All depends on the track and your handicapping style, but my personal favorite is Pick 3. I like getting value out of lines that are wildly off as sometimes an 8-1 morning line horse really should be 3-1, but some players will miss out on it. Of course when it comes to that race the bettors bet it down to 3-1 but there is still is value in the pick 3,4 or daily doubles.

Check the takeout % of the track or tracks that you might play. They will vary for each type of play. The % might not mean that much if you just toss a few bucks now and then trying to hit a big payoff but if you play consistently, the % of takeout will mean an awful lot. That is the money answer. But if you were looking for an answer like place, show, win, D.D. or whatever, you will get different responses from different people. IMO, unless it was a " different situation" than the norm, I would say 1. win and 2. exacta . However, the betting has to make sense and each race and potential payout is it's own puzzle.
    Hope that helps.

ive heard the best wager at the track is the trifecta played this way.
take your favorite (NOT always the public fav mind you!) and box three horses in the second and and third spots.
for a dollar trifecta you'd play (for instance) the #1 horse (he's your favorite) in first and then coming in second & third you could see the #'s 2/3/4 rounding out the trifecta. so your ticket would look like this:

$1 trifecta: 1 with 2/3/4 with 2/3/4 =(six possible outcomes)=$6 (if the trifecta pays $200 you get half of that as all returns are based on a $2 ticket)

if you were to have a favorite over 2 horses ($1 trifecta: 1 with 2/3 with 2/3) the ticket would be $2 total. (only two possible outcomes)

if you want the whole enchilada (trifecta payout) you'd simply double the bet amounts i have listed above.

where else can you bet cheap and hit for serious loot? nowhere.....

Like playing win and exactas the best. Hardly ever bet show or triples.

Horse racing stacks the deck against the players quite dramatically. I added up the ML's for the Blue Grass yesterday. 100% would be no juice. The odds added up to 178%. Not sure what the average is, but in this case you'd bet at -178, instead of the -110 standard in sports, just for the privilege of making a pick.

So the number one question in horse racing has to be about finding value. Why do so many highly knowledgeable horse experts work for the media or drf? All of them can pick winners. But whatever they know apparently isn't enough to pay the bills. The pick 6 and trifecta may have the most value, but they also require the most expertise. Basically, if you can't win with exactas, don't play trifectas. Unless it's a race like the Kentucky Derby, where you can stack enormous odds on top of each other for a potential lottery type payout, stick to picking winners with overlays that give you a clear advantage. That means tossing out most races. Perhaps the most value for a volume type of approach is in horse matchups, where you only have to pick which one of two horses crosses the wire first. Juice is usually 30 cents, but limits are quite low.

on a singled out bet - PLACE overall cuz a fav closing at less than 2/1 is WIN about 33% and SHOW about 33%

whatever you do , DO NOT start getting a feel by playing trifectas.

otherwise - the track, the type of race(claiming, stakes... etc), the pp's(past performance), purse size, jockey, opening odds & closing odds will all signal patterns that you will start to recognise.

I know the take out is a lot of percentage ..but you do make some up by betters playing there favorite numbers and names......let me ask you this ..if you went to the track 5 days a week .what would you be happy winning a day....what is your number.supers and trifecta are big .but you can't overcome them ..a friend once told me ..if you like 7-1 shots or around there ...you don't need gimmicks. So what number is your price...I will tell you why after you answer

Did I make a mistake? I added up the different odds. So a 12/1 longshot would have a 1/12th chance to win, or 8.33%.

I only considered the win percentages, though. Of course a 12/1 also earns a profit if he places.

    A 12-1 is 1/13 or approx. 7.7%.

So when his horse should be 8/1 goes off at 6/5 and finishes up the track, are you surpised? Quick way to end up in poor house

i have found that instead of win bets it sometimes better to bet your horse with the all in the exacta.

So instead of betting a 6/5 horse 14 to win you would bet your horse/all in the exacta. A lot of times it will pay about the same as teh win but you could hit that longshot behind that makes it jump and if your horse doesnt come in first it wouldnt of matter anyway
