Miami Suspends Seven Players Before Bowl Game Vs. West Virginia

The Hurricanes suspended seven football players ahead of Wednesday’s Russell Athletic Bowl, where Miami is set to meet the West Virginia Mountaineers. The Hurricanes made the announcement on Saturday in a short statement that only said the suspensions came for the student-athletes “for failing to meet the standards of expectations set by the program.”

Among the suspended players are wide receiver O’Juan Carney, tight ends Jovani Haskins and Michael Irving Jr., defensive linemen Tyreic Martin and Gerald Willis III, and defensive backs Jeff James Jr. and Cedrick Wright. The only player who would’ve likely made an impact in the game was Wright, who proved a key component for special teams.

Wright was previously suspended for a game in November because he had “not been a model citizen,” a source told the Miami Herald at the time. The university did not make clear the exact reason for the suspension.

The new round of suspensions come just two days after Miami’s offensive coordinator dispelled the rumor that the team was full of “thugs and criminals.”

“One of the biggest surprises was how great our kids are as people,” Thomas Brown, who came to the team from Georgia this season, told the Herald. “Coming down here so many people told me so many negative things about the players in Miami, whether it was from a recruiting standpoint or the guys we have on our roster. There have just been very few issues.”

He continued: “When people talk about our team having thugs and criminals, I think that’s idiotic. We have plenty of stories about guys going into the community and sharing some of their experiences with the youth — not about football, but about life.”
