Batch is hurt BIG BEN better play

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch, who played just four plays after replacing Ben Roethlisberger in an overtime loss to Kansas City, has a wrist injury that requires surgery and will sideline him for six weeks.
This leaves the Steelers (6-4) in a precarious situation. Roethlisberger left with concussion-like symptoms with 12:21 remaining in overtime after he took a knee to the helmet while being sacked in the eventual 27-24 loss to the Chiefs.

Roethlisberger, who threw for 398 yards and three touchdowns, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette after the game that he felt OK. He was examined Monday and his status for Sunday night's game in Baltimore is uncertain.

The Steelers' third-string quarterback is Dennis Dixon, a fifth-round pick out of Oregon in 2008 who has thrown one pass in his NFL career.
Sunday's action was Batch's first since 2007. He sat out last season with a broken collarbone.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said after the game that he was not certain how severe the injury might be.
"He took a blow, needless to say, it was a concussion-oriented thing so I doubt he was going to come back into the football game," Tomlin said. "I don't have a lot of information in terms of where he is or his level of availability. We will have more information as we proceed."

It was the second loss in a row for the Steelers, who have fallen twice to division rival Cincinnati and were without injured Pro Bowl safety Troy Polamalu.
Guard Chris Kemoeatu also was injured in the game, after suffering what the Post-Gazette reported is a sprained MCL in the right knee.

    Who is Dennis Dixon?

Those in Pittsburgh are fully aware of Dennis Dixon. But there are a lot of football fans around the country who are unfamiliar with the Steelers’ third-string quarterback, who may start Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens.

    Dixon
Here is a quick bio on Dixon:

    Age: 24

    College: Oregon

Draft status: Fifth round (No. 156 overall) to Pittsburgh in 2008

Notes: Dixon has thrown one career pass for three yards in his NFL career. It was to receiver Hines Ward in 2008... Dixon suffered a significant knee injury in his final season at Oregon, which is a major reason his stock dropped in the NFL draft... He is quick and has the ability to make plays with his feet. But Dixon really worked on improving his accuracy in the offseason and in training camp to fit in Pittsburgh's offense... There have been rumors in the past that the Steelers would implement a Wildcat package with Dixon, but the coaching staff said they were not interesting in running that style of offense.

If I’m the Pittsburgh Steelers, the first free agent I’m calling this week is quarterback Jeff Garcia. With the status of Ben Roethlisberger (head) up in the air this week and backup Charlie Batch out for the rest of the regular season, the Steelers need a veteran replacement. Although chances are slim that someone can come in and start right away against the Baltimore Ravens, if anyone has a chance, it’s Garcia. It will be interesting to see how Pittsburgh handles this if Roethlisberger isn't healthy enough to return. Would the Steelers really go with Dennis Dixon in a crucial game?
