a return to the player he was pre-injury is not a given. He needs to avoid soft tissue injuries in his reconditioning to have a chance to win the starting spot. As a veteran, he could be given a little slack if he misses a lot of practice or the preseason, but his ability to get back on the field as quickly as possible this summer will be the best indicator of his ability to stay healthy this year. Recent history still points to Jay Ajayi having significant value at some point this year.

GB - RB Eddie Lacy accelerating

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Michael Cohen

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy has been finishing runs and showing the acceleration he had early in his career, according to running backs coach Ben Sirmans.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lacy should still be held below the level of an RB1 workload with James Starks still playing a high level, but he will get enough touches in a good offense to justify his third-round price. After being considered a "safe" first-round pick last year, Lacy's risk factor in the third is going down.

BAL - WR Steve Smith's injury was more severe

    Source: BleacherReport.com - Dan Pompei

Updating previous reports, Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith (Achilles') suffered a double rupture of his Achilles' last season, which surgeon, Robert Anderson, said was the first one he had ever seen.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Smith has been defying physics and logic for his entire career, but this sounds like a real cap on his upside this season, and his ability to be on the field for Week 1. The more we learn about the Ravens wide receiver corps this season, the more we like Kamar Aiken.

CAR - WR Kelvin Benjamin close to 100%

Source: The Associated Press - Steve Reed

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) is close to top form, head coach Ron Rivera said Saturday, July 30, and wide receivers coach Ricky Proehl said he has been impressed by Benjamin's ability to make contested catches.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Looks like the torn ACL is not a factor, so Benjamin should be prime for a great WR2 kind of season. The offense struggled at times without him, so expect Cam Newton to use him early and often.

ATL - WR Julio Jones will be fully back soon

    Source: AtlantaFalcons.com - Andrew Hirsh

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones (undisclosed) will be a full participant in practice 'in the next day or so,' according to head coach Dan Quinn. Quinn decided to sit Jones out during team drills Friday, July 29.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This matches the earlier reports to not be worried about Jones leaving practice earlier this week. As long as whatever this is/was doesn't recur, we won't be moving Jones from the top 3 of our wide receiver board and top 5 of our overall board.

BUF - RB LeSean McCoy in good shape

    Source: WKBW.com - Joe Buscaglia

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy reported to training camp at 210 pounds, which is the lightest he has been in years.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We generally like for running backs to maintain their weight, but if they are going to change, lighter is better than heavier for maintenance of speed and agility. Hopefully McCoy can have a healthier 2016 than 2015. If so, he'll be a value in as a third round pick.

MIN - RB Adrian Peterson recovering from minor injury

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune - Matt Vensel

Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson (undisclosed) was held out of selected team drills Friday, July 29, because he is recovering from an undisclosed offseason injury, according to head coach Mike Zimmer. However, he performed the conditioning test and participated in running light sprints from sideline to sideline before eventually receiving a handful of carries near the end of team drills.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hopefully this is as minor as the Vikings are making it sound. They have characterized it as a "tweak". We always have to be more cautious with running backs over 30, even those that play at a Hall of Fame level. Jerick McKinnon could be an important player this year if Peterson breaks down, and he did in 2013 by the end of the season.

CLE - Robert Griffin works with starters

Source: Akron Beacon Journal - Nate Ulrich

Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III received all of the snaps with the first-team offense during practice Friday, July 29. QB Josh McCown worked with the second-team offense during practice.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Griffin is clearly going to be the starting quarterback for the Browns even if the team isn't coming out and saying it. He's worth a pick in deeper leagues and 2QB leagues, but Griffin could go undrafted in typical redraft leagues. Hue Jackson could help turn his career around, but we want to see some affirmative signs of that before we invest in Griffin. Obviously the stock of players like Gary Barnidge, Corey Coleman, Duke Johnson, and Josh Gordon depend a bit on Griffin, but if he falters, McCown might be the best backup in the league right now.

NYG - WR Sterling Shepard the No. 2 receiver

    Source: ESPN.com - Jordan Raanan

New York Giants WR Sterling Shepard ran with the first-team offense Friday, July 29, and was also on the field during plays with just two wide receivers.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Victor Cruz's return to practice is a feel good story, but unless he really got back to his pre-injury form, Shepard should be entrenched as the #2 receiver. Cruz would be the first player to get back to a high level after that injury if he can pull it off.

