it was the jocks fault in the santa anita derby, and its tough to blame gomez in a 20 horse field, but he couldve shot out to the right a little leaving there try to give himself some room..

He had no shot in the derby -- willie shoe couldn't have helped.

Santa Anita Derby was all the jock's fault.

Agreed, SA was Jocks fault, but drawing the 1 in a sloppy 20 horse field. Nothing you could do there.

He was done after Supersaver cut over to the rail in four strides and every horse coming in towards the rail.

If he'd gotten out of the gate half a jump sooner, he might have gotten to the rail and Super Saver would have been next to him, in the 2 path, and when they passed under the wire the first time he would have had far fewer horses in front of him. I'm not saying this would have made any difference at the end, but it probably would have made for a far cleaner trip than what he got.

There is NO choice but to be within the top 3 positions going into the first turn from the 1 hole. Even if you use your horse much more than you want you save a LOT of ground being on the rail.

I agree that Lookinatlucky would have had a better chance if he was sent extra hard early then it would have been clear of a lot of horses. It would have been a question of how much left in the tank for the wire.

he either needed to send hard or drop back, the worse thing is when they are in between leaving from the rail, id rather start at the back and made a gradual move, then be in the middle and get checked back like he did, he lost a lot of momentum and Gomez wont say it but he knew the race was over right then and there

The rail for the Derby is one of the worst positions to be in as the field breaks left essentially cutting the red saddle cloth off. The tactic to counter this is to shoot-out from break, establish position or to drop back then pick them off one by one. The connections always discuss how to run the race with the riders and sometimes, it turns out to be pilot error.
