Handicapping Tournament Saturday 8/10- Help Requested

I came in 38th place in the qualifying event in March thanks to the help of several SBR members, which allowed me to participate in the Championship on Saturday. I would appreciate any thoughts/insight that you are able to share.

    Rules:
The contest consists of Win and Place wagering on fifteen (15) races. Win/Place wagers must be placed on a single horse on each of the fifteen (15) races. Each player will have a fictional bankroll of $60 in his/her account and must place fifteen (15) fictional $2 Win wagers and fifteen (15) fictional $2 Place wagers for a total of thirty (30) wagers totaling sixty dollars($60). Win/Place wagers must be placed on a single horse in each of the 15 races. There will be eight (8) mandatory races in the contest and players must wager on those races. The players must choose seven (7) races from the list of eligible tracks in which to place their remaining bets (Optional Races). The optional races must differ from the mandatory races.

    Mandatory Races:

    – Saratoga: Race 4 Maiden Special Weight (1 & 1/16 Miles - Turf) – 1:31 p.m.
    – Monmouth Park: Race 5 Claiming (6 Furlongs) – 1:50 p.m.
    – Arlington Park: Race 5 Claiming (7 Furlongs) – 3:02 p.m.
    – Saratoga: Race 8 Allowance (1 Mile-Turf) – 3:39 p.m.
    – Saratoga: Race 9 Auntie Mame S. (1 & 1/16 Miles - Turf) – 4:12 p.m.
    – Monmouth Park: Race 10 Allowance Optional Claiming (1 Mile - Turf) – 4:27 p.m.
    – Del Mar: Race 3 Claiming (1 Mile) – 5:09 p.m.
    – Del Mar: Race 5 Claiming (1 & 1/16 Miles - Turf) – 6:10 p.m.

    Optional Races:

Players select any seven (7) races, not already chosen as mandatory races, from any of the four (4) tracks from the following list to play as their optional races: Saratoga, Del Mar, Arlington Park, and Monmouth Park.

try to pick a doorbuster,(longshot),in at least 5 of your 15 selections.such as a unproven non turfer that showed good run in his dirt/synthetic races.you'll need a couple of 8to 1 or higher to rank up in the contest.in contrast, take time to review the whole card, preferably the day before,
to get an overall insight of what to expect.if it looks like faves will dominate, you might want to go with them.the winnercould be decided by amere $.20.
good luck to you ,keep posting for us,we'll all be rooing for you.

I'm guessing it's a big contest with 100+ players? If that's the case with 15 races I would think its going to take more like $150 with a $50 cap on payouts. If there isn't a cap it could be $250 or more.

IMO you should stab at 7 long shots with your optional picks and take what you can get from the mandatory races.

I agree 100%, I'm going to have to hit several long shorts to be in contention. There are going to be 150 people in the tournament.

Here you go DDT, a special HBD blog in your honor... Go Get'em.
    http://www.horsebettingdirect.com/ww...ping-contests/
    Saratoga R4 (8.5f/Turf)
First and foremost the weather at Saratoga looks to be 79 and clear tomorrow, so hopefully mother nature will stay out of the way in New York. Now, right away it appears we have a FalseFav tag but quickly realize the ‘favs’ on the ML are listed as AE and more than likely won’t get to run. The most interesting horse in this race is the more than likely post time favorite 2 CAN’T CATCH KATE who is making its third start of the career after a disappointing 6th as the favorite last time out and that was 155 days ago! Has our Trn/Jck angle working in their favor and the second strongest strong finish, but the questions still loom. THe 4 WINNER’s LEGACY would probably be my pick here in this race, although they are coming off a tough ninth the last time out, they have an impressive history and the strongest StrongFinish, HBD L8 and HBD Speed# of the probably field and at 8/1 morning line we may have found some value in our first race.

    Monmouth R5 (6f/Dirt)
Another FalseFav and some big numbers on the top of our sheets, including the 20/1 10 BILLULLU and if this horse wasn’t so far on the outside I would really like him in this race, but the fact is, he is starting way outside and will have the 6 and the 7 taking off hard in front of him and he will more than likely get caught way outside or not be in position to strike at all. The eventual winner of this race will more than likely be just behind the three strong early horses, and here is where we really take our shot. The 4 I’M NOT MYSELF, is coming off a good first half of a race and is dropping Rt2Spr, has the double positive with a decent +17.1 StrongStart and a very useable +6.7 StrongFinish. Not the safest pick and definitely taking a shot here, but it may be worth it.

