The Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission has approved several changes to the racing calendar and wagering formats at Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course.
The lead item is the announcement that beginning in September, live racing will return to a Wednesday through Saturday night schedule, with Wednesday and Thursday cards replacing the current Monday and Tuesday night programs.
"There are a limited number of tracks running on Monday and Tuesday nights and we tried to capture a share of the full-card bettors," said Mark Loewe, Penn National's vice president of racing," but the move didn't generate the interest we had hoped for. Penn National has a long traditional niche for fans in the latter part of the week, and we are going to return to that position."
Loewe added that Tuesday racing will return in mid-October to make up for days lost this past winter.
In addition, starting July 1 and continuing on every Friday and Saturday night only in July, Penn National will offer a Pick 5 wager with a $10,000 guaranteed minimum pool on Races 3-7. The minimum bet will be 50 cents. The early Pick 4 will not be offered on those Friday and Saturday nights.
Also starting July 1, the takeout rate on the Pick 3, Pick 4 and Pick 5 will be 25 percent, and the minimum bet on the Pick 3 and Pick 4 will be reduced from $1 to 50 cents.
Other changes include post time on July 4 being moved to 5 p.m. from its previously scheduled time of 6 p.m.
some of us care. they are just following the leader on their updated betting format. their takeout is still higher than most especially on tri's.. the move to thurs-fri makes sense. it gets them back in the spotlight when otb's are more frequented.
i'm all for $.50 pick-5's,the the reduced take out to 25% is also good news.now all i have to do is sort out their platter of porkchops, and,
get them on the same ticket in the correct order.it will now be affordable to include horses(?) that have'nt run in 10 months with singleton beyers, and, have'nt been close enough to the leaders to get in ass sniffing range.
good luck to me and everyone else.
It sure looks like that.the pick 5 is the new wager. I am surprised that the place pick all hasn't been at many tracks and possibly the .50 pick 6 also.
penn national has an uphill climb to get back in the good graces of players...reducing to a 25% takeout won't get them there...it's an eerie plant with a local following, but has had trouble catching on with the night simulcast crowd..for some reason i don't understand the bull ring at charlestown has been outhandling them..and mountaineer is making a comeback...there's only so much to go around with the thoroughbred at nite bettors..
