    New England Patriots -3.5

    New England Patriots -3.5

Tom Brady and the Pats should give their home crowd something to cheer Saturday against the Arizona Cardinals in Matt Leinart's pro debut.

Now we feel that the Cardinals will be greatly improved this year while the Patriots are not as strong as past seasons, but we do not think that will be reflected in this contest.

Arizona coach Dennis Green has already announced that Matt Leinart will get some extended playing time at quarterback here. Do not get us wrong as we feel that Leinart is the real deal and will be a stud in this league. However, he is being asked to step right in here less than a week after finally signing a contract, and that lack of preparation should prove costly vs. this veteran New England defense.

The Pats realize that they are not getting any younger with the exception of running back Laurence Muroney, and their receiving corps is very questionable right now. However both the starters and the reserves looked good in a 26-23 opening loss at Atlanta, and we look for New England to continue to mask its deficiencies here and reward the home fans with a rather safe victory.

Remember also that the Patriots are now 16-6, 72.7 percent ATS in their last 22 pre-season home games.

    Play: Patriots -3.5 (-110)

    Pats Should Deal Cards Loss

The Patriots host their first preseason game against the Cardinals Saturday evening, and everything looks right for New England to cover the spread.

The Patriots return home off a 3-point loss at Atlanta to host the Cardinals who upended Pittsburgh during the unveiling of their new home stadium last week.

Tom Brady should see more action at QB for New England while rookie Laurence Maroney (9 car, 66 yds last week) will try and give Bill Belichick and his coaching staff more to think about at running back. Arizona will probably give new RB Edgerrin James more touches, but that might not be enough for an offense that gained just over 200 yards last week in the opener.

The edge here goes to New England, considering that teams who defeat the defending Super Bowl champions are just 4-10-1 ATS in their next game against an opponent off a loss. Toss in the fact that Belichick is 12-6 ATS hosting NFC opposition during the preseason and we'll stay at home with the Pats here tonight.

    Play: Patriots -3½
