Thanks for the continued support. Do you guys remember what life was like before this disease? I seriously have a difficult time remembering how much better life was, more stress-free life was, how the little things in life were enjoyed. When we gamble, almost nothing else matters. We can kid ourselves and say that things take precedent....but do they really? Really been attempting a lot of soul searching. Sorry to be a buzzkill, I know this is March Madness, the best time of the year for many of us. I'm debating if I need to completely get away from it, or I could be in serious trouble.Comment -
You do need to get away from it. To many people gambling is a pleasant recreational activity. Of course the percentage of problem gamblers on a forum like this is much higher. However many people just bet for fun. Do you drink or do drugs recreationally? Some folks can do those thing in moderation some can not. Your last post is pretty clear bro, just stop for as long as you can. If you mess up then start again, but losing 4 months salary in two days is really rough. YUP.....when you fall into debt, you try to get it back....you need to get it back, and you don't.....you fall deeper and deeper in debt. After I complete my MBA in June, I will be under immediate pressure to find a job that pays at very least double what I get paid today. This way I can meet my deadlines to pay off debts....and maybe not have the whole situation blow up in my face. But if it does, I've come to terms that I would have to accept whatever consequences came my way, wife leaving, etc. I'm 28, and gambling runs deep in my blood. My dad was a big gambler, and went away for about a month when I was in high school to get help. He's slipped a few times since, but pretty much has control. My grandfather was a bookie and horse guy. My brother is a bookie.......it runs deep, it's in my blood....and it tends to control me. I would say I started doing prolines in Canada in high school......gambled very, very little in college, and it really ramped up about 7 years ago. It sucks so bad man.......I can't remember a Holiday where I wasn't checking my phone or tv for a score. Even though I've survived 5 days, I still think about it almost all the time, it's ridiculous. My mind just isn't right......don't even know why I'm even looking at these boards, but it's been a routine for years!Comment -

Thats a pretty difficult dynamic you just described. Children introduced to habitual gambling at a very young age ( under 9) are virtually certain to develop a problem with gambling. It's amazing you are close to your MBA, with that in front of you try your best to stay focused. Getting an MBA requires intellect and discipline, use those qualities to just get through the day, this is a rough rough week to be in your spot. Really sorry to hear about your troubles.Comment -

Just so you guys know, my 6 days ended. I made a deposit of $100
I played $100 on Delaware +14 in-game late in the 1st half.....was watching the game and thought they would hang. They were down 10 with 2 mins left. Baptiste got called for a horsesh!t technical foul on a basketball move.......those always go against me without fail. Well, she's at 14, and Delaware has ball with 1 minute left. I'm good shape, I'll get 2 possessions, Sparty will get 1. Well Delaware throws up a brutal 3.......still tied, I'm good right. Well Sparty misses a 3 ball with about 20 seconds left, and I have no idea how the ref calls a foul underneath on the rebound. Michigan St player thought it was on him, and started walking the other way. Had to get called back to shoot FT's. I thought Delaware had FT's, and 1 make I win, as Sparty would run the clock. NOPE. First FT hits the back rim, bounces 20 feet in the air, and drops. Hits the 2nd. Well Delaware gets fouled on the other end.....and the bast@rd misses one. Guys, this is small potatoes....I don't care about the money. But I fu(ked up...never should have done this.....I feel so guilty about it, it's nearly bringing me to tears, and its not the money....its my self control. And to top if off, I lose in about the worst way. Oh Man!

Don't keep beating yourself up. You made 6 days, that's great! Now just focus on the next 6 days and go past that. This is a very rough time of year to try and quit this shit. There are successful gamblers that have been through he'll before they were consistent (and disciplined) winners, but mostly a degenerate gambler will either quit for good or die unhappy.
I love betting on sports, and I won't ever quit, but over (a long) time I've become adverse to risk, more educated re money management, and accepting of the fact that gaining an edge is just HARD WORK.
i've still got a ways to go to beat the discipline side of things, but I'm getting there.

While there is good support here, there is some crazy bad advice in here, and a lot of it is from people that will be where you are in five years. I'm no psychologist but it sounds like to me you need to go to some extreme measures like canceling all your credit and debit cards and living cash only. You also need to find a serious hobby. My dad is a compulsive gambler. If you don't own up to it and fix it permanently it will end poorly. He actually has contained it and doesn't gamble any more (he's 70). If you are 28 and about to make more money you can get out of this and keep doing this cycle over and over for many years, but eventually you will end up at rock bottom and when you do you might not be 28 with a relevant MBA and a life to look forward to. My dad lost his company, the his wife, then his job, then his house. All of which didn't stop him. I tried getting him help and bailed him out a crazy amount of times. But eventually it was affecting my life and marriage so It wasn't until I told him I was done bailing him out. Handed him a check and told him it was over, I'd never give him another dime. If he ever wanted to speak to me again he had it get help. He was 60 and I made it clear he was about to be homeless, with a heart condition and no real job prospects. He actually quit. Not sure how, but he took up bowling as a hobby. Lives alone and does fine. So moral of this story? It can be beat, but the question is do you want to beat it now or wait until you have no friends, no family, and no job prospects before you do it?Comment -
Thanks yak.......great encouragement, and thanks for the sharing your personal story. I definitely want to beat it now! There's no question about it. I do have hobbies. I play competitive softball and travel the East coast and Midwest and play about 15-20 tournaments a year. That keeps me occupied and my mind clear from April to October, months I generally handle pretty well. The winter is problematic for me every season. Its amazing how difficult this is to stop. Definitely good advice, and some things to really put into perspective. It's funny that I get upset if my wife wants to take $200 to the casino.....while at that moment in time, I likely have more then that with games in progress. I really feel like I can win this battle.Comment -

Not to sound too corny but it is often the simple things in life which bring most pleasure. It is easy to overlook them when you are monitoring a screen all day [or two, or three], sweating out bets [especially with these college boneheads and the terribly poor referring] or worrying about your bankroll going south. It's always useful to take a walk or get out and do something to clear your mind and get away from the roller-coaster of sports betting. I've been way up and way down, but have managed to learn a few lessons along the way. If it's controlling your life then try and stop, it shouldn't be at the very core of your daily existence. It's funny that when you are deep in the hole and are examining every pick down to the finest detail you can't buy a winner and every break goes against you. Conversely, I find that when I am relaxed and betting well within my means that winners jump of the page often. There is no over thinking involved, I'm not attempting to find a diamond in the rough and out smart everybody else but relying on my gambling instincts.
Most will have been in a similar situation and it's a rough place to be. It's strange to watch a game without having action on, it takes some getting used to but it can be enjoyable in itself. Best of luck for the future and I hope you can straighten out everything. This lark sure ain't worth losing sleep over, or god forbid anything more serious than that. The sun shall rise tomorrow morning regardless of whether you, I or anyone else had a winning day or not, even though in the middle of the storm of crap it may not feel that way. I never quite understood it boys. If you foul down 7 with 20 seconds why wouldnt you foul down 9 with 17 seconds?? Does anyone eer think there is this huge worldwide joke and it always seems to go against you? I had oregon +6.5 and honest to christ, oregon fouls down 4 with 0.6 seconds left. But heres the kicker, not just a foul and tedhnical. 4 FTs with less then a second. Now guys, you know my story. I honestly and truly feel like their is a sick joke and it will not escape me. You guys heads would literally blow off your shoulders if youve seen how often this stuff has happened to me lately. I had a MAC game a few weeks back. Had a team at -11. Up 19 with less then a minute left. The other teams hit a 3, turnover hit a 3, miss both FTs hit a nother 3 and then miss two more FTs. The favorite won by 10.
