I don't give a fukk what the dictionary says.

If you cannot stop your opponent from scoring points against you, how the fukk is that a sport? Attack and defense are the foundation of any true sport.

Golf, darts, bowling, and cheerleading are all not sports because you are simply playing against yourself and hoping you, by yourself, do better than someone else.

Tennis, basketball, MMA, and baseball are all sports because each side has the ability to completely stop their opponent from scoring.

If you can't see that simple difference then there's no point having the conversation.

That is a contest, not a sport. If you cannot stop other teams from scoring, how is it sport?

Yes. All races are just contests with no real time scoring. You could argue that in a race you can cut people off and stop them from advancing but we all know that's bullshit. At the end of the day you're in a lane and you're trying to do your best personal time with no real influence from other competitors.

    sport

    [spawrt, spohrt] Show IPA

noun1.an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.

It doesn't matter if you don't agree with the definition or not. People who are much smarter than you know the definition, and they don't need to argue semantics.

so youre saying it IS a sport?

because cheerleading is not often of a competitive nature

in fact cheerleading was not created to be competitive at all

    it's not a sport

No because the competitors involved are not simultaneously playing. If you have to take turns then you might as well be playing a board game.

Cheerleading itself is not a sport. Competitive cheerleading (where squads compete against others in national tournaments) is a sport.

Your local high school cheerleaders cheering on a Friday night = not a sport
The Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders working on the sidelines on Sunday = not a sport
UCA or NCA competitions = is a sport

What the hell does it matter anyway? If I can't bet on it, then it doesn't concern me.

Going by a dictionary definition is lazy and simple minded. If you don't think it matters don't come into the thread and post a fukking quote from an online dictionary, you fukk.

But see, the dictionary definition IS the definition. It's not open for interpretation. It doesn't matter what your opinion on the subject is. It is what it is. If you disagree with the definition, that's your own issue. You're wrong.

Singing can be considered an athletic activity

    athletic (æθˈlɛtɪk)
    adj
    1. physically fit or strong; muscular or active

It definitely requires 'skill or physical prowess'.

And when you're on 'American Idol' it's competitive.

American Idol is a sport, ladies and gentlemen!!!

hate to burst your bubble but dictionaries change all the time....and sometimes it's because definitions are still subjective

but that's not the point here....the point is that cheerleading is not a sport....in any form

just because they move from the sideline of a real sport to the stage with judges doesn't make it any different

Yeah? Tell me the last time the definition of the word 'sport' has changed.

Regardless, I direct you to this:

    http://espn.go.com/high-school/story...contact-sport/

A Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled that cheerleading is indeed a sport. Just face it - you're wrong. The very definiton of the word proves you wrong, and a court of law has also proven you wrong. Just give it up already.

In that definition it says hunting is a sport. I guess if you are hunting with a bow it requires skill and physical ability but if you are hunting with a rifle or shotgun anyone can do it. How hard is it to shout a deer with a scope? Are you telling me that rednecks are athletes?

whats funny is that oxford and merriam-webster define the word sport differently

im sorry that you cant make an obvious subjective judgment and think for your self

based on the above definition you'd agree that dancing with the stars is a sport? it fits the definition to a T

    ad hominem.

I don't need to think for myself when the word has been defined quite some time ago. It isn't up for interpretation. There are no judgments to make. It's pretty black and white.
