Not to mention it's on scale. 20 years ago guys were getting 20mil/year plus. so to think 20 years later that wouldn't be doubled, especially with the tv deals. There's only 450 people in the world good enough to be in the league in a season. and out of that only about 250 plays significant minutes. Jordan made 33 mil in 97. top players are just getting to that number. Even Pat Ewing made over 20 mil that year.

while scottie pippen was the 6th highest paid player on the Bulls coming in after Kukoc, Rodman, Luc Longley, and even Ron Harper at only 2.7 mil. He signed a bad contract and the bulls were tough on not renegotiating even after he helped the team win 5 rings up to that point. that was cruel.

A few things on these high NBA wages....

    1. Clearly it shows when a few players leave a team... the main player stays with that team... because he knows he's going to GET A MAX DEAL. Smart on his part.

    2. NBA owners knew this day would come... but by the same token... it was agreed upon. Owners must be making a killing in revenue. That's why they okay'd it. I believe the popularity of the NBA is increasing.

    3. NHL players have to be looking at these deals... and saying fuk me?

Another thing we should understand is that a million bucks in the 90's is now about 10+ million currently. These dudes survive on 1-5yr contracts in which their career might be over with an injury/ health issues. Imagine had Bosh had that clotting problem in his 1st yr in the NBA? His life would've been over which is why the NCAA's ripping off these kids most of which won't make the NBA cut. Guys like Lebron/ Durant, Curry and Green have personal chefs, nutritians, personal trainers at home even in the offseason. And franchise players like Lowry going to get paid more. He & Derozan are how we identify the raptors atm.

you know the salary cap is based on revenue the nba gets? so its just allocating money earned into payroll... so that literally makes 0 sense...
why would owners make all the money to sit on their ass but the actual athletes who bring in all the viewers get payed nothing? this isnt slavery this is called athletic sports where the ATHLETES who play and bring views get paid like they should...

What I'm against is knowing its prolly Cavs vs GSW in the finals again next year. . . but hey, at least Russ got some help
Yeah those fans that make them this money in the first place, those poor players.

Can't believe the money these guys are getting

Lowry and others going to be making over 400k a game, or 12k a minute dribbling a basketball around. No real chance of life threatening injury, just bouncing and throwing a ball. Can't believe this type of money is sustainable, NBA isn't that good or popular

Us gamblers don't care about anything but our bet but there are so many loser fans who waste so much money on this shit. Just go to a game and see how much people are spending.

because less than 5% are good enough to lead a team to a title. People can do the David West thing and give up 20 million dollars in last two years. one season to chase in San Antonio and this last season in Golden St. But most retired players say they would never give up that kind of money. That's generational wealth given up just to be a bench player on a team and get a ring. In 20 years, no one will remember David West was on the warriors, but having that extra 20 million would be pretty cool.

Yeah maybe David West was smart and saved some of his money while he got paid well and was robbing his employers. Let's not forget rings are always the number 1 priority especially when you have played for a long time and any player with a brain should have saved something from years of getting paid. Not everyone is an Antoine Walker

on a smaller scale, his moves were weaker than Durant. He went to the Spurs thinking he would get one after they added Aldridge, and then Durant signs with Golden State, he switches again. I respect guys like Horry that have rings and was a contributing factor. I guess the euphoria and bragging rights are worth 20 million dollars to him. I'm sure he is ok financially, but 20 mil is 20 mil. would you take the ring instead?

    what does overpaid mean?

in this world, in an arm's length transaction, you get paid what you are worth.

if a non-related party is willing to pay you a salary, that means you are worth that money.

Correct me if I'm wrong, which I may be, but these big salaries are a result of new tv contracts. People who are paying these contracts by paying for cable are indirectly paying for this NBA shit probably without even watching it. So the vast majority of people who are actually paying for it don't even know they are.

That isn't getting paid what you are worth, that's a scam. My point in post 50 is that isn't sustainable any more than wealth redistribution and socialism is sustainable.
