So, about this 2 y/o Filly....

some of you may know or remember me getting in on a 2 y/o pacing filly last fall. well, somehow w/o making me a dime so far this girl's going to the finals of the Kentucky Sire Stakes. yea, its been posted as "My Play" for a few months now but to be honest i didnt really think she'd make it. if you saw her very first qualifier @ pocono where she broke stride about 4 steps from the wire or saw her get her ass handed to her a few times in cheap maiden races at the same track maybe you'd understand a lil better....or when she tried to go wire to wire in her qualifier at the meadowlands but ended up 5th in a 5 horse race
shipped to KY a few weeks back and piloted by mike lachance she took a 3rd and 2nd in her ($15K)divisions of the KYSS on the big oval of the Red Mile. im figuring Lachance will opt off for a faster filly and hope Lady Buckeye gets a catch drive from a name like Pierce, Brennan, Gingras, Palone or even (*hand on my chest) Mr. John Campbell ya never know, $2,000,000 (total card for 9/11) has a way of bringing in some talent

had you asked me when i sent in the $600 for the 10% of her purchase price if id be at the race if she made it to the finals ida told you, "hell yea, with bells on" but with Lexington KY being 600'sum miles or 10 hours from here im suddenly finding myself second thinking a trip out. she's in deep water with the other talented fillies in the field but shit, her main competition went off at 1/9 odds thursday and broke stride so anything and i mean anything can happen.
im just a working schlub with not a ton of work/$ right now with a possible "once in a lifetime" event/opportunity looking me square in the face. im thinking: drive out sunday-watch race-drive some of the way home-find hotel(or even in my truck), sleep and drive home monday. OR: stay the **** home and watch it on my computer/otb 15 miles from my house.-makes for a much easier ride home if she misses a check (6th or worse)
    what would you guys do?

*thanks for listening guys/gals, im all balled up about this and kinda needed to spew my thoughts somewhere....lucky you, eh?

Brewers: reading otb doesn t carry red mile action and i pretty much detest the valley forge turf club. maybe ill cook up a lobster and some clams next sunday and watch from "the command post" (aka: my office) screaming my lungs out with a Lager in hand.....yea, that sounds nice.

Lady Buckeye drew the 7 hole today for the 8th race at The Red Mile this sunday (post time 9:20pm-u know ill be good and buzzed up by then!) for a purse of $250,000. brian sears is listed as driver on both Lady Buckeye and the #5 Jenna Jen. for as much coin that is on the line i really couldnt give a phuck if he drives LB or not. he sent her to the front at the big M qualifier and torched her by the 3/4 pole.
where the hell's superman (pierce, brennan, mr. campbell) when ya really need him?
are there even any phone booths left in the lexington kentucky area?

Cecil, I wish you nothing but the best of luck. I just read this or I would have chimed in earlier.
Getting all worked up before the race is what this stuff is all about. You that is , not the horse. If you go, no need to take any binoculars. If she starts running they will be shaking so bad you won't be able to see out of them anyway.
Take in every minute of this , and enjoy the ride.
    Again, good luck.
We will be pulling for you.

im staying home and watching it with my lovely wife, 2 or 3 lobsters, a few dozen clams and some magic hat #9 and hoping for the best. doing the quick research on the usta website there are 5 horses that had faster times than LB last out putting her chances for a check a lilttle further out of reach....
    i need a miracle.
thanks for the well wishes-much appreciated

thats my "new" favorite track. meaning: i loved it before the casino but now my wife and i go together being its a little more "wifey friendly". (resturants/bakeries/bars/night clubs etc...)
soft shell crabs: love em! havent gotten my hands on any this year yet but i ate about a dozen hard shells last night. my friend bought a bushel($145) in jersey but the guy was straight with him and told him they were from carolina somewhere. they were light and lacking old bay so not exactly my style but crabs none the less.
ill pm ya and we can discuss a killer old bay cooking technique while enjoying a crab cake po boy in the grandstand. well worth the 7 or so bucks they ask for it.
Poppa, i just sprinkled a few across on her myself. She's in the hands of one of the best (if not the best) in the business tonight.
im hoping she sits back while a speed duel ensues on the front as these big races usually go (if you arent sending her tonight WHEN the phuck are you!?!?) as "up front and winging" isnt exactly her style. (see: meadowlands qualifier) like i said, 5 fillies in this race have faster times than her so if shes going to get up for a piece of the "Quarter Million Dollar Pie" (damn, that has a nice ring to it, doesnt it?) it wont be easy. some slick driving/timing and a little luck woulnt hurt to help this one score a check tonight.

