NFL Player News - Week of 7/18/16

DET - Three Detroit backs competing for spots Source: DetroitLions.com - Tim Twentyman

Detroit Lions RBs Zach Zenner, George Winn and Dwayne Washington will likely be competing with each other for two final roster spots.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Zenner and Washington are the backs to watch here. As a rookie, Zenner showed plenty of power and a bit more burst than some expect. Washington is a former wide receiver who the Lions picked up as a seventh-round pick out of Washington. He's tall (6'2") and a powerful player with the long stride to eat up yards quickly in the open field.

DET - RB Stevan Ridley the favorite for No. 3

    Source: DetroitLions.com - Tim Twentyman

Detroit Lions RB Stevan Ridley seems to be the frontrunner for the No. 3 running back position behind RBs Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick, according to Tim Twentyman of detroitlions.com. Ridley would provide a change of pace from Abdullah and Riddick, but he'll still have to prove himself after missing most of the offseason with an undisclosed injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ridley has to be healthy in order to win the 'big' back job in Detroit. We like second-year pro Zach Zenner or rookie Dwayne Washington better. However, we understand that Ridley is going to get a chance to impress in camp. We'll see if he takes advantage of the opportunity.

JAX - A timeshare in the Jacksonville backfield?

    Source: The Florida Times-Union - Ryan O'Halloran

Jacksonville Jaguars RBs Chris Ivory and T.J. Yeldon could have close to an even split of playing time, in the opinion of The Florida Times-Union's Ryan O'Halloran.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners need to navigate this situation correctly. In PPR leagues, Ivory is coming off the board first--but it's close. Ivory has a current ADP of RB33 (7.11) while Yeldon's ADP is RB36 (8.06) in 12-team PPR leagues. Yeldon flashed as a rookie last year, but he wore down as the season went on and only lasted 12 games. This year, the team will use a near 50/50 split to help keep both Yeldon and Ivory fresh. We see both as RB3-caliber backs in 2016.

PIT - Pittsburgh may have two RBs in backfield

    Source: Steelers.com - Mike Prisuta

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell said he believes there will be times that he and RB DeAngelo Williams will be on the field at the same time. 'There are definitely going to be packages where me and 'D-Lo' are going to be out there at the same time,' Bell said. 'I'm ready for that.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's the smart thing to do. Williams is the backup, but he proved last year that he could still play at a high level and deserves to be on the field more than other reserve players. We still don't think that cuts too much into Bell's fantasy value, and he should easily be one of the first few players picked in every fantasy draft.

JAX - QB Blake Bortles talks with other QBs

    Source: The Florida Times-Union - Ryan O'Halloran

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles talked with Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers and Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer this offseason to see how he could improve his play.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's a good sign for the young passer. He is only entering the third season of his pro career, and the Jaguars passing game is one of the most exciting units out there for fantasy owners. Bortles threw for 4,428 yards and 35 touchdown passes a year ago, and it will be interesting to see what he does for an encore this season. Reaching out to guys like Rodgers and Palmer can only help improve his game. Bortles has put up the numbers, but being more consistent is something he can definitely work on.

NE - WR Julian Edelman feeling better

Source: Boston Herald - Chris Mason

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman (foot) said his injured foot is feeling better but is not sure when he will be cleared to practice.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Edelman has had two procedures on his foot since the last time we saw him on the field in Week 10 against the Giants. It's the Patriots, so Lord only knows when we'll actually know anything about this injury or Edleman's recovery or Edelman's availability. Keep an eye on his status as training camp goes on.

NE - First-team reps for QB Tom Brady

    Source: ESPNBoston.com - Mike Reiss

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady should still receive a good amount of first-team repetitions during training camp despite his four-game suspension. QB Jimmy Garoppolo could then take the majority of first-team reps once preseason ramps up, according to ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brady may see limited time in the preseason, but the team needs to do everything they can to get Garoppolo ready. In college at Eastern Illinois, Garoppolo showed an incredibly quick release and accuracy on passes within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage. However, he did not play well under the slightest bit of pressure. It's going to be a trial by fire for the young QB, and teams like the Patriots Week 1 opponent (the Arizona Cardinals) are going to blitz him all day and dare Garoppolo to beat them with his arm. Good luck with that.

LA - QB Nick Foles should be at camp

Source: Los Angeles Daily News - Vincent Bonsignore

Los Angeles Rams QB Nick Foles is expected to be present for training camp as the Rams wait for a quarterback vacancy or possible trade partner.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With $8 million in dead money remaining, the Rams would be unlikely to cut Foles at this point. He stayed away from the team during minicamp and OTAs, but he should report to training camp to see if the Rams can trade him. Any sort of injury on another team could open the door for Foles. He does have plenty of starting experience, but his recent film is far from impressive. Some team would have to be desperate to even offer up a late-round pick for the veteran QB.

IND - RB Frank Gore still motivated

Source: The Indianapolis Star - Stephen Holder

Indianapolis Colts RB Frank Gore uses critics to stay motivated at 33 years old. 'When I hear it, that's when I attack my training,' Gore said. 'When I'm tired, I tell myself what the people are saying about me.' Gore works out twice a day, adding football-specific field work to his usual workout involving speed, agility and strength training. Gore said working out more makes his mind stronger heading into training camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gore is one of the most consistent RBs in the NFL, and things should be no different this year. In fact, things could be better with QB Andrew Luck healthy and back in action. Plus, the Colts have an improved offensive line which should help keep Luck upright and help blast open holes for Gore. We see him as a safe RB3 with a bit of upside in 2016.

DEN - WR Emmanuel Sanders the top priority

Source: The Denver Post - Nicki Jhabvala

Denver Broncos WR Emmanuel Sanders is now the top priority for Denver after signing LB Von Miller to a long-term deal. Sanders isn't worried, though, and is staying focused on football. 'I just sit back, work out and the rest will take care of itself,' Sanders said. Sanders has also stated that he wants to play for the Broncos for a long time.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With Von Miller's contract out of the way, Sanders becomes the next Broncos player who should get a new deal. We think he'll be able to get something similar to the contracts signed by Doug Baldwin (Seahawks) and Allen Hurns (Jaguars) earlier this year. Something around four-years, $40 million sounds about right. We'll see if the two sides can get something done during camp or during the regular season before Sanders hits free agency next offseason.

CAR - No worries about ILB Luke Kuechly

Source: Charlotte Observer - Joseph Person

Carolina Panthers LB Luke Kuechly (shoulder) is 'itching' to go, according to defensive coordinator Sean McDermott, and McDermott said Kuechly knows what he needs to do to be ready for the start of the season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Zero surprise here. Kuechly underwent the surgery on his shoulder back in February, and he'll be near full strength for Week 1 of the regular season. Even though he's 'itching' to go, we have a feeling the Panthers are going to be quite cautious with their superstar LB as they go through training camp and the preseason.

NE - No deal close for three Patriots players

    Source: ESPNBoston.com - Mike Reiss

New England Patriots LB Jamie Collins, LB Dont'a Hightower and CB Malcolm Butler are all entering the final year of their contracts, but none of the players appear close to a contract extension at this point.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Patriots have some interesting decisions to make in the future. We feel Butler may be the first to get a new long-term deal, but this is the Patriots and they move in mysterious ways. If Butler is done during the year, the team could then use the franchise tag on either Collins or Hightower.

PHI - QB Carson Wentz likely to be Week 1 inactive

    Source: NFL.com - Tyler Dragon

Philadelphia Eagles rookie QB Carson Wentz is expected to be inactive for Week 1 against the Cleveland Browns, according to head coach Doug Pederson.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wentz is in for a redshirt year this season. That's a good thing for the Eagles as they can then properly develop the talented rookie. Sam Bradford was overpaid this year for a reason--to start while Wentz gets up to speed in the NFL.

CIN - OLB Dwight Freeney could be option for CIN

Source: The Cincinnati Enquirer - Paul Dehner Jr.

Free-agent DE/LB Dwight Freeney (Cardinals) could still receive interest from the Cincinnati Bengals leading up to training camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Freeney has a few spots where he can fit in, and he's already had workouts with the Bengals and the Falcons. We could see the Cardinals bringing him back, and a team like the Buccaneers might want him as a sub-package player. The market isn't white-hot for his services, but Freeney does have enough interest to find a new home--perhaps sometime before training camp. Last year, Freeney was able to snare eight sacks (his most since 2011) while only playing 245 snaps in just 11 games.