DET - WR Anquan Boldin working out of the slot

    Source: ESPN.com - Michael Rothstein

Detroit Lions WR Anquan Boldin spent a lot of time with the first-team offense with most of his repetitions as the slot receiver Friday, July 29.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is not great for Eric Ebron, as the two of them would be competing for targets in the middle of the field. T.J. Jones was set up to have the lead for the slot job with less imposing veterans like Jeremy Kerley, Andre Roberts, and Bubba Caldwell as competition, but his road to relevance in deep dynasty leagues is rougher now.

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (knee, calf) is practicing Friday, July 29.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is the best news we could have hoped for, as Cruz attempts to comeback from a 2014 patellar tendon tear. Even if he makes the team, Cruz will be the #3 wide receiver at best. We hope that he can recover to the level of having fantasy value again, but it would be a major surprise. Second-round pick Sterling Shepard is the complement to Odell Beckham to target in drafts this year.

San Diego Chargers DE Joey Bosa will not report to camp Friday, July 29, amid a contract dispute.

First-round holdouts appeared to be a thing of the past under the new CBA, but Bosa and the Chargers apparently have a dispute over offset language and the timing of bonus payments. This shouldn't last long with how much the Chargers need Bosa to make an impact this year.

IND - Indianapolis using three receiver sets

Source: The Indianapolis Star - Stephen Holder

Indianapolis Colts WR T.Y. Hilton, WR Donte Moncrief and WR Phillip Dorsett have been part of the three-receiver lineup implemented by offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski in the first two days of training camp. Under former offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton, Indianapolis primarily used two-tight end sets.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We like Moncrief to play a little more consistently as a WR3, with Dorsett a WR6. Of course, TY Hilton is the WR2 gem of the bunch. All of this only matters if Andrew Luck bounces back from a terrible - and injury filled - 2015.

Buffalo Bills RB Karlos Williams was placed on the Non-Football Illness list Friday, July 29.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Williams needs to get in game shape, stat, and then impress the coaches to secure his roster spot in the wake of a four-game suspension to open the season. A report from Bleacher Report's Jason Cole puts McFadden on track to return Week 1, but we know how McFadden can turn a routine re-conditioning post-injury into an extended absence. At least this is not a leg injury. We would be hesitant to draft McFadden unless it starts to look like Ezekiel Elliott is in danger of a suspension from a recent domestic violence accusation.

    Bell's knee injury recovery suddenly lost its place as the main drag on his value going into the season when he was suspended for four games. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If they don't, they will have to release fourth-round pick from 2015 Bryce Petty or Geno Smith. The Jets could shop Smith for a late-round pick if they are planning on releasing him or otherwise have a roster crunch and need to free up a spot.

CIN - TE Tyler Eifert to shed boot soon

    Source: ESPN.com - Coley Harvey

Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Eifert (ankle) is expected to have the walking boot on his surgically repaired ankle removed at some point next week. He will test his ankle with mobility and other range-of-motion exercises when the boot is removed. Eifert said his rehab is going well but does not have a timetable for his return.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Eifert playing Week 1 is still a longshot, and it's possible that he'll miss multiple games. The Bengals will take it slow with his recovery. If you take Eifert as your TE1, you'll need to take a strong TE2 to cover him, including possible setbacks.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Edelman was a PPR WR1 last year before going down, but he is falling to WR2 range in the late third in early drafts this year. If he can get back on the field early in camp, it will be a good sign. The Patriots trading for Martellus Bennett could make this primarily a two tight end attack, so Edelman might not be as central to the red zone pass offense as he was last year.

PHI - RB Ryan Mathews expected back next week

Source: The Philadelphia Inquirer - Jeff McLane

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) is expected to begin practicing next week, according to head coach Doug Pederson.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is the best news we could have hoped for, but the specter of Mathews' injury-ridden past has been raised. He was very efficient last year on a limited workload, but if the Eagles plan on using him like a feature back, history points to missed games and lots of time on the injury report. Mathews' potential reward makes him worth a pick in the 6th or 7th, but Darren Sproles will play a large role in any scenario, and we have been reminded of Mathews' main risk.

DEN - QB Mark Sanchez benched at practice

    Source: 9News.com - Mike Klis

Denver Broncos QB Mark Sanchez was benched after throwing an interception at practice Friday, July 29, and was replaced by QB Trevor Siemian, who led the first-team offense for the remainder of practice. Head coach Gary Kubiak said after practice he expects Sanchez and Siemian to receive an equal amount of reps over the next couple of weeks.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team is treating Sanchez like he is not guaranteed to start, but turning to 2015 seventh-round pick Trevor Siemian is not a great fallback position. Most reports say first-round pick Paxton Lynch is not ready. While this team won a Super Bowl with Peyton Manning playing like a dead man walking last year, it still can get worse for this passing game and offense.

