    Horse Betting

So I'm watching this new show called Horseplayers that follows different big time horse bettors and it just has me kind of intrigued...I love going to the track for fun here and there but never have treated it like these guys do and my question is basically who here is serious in horse betting and what are the most important factors to take into consideration when placing bets? Also, what are the best types of bets to make to end up profiting after a day of races?

Like any form of gambling you need to look for value and be informed. Very few can make a long term profit playing the horses imo. High take out and tough game to beat on a consistent basis. So many decisions to make on how to play. Having said that it's a great game when played for entertainment purposes. To think you can score on a regular basis like the professionals is probably a pipe dream. GL.

Tried this and I got it to work:

    6 horse race
pick the horse I think is gonna win
have that horse place in second
Have all in the 1st and all in the third
    All with,(my horse), with all
$20 ticket and when that horse I want to finish in second comes in, sometimes a big payout can come out if the 1st place horse is a heavy underdog.

Thanks for the replies fellas I was just curious for some insight as it seemed like those guys on the show had it figured out on the most part but I just treat it as entertainment anyways.

    Great show!

Very few make money in the long run.

Most people will end up losers.

    I love the game.

There are plenty of guys in the horse racing sub forum that know quite a bit. If you read posts within it, you will be amazed at what people can help you with.

Your either born into this game or not

horse racing for me is about the excitement and atmosphere

I got the the track have some drinks , smoke a cigar, knowing that even If I dropped a few Hundo I had a great time

    there is nothing more exciting

also great feeling to handicap the race perfectly

    then nipped at the wire

    love it

If you are going to bash it JJ, at least use the correct numbers.

The handle actually went up in 2013 compared to 2012.

Less racing cards but increased handle.

United States race dates declined by 3.15% in 2013 when compared to the previous year, yet total wagering and purses held steady, according to the Thoroughbred Racing Economic Indicators released by Equibase Jan. 5.

In spite of a poor December 2013 showing, in which handle on U.S. races fell by 10.51% over the previous year, total wagering for the year rose by .06% from $10,874,189,902 in 2012 to $10,881,239,410. The figures include worldwide commingled wagering on U.S. races.

Purses for the year showed a minuscule decrease of .04% from 2012; the total was $1,123,856,097 in 2013 compared to $1,124,254,126.

The total number of race days (actual race programs) for 2013 was 5,143, down from 2012's total of 5,310.

the esquire network's horseplayers show is entertaining fodder but all those guys (even though they're real) just have deep pockets and spread like there's no tomorrow. the guy with the magnifying glass and the 22 yr old wife only knows how to put in bets, not really knows how to pick anything reading a crumpled up form in a jamaica ny greasy spoon. too much luck and guessing involved to be able to "handicap" 4 or 5 consecutive races of which some or most are maiden races with no form at all. spread, spread, spread, until you are dead is his system.

Horse racing was my 1st drug, then I moved to sports. Don't bet on the horses too much since, but when I do,
I like harness racing. A lot easier to win. Stay winning my friends.

Never got into the horses seriously, just go to the track with buddies on the weekend and have some drinks and play for really small amounts.

It's funny, I'll have a $1,000 wager going and be completely emotionless, but I put $2-$10 down on a race, and you'd think I put my life savings on it.

It's entertaining, but I could never see myself handicapping it as I do sports.

Real handicappers play at Freehold, you can find great value in their races.