JAX - WR Rashad Greene the likely No. 3 WR

    Source: The Florida Times-Union - Ryan O'Halloran

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Rashad Greene is expected to be the No. 3 wide receiver and play in the slot again behind WRs Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns, according to Ryan O'Halloran of The Florida Times-Union.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Jaguars passing game is an exciting one for fantasy owners, and we like Greene's skill set as the team's third WR. Coming out of Florida State, Greene showed the ability to get on top of a defense in a hurry...from the outside or as a speed slot. He's got the concentration to make difficult catches near the sideline, and Greene can haul in passes over the middle knowing he's going to get hit. He's a dynasty prospect we like monitoring, and he's a player re-draft owners should keep on the waiver wire speed dial in case of an injury above him on the depth chart.

    19. MIN - WR Laquon Treadwell to go over the middle

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune - Matt Vensel
Minnesota Vikings WR Laquon Treadwell is expected to add a new element to the offense because he has the size and ability to run post routes over the middle.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Treadwell is one of our favorite rookie WRs from this draft class. A good pro comparison for him is DeAndre Hopkins (Texans) because of his body control, agility and ability to make difficult catches seem routine. The rookie could be more physical against press coverage, but he's certainly physical with the ball in his hands. In 2015, Treadwell was 4th in the FBS with 185 receiving yards after first contact. The rookie can work underneath routes while Stefon Diggs and Jarius Wright stretch the field.

    Tuesday Update

MIA - RB Arian Foster joins Miami Source: NFL.com - Marc Sessler

Free-agent RB Arian Foster (Texans) signed a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins Monday, July 18, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Clearly, we'll see soon enough how Foster is progressing. Jay Ajayi has been projected to be the RB1 here but the team has made it clear they'd like to have help. The Dolphins lost Lamar Miller this offseason and missed on C.J. Anderson who stayed with Denver. Chris Johnson was also a target of theirs before he decided to stay with the Cardinals. A healthy Foster clearly is trouble for Ajayi. Although "healthy" is an adjective we haven't used with Foster a lot in the last year. Stay tuned as we like this move for Foster and for the Dolphins.

MIA - RB Jay Ajayi still likely to start

Source: The Palm Beach Post - Andrew Abramson

Miami Dolphins RB Jay Ajayi is expected to enter training camp as the starting running back, in the opinion of The Palm Beach Post's Andrew Abramson.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're not so sure that's going to be the case, but Ajayi should get the first shot at the top job. The Dolphins have done almost everything they possibly could to add more talent to the RB position, and Ajayi will now have to beat out veteran addition Arian Foster for the starting gig. If healthy, Foster's starting experience and natural skill set would be a perfect fit for the Adam Gase offense. Watch this battle in training camp.

NYJ - QB Ryan Fitzpatrick situation could linger

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

It looks as though the New York Jets may wait to view the practice repetitions of QB Geno Smith in training camp before there is more movement in talks with free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jets), according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

COULD linger? So what has it been doing for months, sauntering slowly? We suppose it could linger longer, and practically everyone under the sun has gotten tired of the drama. With training camp approaching, it's time to you-know-what or get off the pot when it comes to the Fitzpatrick/Jets situation. We'll see if they can finally come to an agreement.

GB - RB Eddie Lacy back working out

    Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy has reunited with trainer Tony Horton, the P90X founder, this summer. Lacy spent two months with Horton earlier this year after Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said Lacy 'cannot play at the weight he was at (last) year.' Lacy was 15 to 18 pounds lighter in April. 'Eddie will be fine,' McCarthy said in May. 'I believe he'll hit the target that we're all looking for when the lights come on.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lacy is going to be rocked up this year, and his 'fat Eddie Lacy' days may be behind him. We'll see if the p90X version of Lacy is lighter and quicker as a runner. We'll also see if he has better stamina because of the lost weight. Lacy is going to be the lead back for the Packers in an explosive offense. Fantasy owners should consider him a low-end RB1 in 2016.

ARI - RB David Johnson will be featured

    Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson is the unquestioned bellcow running back for the Cardinals this year, according to Darren Urban of azcardinals.com. RBs Chris Johnson and Andre Ellington will back up like they did for most of 2015.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

David Johnson shined during his rookie season with the Cardinals. His blend of size/power/speed is one that gets any fantasy football player excited. He's a first-round pick this year and has the opportunity to finish as the best RB in fantasy football. Johnson's current ADP is RB3 (1.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

BUF - RB LeSean McCoy will be rested

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Rodak

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy will play very little in the preseason, if at all, according to ESPN.com's Mike Rodak.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Good! The team knows they're going to run the ball early and often...with McCoy as the featured back. There's no need to risk injury or wear down the seasoned veteran by overworking him in camp.

NE - New England likes QB Jimmy Garoppolo

    Source: CSNNE.com - Phil Perry

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo has earned the confidence of teammates and coaches, according to Phil Perry of CSNNE.com.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's all nice and well, but we need to see it on the field before we get too excited about Garoppolo's prospects. He's got a quick release, and Garoppolo is accurate on passes within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage. However, he's not good under pressure and seems to abandon plays/reads when under the slightest bit of duress.

BAL - QB Joe Flacco will be ready for first day

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco (knee) said he plans to be practicing on the first day of training camp Thursday, July 28.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's great news for the Ravens, but expect the team to take it easy on him as we go through camp and the preseason. In fact, it would be a bit of a surprise if we see Flacco play in the preseason given the nature of his knee injury. All signs point to Flacco being ready to go by Week 1 of the regular season.

PHI - WR Nelson Agholor won't be charged

    Source: ESPN.com

Philadelphia Eagles WR Nelson Agholor will not be charged after the Philadelphia District Attorney's office conducted an investigation into an alleged sexual assault case against the receiver. The office said in a statement that it 'lacked sufficient evidence' to charge Agholor.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The league could still hand down some discipline just for making 'the shield' look bad, but we think it's unlikely. Agholor had a disappointing rookie season, and he's looking to win the No.2 job over veteran Rueben Randle this year. A high-ankle sprain and trouble grasping the playbook held Agholor back in 2015. We'll see if he can get on track, stay healthy and produce this year.

MIN - RB Jerick McKinnon could see more snaps

    Source: 1500ESPN.com - Andrew Krammer

Minnesota Vikings RB Jerick McKinnon could see more playing time as the team looks to get more out of the passing game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We could see McKinnon playing a bit more this year, but it doesn't dampen our outlook on Adrian Peterson. McKinnon is a valuable handcuff for Peterson owners, and he can be had near the end of your draft. Peterson is a top-10 pick in most any format, and he's got the upside to finish as a top-5 fantasy RB once again in 2016.

CHI - Hot RB will be leaned on in Chicago

Source: Chicago Tribune - Rich Campbell

Updating previous reports, Chicago Bears RB Jeremy Langford, RB Ka'Deem Carey, RB Jordan Howard and RB Jacquizz Rodgers will be part of a committee in the backfield, and head coach John Fox plans to limit their workloads and ride the hot hand. The team wants Langford to run with a wider base and gain more yards after contact. Carey needs to build on his toughness and become a more complete back. Both figure to be part of the committee approach. Howard adds a bruiser skill set in short-yardage and goal line situations.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ah, the dreaded 'hot hand' approach. Fantasy owners are used to dealing with RBBCs since they are rampantly used across the league. Dealing with the 'hot hand' is entirely more frustrating. Langford should be the lead back most weeks, but if Carey is used more near the goal line he could be the more valuable fantasy back in certain matchups. Howard may be the most naturally talented runner from this draft class (right up there with Ezekiel Elliott), but he has to stay healthy and get used to the speed/discipline of the NFL before we can count on him as a valuable fantasy asset. Proceed with caution when considering Chicago's backs.

NFL - CB Charles Tillman retiring after 13 years

    Source: NFL Network

Free-agent CB Charles Tillman announced his retirement following a 13-year career with the Carolina Panthers and Chicago Bears Monday, July 18.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It will be sad to see 'Peanut' Tillman off the field in 2016. He suffered a knee injury late last year in his lone season with the Panthers, and his status for the start of the regular season this year was in question.

ARI - RB Andre Ellington could play receiver

    Source: AZCardinals.com - Darren Urban

The majority of Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington's playing time may come at wide receiver, as long as RBs David Johnson and Chris Johnson are healthy, according to azcardinals.com's Darren Urban.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ellington could easily be a slot receiver for the Cardinals. He's quick enough to break ankles in the open field, and Ellington has the speed to gain separation on linebackers or safeties. He's missed 11 games in three years with the Cardinals, but Ellington has ran 571 routes during that time--a mark good for 23rd in the league at the RB position. If David Johnson and Chris Johnson are healthy, there may not be many touches for Ellington as a rusher.

