Why was niners win considered an upset?

Because of the line? Because of brees? Niners did have the best record and a bye. Just wondering when I heard it on a sportscenter update a little while ago.

I didn't consider it an upset. Niners ML was my top play this week. IMO todays Packers/Giants game was the only upset this weekend.

Niners got lucky with all those turnovers. Saints were the better team.

Cause people don't understand that defense wins championships. Plus they didn't think that the 49ers offense were capable of putting up more than 20 points offensively.

But they forget that the Saints lost to the 7-9 Seahawks on the road last year too. They just aren't as successful on the road.

It was officially an upset because the 49ers were underdogs. That is the only criterion for an upset.

I did not even think Saints should have been favored. Someone here posted a thread asking for the spread for Divisional playoffs. (before Wild Card games were complete). I thought Niners should have been favored by 2-3, and I said as much in that thread.

It is a relatively simple concept.

When the linesmakers set one team -160 and the other team at +149, then if the +149 team wins, that is considered an upset.

Right but upsets are not an opinion. If an underdog wins, even if they should not have been an underdog, it is still an upset.

I would define an upset as a heavily favored team getting beat....3 points is nothing...

Made me think twice honestly. At first I would have completely dismissed the OP, but the Niners were favored in the Giants game, too, and we lost on some BS. I hope I don't see no BS ref calls. PLEASE, GOD!!

P.S. The Saints were favored because they been having circus shows up in the Louisiana Dome, and most people thought that would continue on the road against a good D. LMAO. Giants are Road Warriors, that's what makes me feel better! Go Giants!

The line says its still an upset.

    The underdog winning = upset.

Its just a question of degree.

Lines can be off you know. The wrong team can be favored. Look at the saints/colts super bowl a few years ago.

because they needed 5 turnovers to win the game,

and if they played again another 10 times over the saints would win all 10 unless they turn the ball over 5 times 10 times in a row.

Saints weren't penciled in unless they had home field advantage throughout. They are only formidible when play on turf in their dome. You are forgetting that they lost to the friggin 7-9 Seahawks in the wild card round of the playoffs last year.

That great 49ers D gave up 32 points, and 435 passing yards. Also 3, 100 yard receivers (1 WR, 1 RB and 1 TE). Yes they stopped the run, but Saints are known for the air assault, and that great 49ers D couldn't stop it.

They better get that great 49ers D straighten out next week.

Eli Manning is no Drew Brees. No need.

With that said, Eli Manning doesn't need to be Drew Brees for the Giants to win.

SF wins with seconds left and everyone acts like it was easy money after the fact. I'll give SF credit for forcing some of the turnovers & knocking out Pierre Thomas but NO still blew the game. The defense got too carried away with blitzing and gave Smith way too much 1-on-1 coverage and easier throws. They were holding SF to dump offs to Gore and eating clock when they decided to all out blitz with :50 left and blew the game.

They win by 4 points after the Saints turn the ball over 6 times. That's what we call "luck". They were correctly chosen as the underdogs in that game.

So the Niners should have lost by 20+ points at home to the Saints if they were not lucky?

because of the teams youth and inexperience across the board. i dont think most people we sold on if they were legit. 9ers pass offense was questionable
