Clay in general really. That guy just dominates on that surface for some reason.

It's not weird at all. Spanish players are known throughout history for excelling on clay. The French is the only clay surface of all the majors. The clay slows down the ball and allows very hight bounces with topspin. Topspin, heavy shots is Nadal's game.

There are also much longer rallies on clay and Nadal is very quick, athletic, out there. Running down balls, hitting them back with power, spin, everything. His game is totally suited for clay.

Of course, when he plays Fed on grass it's a totally different story.
The grass makes the ball slide and stay low, this gives Nadal problems against Fed, as evidenced by the 4-set white wash by Fed over Nadal at the last Wimbledon.

Nadal has not done well at the Australian and US Open (both hard courts). It's because the hard court is a faster court than clay and the spin who puts get deadened and is easier to return by opponents.

None of this is very surprising if you understand the differences in each surface.