BUF - WR Sammy Watkins probable for camp

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Rodak

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (foot) is probable to participate in training camp, according to ESPN.com's Mike Rodak.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Bills are going to run the ball as much as possible. However, when they do go through the air it will be Watkins as the primary target--and for good reason. He's a big-time playmaker who can be a valuable fantasy asset in 2016. Watkins has a current ADP of WR21 (3.11) in 12-team PPR leagues.

DEN - CB Aqib Talib should be ready for camp

Source: The Denver Post - Cameron Wolfe

Updating a previous report, Denver Broncos CB Aqib Talib (leg) said he feels great and he should be ready for training camp. Talib did show a little limp, though, after shedding his crutches for the first time since his gunshot wound. The cornerback also said that he's 'running and everything.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Broncos should ease Talib back into action when camp begins. The gunshot wound cost him portions of the mandatory work this offseason.

BUF - Buffalo makes RB Reggie Bush an offer

    Source: NFL.com - Kevin Patra

Updating previous reports, the Buffalo Bills have put out an offer to free-agent RB Reggie Bush (49ers), but Bush is weighing his options and is in no rush to make a decision, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Bush played in just five games last year before suffering a season-ending knee injury.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We may see Bush find a new home before the start of training camp, and it may be with the Bills. The team has interest in adding a back due to Karlos Williams' four-game suspension and rookie Jonathan Williams arrest for DWI last week. Although we'll see how Karlos Williams' suspension plays out. If signed, Bush will compete with those two plus Mike Gillislee for the primary backup job behind LeSean McCoy.

    Wednesday Update

IND - Fewer touches for RB Frank Gore? Source: ESPN.com - Mike Wells

The Indianapolis Colts want RB Frank Gore to have a lightened workload in 2016, according to ESPN.com's Mike Wells.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is an important note for fantasy owners. We could see Gore's carries fall from the 260 he had in 2015 with the Colts. Instead, he may only get around 200 carries as the team tries to keep him fresh. We like the veteran RBs consistency and see him as a RB3 for fantasy owners in 2016.

NYJ - RB Khiry Robinson set for goal-line role?

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets RB Khiry Robinson (leg) could be utilized as a short-yardage and goal-line back this season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Robinson has determination when he runs, and the team could save some wear and tear on starter Matt Forte. Last year with the Bears, Forte had 21 carries inside the 10-yard line but was only able to score four rushing touchdowns from inside that distance. Last year for the Saints, Robinson scored the same amount of touchdowns but on only six carries from inside the 10.

BUF - WR Sammy Watkins 'right where he needs to be'

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Rodak

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (foot) doesn't know how much he'll do during training camp but said he's 'right where I need to be' after suffering a left foot injury in the offseason. The Bills report to training camp Friday, July 29.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Bills are likely to be cautious with Watkins at the start of camp as he continues to recover from the foot injury. There's no need to risk further injury to their star WR in camp or most of the preseason. When the regular season hits, expect Watkins to perform like a low-end WR2 with upside for fantasy owners.

NYJ - Long delay in QB Ryan Fitzpatrick talks

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jets) and the New York Jets have not discussed a new contract in over a month, according to ESPN.com's Jeremy Fowler.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Another day, and another 'nothing is happening' story about the Jets and Ryan Fitzpatrick. With training camp approaching, we hope something happens--anything--to get these two sides on the same page. Fitzpatrick isn't worth as much as he wants, the Jets have to come up a bit from their low-ball offer. Once Geno Smith starts throwing picks in practice, the Jets could change their tune.

TEN - RB DeMarco Murray likely to run often

    Source: TitansOnline.com - Jim Wyatt

Tennessee Titans RB DeMarco Murray is expected to be the team's workhorse in 2016.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Titans want to run the ball as much as possible with their 'exotic smashmouth' offense which features both Murray and rookie Derrick Henry. The system is a better fit for Murray than what he had with the Eagles, but fantasy owners shouldn't expect him to produce like he did when he was with the Cowboys. Instead, consider Murray a low-end RB2 with upside. Murray has a current ADP of RB20 (5.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

GB - RB John Kuhn unlikely to be re-signed
    Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky

Free-agent FB John Kuhn (Packers) appears to be in the Green Bay Packers' rearview mirror and is not expected to re-sign. FB Aaron Ripkowski is expected to take over starting fullback duties.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll miss the chants of "KUHN!!1!" from Packers fans in 2016. The fullback is a dying position in the NFL, but there's a few teams that could have interest in Kuhn under certain circumstances.

KC - RB Spencer Ware considered the backup

    Source: ESPN.com - Adam Teicher

Kansas City Chiefs RB Spencer Ware is viewed as the backup running back behind RB Jamaal Charles, according to ESPN.com's Adam Teicher. Teicher did say that Ware and RB Charcandrick West would both play if Charles was injured.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ware is a talented runner who could easily carry the load for the Chiefs if necessary. We feel West is going to play a role--at least as a change-of-pace back behind Charles. If something were to happen to Charles, Ware could take over as the lead back with West continuing his valuable part-time play.

IND - Backup running back unclear in Indy

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Wells

Indianapolis Colts RB Frank Gore is the unquestioned starter for the Colts, but his backup remains to be seen. ESPN.com's Mike Wells did mention RB Josh Ferguson first for the position, however.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ferguson is a nice sleeper rookie RB to consider. He was a good all-purpose back in college at Illinois, and our very own Cecil Lammey reported positive things about Ferguson during the week of practice for the East-West Shrine Game earlier this year. Ferguson is more quick than fast, and he doesn't waste time dancing in the backfield. He's electric with the ball in his hands, but he's not much of a bruiser. We like him as a receiver out of the backfield too. Keep his name in mind when considering backup Colts RBs. In 2015, 37.2 percent of Ferguson's carries went for five yards or more.

SEA - RB Alex Collins will compete immediately

Source: The Seattle Times - Bob Condotta

Seattle Seahawks rookie RB Alex Collins is expected to compete right away for playing time as an early-down running back, according to Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A fifth-round pick of the Seahawks this year, Collins was one of our favorite RBs in this draft class. Collins is a one-speed runner, but he's swift and can build up a head of steam. He's got the quickness to make defenders miss, and his foot frequency allows him to change direction without losing much speed. Seattle added three RBs via the 2016 NFL draft this year, and it will be interesting to see how things shake out behind Thomas Rawls.

MIA - RB Arian Foster plays well versus division

    Source: USA TODAY Fantasy Sports

Miami Dolphins RB Arian Foster has fared well against the AFC East in his career. In 10 games, Foster has totaled 12 touchdowns and averaged 105 total yards per game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cool...that's a nice bit of history but it doesn't mean Foster is going to get 100 yards and a TD every time he plays within the division. We like Foster's fit in the Adam Gase offense. The spread formations should help the veteran runner see wide rushing lanes to take advantage of. We'll have to see how the split between Foster and Jay Ajayi goes before getting too excited about either prospect.

SEA - QB Russell Wilson elite with protection

    Source: ESPN.com - Sheil Kapadia

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson led all quarterbacks in Defense-adjusted Value Over Average (DVOA) last season when he was adequately protected, according to Football Outsiders. DVOA measures efficiency by comparing success on every play to the league average based on situation and opponent. Wilson was solid under pressure, too, ranking fourth in DVOA among quarterbacks.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wilson is great when adequately protected, but he's also good when facing five or more pass-rushers. In 2015 when facing five or more pass-rushers, Wilson had 14 passing TDs and only three interceptions. The touchdown mark was 3rd-best in the league in that category.

BAL - QB Joe Flacco looks like himself

    Source: BaltimoreRavens.com - Garrett Downing

Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco (knee) is already throwing like his regular, healthy self, according to WR Kamar Aiken. Aiken said Flacco looked the same as he always has when the caught passes from him for the first time this offseason. 'He looks 100% to me,' Aiken said. Aiken added that Flacco didn’t' have any 'limp or lags' and that he was surprised Flacco looked as good as he did. 'I'm just happy to get him back.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Great news for the Ravens here. Flacco will be eased into training camp and the preseason as he continues to recover. Fantasy owners should look at Flacco as the mid-range QB2 he's always been for most of his career. Year two of the Marc Trestman offense should have a few more wrinkles for the passing attack.

CIN - WR A.J. Green feeling loose

    Source: ESPN.com - Coley Harvey

Cincinnati Bengals WR A.J. Green said his mind is at ease entering the 2016 season. 'I don't have to worry about contracts or anything like that,' Green said. 'I just go in there free, [with a] clear head, just go out there, work and have fun.'

