This is what I think. Someone please correct me if I am wrong...and I very well may be.

1. Openers is what the vegas oddsmakers say the lines will be. You can start betting as soon as openers are posted.

2. Closers is what the line closes at after the public has bet on the game and the casinos have adjusted their lines according to total bets on each side. They do their best to end with 50% bettors on each side of the line.

My real question is can you still bet on a game after the line has closed? I am under the assumption that you can still bet on sides, up to the beginning of the game, and well after the line has closed.

Why would the casinos ever close the lines then? Why wouldn't they just keep them adjustable till tipoff so they could adjust according to the public betting?
