The Jets have traded defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson, a talented but sometimes-troubled former first-round draft pick who was a Pro Bowler in 2014.

The Jets on Friday sent Richardson to the Seahawks and got wide receiver Jermaine Kearse in return, plus Seattle's 2018 second-round draft pick. The Jets and Seahawks also exchanged seventh-round picks for next year.

Stockpiling draft picks makes sense for the Jets, who are rebuilding with younger players and focusing more on the future than on winning in 2017. Plus, general manager Mike Maccagnan had been looking to trade Richardson for months.

And now, finally, the deal is done. At this point, it looks like a good one for Maccagnan.

The move freed up $8.069 million in salary cap space for the Jets, with no dead money attached. Richardson was entering the final year of his rookie contract, and was due to make that amount of cash -- his fifth-year option salary.

Since he seemed unlikely to re-sign with the Jets after the 2017 season, the trade makes sense. The Jets still have two talented defensive linemen -- Leonard Williams and Muhammad Wilkerson -- so Richardson, 26, was also expendable from that perspective.

In Kearse, 27, the Jets get a veteran receiver to pair with second-year pro Robby Anderson. Kearse is entering his sixth NFL season. These are his catches/yards/touchdowns splits over the past three seasons, starting with 2016: 41/510/one, 49/685/five, and 38/537/one.