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Bengals need Green to feel his feet in the back of the end zone. The Bengals passing game is going to be missing the likes of free-agent departures in Marvin Jones (Lions) and Mohamed Sanu (Falcons). The team will even be without TE Tyler Eifert for the first part of the year as he recovers from ankle surgery. Green is going to be the centerpiece of the passing game more than ever before.

DAL - Jaylon Smith won't be ready

Source: Fort Worth Star-Telegram - Charean Williams

Updating a previous report, Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith (knee) is still not expected to be ready for the start of the regular season despite making recent progress. 'Obviously Jaylon Smith will be one who will probably take some time, if not all the year, but we'll see how that goes,' owner Jerry Jones said. Smith is the only Cowboy not expected to be ready for the start of the season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We think it's best to shut down Smith for the year and see what he can do in 2017. The devastating knee injury he suffered in Notre Dame's bowl game earlier this year needs a lot of time to heal...and there's no guarantee that he'll ever be the same player again.

DEN - OLB DeMarcus Ware, Talib will be ready

Source: The Denver Post - Cameron Wolfe

Denver Broncos DE DeMarcus Ware (back) and CB Aqib Talib (leg) are both expected to be good to go for training camp later this month.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ware didn't practice at all this offseason during minicamp or OTAs due to his bad back. He's going to be a part-time pass-rusher this year for the Broncos with guys like Shane Ray and Shaq Barrett playing a larger role. Talib missed part of mandatory minicamp after he was a gunshot victim. The league is investigating the incident to determine whether or not Talib should be suspended. This was not his first incident with a firearm during his pro career.

BUF - QB Cardale Jones likely to be No. 3
    Source: WKBW.com - Joe Buscaglia

Buffalo Bills QB Cardale Jones is no immediate threat to unseat QB EJ Manuel as the backup for the 2016 season, according to beat writer Joe Buscaglia. Jones showed some inaccuracy and looked uncomfortable during offseason practices.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones has a rocket arm and the athleticism to keep plays alive with his feet while keeping his eyes downfield. However, he has problems with consistency and accuracy. That's why he's a developmental QB for the Bills. The raw tools are there for Jones if he can get up to speed in the NFL as a passer. Not only will he need improved accuracy, but he needs to show the ability to make quicker decisions when facing the hyper-disciplined defenses of the NFL.

    Thursday Update

TB - QB Jameis Winston drops 20 pounds Source: ESPN.com - Jenna Laine

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston has dropped 20 pounds this offseason, according to his farther, Antonor.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Winston has always been a bit bulky as a QB, and losing some of his 'happy weight' could improve his stamina. We're anxious to see if Winston takes that next step in his second year as a pro. The upside is through the roof with this guy, and we love the weapons around him in the Bucs' passing game. Winston is a low-end QB2 for fantasy owners in 2016.

MIN - WR Laquon Treadwell should fit offense

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune - Matt Vensel

Minnesota Vikings WR Laquon Treadwell should be the physical, chain-moving receiver that offensive coordinator Norv Turner has been looking for over the last few seasons. Turner was happy with Treadwell's instincts and route running during offseason workouts. Treadwell said the Vikings' offense is similar to the one he played in college, where he was asked to run short and intermediate routes.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Treadwell lacks blazing speed, but he does a good job of setting up his routes and getting open against all sorts of different coverage. His hands, body control and concentration give him the skill set to become QB Teddy Bridgewater's favorite target. The Vikings are going to feature a run-heavy offense with RB Adrian Peterson, but when they go through the air it's Treadwell who could be the primary target. We like him as a WR4 with upside for fantasy owners.

SD - San Diego to have competition for CB job

    Source: ESPN.com - Eric D. Williams

San Diego Chargers CBs Brandon Flowers and Casey Hayward will compete for one of the starting cornerback jobs during training camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's a three-corner league in today's pass-happy NFL. Flowers has plenty of experience, but he's not quite the player he used to be. Both players will receive meaningful playing time no matter who wins the competition.

DEN - RB Devontae Booker may be third-down back

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeff Legwold

Denver Broncos RB Devontae Booker could receive playing time early in the 2016 season as a third-down back because of his pass-catching ability.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Booker is a great receiving back, and we like to describe him as a three-down back in waiting. We should see C.J. Anderson carry the load on the ground, but don't be surprised if Booker gets a few looks on passing downs. Anderson is a RB2 for fantasy owners, and Booker is a valuable handcuff who should go off the board in the 10th round or so.

TEN - QB Marcus Mariota needs to hold onto ball

    Source: ESPN.com - Paul Kuharsky

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota fumbled the ball 10 times in 2015, and the team lost six of those fumbles. Mariota said his ball security was something he wanted to work on this offseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mariota is one of the most exciting young QBs in the league, but he needs to hold onto the rock. We don't see the Titans running away from any opponent, so ball-security is incredibly important as opportunities may be limited compared to others offenses. He's a low-end QB2 for fantasy owners in 2016.

PIT - TE Jesse James may see more work in camp

    Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Jesse James is expected to receive significant snaps during the early part of training camp because TE Ladarius Green (knee) likely will be eased back into practice.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Green has always been a player with production that doesn't match his potential. He's not starting out his Steelers career on a great note with this knee injury. That could open the door for James. A fifth-round pick out of Penn State last year, James is a huge target with a large wingspan. We'll see how James and Green do this year replacing the retired Heath Miller.

NYJ - DE Sheldon Richardson will not be limited

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets DE Sheldon Richardson will receive his normal snaps during training camp even though he has been suspended for the first game of the 2016 season. Richardson was limited during training camp last season and said his conditioning was an issue after he served a four-game suspension.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Richardson is one of the more disruptive players in the league at his position. With only a one-game ban, the Jets would be wise to get him up to speed with a normal amount of reps in camp.

NYJ - Two Jets RBs to compete for No. 3 job

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets RBs Zac Stacy (leg) and Khiry Robinson (leg) will compete for the No. 3 running back job during training camp, but Robinson may have an edge because the team does not believe he has reached his full potential yet.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Robinson is the player to highlight here. He's a swift runner who can build a head of steam, and Robinson has a nose for the end zone. With Matt Forte's struggles near paydirt, we could see Robinson become the goal-line back for the Jets.

NYJ - OLB Jordan Jenkins may start in 2016

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets LB Jordan Jenkins will have a good chance to start at strongside linebacker in Week 1 if he is able to handle the mental aspect of the game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's a reason why the Jets picked up Jenkins in the third round of the 2016 NFL draft. He's got a large wingspan and the ability to put opposing QBs under duress often. Adding Jenkins only enhances the team's already-strong front seven.

ARI - DE Calais Campbell may receive extension

    Source: AZCardinals.com - Kyle Odegard

Arizona Cardinals DE Calais Campbell is a player that the Cardinals would like to sign to a contract extension. General manager Steve Keim said there is no timetable for a possible extension for Campbell.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Cardinals don't have much cap room to work with, but investing in Campbell would be a wise move. The team is likely to deal with FS Tyrann Mathieu first, then we'll see if Campbell can get a new big-money deal.

NYJ - Important year for TE Jace Amaro

    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets TE Jace Amaro is the projected starter for the Jets after he missed all of last year with a shoulder injury. He has worked hard on his blocking and believes he's improved in that area. However, he must earn the trust of offensive coordinator Chan Gailey and head coach Todd Bowles. The Jets tight ends combined for just eight catches on 23 targets in 2015.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Amaro seems to be in another make-or-break year. He's physically talented, but that potential has never translated to production in the NFL. We can't imagine he gets more than 30 or so catches this year if he stays healthy. There's just not much there with Amaro.

NYJ - DE Muhammad Wilkerson will be ready

    Source: The Associated Press

New York Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson (leg) said he will be ready for the season opener but can't predict when he'll be available in training camp. He is recovering from a broken right leg suffered in the season finale in 2015.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's good news for Wilkerson, but we don't think the Jets will have him do much in the preseason. Monitor his status leading up to the regular season. With Wilkerson on the field, the Jets are going to be a tough defense to run against. Remember that when considering RBs going up against them. In 2015, the Jets gave up only 83.4 rushing yards per game--a mark good for 2nd in the NFL.

HOU - WR Will Fuller not expected to start

    Source: ESPN.com - Tania Ganguli

Houston Texans WR Will Fuller isn't expected to start in Week 1, but his role should increase as the season progresses, according to beat writer Tania Ganguli.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Texans selected Fuller in the first round of the 2016 NFL draft for good reason. He's a player with the speed to get by defenders in the blink of an eye. Fuller can use differing speeds to lull CBs to sleep, then turn on the jets to burn them. He needs to show better concentration at times as Fuller will sometimes try to do too much as he's worried about after the catch before securing the pass. We like his developmental upside for dynasty owners.

