    JBEX or mikemca

or anyone else willing to help. Do you use Past Performance Sheets as part of your arsenal and if so can you purchase on line. Please be easy on me. Just starting to try and learn the horses Also how important is it to be at the track to see the horses live, up close and in person? Many question to follow I'm sure.

I'been using brisnet premium pp's for a few months now
and they're $1/day..there are more expensive ones but they have enough information for what I do..prior to that was using the drf for over 30 years but brisnet's a lot less expensive..was using thorograph because they were giving them away free this week...they're normally $25/track with a discount if you buy 3 or more tracks in a day ($50)

    drf.com
    brisnet.com
    thorograph.com

I don't go to the track 99.5% of the time so can't observe them up close..even if i did wouldn't matter as that's not something I'm familiar with at all

So if I click on tomorrows Gulf stream Park folder at Brisnet, I get every race for Sunday or just one race with those horses? I told you I'm green Also do you stay or choose one particular track over the other? Are some tracks easier to handicap?

If you are just starting with the ponies check out STR"s thread here on SBR. A wealth of info. And if you purchase the Gulfstream Park PP's from Brisnet you get all the races for that particular day. GL.

they're all challenging..prefer middle rung to top tracks vs the small ones although I will play the cheapies on occasion

Thanks guys for the info. Any and all pointers are appreciated. I have started reading that thread Easy-Rider 66 but sometimes I get lost with some of the terms and jargon. Have to stop and Google I've been watching several of you guys pick and I'm very impressed with your knowledge of the sport. I'm going to order some PP's and pick a few without wagering and see what I can learn. Many thanks.

a good book on the subject that covers a wide expanse of the game "betting thoroughbreds in the 21st century " by steve davidowitz..it's in the third edition now and would be a great introduction to things for you ..highly recommend

Hey Taylor: Playing the horses is a fun game, but a losing Proposition for most. It's real tough game to beat long term. If you learn enough the best approach imo is to play tournaments on a site Like Derby Wars/Horse Tourneys.com. You can play for as little as a $1 on Derby Wars.

I'll check that out. My sportsbook allows me to play the races for as low as a 2.00 but the odds don't change live as they do when your watching the live streams from the tracks. Speaking of loosing propositions.... What about the bets such as the trifectas daily doubles and such. Are those like the prop bets for craps. Do they lure you in with the big payouts but eat your bankroll for dessert or are they something that should be considered for all races?

there's nothing wrong with those bets... the take is higher but there are advantages to be had also.. I'd stick to nuts and bolts learning the handicapping first

Well I followed Gulfstream Park all day and purchased the PP's. I did win a couple of shows but the rest I really sucked at!! Hoping to go back thru and look at PP's and see what was different from the winners and who I was on (I hope that gives me some insight) Also out of all the info on the PP's what percent do you look at and take in to account for your picks. I know in str's thread he and others say some of the things they wouldn't look at or pay attention to. I guess it all comes down to individual beliefs?

one days results mean nothing whether you're a novice or advanced player..I'd focus on learning the fundamentals rather than wagering right away. .Get that book or another one that explains the game..it's a long process that takes time...I try to determine if the horse is capable of a good effort vs today's foes by looking at his speed figures, today's distance, class and surface, where he is in his form cycle ,race setup, why the trainer is running the horse in this spot..that covers a lot of it ..

No money. Just picks. 1.00 for the PP's I think is pretty cheap education. I'm ordering the book today. Do you ever find yourself leaning toward a certain stable. Do stables have trends or do some produce more winners than others? Also on wagering. Do you bet the same unit on each race or is there criteria where you should bet small or increase wager amount? Again I appreciate your input.

yeah buck/day is a cheap education..I don't play and just pick (except on big race days) as most know in here..I look for horses and stables don't factor a lot into my decisions..if I like a horse from a good or bad or anywhere in between stable I'd play ..problem with playing top stables and jockeys is that's what everyone's doing so no value...I end up spreading it around by just playing the horse I like which I think is a good thing overall..Betting is not an easy topic to explain
in a short time. .give you one example. .if I bet 10 win on a 5-1I'd bet more than 5 win on a 10-1..I don't want to just equalize hitting the 10-1 so might have 7 or 8 win on him. ...if I really liked the 5-1 maybe I'd up the bet to 15 ..obviously a lot more to it than that but I'll leave it there for now

One more question and I'll quit bothering you......... for a while. When you make a pick of one horse do you bet to win or win place or win place and show or does it depend on each individual race. I read if you think he's going to win then you bet across. Is that correct? I'm going to bury my nose in reading material now!

