Shouldn't you have to be older than the players you are coaching?

Butler can get some another youngin with solid credentials. (Hell, Howland might be a perfect fit - although not young or hip). However, Stevens was already proven as one of the better minds in the college basketball ranks, set to inherit whatever blue blood he wanted.

That later part is still a very real possibility. He could know exactly the time frame K or Roy or Pitino are working on, and is just making some very solid coin and NBA hookups. Having an NBA background does wonders on the recruiting trail.

Unless he starts winning big and fast, it's very reasonable to believe he will be back. Hell, your boy failed miserably, and he is a very solid coach.

Still, agreed - this really does suck.

Tough for Butler but there really is no one more deserving. Great for Stevens.

Didn't he just sign a huge contract with Butler not too long ago (could be wrong)?

I don't think there are too many things more worthless than a college coaches contract.

If the school is smart, or big, they have massive buyout clauses. (See Alford at UCLA's current debacle with New Mexico). Celtics just tore up their team, what they need is a good coach - and could easily pay whatever.

I liked Stevens at Butler. I think the fact that Boston is going young will be good for him. Doubt they would have made this move if KG and Pierce stayed. Should be an interesting season for Boston next year. Last time I checked all they really have is Rondo and Jeff Green. And word around Boston is they're shopping Rondo, possibly to Detroit.

Don't assume that Brad Stevens only knows Princeton type offenses. Most often success from mid-majors are due to that style of play, as it helps lessen the talent gap that exists between high-majors and mid-majors.

I believe he is a very smart guy, and outside of his defensive scheme's, which have been rumored to take years to understand - don't seem all that set in stone.

Even then, I would say he runs a typical man-to-man D with ability to switch often and late. Hell, even the princeton offense and varients of have been used to some success in the NBA as is. I think it nullifies the biggest assets of Rondo, but it's not an impossible scheme to carry over. It's a very fundamental way of playing, and is probably a very solid way to deal with a young team.

I have no clue if he will succeed. Hell, what is succeed now that Boston has taken itself out of contention for at least a couple years. If he fails, I doubt it's for lack of coaching acumen.

they will be okay in the FUTURE they got 9 draftpicks in the next 5 years plus will probably get a few more wherever they ship rondo to thats why they signed him to a SIX year contract. I say if there patient with him and get parker and maybe one of those kentucky players next year they'll have a good start.

He's gonna make more money in a couple years than he could in ten in college and if it doesn't work out then he comes right back to a big time college. Seems like it's worked out okay for the last two ncaa champ coaches.

And I also guess that's why he hasn't entertained offers from other schools the last few years?

It probably wasn't a secret he dreamed of the NBA.

The real question is what NCAA school does he end up at in 2015? I'm all in on Wisconsin.

Bad move... I bet against Butler a lot over the Stevens years and if you ever watched Butler games most of the time they beat other teams by a small margin and just scrapped their way by other teams, which works in the college game but coaching in the NBA now is just being an ego manager and nothing more. It's all about having a front office that can put together enough good players and then have a coach who can manage their attitudes.

Great move. He will be the next coach Cal. Colleges will knock themselves over to get Stevens once the NBA chews him up and spits him out. As long as he doesn't get choked by one of his players he will always be welcomed back to the college ranks. PJ Calisimo, not so much.

I saw this movie once before I think it was called the "Pitino Era"...wake me in 3 years when it's over. As a Celtics former season ticket holder, I am not happy.
