    Rob Vollman's Hockey Abstract 2014

Now available. Anyone buy it yet? Is it worth $25? Does it project team win and points totals for the coming season? Your input please.

Based on what I've heard, it's a good introduction to advanced stats and how to apply them to hockey for those not completely familiar with them. I haven't read it myself since you can find all the advanced stats info you need online, but it's probably a good buy for those interested in the current state of analytics.

I highly recommend getting into the fancy stats for hockey betting since it's a gold rush of profit right now. Sportsbooks are behind the curve, but that might change sooner than I thought given the surge of popularity in these stats over the last 6 months.

Agree with you that advanced stats are going to play an ever increasing role in roster building, strategy and winning hockey games. Edmonton is the latest team to hire an advanced stat geek, Tyler Dellow, to their staff. Interesting article on it at http://www.thehockeynews.com/blog/oi...ver-continues/

As with most change it has been met with some derision but that is to be expected. Nonetheless hockey will continue to evolve and become more sophisticated and advanced statistics will be an integral part of the process. It will make for better teams, better competition and a better NHL.

By the by, the price of the 2014 Abstract is down to $19.86 on Amazon.

Ya Dellow, Charron, Dubas, Metcalf, the list goes on this summer. The worst part of all this is the Extra Skater site went offline. The info can still be found on other sites, but ES was far and away the most accessible and easiest to use. It could take time before anothersite comes up with something as good as what they had.

If you mainly want to project team win/point totals, simply look at the Fenwick Close % of each team and their PDO ... and compare that with how they finished in the standings. It's the best way to see which teams will be over/undervalued heading into the season.

Interesting but seems flawed. Wouldn't the off season personnel moves make last years numbers skewed, if not meaningless, going into the new season with different players? Am I missing something? Please expound.

It depends on which team we're talking about. Not many undergo drastic offseason changes, so you still handicap as normal, but when you use analytics you have a more accurate starting point than the odds. If big personnel moves were made, you can look up their individual advanced stats and project their expected impact.