NE - RB LeGarrette Blount on the bubble?

    Source: ESPNBoston.com - Mike Reiss

New England Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount's (hip) roster spot isn't a given, but there shouldn't be any issues if he returns from his season-ending hip injury and runs hard.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Doesn't it feel like Blount is on the bubble almost every year? He'll continue to grind down defenses with his powerful rushing style, but Blount is not as fantasy relevant as Dion Lewis. Expect the Patriots to lean on their rushing attack over the first four games of the year while Tom Brady is suspended. That could mean more work for Blount. We see him as a RB4 for fantasy owners in 2016.

BUF - DE Shaq Lawson's timetable cloudy

Source: WGR Sports Radio 550 - Sal Capaccio

Buffalo Bills LB Shaq Lawson (shoulder) could miss half the season, or possibly the entire season, according to ESPN's Louis Riddick. However, a source told WGR 550's Sal Capaccio, Lawson isn't expected to miss that much time. The source also said a definitive timetable hasn't been set for Lawson.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lawson had shoulder surgery back in May, and the timetable for recovery should be about six months. We wouldn't be surprised to see the talented rookie put on the PUP list to begin the regular season. We'll learn more about this as training camp goes on.

MIA - WR DeVante Parker may see single coverages

    Source: NFL.com - Bucky Brooks

Miami Dolphins WR DeVante Parker could face a lot of one-on-one coverages with WR Jarvis Landry likely to command double coverage in the slot.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Parker should be able to take advantage of those situations. He's an ascending player in a great offense with Adam Gase taking over for the Dolphins. We like Parker as a WR3 with upside in 2016. His current ADP is WR32 (6.06) in 12-team PPR leagues.

DET - RB Ameer Abdullah continues to recover

    Source: NFL.com - Conor Orr

Detroit Lions RB Ameer Abdullah (shoulder) is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery to repair his labrum, but the team expects him to be ready for training camp. He has ascended to the No. 1 spot on the team's depth chart and will be tasked with a significant amount of pass protection, which isn't ideal given his smallish frame.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Abdullah is the lead back for the Lions, but they have an interesting backfield and the way the touches are split will impact all within. Theo Riddick is a fantastic receiver, and they should use him as the pass-catching back. Either Stevan Ridley or Zach Zenner is going to be the power back, and goal-line touches could go to one of these two. Abdullah is electrifying but his size limitations means he'll be splitting time in order to stay fresh. We see him as a high-end RB3 for fantasy owners.

CHI - QB Jay Cutler ready to ascend?

    Source: NFL.com - Conor Orr

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler had a decent season in 2015, and with Dowell Loggains promoted from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator, it could be another big year for the veteran quarterback. He also gets WR Kevin White back from injury, and he could have a late-career bounce back season similar to that of New York Giants QB Eli Manning, San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers and Pittsburgh Steeler QB Ben Roethlisberger.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Let's not get crazy here. Cutler is a decent starter, but he will still make bad decisions with the football (he led the NFL in turnovers for a QB in 2014). Last year was great, but former Bears OC Adam Gase (current Dolphins HC) is gone. Cutler's relationship with Loggains will help this transition, but we can only recommend the veteran QB as a low-end QB2 for fantasy owners in 2016.

CHI - Drops are problem for WR Kevin White

    Source: NFL.com - Conor Orr

Chicago Bears WR Kevin White struggled with drops during the offseason program. That problem will need to be addressed during the early portion of training camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

During his final year in college at West Virginia, White dropped 3.1 percent of the passes thrown his way. The average in the FBS in 2014 was 3.9 percent, so you can see how White showed better concentration than most. The point is; drops aren't a part of his game. Perhaps he's trying to do too much in the offseason as he missed all of last year. We feel that White will calm his mind and perform on Sundays. Fantasy owners should consider him a WR4 with upside.

    Friday Update

DEN - QB Mark Sanchez named the starter? Source: SIRIUS NFL Radio

Denver Broncos QB Mark Sanchez was endorsed as the starting quarterback to the team by head coach Gary Kubiak, according to DT Sylvester Williams.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're expecting this outcome given the lack of experience that Trevor Siemian has and the rawness of Paxton lynch's game. We aren't sure he'll hold it all season, because this is Mark Sanchez we're talking about and he tends to find ways to lose jobs these days. Despite having two 1,000 yard receivers for the first time in his career, we still don't like him enough to recommend him as anything more than a QB3 at this point. We may see him climb ADP during camp but we continue to suggest caution given his history and the looming other options.

SEA - RB Thomas Rawls will be eased back

    Source: ESPN.com - Sheil Kapadia

Seattle Seahawks RB Thomas Rawls (ankle) is making his way back from a fractured left ankle that included ligament damage in mid-December. He is expected to be ready for the start of training camp, but he will be eased back into action. That will also give the coaching staff a closer look at rookie RBs Alex Collins and C.J. Prosise.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rawls is an RB2 mostly by virtue of being the guy left holding the rock when Marshawn Lynch retired on Twitter. He's no lock to hold the job and you can't exactly feel the confidence from Seattle when they draft not one, not two but three running backs in the 2016 draft. CJ Prosise is the darling of the rookie set but don't sleep on Alex Collins as well. Consider our RB2 ranking a "soft" ranking, and keep a close eye on Prosise/Collins this August.

BUF - RB Mike Gillislee expected to be No. 2

    Source: WKBW.com - Joe Buscaglia

Buffalo Bills RB Mike Gillislee is expected to be the team's No. 2 running back even if the team signs another running back. The job is Gillislee's to lose.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We don't expect this to stick, as Gillislee is a shaky runner. Jonathan Williams should leapfrog him in camp, but does it really matter as long as LeSean McCoy is healthy? Probably not. Take Gillislee or Williams as a handcuff late if you want them at all. This is McCoy's team and he is a solid RB2 with upside.

SF - All eyes will be on QB battle

    Source: ESPN.com - Michael Wagaman

San Francisco 49ers QBs Blaine Gabbert and Colin Kaepernick head into training camp battling for the starting job under center. Many in the organization feel Gabbert is a better fit in head coach Chip Kelly's offense, and he has a good grasp of the offseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This entire situation just makes you feel ill. We do think Kaepernick could be a solid fit in Kelly's offense and find it hard to believe Gabbert is the real fit. That said, Kelly moves to the beat of his own drummer so either outcome is possible. Gabbert did look OK last year and had a solid end to the year but we'd still avoid him as more than QB3.

LA - RB Todd Gurley ready for first full camp

    Source:

Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) will be close to two full years removed from an anterior cruciate ligament injury, and conventional wisdom says players generally do not get back to full strength until two years after the injury. He will go through his first full training camp, and running backs coach Skip Peete said there is no limit to what Gurley can accomplish in his second NFL season.

Gurley has the skill set to be the best RB in the NFL...this year. Fantasy owners should consider him a top-2 RB in any format, and Gurley should go off the board in the mid-first round at the latest. He's going to be the centerpiece of the Rams offense...especially while they get rookie QB Jared Goff up to speed in the pros.

GB - Richard Rodgers starter over TE Jared Cook?

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Bob McGinn

Green Bay Packers TE Richard Rodgers is expected to start over TE Jared Cook, not just in 2016, but for the next few seasons, according to Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. An advantage Rodgers has this season is that he is in better shape after weighing up to 272 pounds last year.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rodgers had some big moments last season and those eight touchdowns were no fluke. He and Aaron Rodgers have some solid chemistry going on. The thing is, though, Jordy Nelson is back and Randall Cobb is healthy, so Richard Rodgers is likely to fall in the pecking order, making him a very weak TE2 or a strong TE3.

TEN - WR Dorial Green-Beckham not in best shape

    Source: TitansOnline.com - Jim Wyatt

Tennessee Titans WR Dorial Green-Beckham needs to be in better shape when training camp commences, even after losing some weight last season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

On top of needing to get his timing and routes together, which certainly was as big a factor as conditioning in his underwhelming performance last year. Add in the continuing slow growth of the Titans offense and we see him as a WR5 this year. The natural talent is there for him to be much more, but it may not yet be in the cards.

NFL - RB Ray Rice willing to give up salary

Source: USA TODAY Sports - Tom Pelissero

Free-agent RB Ray Rice (Ravens) will donate his salary to organizations with programs focusing on education and prevention of domestic violence if he is given another chance in the NFL.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We believe in second chances and could see him get another shot, given that out of the three players suspended back in 2014 who truly seems sorry and is trying to have a positive impact around domestic violence. Unfortunately he's just not a great runner anymore, which means his chances are not likely coming any time soon.