Gresham turned down 12 million guaranteed from the Bears to take one million from the Cardinals. If he has an injury that cuts into his camp time, it could help 2014 second round pick Troy NIklas have a better chance of hanging onto a roster spot.

    NO - RB C.J. Spiller's reps limited

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Triplett

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller had his repetitions reduced in practice Friday, July 29, which head coach Sean Payton said they will do with several veterans in training camp.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Spiller's roster spot is not assured and even if he does make the team, his role will obviously be limited if the team doesn't trust him to stay healthy with full participation in camp while he's not nursing an injury. If it is concentrated in the passing game a la Darren Sproles, Spiller could still matter in fantasy leagues, but we'll believe it when we see it. He'll go down as one of the biggest teases in recent fantasy football history.

DAL - TE Gavin Escobar avoids PUP

    Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer

Dallas Cowboys TE Gavin Escobar (Achilles') was not placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Friday, July 29.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is a good sign for Escobar's ability to get back to his pre-injury form, although that form was far from justifying the second-round pick the Cowboys spent on him in 2013. James Hanna is on the PUP to open camp, so Escobar surprisingly is the one with a leg up here in the quest to be the #2 tight end.

BAL - WR Mike Wallace passes conditioning test

Source: The Baltimore Sun - Jeff Zrebiec

Baltimore Ravens WR Mike Wallace passed his conditioning test Friday, July 29, and he is taking part in practice.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wallace's failed test looks like a mere blip now, but it is still a warning that he is not the player he used to be. The Ravens might have overreached paying him 4.5 million dollars guaranteed. He still has late round sleeper value if Breshad Perriman looks like he won't be ready for the beginning of the season.

NO - QB Drew Brees sticking to contract deadline

Source: The New Orleans Times-Picayune - Josh Katzenstein

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees said during training camp Thursday, July 28, he is sticking to his Week 1 contract extension deadline. 'My mind will be on the preparation, week to week, on the next opponent,' Brees said. 'If there's (a deal) to be done, it's between now and the season.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brees is 37, so the Saints might not be eager to pay him the going rate of at least 15-20 million a year for a top-end starting quarterback or guarantee money in future years, but the quarterback market is empty, so they may not have a choice. The development of 2015 third-round pick Garrett Grayson this summer could be a key variable in these negotiations. Obviously, owners of Brees and any Saints skill player in dynasty leagues want this to get done.

    58. JAX - RB T.J. Yeldon out of practice

    Source: Jaguars.com - John Oehser

Jacksonville Jaguars RB T.J. Yeldon (ankle) is out of practice Friday, July 29.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No reason to overreact to this news which appears to be related to a cleat issue, but if Yeldon's health continues to be an issue well into August, it could give Chris Ivory an edge for early season touches in a backfield that most expect to be split near 50/50.

    60. MIA - Laremy Tunsil moves around

Source: The Miami Herald - Armando Salguero

Miami Dolphins OT Laremy Tunsil worked with the second-team offense at left tackle and left guard during practice Friday, July 29.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Tunsil will have to work his way up the depth chart. If he is just a top backup going into the season, that still likely represents a big plus for an offensive line that has had trouble keeping pressure off of Ryan Tannehill in recent years, including a left tackle, Branden Albert, that has only played in all 16 games once in his career.

    61. BAL - Jake Long not signing with Ravens

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Free-agent OT Jake Long (Falcons) declined to sign an injury waiver Friday, July 29, and will not sign with the Baltimore Ravens. Long texted ESPN saying that his knee feels great, was enthused by Dr. James Andrews' review of his knee this week, and he looks forward to playing this season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Long was poised to be a strong veteran swing tackle for a team that was starting a rookie at left tackle, and maybe even get in the mix to start at left guard, but all that is off for now. If it's just a question of the Ravens' medical staff's opinion, Long could catch on elsewhere.

I'd think Petty is the add man out, Jets may want to hold on to Smith as #2 instead of Hackenberg

    Sunday Update

HOU - WR DeAndre Hopkins not at training camp Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter and Tania Ganguli

Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins did not report to training camp because he is unhappy with his contract and the team is not willing to negotiate an extension. Hopkins can be fined $40,000 for each day of camp he misses.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A first-round pick in 2013, the Texans own his rights for the next two years as they exercised his fifth-year option earlier this offseason. During that time, Hopkins is set to make just over $9 million combined. He may not get a contract that pays him Julio Jones money ($14.2 million annually), but Hopkins could get a deal greater than what Doug Baldwin ($11 million annually) signed with Seattle about a month ago. He's serious about this holdout, and the Texans should respond quickly.

