Latest Derby Odds from Las Vegas

    From Wynn Casino

    Union Rags 9/2
    Bodemeister 5/1
    Gemologist 7/1
    Dullahan 10/1
    Creative Cause 12/1
    Alpha 12/1
    Hansen 14/1
    El Padrino 15/1
    I'll have Another 16/1
    Take Charge Indy 18/1
    Daddy Nose Best 20/1
    Mark Valeski 25/1

Bodemeister opened at 100/1, Gemologist at 150/1, and Dullahan at 200/1 back when they first offered the futures. Do not like Union Rags at 9/2 and do not think he goes off as the favorite.

Rags has a cult like following, so who knows, but I agree 9/2 is way too short a price

Yeah I think a couple books Bode took over as favorite and Dullahan got an uptick. At those prices Hansen is the value even though I don't like him much don't think he goes off at 14-1.He is a pretty game horse and I can see one scenario where he,Bode, and Gemologist kick away and battle it out in the stretch.

I like hansen, as he seems to be a game horse. But I think he and Bodemeister will soften each other up and allow a closer to beat them to the 10 furlong wire. Imo Bodemeister is a bounce candidate with 3 weeks rest off that Ark Derby effort. Looking for a closer who by pedigree wants the distance.

Im in line with you guys. I like Hansen at 14-1. Keeneland was really rough on front runners that day, and he stayed on rather well. He is an honest horse and will be in the mix for sure

But he will have a tough go of it on the front end

You would probably like Alpha then with a nice coincidence that he has exactly the same dosage index(1.67) as both Animal Kingdom and Big Brown.

Thanks for the info. I am considering Alpha as well as a few others. DRF has a good pedigree analysis up on their site once the field is set- will be researching that.

El Padrino isn't even in the top 20 for graded earnings. Horrible bet at 15/1. He'll need help just to make it to the starting gate.

If you throw out Hero of Order who was not nominated, El Padrino is 21st on the list. Good chance Trinniberg and Rousing Sermon do not run, so El Padrino might get in. But like you said those are not good odds for a horse on the fence.

Trinniberg now going in the derby.Kills the frontrunners(Bodemeister,Gemologist,Hans en) as he has sprinters speed and is faster than all of them early. He just made handicapping the derby much more difficult.

Just read about Trnniberg on DRF this morning. I wonder if his connections think he get the distance or are they starting him to be a rabbit for someone else. Will be looking for a closer type.

Its the best horse they have ever had in their barn and for a small operation it might be once in a lifetime to have a derby qualified horse. So they are just taking a shot with the hope they can rate him but his strength is running the other speed into the ground and holding on.He is a legit Grade I sprinter in the US but you can't just turn him into a derby horse by changing styles.

I remember a derby last decade where the connections started a rabbit who had no shot to win (forgot the name of the horse) with the sole intention of helping one of their closers. That may the case that this is a once in a lifetime shot for a small outfit, but you have to wonder is someone strongly pushed them to start the horse.

Spansh Chestnut was the rabbit I was referring to. Went off at 71/1 and ran one of the fastest 2nd Q's ever. That was the year Giacomo and Closing Arguement finished 1/2. Could Trinniberg be another Spanish Chestnut?

BODE can rate he doesn't have to go wire to wire.

Alpha still without a rider. Early glance: I'll Have Another, Daddy Nose Best, Union Rags, Done Talking. Hard race to cap. Strong field.

I have been reading that Alpha may not run. He had a foot infection and has not been training much. Time will tell.

Mark Valeski has been pulled from the Derby. That opens the door for Optimizer to run. He probably will be a longshot.