PHI - WR Nelson Agholor should start

    Source: ESPN.com - Phil Sheridan

Philadelphia Eagles WR Nelson Agholor is expected to be the No. 2 wider receiver behind WR Jordan Matthews, according to ESPN.com's Phil Sheridan.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is heartening given how shaky he was last year. He looked more like a rookie than most rookie WRs do lately. Hopefully he has grasped the playbook and improved his practice efforts, both things which hampered him last season (along with an ankle injury). Right now we see him as a WR5 or WR6, in part because of those struggles and in part because the passing offense (under new head coach Doug Pederson) isn't going to fill the air with footballs.

BUF - Buffalo hasn't pursued RB Fred Jackson

Source: WGR Sports Radio 550 - Joe Buscaglia

Free-agent RB Fred Jackson (Seahawks) has not received interest from his former team in the Buffalo Bills yet.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We don 't know that we expect him to, though they may still want to add some bodies to back up LeSean McCoy. Mike Gillislee hasn't shown us enough to feel good about and Jonathan Williams is exciting, but a rookie who recently was popped for a DWI. We're not sure Jackson has anything much left in the tank though as he looked just so-so in carries last year with the Seahawks.

CLE - WR Josh Gordon meets with commish

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon met with commissioner Roger Goodell Wednesday, July 20, regarding his possible return to football, according to sources. Gordon can reapply for reinstatement Aug. 1.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'd love to see Gordon get back on the field and he'd be a great asset to both the Browns and fantasy GMs. We do wonder whether he has finally "gotten it" and decided to make football a priority over his use of marijuana. Jim Brown, both the Browns' Hall of Fame running back and a part of the team's hierarchy, says Gordon has received help for his off-field issues. He's worth a late-round flier now, while his overall value would totally depend on when he was allowed to play this season and how many games he might miss.

ARI - WR Larry Fitzgerald feels great

    Source: NFL.com - Chris Wesseling

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald seems unlikely to retire anytime soon. 'Just trying to prepare for the next phase in your life, but I have a lot of good football left in me. How long I will play, I don't know. I feel great. I can still play at a high level. I just have to take it one year at a time and I got a really fantastic team I'm a part of,' Fitzgerald said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

One day we're going to find that Fitzgerald has a super-soldier serum like Captain America or a mirror that prevents age like Dorian Gray. It's the only explanation for his ageless production. We expect WR2/WR3 numbers from Fitzgerald this year as long as Carson Palmer stays healthy, because we shudder at the thought of this offense without Palmer. Feel confident in selecting Fitzgerald, and make sure you find out if he really has found the Fountain of Youth as we'd love to go swimming.

PHI - RB Ryan Mathews not a great fit in offense

    Source: PhillyVoice.com - Jimmy Kempski

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews isn't a great fit in head coach Doug Pederson's offense as he wants to move his backs around to create mismatches for opposing defenses in the passing game.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The continuing legacy of GM/coach Chip Kelly is wonderful for the rest of the NFC East. We'll see how on target Kempski is with this analysis, and still think Mathews could be a solid RB2, in part because the only other potential every down back is rookie Wendell Smallwood. If Mathews does end up a bad fit though, having Smallwood as a handcuff would be smart as he will probably get second crack at Mathews' role.

SEA - WR Tyler Lockett could take step forward

    Source: ESPN.com - Sheil Kapadia

Seattle Seahawks WR Tyler Lockett posted 51 receptions for 664 yards and six touchdowns, plus two more as a returner, last season. Head coach Pete Carroll raved about Lockett during the spring and said Lockett is 'in the middle' of everything the team planned offensively.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lockett is a trendy dark horse pick in fantasy right now, and many think he could become the chief receiver for this group in 2016. He's a great deep threat though Russell Wilson had issues connecting deep last season and if the offensive line is the issue we believe it to be, his opportunities might be low. Currently we have him rated as a WR4, which lines up with his current ADP as WR37. The upside is there for Lockett to finish around the top 20 in 2016.

SEA - TE Jimmy Graham won't be rushed back

    Source: ESPN.com - Sheil Kapadia

Seattle Seahawks TE Jimmy Graham (knee) is recovering from a ruptured right patellar tendon which he suffered Nov. 29. He is expected to be back on the field for the start of the regular season, but he won't be rushed back. Through the first 12 weeks last season he was the team's most targeted player.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team doesn't use him effectively anyway. What is it about Seattle that makes it the place good tight ends go to be mediocre? At best he is a TE2 and a low end one at that. We're not even sure he will make the start of the season, so a strong BUYER BEWARE is issued here as well.

LA - All eyes on QB Jared Goff

    Source: ESPN.com - Nick Wagoner

The Los Angeles Rams are hopeful QB Jared Goff will win the starting job sooner rather than later and he likely will, according to beat writer Nick Wagoner. However, his development through training camp and the preseason will be critical in shaping the team's expectations and season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We like Goff a lot and will be interested to see how he develops as a pro. He makes quick decisions and has no problem staying in the pocket under duress to make a field-flipping throw. We would like to see him lead receivers a little better, and his size (6'4" 215 pounds) does make us a bit concerned about his durability. As a rookie, we can only recommend Goff as a QB3 for fantasy owners. However, we love his dynasty upside and won't be surprised if he's a top-12 QB someday.

BAL - Kamar Aiken not a projected starter

    Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens WRs Steve Smith and Mike Wallace are projected as the two starting wide receivers for Baltimore, according to ESPN.com's Jamison Hensley.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We have both ranked as WR4/WR5 options. Smith was on fire last year before he got hurt so we could see a return to similar production, but he's old and it's hard to buy in heavy on that. Wallace has failed everywhere he's gone after he left the Steelers, and we don't know that we can get enthusiastic about a new spot for him just because Joe Flacco has an immense arm. We feel better about Old Man Smith over Wallace, in point of fact.

'Matt never fully recovered from knee surgery that occurred this past offseason, and he will not be ready to return to football activities at this time,' general manager Kevin Colbert said in a statement released by the team.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Disappointing but not shocking and not really impactful for fantasy either since he rarely did much on the field on the occasions he was healthy.

MIN - RB Adrian Peterson has to adapt to shotgun

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune - Matt Vensel

Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson will be part of a more shotgun-centric offense this season, and he struggled to run out of the gun early last year. The team shifted its offense to run more plays under center afterwards. Peterson vowed to become a better receiver this offseason.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

At 31 it's unlikely that Peterson will become great receiving the ball or blocking on pass downs, but the effort is admirable. We did hear this last season as well, though but as Vensel points out, they had to move out of the shotgun because Peterson couldn't handle it and was visibly unhappy. Peterson is an easy RB1 in fantasy anyway, so receiving the ball is gravy. We're not counting on it happening much more than usual though.

NFL - Eugene Monroe cites medical concerns

    Source: The Players' Tribune

Updating an earlier report, free-agent OT Eugene Monroe (Ravens) cited medical concerns in his retirement announcement on The Players' Tribune Thursday, July 21. Monroe cited memory loss, head and body trauma as factors in his decision.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is notable mostly for the fact that he is having as many CTE-style issues after only six years in the NFL. Of course, added to football played during college and high school (eight years) that's a lot of opportunity for head injury, but it is notable that he is feeling the effects enough to force retirement. We wish him well in his future recovery and endeavors, which includes medical marijuana advocacy.

SEA - DE Michael Bennett enters camp unhappy

    Source:

Seattle Seahawks DE Michael Bennett (ankle) made it clear he wants a new deal, and he did not participate in organized team activities (OTAs) as a result of his unhappiness. He did show for mandatory minicamp, but he sat out with an ankle injury. If his deal is not redone before the season, it will be interesting to see how it affects Bennett into the regular season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's only so much you can do with the cap restraints teams have and the Seahawks have benefited from some cheap rookie contracts for their big stars. We knew once Russell Wilson got paid big, it would be hard to keep everyone happy. Bennett has been tremendous in this scheme, but it's a scheme which prides itself on plug and play defenders. So Bennett may have to wait until he hits free agency in 2018.

SF - WR corps inexperienced in San Fran

    Source: ESPN.com - Michael Wagaman

San Francisco 49ers Torrey Smith is one of just three receivers with more than 40 career receptions heading into the 2016 season. WRs Jerome Simpson (150) and Quinton Patton (56) are the others. Simpson and Patton will be in the mix to serve as the No. 2 receiver opposite Smith.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Things look foggy for the offense in San Francisco. Unless something shakes it up, there are certainly cracks in the passing offense, experience (or lack thereof) being one of them. Add in that Blaine Gabbert or Colin Kaepernick are San Andreas size flawed prospects at quarterback and this is a passing offense which seems like a disaster in the making. Smith is the only receiver we even kind of like and he's a WR4/WR5.

