New Orleans Pelicans vs. Dallas Mavericks // Feb 25

Timely additions

The basketball world will have one eye on the New Orleans Pelicans (23-35) and Dallas Mavericks (22-35) match this evening. Normally a match between a pair of bubble teams wouldn’t be a hot topic, but both these squads made the two biggest trades during the trade deadline period.

Family first

It may be considered “old news” considering it didn’t happen on the trade deadline, but the impact that DeMarcus Cousins will have on this lineup should be evident against the Mavs. The Pelicans ran into a buzzsaw in Cousins’ first game and got blown out by the Houston Rockets. However, having settled in a bit more, Cousins should be a big difference maker against another team that is battling to make the playoffs.

The additions of Cousins is that much more significant if you consider the amount of teams battling for the final spot in the Western Conference. From position 8-13, the six teams are are separated by 3.5 games or less, and the Mavs round out the group. The Pelicans have won three out of their last four away games, which is a pleasant trend that fans hope continues considering the team has been awful on the road with a record of 9-19 this season.

A new horse in the stable

The Mavs were jealous of all the attention that the Pelicans were getting so they decided to make the biggest splash on trade deadline. They acquired Nerlens Noel from the Philadelphia 76ers in a shocking trade. Noel was the sixth overall pick in the 2013 entry draft and will make his Mavs debut tonight.

Noel, 22, adds to the bundle of young talent that the Mavs have acquired and the buzz around the team should be contagious. The Mavs need a spark more than anyone, especially if they want to stay with the pack of teams contending for a spot. They have lost three games in a row and are 3-7 in their last 10. The good news is that they are at home. They’ve played .500 ball this season at home (14-14) whereas they are terrible on the road (8-21).

The Final Breakdown

Time to see what Cousins can do. Dallas is coming off a loss last night and are 1-11 in their last 12 on the back end of a B2B.