    Arlington Park R5 (7f/Poly)
Another FalseFav race, only this time I think the pick is easy, the 8 MIRKA is the top pick on our sheets, has the best early speed and the second best StrongStart the big negative number in the StrongFinish category isn’t a concern having watched his last three races. I don’t see the morning line of 5/1 hanging around that high, but still could get 3/1 value out of this horse it would be worth it.

    Saratoga R8 (8f/InnerT)
The favorite here is the favorite for a reason, the 7 LEADEM IN KEN might be the 5th horse on our sheets but his numbers look strong and are moving in the right direction. A young horse moving in the right direction coming off a nice win in which he still wasted some ground and has the highest strong finish number at +12.0, in a probably field that just doesn’t include much late speed at this distance.

    Saratoga R9 (8.5f/Turf)
The 2 PRAIA has only finished out of the top 2 once in his career, comes into this race with the highest HBD Added figure, doesn’t quite qualify as a double positive with a 0.0 rating for Strong Finish. But looks to be part of this race and is probably the safest bet we have made so far.

    Monmouth R10 (8f/Turf)
The 8 RARO is coming off three strong races including a close second in which he was barely outfinished. Looking at the pace makeup of this race, RARO should be just off the leaders coming off the turn and will be in prime position to win this thing with a ML of 5/1. Also sits with a double positive angle in StrongStart and StrongFinish. While the 10 is our top rated horse I don’t like the stretching out to a mile after struggling to finish a 6f race strong his last time out.

    Del Mar R3(8f/Poly)
Looking at the pace model I think the pace here could be a bit quicker than most will have it. And the horse who will clean up the early mess will be the 2 FUNNY BELLE. With the highest StrongFinish rating of the field, and coming off a great race on the turf the last time out. His speed should translate well to the Del Mar surface. Add in a drop in class and a return to a distance he is comfortable with this guy should be near the finish when it is all said and done.

    Del Mar R5 (8.5f/Turf)
Another horse coming second off claim and second off layoff the 1 DANDEREK also adds a drop in distance and a move to the rail here in the 5th. While the 1 won’t be near the front early in the race, this race should set up for him to come from near the rear and win this thing down the stretch.

Alright so thinking a little about the other 7 Races.....Some thoughts.
Saratoga R1 = #7 Moonlight Song ML 4/1....Strong start should be up closer to the front.
Saratoga R3 = #7 Rubysandpearls ML 5/2...More early speed that should be able to hang on.
Saratoga R10 = #1 Wise Dan ML 3/5....OK, so nothing sexy here, but Wise Dan is good for $4.20 toward your total. LOL

DelMar R4 = #4 Rocky Barboa ML 8/1...Double positive SS and SF, looks like should be in position to win this one.
DelMar R6 = #4 Soi Phet ML 4/1...Double positive SS and SF, should be up front
    DelMar R9 = #8 Mum's Truckee ML 6/1...Double Positive SS and SF.
DelMar R10 = #9 Sherriff Hutton ML 20/1...Coming back after a year off, but if we can come back to form could have a shot.

Alrington Park R5 = #2 Montana Dream ML 10/1..Looks to like the AP poly and could be coming on strong to win this one at a nice price.

I only have Del Mar's form. Here are my picks ( just to warn you, Del Mar has been kicking my ass this meet, nothing makes sense to me). Anyways, here it is and good luck to ya.

    DEL MAR-

    Race 3- 1, 2, 6
    Race 5- 5, 3, 8

    Race 4- 3, 5, 6
    Race 6- 5, 3, 7
    Race 7- 4, 3, 5
    Race 8- 7, 3, 6
    Race 9- 4, 2, 8
    Race 10- 11, 4, 2, 3

I think my best long shot is from race 4. This is a starter allowance going 6.5f. The 1- Blazing Lute and 7- Brannaman just broke maiden. I usually don't like horse that just broke their maiden unless I see something special. In this case, both seem like pretty ordinary. The ML favorite 5-Currahee seems like the obvious choice. This horse tries every time and beyer figure is definitely among the highest of this group. His running style looks like he wants to up close to the front which will help to be up close to the 7 and 8, and when coming to turn, he gets the first crack at the front runners. The horses that I am looking at is the 3. The 3- Turn On the Brites ran in the same heat as the favorite. He was about 2 lengths behind. Last time, it looked like he had a poor ride from the jockey. I think with a cleaner ride, he should be up there. So at 20-1, there may be some value there.

Like I said, Del Mar has been so unpredictable to me this season. So.....

GL to you and hope you win.