SF - RB Bruce Miller could help out at TE

    Source: ESPN.com - Michael Wagaman

San Francisco 49ers FB Bruce Miller is learning the nuances of the tight end position, but he has good hands and can also help out on special teams. He might be used the No. 3 tight end behind TEs Garrett Celek and Vance McDonald.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We don't expect much more than blocking from the tight ends, so even adding Miller makes no real difference.

PHI - RB Wendell Smallwood to work on protection

    Source: PhillyVoice.com - Jimmy Kempski

Philadelphia Eagles RB Wendell Smallwood needs the most work in pass protection, which will be an area the team needs to trust him in to play him in the regular season. He has shown the ability to be a weapon as a receiver.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If he can do that, he could see a lot more playing time. Many are saying Ryan Mathews is a poor fit for the offensive scheme in Philadelphia, while Smallwood is not only a better fit but is a guy this new regime brought in, unlike Mathews. Right now Matthews is a decent RB2, but this bears watching. Smallwood isn't a guy to roster as more than a handcuff, but his value could rise with a solid camp, especially if Mathews struggles.

    ***Breaking News***

    Hi Folks,

Bad news out of Pittsburgh this morning. ESPN's Dan Graziano is reporting that Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell is reportedly facing a 4 game suspension for a missed (not failed) drug test.

    Link: http://espn.go.com/espn/now?nowId=21...088527004982-4

Clipped from the story by Dan Graziano: "Sources close to the situation tell me Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell is facing a four-game suspension for violation of the NFL's drug policy. The suspension is the result of a MISSED drug test, not a failed one, and the reason it hasn't yet been announced is that the appeal process is still going on. No date for Bell's appeal has been set, though it's expected that it will be heard before the start of the regular season, meaning that if it's not overturned, he would miss the first four games of the season. Bell was suspended for the first three games of last season (later reduced to two) for a violation of the policy on substances of abuse after he was arrested for marijuana possession and DUI in the summer of 2014."

    [[[[[[[[[[[[ OUR VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]

The appeal has yet to be heard but it's looking right now like the team will be without Bell once again. This once again puts DeAngelo Williams in the spotlight and adds more to his value. We can see Williams now in the 7th and 8th round of drafts depending on how things unfold from here.

Thanks to Footballguys Sigmund Bloom and Daniel Simpkins for the headsup. I hope you have a great Friday.

Not a bad theory, but all depends on the lines. Would pass if 49ers are favored.

    Saturday Update

PIT - Le'Veon Bell may face suspension Source: USA TODAY Sports - A.J. Perez

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell is facing a four-game suspension for a violation of the NFL's drug policy because of a missed test, according to sources. The appeals process is underway, and no announcement has been made. No date for Bell's appeal has been set, but it's expected to be heard before the start of the regular season. If it's not overturned, he would miss the first four games of the season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Pittsburgh radio personality Mark Madden reported this rumor over a month ago, and it appears he has been vindicated. Bell will appeal, but we should rank him and the rest of the Steelers offense as if he'll miss the first four games. On the plus side, this will give Bell more time to get comfortable on his hopefully healed knee injury. He's still worth a third round pick at worst, and he may go in the second. DeAngelo Williams moves up to at least the 7th/8th round, if not 6th, on the strength of four elite projection RB games and the injury upside if Bell goes down again. Williams could also play a large enough role when Bell returns to still merit flex consideration.

DAL - RB Ezekiel Elliott denies claims

    Source: USA TODAY Sports

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott was accused of assaulting his ex-girlfriend Friday, July 22, but was not arrested, according to a police report filed in Ohio. The league will review the accusation under its personal conduct policy, but Elliott denied the accusations. According to the article, "The police report cites four witnesses, who each said they didn’t see an assault take place."

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Some reports are coming out that help Elliott, such as the police report having four witnesses who deny the alleged victim's claim. but the league will conduct their own investigation. It's very difficult to predict how the league will react to this news. Don't move Elliott down yet, but be open to changing that stance if more facts come out that paint him in a bad light in this incident. If Elliott does end up missing time at the beginning of the season, Alfred Morris would be better situated to benefit with Darren McFadden recovering from a broken elbow and a notorious slow healer.

MIN - RB Jerick McKinnon could see bigger role

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune - Matt Vensel

Minnesota Vikings RB Jerick McKinnon could be more involved in the passing game if he was able to improve his pass protection over the offseason. He is not expected to receive more than 75 to 100 carries this season.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If the Vikings run more out of the shotgun, he could be much better than Adrian Peterson in that role, and he has already shown his explosiveness as a receiver and runner late last year. McKinnon is an excellent back half of your draft pick, with potential flex worthy upside depending on his role, and RB1 upside if Peterson goes down.

CLE - WR Josh Gordon decision not imminent

Source: The Chronicle-Telegram - Scott Petrak

Updating previous reports, Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon has no timetable for a decision on his potential reinstatement, but one source said it isn't expected for at least six weeks.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Gordon's previous WR1 upside and young age of 25 makes him an enticing second half of the draft pick on the non-zero chance he plays this year. Still, there's no guarantee that he'll be in shape, play effectively, or even figure into the Browns plans. If the Browns learn he is reinstated right before the season, it is hard to imagine him playing a big role right away since he has been away from the team.

GB - WR Jordy Nelson ahead of schedule

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Bob McGinn

Green Bay Packers WR Jordy Nelson (knee) appears to be ahead of the curve in his rehabilitation, and Nelson said he would have been able to play in the Super Bowl last year had the Packers qualified.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's no reason to hesitate if you are targeting Nelson in the second. He has consistently been a strong WR1 as long as Aaron Rodgers is on the field. The whole Packers offense should be revived with his return.

SD - WR Travis Benjamin to be returner

Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune - Tom Krasovic

San Diego Chargers WR Travis Benjamin will be the team's punt returner in 2016. Benjamin may not be used as a returner as often if he receives significant snaps at wide receiver.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Benjamin can break returns for touchdowns, so it adds a very slight bump in leagues that count return touchdowns and a more significant bump in leagues that count return yards. Benjamin still has a strong upside flex play and bye/injury wide receiver as the deep target replacement for Malcom Floyd.

JAX - WR Allen Hurns to move around

    Source: The Florida Times-Union - Ryan O'Halloran

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hurns will compete with Julius Thomas to be the #2 target behind Allen Robinson, with Marqise Lee and Rashad Greene also getting targets as the #3 and #4 receivers. Hurns will have trouble being a fantasy WR2 this year unless he has a high touchdown rate again and the Jaguars have to run a more wide open offense again because they are a losing team.

OAK - RB DeAndre Washington may have role early

    Source: CSNBayArea.com - Scott Bair

Oakland Raiders RB DeAndre Washington likely receive a solid role in the offense because the coaching staff thinks he can contribute right away. He could be used as a third-down back that can run inside and be a receiver out of the backfield. Washington can be a compliment to RB Latavius Murray since they have different skills.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Raiders seem far from sold on Murray, so Washington getting on the field at all will be something to watch. It's not difficult to picture Washington looking much better than Murray in initial burst and lateral agility, so he can stake a claim for more touches with success as a third-down back. Washington is a great running back target in the second half of your draft.

ARI - QB Carson Palmer to improve in 2016?

    Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Josh Alper

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Palmer is almost always available outside of the top 6 quarterbacks. If all three of his top receivers can stay healthy this year, that and the added punch of David Johnson playing a larger role will make Palmer a profitable pick as a mid-late QB1.

SD - RB Melvin Gordon seeks help for fumbling

    Source: ESPN.com - Ben Goessling

San Diego Chargers RB Melvin Gordon worked with Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson this offseason to help fix his fumbling issues.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Getting help is good, but having a fumbling problem that requires help is not. Gordon didn't come close to living up to the hype in his rookie year and he's coming off of microfracture surgery. His best hope for fantasy relevance is an improved offensive line and the Chargers turning into a winning team that can manufacture run-friendly game scripts. Chances are Danny Woodhead will be the most valuable Chargers fantasy running back again this year.

Carolina Panthers WRs Corey Brown, Stephen Hill, Brenton Bersin, Kevin Norwood and Damiere Byrd will compete for two roster spots during training camp.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brown has some experience, but he plays a similar role to fellow Ohio State speedster Ted Ginn. Hill has the highest ceiling, but he is coming back from a torn ACL. Byrd has gotten some buzz and the team added Norwood during the season last year, so this is really a wide open competition.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Carolina Panthers WR Ted Ginn Jr. could be a candidate for the kick returner job during training camp and the preseason.

