John Calipari Turned Down $80 Million From Cleveland Cavaliers

He would have been Cavaliers' coach and team president. He opted to stay at Kentucky, where he signed seven-year, $52 million extension.

Because he can read the writing on the wall
Know where and from whom the Cavs owner made all his money
Not that there is anything wrong giving predatory loans to the Urban inner city
But this owner is in the sights

Marc Stein @ESPNSteinLine Follow As we just discussed on @SportsCenter, I'm told money details in Cavs' pitch to John Calipari were closer to $80 million range over 10 years

Can't cheat to get players in the NBA really and he would be in Cleveland where no one wants to go. That would be fun to watch him get exposed though.

Calipari doesn't want any part of the NBA. No matter what the # is. He just used all this for leverage.

True, forgot all about his time in the NBA. Then the guy gets in trouble everywhere and just moves on and keeps doing it. Money talks, he's built for college and selling promises to kids and their families.

Any decent coach would take Cleveland to the playoffs with that roster. Irving Waiters Deng Thompson Varajeou and a solid bench led by Jack. Are you kidding me? That's was a good squad and they couldn't even get to .500.

Good that they didn't give Calipari all that money.

Yeah but could he be a winning coach in the NBA with Cleveland?

In college, he lives and dies by almost every play. You can't do that in the NBA and be able to win consistently. The best coaches in the NBA are the ones that don't let their emotions get in the way. That's why college is a joke. These players, coaches are all so emotional. And at the end of the day, the players and teams all suck. Even the top guys in the country can't start on most NBA teams. Less than 1% of D1 kids will even make the NBA. These kids cry, shout, bang their chest, and the product they put out there is shit. If Calipari got to the NBA, I think it'd be a huge wake up call for him. He'd have to completely change everything about his coaching.

As much as I hate on the guy and want to agree with this, he does teach a solid dribble drive motion. It's not that difficult but no coach just rolls the ball out. His offense is relatively complex, but he does have the best players for it and that's where he succeeds. When you have the top kids in the country it doesn't really matter what offense you teach but he does bring in the right players for his system and gets them to figure it out pretty quickly.

I think it's rough being a college coach because it really is about the players so that's why we see the same teams up there every year. If not, it's a senior laden team who has worked together to become a top team.

Some coaches like Roy Williams get the players and can't coach worth a damn though. I respect Cal in the sense that he takes young kids and wins when they don't have the experience or basketball IQ of older players. It's not easy taking a bunch of teenagers though they're the the best of the bunch, then winning a championship along with 3 final fours in 4 years.

The real take away from all of this, at least for me, is how desperate the Cavs are to get LeBron back.

Calipari, WWW and LeBron are all pretty well known acquaintances. This, IMO, was a clear play for Bron.

Absolutely, and now this makes me think LeBron is never going back to Cleveland...well not just this. I thought he might but I don't think his people would ever allow him to play for a small market team like that ever again.

Exactly. Why would any successful college coach go to the NBA? This is why NBA teams are hiring TV commentators and point guards who just retired. No one decent wants to do it. They're desperate for lighting in a bottle when it comes to hiring a good coach. It's that or recycle failing coaches. (D'antoni, Brown, etc)

Shitty coach, wouldn't have lasted 3 years. He can recruit, he's a god in inbred country. Why the fukk would you mess a good thing up? Cleveland is a shit hole. Might have to look at Deemer. He made the right call.

Failure with the Cavs would ruin the guy. At Kentucky as long as you make it to final 4 or even elite eight people are happy. If Cavs don't win it all this year, it's a failure.

Yeah, you're right, they probably only have to make it to Eastern Conference Finals this year and everyone will give the Cavs (Lebron) a pass and consider it a successful season.

Sorry I spoke out of turn.
