Why don’t hockey teams use sumo wrestlers as goalies?

They’re huge, athletic, have quick hands take up 90% of the goal. If you get cross checked it’s over.

Plus, when you add the huge pads that goalies wear, all he's have to do is stand there. No way to score.

    You've never skated before??

    Ankles, ankles and ankles

Those giants would break their ankles in 5 minutes

Not many tall nhl players, non overweight

Even the goalie has to be athletic out there

They wouldn't have the stamina to last for 3 hours while decked out in full equipment. And they wouldn't be able to skate into the corners to retrieve pucks. Ultimately they would not take up any more space in the net than your average goalie, as the NHL has placed size restrictions on goalie pads.

sports science did an episode on how even the most gigantic sumo wrestler could only cover 65-70% of the net and they wouldn't be able to move very well, and NHL players could easily pick them apart.

"A typical hockey net stands 4’ by 6 feet. The world's largest man clocking in at a massive 1200 lbs covers over 90% of the area. The team recruited NHL tough-guy George Parros to see whether he could get by a massive goalie. At first, the team recruited Tyler Tuione: a 6’4", 500-pound sumo wrestler who accounted for 70% of the net. Surprisingly, even without an NHL sharpshooter, George scored on him with ease. The team scaled up the competition by placing a man dressed in a sumo suit who stood by Tyler in the net- both together accounting for 90% of the net. However, without the athleticism and precise eye of a trained goaltender, George turned the goalies into a sieve. The theory was deduced: a massive goalie is not, in fact, better than a trained athlete. The theory rests, and you may no longer claim that a beach-ball is more effective than your goalie."

you do wonder if you could just put 6 total guys in front of the net and block everything in the last 10 seconds or something. might hurt a bit!

Yeah, it's a great idea but in the end so many of those shooters have so much puck control it's ridiculous.

This fat boy could sit in front of the net and block alot of pucks. His hands look agile.

    A) the rules say....

    B) even if it wasn't obvious that they are a liability in the net against some of the top hand eye athletic guys in the world...

Goalies are expected to get out of the net quite a bit in every game.

meat head no hockey fans should just stop giving opinions here, like they suddenly thought something up that hundred milliion dollar franchise GM's haven't

    rules...

    a) All participants must wear hockey skates of a design approved by the Rules Committee. The use of speed skates, figure skates or any skate so designed that it may cause injury is prohibited.
When the Referee becomes aware that any player is wearing skates that are not designed for hockey and are deemed to be unsafe, he shall order that player off the ice immediately and such player shall not be permitted to participate further in the game until the skates are replaced.

I would have 3 sumo wrestlers.... use each 1 for 20 minutes.... or rotate them every commercial break. Fatigue isn't an answer.

If you can only dress 2 goalies.... then do 2.

Sumo wrestlers probably scared of the puck flying at them.... that's why no one wants to be a goalie lol

They don't because if they use a Sumo wrestler as a goalie the jet that flies the team to games wouldn't get off the ground.

i dont really think that was very scientific. he was shooting under perfect conditions. standing still and close to the net while being unguarded. i doubt many of his shots would get blocked by professionals either. in a real game he would be shooting through like 5 ppl in addition to the goalie while moving and being harassed. id like to see it in a game situation with a giant goalie who was good at positioning his body to block most of the scoring angles.

Sumo wrestlers flesh isn't the type that would stop hockey pucks. Think about what would happen if a slapshot hit a marshmallow. It would deflect a little but get by and go in the net

There are some massive people in this world - throw pads on them and sit them in front of the net and it will change the game..

Hahaha, there are limits on how big a goalie's pads can be. Even a 700 pounder not going to want to take 100mph slap shots off the gut.
