    If giants get the 2 the score would be 23-17... If pats got a td the extra point could be blocked and tie the game.

    Yes it is exactly the reason and they had nothing to lose. No difference being up 4 or 5 with the game almost over, whereas 6 COULD have made a difference with a missed PAT.