the 12% of the purse for show almost paid for all her training/shipping/stakes fees/vets/meds/blacksmithing/grooming from the time she was purchased as a yearling in november of last year. so yea, im waaay happy recouping most of that $. she looked great and raced big. hell, i even thought she was going to win there for a second. talk about heart failure......
that was a long photo examination with no "after the reply photo" we're so accustomed to seeing....im thinkin the difference in her making 30 grand or 60 grand tonight was somewhere under an inch.
thanks for all the well wishes and positive vibes
ill be sure to post up when/where she's in next.

good news: because of yesterdays efforts her "next stop" just may be the Kentuckiana Stallion Pace on sept 17th at Indiana for another $250K. gotta love the Standardbreds ability to race weekly.....and sometimes 2 races under a week

Lady Buckeyes next appearance will be saturday the 17th of sept (5 days from now) at Indiana Downs in the Kentuckiana for 2 y/o fillies, race 10 (~post time 9:46) Purse: $280,000

look for the 2 American Jewel to keep her 6 for 6 winning streak alive. this girl's gone 1:50.2 and earned almost $450K for those 6 miles
Podges Lady might have something to say about AJ's streak but her 1:52.1 top effort may have to settle for place in this one.
for minor spoils ill take the 6-8-11.
#6-LB proved she can hang and is one of two going here that have yet to get their picture taken in the winners circle. could it be saturday? doubtful.
#8-JJ got the chit end of the stick last out. she could easily show here.
#11-Real Touch may start from the 2nd tier which could work out in her favor...

    super/trifecta: 2 with 4 with 6/8/11
    $10 across on the 6

    Best of luck Cecil !!

I need to ask you a question. Is the very overrated term of " bouncing" thrown around in harness racing like it is in flats? I am curious because it is so overblown in my game. I would assume it is not but wanted to ask.
    Thanks.

if you mean "bouncing" as in "bumping" or "thats just racing" where horses collide and keep right on driving for the wire....No, none of that in standardbred racing. sulky racing is much more civilized, well-sorta

With thoroughbreds, players are always talking about how a horse bounced. They are referring to when a horse wins or runs a big race and when it runs back the horse does not run back to the same number. They want to blame the over exertion from the previous race on the recent not as sharp effort.
Am wondering if handicappers say that in harness racing .

In Harness Racing i have never heard talk of bouncing, usually when a horse runs a big race they tend to continue running well as long as they are kept in reasonable spots.. BAck in the day and even in a few big races today they will run twice a day and some times 3 times if they have a race-off, as could be the case in the Little Brown Jug, once standardbreds get good they stay good for a while, but when they fall off form it's tough to get them back.

ok, now i understand. ive seen horses coming off BIG races chit the bed....sometimes that huge effort 6 days prior takes its toll (Lady Buckeyes last race for instance) but the fractions in the KYSS Finals were nothing scorching so im hoping shes good to go.
too bad american jewels last race was 2 weeks ago (well rested and ready to make cake) but ive seen well rested horses go off at 1/9 and not hit the board as many a pony player has. its horse racing-Lady Buckeye could break her maiden-not likely but it could happen....
so many ways of reading that damn PP sheet
id be happy with 5th at this point: 5% of $280K=$14,000

the official PP sheet has been posted for LB's race saturday.
some confusion between the usta site and the actual PP: the #2 is American Jewel, #3 is Podges Lady and #5 is Lady Buckeye.
my tri and super will go like this: 2 with 3 with 5/7/10
    $20 to show on #5-LB

    Nice Cecil,

haven't been on here much since my work filtered the site but congrats on your horse in the KSS. Your trainer is a good developer of young ones , just wondering how you came about getting in the partnership and what bills are you responsible for and how the purse funds are distributed. She should be paid for now.

she's paid me back almost exactly what ive invested into her. just got word today she's hanging it up for the year but will be back in nw of 1 and 2 in 2012 (hopefully early in 2012) before starting the whole KSS for 3 y/o's again....
came about it through internet research on partnerships. im seriously thinking about getting into it for myself but like anything else, it takes $ to make $ and LB done didnt make enough for me to "jump in" so to speak.
bills ive paid include: blacksmith, vet bills, equipment rental, groomers fes (day of race), shipping fees, stakes fees, vitamins, hyperbarric chamber treatments, honest (i couldnt make this chit up if i wanted to...), drivers cut of purse(5%), trainers cut of purse(5%), partnership cut of purse (5%) and im responsible for the percentage i bought in for.
purse funds are figured in at the end of the month. sept is the first month she's made $ so i have yet to get a check but this one should be next one should be nice.....but then there's unknown number of months off ahead. its all a risk. a very high risk but i love it.