SF - Tank Carradine may be pass-rush specialist

    Source: CSNBayArea.com - Matt Maiocco

San Francisco 49ers DE Tank Carradine likely will be used as a pass-rush specialist this season when the team is in their nickel package. There is a chance that he could be in the starting lineup because of LB Aaron Lynch's suspension.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lynch is one of the best players on the 49ers defense and clearly their best pass rusher. If Carradine doesn't take a big step forward this year, the lowly 49ers will have even more trouble putting resistance to opposing passing games with an inexperienced secondary and feeble pass rush.

Indianapolis Colts DE Arthur Jones has been suspended for the first four games of the 2016 season for violating the NFL's policy on performance enhancing drugs.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones has been a free agent bust, playing only nine games in two years after signing a five year, 33 million dollar contract. 2015 third round pick Henry Anderson is recovering from a torn ACL and might not be ready for Week 1, so the Detroit Lions should have an excellent rushing matchup to open the season.

SEA - DE Michael Bennett unhappy with contract

    Source: Huffington Post

Seattle Seahawks DE Michael Bennett is unhappy with his contract, saying he wants 'to be fairly compensated with the top guys in the league,' and believing that he's 'definitely one of the top five defensive ends.' He added: 'I'm just to the point where it's kind of like, if you don't think I'm valuable, then just get rid of me.' Bennett is set to make $5.5 million this year and $7 million next year.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Seahawks are unlikely to give him more money with two years left on his deal, but next year they could compensate him for extra production under his current deal, like they did when they extended Marshawn Lynch.

SF - QB Blaine Gabbert praised by Jerry Rice

    Source: NFL.com - Conor Orr

Former San Francisco 49ers WR Jerry Rice praised QB Blaine Gabbert, who will be competing for the starting quarterback job with QB Colin Kaepernick in training camp. 'I had an opportunity to meet him, and you can just tell the confidence. He feels he has a legitimate chance of being the starter. Then you got Colin Kaepernick, and I don't know if they're gonna be able to, you know, that offense of Chip Kelly because he likes to get over the ball, he likes constant movement and all of that,' Rice said.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Nick Foles wasn't thought of much more highly than Gabbert is right now before he was a stud QB1 during his first season under Chip Kelly. Gabbert doesn't have Foles' supporting cast, but he does have a terrible team that will put him in catchup game scripts all year. We wouldn't draft Gabbert, but he could be a nice cheap DFS play for some matchups and part of a streaming quarterback approach, assuming he holds off Kaepernick.

GB - Green Bay players asked about PEDs

    Source: ESPN.com - Rob Demovsky

Green Bay Packers LB Julius Peppers and LB Clay Matthews will be interviewed by the NFL regarding PED allegations from an Al-Jazeera America report, team president Mark Murphy confirmed Thursday, July 21.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The statements the reports were based on have since been recanted, but the NFL is going forward with their investigation. The NFLPA has criticized the investigation, which is highly unlikely to yield any punishment for the players involved, which include now retired QB Peyton Manning.

    Sunday Update

PIT - Le'Veon Bell unlikely to win appeal Source: NFL.com - Conor Orr

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell is unlikely to have a successful appeal for his pending four-game suspension due to the NFL's stringent policies. The results of the appeal are expected before the regular season starts. Additionally, Bell missed several drug tests resulting in the suspension, as opposed to the originally reported one missed test, according to sources.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Some people say drug tests in the NFL are largely intelligent tests. It goes without saying, missing a drug test was not wise. Bell will see his ADP fall with this news (a third-rounder now--most likely), while backup DeAngelo Williams will rise to around a sixth- or seventh-round pick.

NYG - WR Victor Cruz expects to be ready for camp

Source: New York Daily News - Ebenezer Samuel and Peter Sblendorio

New York Giants WR Victor Cruz (calf, knee) said he will be ready to participate once training camp begins.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We can't wait to see Cruz salsa-dancing in the end zone again someday. However, coming back from his injuries have proven to be difficult. We're hopeful Cruz can regain his form but want to see him in camp/preseason first.

CLE - RB Duke Johnson to line up at WR

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Terry Pluto

Cleveland Browns RB Duke Johnson will line up at wide receiver at times during the season because the team likes to find different ways to throw passes to Johnson.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We like it! Johnson is the type of player who needs the rock in his hand as much as his body can hold up. He's not a big back, but Johnson is explosive and tough to bring down in the open field. Johnson has a current ADP of RB23 (5.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

CLE - Cleveland has plays for WR Terrelle Pryor

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Terry Pluto

Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson has drawn up plays to get the ball into WR Terrelle Pryor's hands and allow him to run in the open field.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jackson is one of the most creative offensive-minded coaches in all of the NFL. We like that he has a package for Pryor--a player who has a freakish blend of size and athleticism.

GB - RB Eddie Lacy must impact passing game

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Bob McGinn

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy will be pushed into the passing game, according to running backs coach Ben Sirmans, but Sirmans said Lacy will have to beat man coverage. Last year, RB James Starks played 68 more snaps than Lacy and caught 27 more passes.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lacy had a career-low 187 carries last year as conditioning and stamina problems seemed to hold him back. That's why he did P90X to get into fantastic shape this offseason. The Packers will have an explosive offense, and things should open up even more for the ground game with WR Jordy Nelson returning to full health. Fantasy owners believe in Lacy at this time, and he's getting drafted as RB9 (2.12) in 12-team PPR leagues. He's been a top-10 fantasy back for two of his three years in the league, but last year he fell to 24. We'll see if he can regain his form in 2016.

HOU - WR Cecil Shorts the best option in slot?

    Source: ESPN.com - Tania Ganguli

Houston Texans WR Cecil Shorts is likely to open the year as the starting slot receiver, in the opinion of beat writer Tania Ganguli.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Shorts is best served as a slot receiver in the NFL. We'll see rookie Will Fuller and second-year pro Jaelen Strong compete to be the team's No.2 WR opposite DeAndre Hopkins. With new QB Brock Osweiler, we're excited to see what Hopkins can do. Any other target in this passing game is an unknown, making Shorts, Fuller or Strong all late-round fliers or waiver-wire speed dial guys.

DET - TE Cole Wick could start over TE Eric Ebron?

Source: Detroit Free Press - Carlos Monarrez

Detroit Lions TE Cole Wick looked 'spectacular' in offseason practices and could be in line to push TE Eric Ebron for a starting job if he can carry over that momentum into training camp, according to Detroit Free Press reporter Carlos Monarrez.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ebron has natural athleticism but has never played up to his potential. There is no question that 2016 is a make-or-break year.

NYG - RB Andre Williams drawing praise from coach

Source: New York Daily News - Ralph Vacchiano

New York Giants RB Andre Williams is poised for a bounce-back year in the opinion of head coach Ben McAdoo.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We doubt that happens. Williams is a large RB but he lacks the power he should have for a player his size. The Giants RB situation is a mess, but starter Rashad Jennings could perform like a RB3 (at least) for fantasy owners.

BAL - QB Joe Flacco not placed on PUP list

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco (knee) was not placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list prior to training camp next week.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A good sign for Flacco here. Even though he's not on PUP, we think the Ravens take it easy on Flacco in camp and the preseason.

NFL - RB John Kuhn wants to join contender

    Source: ESPNWisconsin.com - Jason Wilde

Free-agent FB John Kuhn (Packers) said he would like to sign with a Super Bowl contender if he is not able to re-sign with the Green Bay Packers.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's sad that Kuhn isn't with the Packers, but we could see him latch on with another team at some point before the regular season. The fullback is a dying position, so only a small handful of teams would be interested.

NO - No talks between Saints, QB Drew Brees

    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Triplett
New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees said he has not had contract extension talks with the Saints in the past three months.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With a $30 million cap hit in 2016, we're surprised something hasn't been done yet to extend Brees and lower that number. Brees said he would like to sign an extension at some point before the start of the regular season.

    16. GB - RB James Starks a red-zone weapon?
Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Bob McGinn
Green Bay Packers RB James Starks' ability on screen passes makes him a weapon in the red zone, running backs coach Ben Sirmans said.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Keep this in mind when considering Eddie Lacy for your fantasy team. Starks is a valuable handcuff for Lacy owners, and he's coming off the board late in 12-team PPR league drafts (RB57 13.10). Lacy is currently RB9 in drafts (2.12), but realize that Starks is going to have at least a limited role...and maybe a role larger than some think.