I never bet show..win/place or if I like a double digits odds horse I'll play him in 2nd spot in exactas with 1 or 2 of the lowest odds horses on top ..generally good value when you get a price on the bottom in exactas and that's where they're most likely to finish anyway...if you want to ask me something every 2 or 3 days that's fine..don't mind

Team Taylor. Try watching races. Not just the ones you play ......but all of them. . You can pick up a lot of info. .horses getting into trouble. ...horses with a ton of run....watch replays. On my thread they are just mostly follow ups. ...check it out. .watching is a big factor

Funny you mention that. I noticed two races that a horse acted like it was shying away from the horse to the inside of it. I believe in both cases it cost them positions. Not winning mind you but at the least it looked like they slowed . I even mentioned to my wife I would be hesitate two wager on those horses......then it dawned on me I never looked at the name or number. Had to rewind the dvr later. I've said it before I'm green! And I'm following your thread as well. I see a lot of experience on these boards.

Sign up for tvg. If you can. It's a honest .you get paid. You can watch replays. And put horses in your stable. Do you kow the race and track .if so let me know. I'll put them in my stable. .....one little tip. If a horse has nice odds. Make sure your focus is on a win and place ticket. ..you always want to cash. Then worry about exacta and trifecta. ...

Thanks Harthebar. I've been looking at that website and wasn't sure if it was legitimate. Question. I notice on my sportsbook the odds are posted and then they don't change. While watching races on tv the odds change constantly up until the horses are loaded. I'll assume TV g will pay out the odds at the time of your bet? And is there an advantage to an early or late bet?
The race I was speaking of where the horse shyed was a Gulfstream Park race but I apologize I don't remember the horse or the race, I think is was Saturday but not sure. I'll assure you a note will be taken the next time I see something like that. Again all suggestions and comments are welcome from you guys.

the odds on you're sportsbook are morning line or odds that linesmaker think the horses will go off at. odds are finalized about halfway through the race..you're paid off at final odds

Thanks JBEX. Watch every race at every track or maybe concentrate on one or two tracks? Was thinking about Gulfstream Park and maybe one more for a while. Good idea or no? Suggestions for a couple of tracks?

np..I'm not a big race watcher like hart but think it's a great method ..you get a lot out of it for time invested..I actually
have a virtual stable with 5 horses who had tough trips and finished well ..As far as handicapping with pp's I'd stay with the major circuits to start with..ny,fla,ky,ca..
I think there's enough info in the brisnet's or any other of the major pp's that you don't have to have intimate knowledge of the circuit beforehand..others would argue this but just my opinion..jockey/trainer..trainer patterns..
in addition to all the basics ..speed and pace figs, pars, running lines etc

I agree with jbex. With the tracks ..... ..keep it limited ..but there is nothing wrong with watching different tracks. You may pick up something......
Like for me. I was watching a track. Saw a horse that was in trouble ....now I'll look today at the race...he is at freehold.....normally I wouldn't touch that place........but I'll look at it... .if I like it I'll play....
Gulfstream is where a lot of the top guys go now. ...for this meet ....

First time going Pro in USA one needs to do the Charity route for $100. After that you can currently renew each year with 3K in points.

Had fun today. Followed TV G and Gulfstream. Won 4 out of 11 and had the same horse as JBEX once. If I had wagered 1.00 each I would be down 3.60. Had a blast. I may actually wager a little tomorrow. Waiting on book. Ordered from Vegas. I'm in Tennessee and the first post office it went to was in western California

It's a long road tt...it can take years to develop a solid feel for the game.. as good as the book is there's no replacing learning by doing ..take it slow and enjoy along the way...don't think you've got it all down on a good day or vice versa that you're clueless on a bad day...you can have a perfectly good reason to play a horse and then he doesn't run well or at all ..just the way it is

Please keep the comments coming. No head first plunge here. I'm not one that reads a book and gets a few tips and bets the farm. Worked to hard to get the farm!!! I'll be following the contest too. That will be interesting.
I was told this yesterday. I've heard if you wager win place or win place show a good way to do that is for example one unit on win, two units on place and three units on show. (I know you don't bet show) Now before you answer let me say the guy that told me that probably knows as much as I do about horse racing but I do try to listen to everything. Seems backward to me. Thoughts?

So much valuable information in STR's thread. Also I finally got my book. I think they delivered on horseback. Both sources have a wealth information. Thanks for that advice. Bought a few more PP's and still watching all I can. I still need to look at odds in reference to value. I learned you can win 6 out of 11 and still loose money (if my math was correct) I also learned starting position is sometimes overrated. Replays need to be watched more than once and probably the biggest thing of all is horses are horses. Another question. By no means am I wanting to limit myself to only one source but if you had only one choice for overall daily racing news, what would you pick. Again thanks and all comments welcome

I think it couldn't hurt to read through the whole book but it covers a lot of material..Think it's almost a better reference than a read straight through but definitely good to have and you'll learn a lot from it over time..getting a good feel of the past performances probably most important to begin with..not even to form opinions right away but to just understand what they mean..over lots of time you'll find things of meaning to you that might mean less to someone else which is fine..just be flexible as to the conclusions you come to early on as they will probably change as time goes by and you understand things better

far as news sources are you talking past performances or just general news about the game? I admittedly don't follow news about the game very much and just do the handicapping..I use brisnet premium for $1/day for pp's
