Columbus Blue Jackets vs. New York Rangers // Feb 26

Battle of the blue shirts

The Columbus Blue Jackets (38-16-5) head to the Big Apple for an evening match against the New York Rangers (40-19-2). The two Metropolitan Division teams are separated by just a point and are two of the top teams in the Eastern Conference.

Columbus’ voyage

It’s been quite the whirlwind season for a team that has exceeded everyone’s expectation. The good news is that even though they have cooled off a bit, it won’t affect Columbus’ postseason life. The bad news is the top four team in the conference are all in the Metropolitan. Behind the Washington Capitals, the Pittsburgh Penguins (84), Rangers (82) and the Blue Jackets (81) are all separated by three points.

The Blue Jackets are coming off a dominating 7-0 win against the New York Islanders and are 5-3 in their last eight games. On the road this season they are 16-7-4. The Blue Jackets are consistent at both ends of the rink. They have given up an average of 2.4 goals per game which is good enough for 4th best in the league. On offense, they are 5th in the league and average 3.3 goals per game.

Broadway Blues

The Rangers found another gear in February. They are 9-1-1 in their last 11 games and are 19-11-2 at home this season. In their last six games at home they ate 5-0-1. The Rangers are second in the East in goal differential. No one comes close to the Capitals’ +70, but the Rangers are +45 on the season.

The King has taken control of the throne. Lundqvist has played 20 of the past 23 games for the Rangers and should be rested after watching Antti Raanta yesterday. In his last 14 games he is 10-2-1 in his last 13 decisions with a 1.91 goals against average and a .939 save percentage.

The Final Breakdown

Columbus are 1-4 in their last 5 games visiting the Big Apple. However they are 4-2 in their last 6 when on the back end of a B2B, 6-7 when finishing a B2B on the road. The Rangers are an excellent 9-1 in their last 10 on a B2B. Not only that, but they play at home with
their best player well rested and up to the task of defending the crease.
