Boston just signs another player today

I know Danny Ainge is under fire from the Celtics top brass, fans, media, and everyone else right about now. However, I think todays signing of James Posey was absolutely dumb.

I know on paper the Celtics appear to have a playoff type contender at least, but Ainge shouldn't be focusing on building a team with players that might have 1-3 years left to go in there careers like he has been doing this offseason.

Posey agrees to two-year contract with revamped Celtics

James Posey will be playing in Boston next season alongside Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, ESPN.com has learned.

The Boston Celtics took another step in their veteran-oriented offseason overhaul Saturday by agreeing to preliminary terms on a two-year contract with the free agent forward.

Posey will make between $7 and $7.5 million over the course of the deal, although the second season is a player option. The Celtics used most of the remainder of their mid-level exception to sign Posey, who spent the past two seasons with the Miami Heat.

The nine-year veteran will be joining his fifth NBA team, having spent four seasons in Denver, one in Houston, two in Memphis and two in Miami. The defensive specialist is the third significant role player lost by the Heat to free agency this summer, joining Jason Kapono, who signed with Toronto, and Eddie Jones, who agreed to a contract with Dallas.

In addition to trades that brought Allen from Seattle and Garnett from Minnesota, Boston has signed veteran free agents Eddie House and Scot Pollard.

He's a good player, he'll help Boston. As for signing older players, they're not building for the future anymore. The time for Boston to win is now.

I think the Boston owners are just trying to fill the seats after the awful season that was last year. Its tough competing with the success of the Red Sox and Patriots. The Celtics are just trying to get some attention in the local area. And with the East being so up for grabs, they have as much chance as anyone. I dont think they are thinking about 3 years down the road.

I think James Posey is a good signing. They need role players who don't need shots. He'll play strong defense and spot up for the open 3.

Still, I don't think the C's have much of a chance with the good doctor leading them on the sidelines.

    Good signing.

Posey still plays solid defense, an area Paul and Ray are sorely lacking in, and he'll provide toughness. He'll also add insurance in case Tony Allen is slow to recover from a torn ACL.

Too bad he can't play the point.

They need to pry Sarunas off of the Warriors. He'd be a good fit as PG for them.

You guys actually think the Celtics can make a serious run in the playoffs though? I still have to question them even making them this year.

Who knows? The East blows. One key injury to any of the top teams puts them all at a serious dilemma. LeBron goes down for Cavs, forget it. Pistons with an injured Chauncey, little chance. Miami with either Shaq or Wade out? Nope. Etc.

The Celtics now have a good shot as any in the East, Dan. They should be able to battle for the 7th or 8th spot, but who knows. This is the Eastern Conference we are talking about.
