    First WNBA forfeit ever

    https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/07/s...er=rss&emc=rss

For the first time in history, a team has forfeited a game.
The league ruled Tuesday that the Las Vegas Aces would get a loss for their game against the Washington Mystics that was canceled when the Aces players decided not to play because of concerns about their health and safety after more than 25 hours of travel.
The Aces needed more than a day to get to Washington from Las Vegas because of flight delays and cancellations. By the time the team reached its hotel it was 3:45 p.m. Friday — about four hours before the scheduled tip-off. The Aces players talked things over and spoke by phone with the union Friday. They called the league to say they did not want to play.
The league said it “worked extensively” with both teams to find a “workable solution.” The W.N.B.A. added it delayed the start of the game until 8 p.m. to give the Aces as much time as possible after their arrival.

considering they drain millions from the NBA each year, they really should.

NBA's form of welfare, keeping female basketball players employed in the US.

Same thing with female tennis players. They think they deserve to be paid as much as the men, even though they generate less revenue.

SBR used to promote a handicapper who claimed he researched menstrual cycles and made his picks based on that.

Not kidding. They did an interview with the guy.

Just Wow, no reschedule, a forfeit.

I thought the WNBA approved the cancellation of the game, which is why I thought that it was crazy, unheard of that they would let them cancel.

    Set a terrible precedent.

But, alas, it wasn't approved after all.

    Unreal.

Aces are still not mathematically eliminated even after forfeit

    Plus it affects Washington's seeding.

    So yes, it had implications.

Cause they don't understand how business works, that's why.. Obviously they don't go to WNBA games and check the low ticket prices and empty arenas... WNBA brings in no revenue and draws very little interest that's why.... League could fold in time.. Tax write off loss for the NBA is what this league is good for right now..

The WNBA steals from the NBA who steals from cable subscribers

They both are getting way more than they should

The WNBA has been around for over 20 years and has never come close to turning a profit. Very little revenue, plenty of expenses.

    David Stern had two crusades:

    1)The WNBA.
    2)Anti-gambling.

I guess Adam Silver told him he could choose one and he'd continue it and Stern chose the WNBA over his anti-gambling crap (Silver went against his predecessor and supported gambling).

If WNBA players were paid based on the revenue generated, they'd be making less than minimum wage.

Instead, they get paid about $75,000 on average. In return, they play basketball for three months.

But they constantly cry about how they should make more.

Its one thing if the team said it was unfair, but the health argument is bogus.

I think I am the only one that will agree with the women.
    Circumstances were excessive

Criticism shouldn't go towards players, should go to the airlines, imho.
A six hour flight turned into 25?

How do they travel? Charter, regular coach? Some college basketball teams do not always travel together. Few at a time on passenger airliners.

WNBA does not allow chartered flights (because few owners feel like spending millions on that when the teams lose millions annually) so they fly commercial.

Yes, sometimes airlines have issues (sometimes out of their control, like weather), but these lazy players are getting paid well for a 40 minute basketball game. They were there and refused to play.

Even the starters play 25-30 minutes. That's so difficult?

Cyclists get paid less and those guys are doing it for a month (each stage far more difficult than a short basketball game) straight in the Tour de France.

The team shouldn't have to pay these players if they arrive and then refuse to play. It would've been a big deal for LV to make the playoffs.

Ever day thousands of people go on with scheduled meetings after delayed flights, little to no sleep, and various other circumstances, but these girls can't play 40 minutes of basketball and get wildly overpaid for it

Most of those guys have probably never been to a WNBA game in their life id wager a guess.

We always hear that lame ass argument that they dont get enough publicity, with the way feminisim has taken over, dont they realize if the NBA could sell the WNBA they would have after 20 years, this is the NBA"s money being invested after all.Theyd probably lose more in advertising then it was worth.

WNBA teams often give away tickets and still never come closing to filling arenas.

I've met plenty of fans of the major men's sports but I have literally never met one WNBA fan (or if they were, they wouldn't admit it).

The big women's college programs (most notably UConn) generate far more interest than most WNBA teams.

Unlike womens' tennis, volleyball, or soccer, basketball does not attract many easy on the eye players. If the WNBA did it would go a long way in generating interest from men and even more interest from dykes

Yeah, Taurasi has played in Russia for years. She once took off an entire WNBA season to "rest" for the Russian season.

Over there, the leagues also lose money, but the oligarchs pay for the teams to curry favor with Putin.

These WNBA women are lucky they don't have to bus it across America to play games like back in the day.. They are complaining about a delayed flight geeez..

Entitlement issues.. These women should be thankful they can play ball for a living period.. You can live on $75,000 a year with full med and dental coverage..

It's not like they play as many games or as often as the NBA players do either every year.. Short season, game every 3 or 4 days.. It's a joke...
