Its when you buy one team and then try to sell or buy the other team right away at a profit. I usually try to do this on Live Betting on Matchbook when their is good liquidity.

    Example:

Let's say the Patriots are playing the Lions and the Moneyline is like, Lions/Pats +400/-450. Let's say you're playing at a book that does live in-game betting. You put down a $100 on the Lions to win at +400 ($100 wins $400). If the Lions get the ball first and score on their opening possession, when the game goes to commercial, the live lines have now changed to account for the Lions 7-0 lead. Now the moneyline might be something like, Lions/Pats +200/-250. At this point, you could "cover" your Lions bet with a $250 on the Pats to win ($250 wins $100). Now if the Lions hold on to win, you'd win $400 - $250 = $150, but if the Pats come back, you'd break even because you won and lost $100. Or you could get even more aggressive and bet $300 on the Pats at -250. This way you'd win money no matter who wins! The idea is that if you can anticipate the flow of the game (underdog stays competitive for a while vs. the favorite takes control from the opening kickoff and never trails), you can position yourself to win either way.

This is really the only way to go if you like money. I find Betfair the best for this...

Is there any difference between scalping and arbing? Does scalping mean making a bet for future arb (it includes a risk) while arbing making the profit right now witho no risk?

A scalp is one type of arb. Middling/siding is another type of arb. Arbitrage is any situation where you buy at one price and sell at another at the same time.

Good explanation agharah1, so I guess in order to scalp you have to rely on the dog team to be competitive at least at the start in order for the live lines to drop. If the dog team starts getting destroyed right away then you are in trouble I guess.

It depends which side you take. You could also take the favorite if you think they'll dominate from the opening kickoff like Nebraska did vs. Washington last weekend. Nebraska opened at -150 to start the game but were up by 3 TDs in short order. At that point, assuming you could even find a moneyline on the game anymore, you could cover with a tiny bet on Washington in case Jake Locker started completing more than 20% of his passes. If you had 300 on Nebraska to win 200, you could wait for the price on Washington to reach something like +1000 and then bet 30 on Washington to protect your bet while still winning 170 if Nebraska holds on.
