Can this horse wire the field shortening from a mile turf comeback race?

    Currently 9-1

No real speed, no kick, no nothing, on the watch list now. Maybe next time out with a return to a route.

The overwhelming rule of thumb is no. The reason for such is because as they have trained towards their return off of the layoff, they have been working for stamina and relaxation early on. They have gone slow early and been moved on to accelerate the last 3/8s or 1/2 mile of a longer work. Their natural speed is assumed for the longer distances by the trainer. So when turning back, while their instinct is to show speed, they have been temporarily dulled of that speed, at least for a turn back and 2nd off the layoff. This applies almost all the time, but a small percentage of horses will flash early foot no matter what. That is rare, but previous form can lend a hand with that. If not, you are forced to assume. The overwhelming percentage assumption will be to take a stand that the horse will be dulled by it's 1st race back and training up to it. The turn back to 6F. ( did not see the form) will indeed sharpen the horses speed back quickly as long as the rider asked the horse from the gate to flash it. Watch the replay and make sure that the riders hands were not still and down towards his crotch but instead 1/2 way up the horses neck and being pushed forward, especially out of the gate and the 1st 1/8th of a mile. As long as the rider was asking for speed, and there are no 7/8s or mile works between this and the next start, if the horse runs back at a mile or more( 2 turns preferably) the horse will show the speed that you are looking for.
    Hope that helps.