HOU - WR DeAndre Hopkins put on Reserve/DNR list

Source: USA TODAY Sports - Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz

Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins was placed on the Reserve/Did Not Report list Saturday, July 30.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Watch this Hopkins situation. He's a beat-of-a-different-drummer type of guy, and holding out with two years left on his contract is a bit unusual. The Texans have been throwing around money like they're handing out Halloween candy. We can't see them offering Hopkins more than a four-year, $50 million deal...if they even do that. They should work with their superstar WR, but he should realize that he doesn't have much leverage with two years under their control left.

LA - RB Todd Gurley to play more on third down?

    Source: TheRams.com - Myles Simmons

Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley will likely see some playing time on third downs, according to beat writer Myles Simmons, but Simmons believes RB Benny Cunningham will still see most of the snaps in third-and-long situations.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gurley could be the first pick in your draft, and that's something to be prepared for if you're targeting the talented back in the early first round. In 12-team PPR leagues, Gurley is RB1 (1.05) and he's arguably the best young RB in the league. We're excited about his potential this season.

ATL - WR Julio Jones could practice in full Sunday

    Source: The Associated Press

Updating previous reports, Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones (foot) participated in individual drills Saturday, July 30, and could receive full clearance for practice as soon as Sunday, July 31. He has been bothered by an apparent foot injury since training camp opened Thursday, July 28, and was spotted rolling his left foot over a ball on the sidelines while team drills were taking place Saturday.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good news for the Falcons here. Jones is going off the board at WR2 (1.03) in 12-team PPR leagues. The Falcons passing game is going to go through their superstar WR.

MIN - RB Adrian Peterson has hamstring injury

Source: St. Paul Pioneer Press - Chris Tomasson

Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson (hamstring) was limited in practice Saturday, July 30, due to a hamstring injury. 'Working out, like the week before (camp), he pulled the hammy a little bit,' Zimmer said. 'He can do things, he just can't turn it all the way loose. So we're just being careful with him.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's going to be an interesting season for Peterson and the Vikings. This could very well be his last year with the team, so do they use him up? Fantasy owners trust Peterson as a top-5 fantasy RB, and he's still a first-round pick. The Vikings are wise to be cautious with their superstar back as he deals with this hamstring injury. Make sure to monitor his recovery during camp.

CHI - RB Jeremy Langford struggles as receiver
Source: Chicago Tribune - Rich Campbell

Chicago Bears RB Jeremy Langford struggled beating defenders in one-on-one drills during practice Friday, July 29.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Langford is supposed to be 'the man' for the Bears this year, but we don't have a ton of confidence in his game as a featured back. This is why RBs like Kadeem Carey and rookie Jordan Howard need to be on your radar. Right now, Langford has an ADP of RB23 (5.08) in 12-team PPR leagues. We'd rather have guys like Frank Gore (RB31) or Justin Forsett (RB33) who are going well behind Langford in similar formats.

TEN - WR Andre Johnson delivers in first practice

    Source: TitansOnline.com - Jim Wyatt

Tennessee Titans WR Andre Johnson made several nice catches during his first practice Saturday, July 30, and head coach Mike Mularkey said Johnson will have a chance to compete for a starting spot.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Titans want to run the ball as much as possible. They don't have a passing game built to put up a ton of fantasy points. If Johnson continues to impress and make the 53-man roster we don't feel he's going to have much fantasy value with the Titans.

NYJ - QB Geno Smith sharp in practice

    Source: Jaguars.com - J.P. Shadrick

New York Jets QB Geno Smith worked with the second-team offense and connected on deep balls to WR Kyle S. Williams and WR Chandler Worthy during practice Friday, July 29.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll be keeping an eye on this situation, but Smith is unlikely to start for the Jets this year with Ryan Fitzpatrick back on the roster.

BAL - Mixed results for RB Terrance West

Source: The Baltimore Sun - Jeff Zrebiec

Baltimore Ravens RB Terrance West broke a few big runs during practice Friday, July 29, but he upset head coach John Harbaugh when he missed some assignments in pass protection.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
If you can't protect the QB, you're not going to play in the NFL. West is a larger RB (225 pounds) but he doesn't always run with the proper power. He'll be lucky to make the 53-man roster.

