Cam Newton thrown to the wolves ?

Too soon to start or the best move the Panthers have

Panthers pick Cam Newton as starter for opener

I will go out on a limb and say Cam will fare better than JaMarcus Russell

I think he will undoubtedly be head and shoulders above Russell.
I disagree with the idea this is in the Panthers best interests for 2 reasons.
#1 Panthers burned a high draft pick on Claussen, you owe it to yourself to give him another chance to prove himself even if it be for no other reason than for trade value and to give Cam a couple extra weeks to get ready.
#2 Cam has looked horrendous in preseason outside of a couple plays he made with his legs. His form, accuracy and understanding of his progressions has been abysmal.

ya he definitely is better than russel but imo sitting the first year(s) is a great thing for a QB, especially someone like newton who has the tools but needs to sharpen up for NFL.

I agree with FishFace5 that Cam should not start for the 1st 3-4 games. That doesn't mean he would ride the bench. Give him some playtime without the burden of being the 'starter'

Yeah they should keep him on the bench and groom him to be a better QB... But Carolina is desperate...

he wasn't picked to start because he is good, he was picked because of limited options... both Jimmy Boy and him are terrible

I think you nailed it...Newton will sell tickets, create media hype, and get people interested and talking about the Panthers. It's a high stakes gamble that won't bode well for Newton, the player.

Bad move by Carolina. Newton is not ready other than his only touchdown throw yesterday he has been ineffective with his passing. While Carolina is banking on him being the future for them it is too soon to throw him out there. The most quarterback ready player on the team is Derek Anderson and he should be the starter till Newton has a better grasp on reading defense's and learning the offensive.

He will fail miserably at QB, doesn't have the character or the intelligence to play QB in NFL. They have more than 2 receivers out on each play and he will get crushed when he tucks it and runs.

I like AZ on the money line. Carolina defense has been getting pushed around in preseason. Can not see a rookie QB/bad defense winning weel 1 on the road. AZ not that strong, but good enough to take care of Carolina.

if he fails to perform he will not sell many tickets. Sports fans in the Carolinas are fickle and only like winning.

i agree with fail to preform but if he rushes for 165 yards and two touchdowns one week and their record is 0-3, he will still fill stands. people love freakshows.

Tim Tebow is exactly the same athlete as Newton but apparently it's okay that Newton gets to start...hmm.

It's too soon. He will be confused as hell reading a "regular season" defense and will learn it is painful to pull it down and run often.

Newton is the worst #1 pick I've seen in years. To echo the others, yes, Tebow was better than Newton and look where Tim is. Does Newton have an upside throwing-wise that Tebow didn't? Probably. But Tebow has way more intangibles that lead to a winning QB.

Finally, Jason Campbell was and is better than Cam Newton. Period. Campbell could always throw. Who drafts a guy #1 who isn't a true passer? Really one of the worst decisions I've seen in a long while.

it really doesnt matter, all running QBs are DUMB

Did Randall Cunnigham win a super bowl? NO
Did McNabb win a super bowl? NO
Did Michael Vick win a super bowl? NO
Did Kordell Stewart win a super bowl? NO
Did Vince Young win a super bowl? NO
Did Akili Smith win a super bowl? NO
Did Wade win a super bowl? NO
Did Demarcus Russell win a super bowl? NO

When was the last time a black running QB won the super bowl?

Um John Elway was a running QB, until he got old. Even then, he still tried to run. So yes, Elway was the first and only running QB to win the Superbowl. When your saying black QB's winning the Superbowl, only Williams, McNabb, and McNair were the only blacks to play in 3 out of 44 superbowls. That's an only 7% opportunity for blacks QB. If Blacks Qb's had at least a 20% representative in the Superbowl, that margin would increase.

Mike Vick will be the first, and he'll probably do it this year or once during his 5 year $100 Million dollar contract

Frost, Elway was not a running QB. He was a great passer who could also run. Like Steve Young.

When they first come into the league, all of the "running QBs" (McNabb, McNair, Vick) do not do well. Why? They don't know how to be a pocket passer. So, IF they are to be good one day, they learn that, or they fail.

Running is too easy of a way to win through HS and college, therefore these QBs don't develop the only skill that works in the NFL (until it may be too late). When did Cunningham finally have a real shot at winning the Super Bowl? When he was old (no running) and a successul passer.

please, Derek Anderson doesnt belong on a NFL roster - these are his puke inducing stats over the last 3 years

    392/792 49.5% 4568yrd 5.8/A 19td/28Int

    Jamarcus Russel posted these stats

    354/680 52.1% 4083yrds 6.0/A 18td/23Int

So Anderson completes fewer passes, for less yards per attempt throws Ints at a higher frequency and TDs less often than JAMARCUS RUSSEL did, and you think he should be in an NFL uniform?

I have made a ton betting against running black QBs(McNabb, Kordell, Vick,...) in the conference championship games, they always turn the ball over when the game is on the line in these games

    1. Why the fuk are you comparing Anderson to Russell when the qb's in question in the selected quotes is Anderson, Clausen and Newton.

    2. Did I say Anderson was a better passer than Russell?

    3. Is Anderson a better qb than Russell? Guess so, Anderson is still in the league and the black fat ass is not.

    4. Newton 24/57 in the preseason for a whopping 42%
