This wasn’t a surprise. Really, it was a formality.

Three days after Sidney Wilson received his release from St. John’s — just over three months after the four-star Bronx wing committed to the Big East school — he is headed to UConn.

UConn, after all, was one of his three finalists, along with Texas. It happened fast. When St. John’s granted Wilson a full release aside from Big East schools, it knew there was a strong possibility Wilson could be headed to UConn, sources told The Post. But athletic director Anton Goff, coach Chris Mullin and his staff opted not to block UConn because they wanted to see Wilson, who has been dealing with personal issues, get his life on track and not create further distractions, a source said.

St. John’s believes there was tampering of some sort with Wilson when he was on scholarship, but doesn’t plan to investigate it. Asked for comment, Mullin referred to his original statement when Wilson decided to leave, which wished him well. Because he took classes at St. John’s this summer, Wilson will have to sit out the coming season, barring an unexpected waiver from the NCAA.