GB - WR Jeff Janis receiving high-level education

    Source: ESPN.com - Jason Wilde

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis has been a pet project of sorts for QB Aaron Rodgers early in training camp, according to quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Keep this on your mental back-burner just in case we see Janis emerge during the preseason. He's competing with guys like Davante Adams, Ty Montgomery and Jared Abbrederis to be the team's No.3 WR behind Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb.

PHI - RB Darren Sproles still has something left

Philadelphia Eagles RB Darren Sproles believes he can play two more years, according to his trainer Todd Durkin.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Sproles could be in for a larger role than some think. He's the change-of-pace back for the Eagles, and new head coach Doug Pederson needs to find a way to get Sproles the ball as much as possible. His current ADP is RB45 (10.11) in 12-team PPR leagues.

SEA - RB Thomas Rawls lands on PUP list

    Source: ESPN.com - Sheil Kapadia

Seattle Seahawks RB Thomas Rawls (ankle) was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Saturday, July 30. Head coach Pete Carroll, who told reporters Rawls is in 'great shape' and 'has not had any setbacks', also said he will reevaluate his second-year player's status in four-day segments.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That means check back in four days from now. Rawls is set to be the team's starter as Marshawn Lynch has retired. If healthy, he could perform like a RB2 with upside for the Seahawks. However, they drafted three RBs this year who could push for a role in this backfield as soon as this year. Stay tuned.

SEA - TE Jimmy Graham placed on PUP list

    Source: ESPN.com - Sheil Kapadia

Seattle Seahawks TE Jimmy Graham (knee) was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Saturday, July 30. Head coach Pete Carroll said the Seahawks will assess Graham in four-day segments, adding that he is still in great shape and has not had any setbacks.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It will be interesting to see how Graham fits in this year--if healthy. Simply put, the Seahawks were a better offense when he wasn't on the field in 2015. Graham is recovering from a November patellar tendon rupture, and his availability for the preseason or regular season is still unclear.

CLE - Cleveland wants to run the ball

Source: Elyria Chronicle-Telegram - Scott Petrak

Cleveland Browns RB Duke Johnson said head coach Hue Jackson has made it clear that the Browns will run the ball and that he wants to establish a physical mentality.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Browns QB situation isn't the greatest, so the team should want to run the ball as much as possible. We'll see if they're able to stay in games with a defense that has more than a few question marks. Johnson is coming off the board at RB21 (5.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

    Source: ESPN.com - Jordan Raanan

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (calf) is on schedule in his recovery process from a calf injury for which he missed all of last season. Cruz practiced for a second straight day Saturday, July 30, without limitations.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

More good news about Cruz here. We want to see him get back to his old self, but that's far from a guarantee. Monitor his progress as we continue through training camp.

BUF - RB Karlos Williams close to playing weight

Buffalo Bills RB Karlos Williams said he is 'not far at all' from his playing weight.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He was overweight earlier this offseason and now suspended the first four games of the year. Williams needs to do as much as possible to show that he's serious about being a pro and getting into shape does indicate that.

SD - RB Melvin Gordon avoids PUP list

    Source: ESPN.com - Eric D. Williams

San Diego Chargers RB Melvin Gordon (knee) was not placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list and appears to be a full participant at practice Saturday, July 30.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Gordon had microfracture surgery on his knee back in January, so his status for the start of camp has always been in question. It's good to see him avoid the PUP, but expect the Chargers to monitor him closely as he continues to recover from this serious injury.

PHI - WR Rueben Randle leaves practice

Philadelphia Eagles WR Rueben Randle (cramps) left practice early Saturday, July 30, because he was dealing with cramps.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Randle needs to get over these cramps and get on the field to impress ASAP. He's never been a consistent player, and we don't expect that to change now that he's with the Eagles.

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Ladarius Green (ankle) does not have a timetable for when he will be able to return to practice.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Watch out for second-year pro Jesse James while Green is out. It's going to look different without Heath Miller on the field for the Steelers this year. Green could be a nice replacement in the league's most high-powered offense...if healthy. He could be a top-10 fantasy TE in 2016, and Green has a current ADP of TE10 (9.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

DET - Mathew Stafford expects different offense

Source: Detroit Free Press - Carlos Monarrez

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford said he expects to lean on the running game a little more in 2016 with WR Calvin Johnson now retired. 'I think it'll make us different,' he said Thursday, July 28. 'It's on us to make it more dangerous. We got to go out there and make the plays.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's going to be weird not seeing WR Calvin Johnson catching passes from Stafford this year. Fantasy owners know the offense is going to flow through Stafford as their rushing attack doesn't exactly strike fear into opponents. We like Stafford as a QB2 with QB1 upside in 2016.
