      Kevin McHale vs. Dirk.
McHale always took the other teams best forward (After Cedric moved on) allowing Larry to play more team/help D.
Take longevity out of the equation and just take best 10 years.
I realize Dirk is closer to Larry Joe Bird and McHale closer to Timmy Duncan,
but Dirk was always the #1 scoring option on his team. McHale never was.

I just think Dirk top 20 is a stretch, and depending on the make-up of the team, I would take McHale over Dirk
even though he gets absolutely no all-time love.
    • Sorry about the size of the stats. no clue how to format.

Depends on your measurement criteria. Sure there were guys more talented than him who had better stats (over a shorter time period). However you have to give Dirk his credit on longevity because of his hard work and dedication to his work. He's definitely top 20 in that criteria which means his total career numbers are better than those who didn't have his commitment.

Plus the guy was an awesome teammate and a great guy for his city. He will always be loved in Dallas.

wouldn't say "much better", just much different.... while I was never a big fan of herman munster (hated his ass, as a matter of fact), he was almost exclusively a low post player... by design of the celtics offense..... dirk's game is more outside oriented.....

    but herman had game:

one of the best up and under games of all time

    6. Kevin McHale

    Teams
    Boston Celtics (1980-1993)

    Honors
    Seven-time All-Star, All-NBA selection (1986-87), two-time Sixth Man of the Year, six-time All-D selection, Hall of Fame

    Championships
    3 (1981, 1984, 1986)

    Career stats
    17.9 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 1.7 BPG, .554 FG%

    The player
Legendary for his footwork and low-post moves, McHale is a legit top-10 power forward even though he came off the bench for more than half of his career games. -- Adande

His turnaround shot was deadly accurate and unblockable, but his up-and-under move will always be the one burned in my brain. -- Doolittle
Guarding McHale in the post was aptly referred to as "The Torture Chamber." -- Adams
How many times have we heard Charles Barkley say that McHale, with those unforgettably long arms and that clever post game, was the toughest opponent he ever faced? Not much else needs to be said. -- Stein
DIRK ranked 3 in this greatest power forward ESPN poll.
Ahead of Barkley, Garnett and McHale. Behind Timmy and Malone.
Anyone who thinks these guys are not all in the same ball park is either too young or a definite homer.

When I think of McHale, all I see in my mind are flailing elbows as he was acting like he got fouled. Guess I need to watch videos of him to get a better perspective of his game.

Yeah LB, you have to be over 45 to appreciate anyone from that era.
Played an entire Finals with a broken foot (87??) which definitely shortened his career.
60/85 that one year he averaged 26 PPG all the while guarding the #1 forward.

His stats can`t be compared to most of these guys as he was 6th man for 1/2 his time, and had to always defer to LB and share the rock.

Some good points by you guys. Hard to compare, different games. Comparing both on post, different games there too, both monsters, McHale could shoot over you or make you look stupid with up and unders and various ways of getting to the basket. Dirk in post mostly shooting over you or fading back. Dirk killer from midrange and 3, McHale good from midrange, didnt shoot 3's, not his fault that just wasnt the game of PF's during the time and wasnt something that was developed. Rebounding, McHale better, Dirk may averaged more, but McHale was better at offensive rebounding, defensive rebounds easier to get. Defensively, McHale by a good bit.

Funny how you start a thread that gives proper credit to the current player, Dirk, but
all the crap is spewed on the former, McHale.

I would think about half the GM`s today would take Dirk, the other 1/2 take McHale depending on need.

JJ, McHale would still be a force down low today. Very unique moves.

Dirk revolutionized the era as the prototypical stretch 4 of today's standards back in 01 and 02 but better than the birdman?! That's a bit of a stretch.

The dunking Deutchman had one of the best finals performances ever though, he beat the best and 2nd best players at the time in lebron and wade on a stacked miami squad with a bunch of AARP card guys well past their primes.

McHale was great but he didn't change the game like the 7 foot schnitzel did

    dirk a unique talent indeed.....

being a rockets fan, hated him due to all the no-touch fouls he got simply by floppin'.....

small sample of Dirk at his best..... knew to head for the floor the nano-second he knew his shot was off....

but have to acknowledge his great skillz, and agree with the sentiment that he's a first-class guy and a great spokesman for Big D --- he'd never have to buy his own drink in any bar in the metroplex.....

Donker, how frustrating was it for u in h town to never get a shot at the title with tmac and Yao back in the early and mid 2000s? Defintely thought rockets were gonna make at least a western conference semis with that duo

very frustrating, but at least I'll always have this:

hearing mcgrady talk and take us through the moment, how he put the team on his back, i think he may have retired exclusively to Madden Football.....

ps... after watching that vid of mcgrady, I must note I haven't seen a look like that on Pop's face since,.....

well, other than on election night nov, 2017.....

There are some studs in the the top 15-20 class. Guys like The Mailman, The Admiral and Charles Barkley. So I wouldn't put him in the top 20. In the 20-25 class is probably more like it with Kevin Garnett and Scotty Pipen.
