Where are you pal? Have binders full of coaching material from clinics if you're interested

I think montana had value. I had this game capped at 4, but obviously without cherry it should be closer to 7

Texas, I go to A&M. It didn't work out here, and I am not impressed with the integrity of our new staff and program, they kind of used me and screwed me over. Trying like hell to find some connections cause thats the only way you can get into it these days.

    What kind of clinics?

Different kinds, some stuff from pro seminars and some from high school seminars. Has a lot of good drills, as well as a couple offensive sets. The shuffle cut offense is there but Idr the other one

I'd probably be interested in both. I mean, I'm fairly knowledgable about the game, just need someone to be willing to give me a chance and let me do their grunt work for a couple of years. Have a couple friends who have gotten into it, but still waiting for something to develop further.

I guess let me know if you know someone with an opening who likes guys who will work hard, but have almost zero experience (outside of 4-5 months in a college staff's office) haha.

Football, but will not say what school

I played in college at TCU, so that helped and was a big factor, since I had the connections with my coaches.

But I only used my coaches for references, I didn't have them actually get me the job. As far as getting the job, I just applied on the open postings posted at the schools website, and went from there. Didn't go to any clinics or networking events. But if you have no playing experience, you might need to get an alternate certification teaching certificate in Texas and coach high school for a bit to get experience.

Also you might be out of luck applying at the big schools, since many of the bigger schools and big name coaches handpick their GAs, usually ex-NFL players or former star players who want to get into coaching. That is why its so competitive. Realistically unless you went to the NFL or were a star college player(I was not, just a walk on who never played) your best bet is to try the lower tier programs in Division 1 like in the Sun Belt or MAC, or 1-AA or Division 2. I am not going to be at a big name program, I will say that.

Graduate Assistant positions will start being posted after the season is over, probably starting after Thanksgiving. But I started the process last summer, and won't actually start until January. Should be a 5-6 month gap between accepting the position and starting unless the positions posted in November say they start in January, but that probably won't be the case since you still have to go through the grad school application process as well which takes months

Surprised to hear that the new staff at A&M lacks integrity, but I can't stand that program and fanbase no matter who is coaching

    Interesting!

Yeah I learned at A&M that the big conference schools usually will hand pick their GA's. That is actually a lot of helpful information, thanks man. Do those smaller conference schools really typically post openings on their website? I was not aware of that. I was getting close to just writing up a bunch of letters to head coaches (like you said, probably at smaller schools) and just saying "hey, i'll do whatever it takes, I need a foot in the door and want to help such-and-such win football games". You think thats a good step?

Yeah, I was just kind of used as a gopher to come in and switch a bunch of stuff over from the old staff (playbooks, recruiting stuff). I was kind of promised some opportunities down the road, but it turned out they just said that to keep me around and eventually cut me loose. People were consistently taking my 10-hour a day work as their own and never throwing me a bone.

I'm a big A&M fan though, and I promise I'm not a jerk, so maybe that can change your perception of Aggies. Hah.

Not all schools will post the openings on their site, but many will. You will see lots of them after Thanksgiving through June. But its still probably a good idea to contact the Director of Football Operations or Athletic Director/Assistant Athletic Directors at the schools anyway

Two schools I applied and interviewed for(but am not going to) were Akron and Eastern Kentucky. One is low tier D1, the other is D-IAA. That was the general area I targetted and where I landed. I applied on the school website, then went back and forth with the coach or Director of Football Ops from there. That was the Make sure your references are good and can attest to your ability, knowledge, or work ethic.

Either way, you are going to be doing the same things at any school. Cutting video, drawing scout team plays, taking attendance, doing class checks, calling/emailing the players, hosting recruits, working long hours. I guess the benefit of being at a bigger school is that when you apply for real coaching jobs it will look more impressive on your resume, but at smaller schools its easier to be promoted from within.

At TCU we had a lot of Graduate Assistants come through when I was there, and honestly I don't know the pedigree of all of them. Some of them were college stars, but one was a walk on at Nebraska, one was a four year starter at a Division 3 school, and some I don't even know if they played in college. I think they are looking more for knowledge and dependability than what you did in college.

It's up to you, but since its a long process, I would seriously look into getting an alternate teaching certification in Texas and perhaps trying to land a high school coaching job. It can be done in a year's time, so if you get a GA position in that time frame, great, if not, you have the alternate certification to fall back on

Not sure how you can have "no contact with gamblers".
I am a marquette booster and bet on their games. Lou piniella used to go to the casino here when the cubs were in town. Etc etc

It is completely impossible to avoid contact with gamblers.

This is actually kind of funny.

I will say in regards to getting your foot in the door as some type of assistant maybe look at Junior Colleges.
Many cities have 5 or 6 JCs with football programs within the city limits.

High Schools will always take coaches but to be a coach at some schools you have to have an education certification and/or be a teacher within the school district.
