NHL Season is Returning But Going Straight to Playoffs
Exact dates not known as training camp will not begin before July 1st
- Each conference will be assigned a hub city for the playoffs
- 24-team postseason format
- The bottom eight qualifying teams in each conference will play a best-of-5 series to get into the playoffs
- The top four seeds will play in a round robin to determine seeding
- Unknown if the bracket will re-seed after each round
This was annouced 4 days ago
They will make an announcement on the hub cities at a later date. I think they will look at the virus numbers and see where it is improving the best at.
Glad it will be back in some format - starved for action!
Am curious how this will affect futures bets. I.e. if you had bets which were on who would win such and such division or who would win the whole Cup say, will those still have action considering the circumstances? Curious what books will do - might vary from book to book depending on the exact wording. But naturally am wondering how it will work out.

No, all will start later next season with most returning to normal year after. NBA only league considering starting around (or ON) Christmas permanently.

Might be a good time to take TB to win it all; they have a habit of choking in the playoffs but with no crowd, they'll probably feel less pressure. This assumes that they actually play, which is very iffy.
Regular season standings are now final.
But most books stipulate how many games must be played, and I think it is 80 for NHL.

Exactly, those fine print rules on things like this which are pretty much never relevant since the proper # of games are played will now come into effect. And no clue what those rules are - likely they vary somewhat from book to book.
While yes they vary, it is probably safe to say ALL have higher requirements than the amount of games that were actually played this season. The only exception would be books that have NO game requirements, but good luck finding those.
I think NBA more likely to go right into regular playoffs since only one of 16 playoff spots was in doubt. I mean regular in terms of normal matchups deeming standings final with all series being normal length. I am not talking about venues.

Yes, fair enough. Do you think playoff style futures will work as they were originally intended? I.e. if you bet someone to win whole thing, or bet team to win East/West, will that still have action?

- A player who makes $563,500 in a full season, would make $262,000
- A player who makes $5 million in a full season, would make $2.64 million
- A player who makes $10 million in a full season, would make $2.95 million
- A player who makes $20 million in a full season, would make $5.15 million
- A player who makes $30 million in a full season, would make $6.95 million
- A player who makes $35 million in a full season, would make $7.84 million
Yes, conference and Cup futures should be unaffected provided there is no crossover in conferences before Cup finals. May be different for MLB if they go with consolidated divisions, which would make it possible for two NL teams or two AL teams to meet on World Series.
Chicago is a candidate but St. Louis is not...the virus way worse up there so who knows. And the summer heat doesn't matter because Dallas is a candidate. Really they should all be played in Vegas because of the hotel space. Or in Canada like Edmonton or Calgary.

On the surface seems reasonable, but in reality not fair to 7-8 in East and 7 in West as those three teams already appeared locked in. Only spot up for grabs was 8th in West.

Where have you sign this confirmed at any online/offshore book? The only things I've heard for sure and seen books actually go forward with grading or voiding regular season/division futures are MGM and Westgate. Ive personally contacted Bovada, Bookmaker, and 5Dimes and all 3 have told me they're waiting for further clarity or have yet to make a decision.
Just glad there is real chatter and negotiations going on to get going.
