NBA Ratings Have Gone Down Drastically

The NBA appears to have a serious TV ratings problem on its hands.

SportsBusiness Journal reported the following Monday:

The drop-off is most pronounced in some of the league’s biggest markets, like New York (down 41 percent on MSG Network), Chicago (down 36 percent on NBC Sports Chicago) and Boston (down 27 percent on NBC Sports Boston). Ratings for Bulls games in Chicago are at their lowest point in at least 13 years as the team has struggled on the court with one of the NBA’s worst records.

The local ratings story mirrors a national trend that has seen sluggish TV numbers for NBA games so far this season. National games are down 18 percent on TNT and 17 percent on NBA TV. ABC is down 3 percent, and ESPN is flat.

It’s also worth noting that Cavaliers games are down 56 percent since LeBron took his talents to Los Angeles, according to the same report. The Lakers have seen a big jump. That’s about the only part of this report that actually makes a lot of sense. Obviously, the ratings were going to tank in Cleveland and go up in L.A. following LeBron’s free agency decision.

As for the rest of the league, it’s an absolute disaster. They’re down on three of four networks, and just even on ESPN.

I’m not sure how much worse it could get. A couple weekends ago, a college game between Duke and Virginia crushed a national NBA broadcast on ABC. The same NBA game between the Thunder and Rockets got beat by the debut of the AAF. (RELATED: Alliance Of American Football Beats Pro Golf And The NBA In TV Ratings)

That should have been a pretty good indication that the NBA was in big trouble.

I honestly don’t know why the NBA ratings are so hampered. LeBron moving out west, which means half the country is asleep when his games start, could have something to do with it. I seriously don’t have a clue.

Maybe people are just losing interest in the NBA because we kind of all just expect the Warriors to win the title every year. There isn’t a ton of competition these days.

They need to shorten the game. Half of the game is complete shit ball.
They should change it to best of 5, 10 minute rounds.

Tonights game a perfect example. 6ers jumped out to a 10 pt lead and has and will remain the same til late in the 4th when Thunder finally throw in the towel.

When was the last rivarly in the NBA? There’s no excitement anymore. No defense. The 90’s and early 2000’s were so much better to watch.

Defense has become illegal and yet ratings are down -whadayaknow maybe fans do like pure basketball. Maybe they get sick of teams putting up 140pts in a track meet, James Harden going for 50+ every odd day, and average players putting up numbers like all time greats.

NBA has become a laughing stock for basketball people. Hopefully Silver sees money elsewhere and hops jobs.

I used to follow the NBA religiously, cap it, and win more often than not.

Knew it like the back if my hand.

But lost much interest as the game changed.

I still follow but don't live & breathe it as before since I don't care for the product as much.

Too many options. I love Hockey, but only tune in when I get an alert that a game is going into OT or a shoot-out. Then I'll watch. If I really want to watch a game, I wait until the next day when the NHL Network shows the abbreviated version.

Are all sports on tv down the same percentage as the NBA? I don’t think so.

You cant have a quarter of your league tank and expect good ratings. Most NBA markets only care about their teams and not the league. That’s one big difference between them and the NFL.

Seems every sport is pricing themselves out of the market. Why pay for tickets, parking, hot dogs and beers when you can stay home and watch on tv? And there isn't a drunk azzhole three feet behind me yelling at the right fielder who is 300 feet away.

    Things change.
In the 70s, you had to either get up early on a weekend, or not be able to get on a public tennis court.
Drive around any town USA now. Courts are a barren wasteland.

Before Magic/LJB, the NBA was in deep trouble. Drugs were rampant. Some teams were in jeoproady of folding.
They have had a good run.

Ticket prices. No matter what is happenning with the economy, or peoples disposable income, the owners continue to gouge its fan base.

It is going to be very interesting when some of these TV contracts are up. With the exception of the NFL, there will be some serious pushback from the networks bidding stupid $$$ for the rights to games nobody is watching live anymore.

It said in the OP that isn't true

College basketball and AAF pummeled NBA

Of course overall tv viewership is down but NBA more so. Maybe it's karma for gouging cable subscribers who never watch the NBA but are the ones paying these insane player salaries. Like someone earlier said, it will be very interesting to see what happens when the tv contracts are up.
