The Phoenix Coyotes are the best ‘under’ team in the NHL.They’ve gone ‘under’ in 23 of 30 overall and 12 of 16 on home ice.Their statistical rankings clearly demonstrate why this is the case. The Coyotes aren’t a good offensive team. The rank #28 of 30 NHL teams in scoring offense (2.42 goals per game). On the other hand, they’re among the best defensive teams in the league, ranked #4 in scoring defense with 2.26 goals per game. Unlike other teams who play a defensive oriented style by design, the Coyotes simply have no choice if they want to win hockey games as they don’t have playmakers on offense.
San Jose ranks #2 in scoring offense but their SOG per game puts them in the #10 position in the league.The Coyotes, meanwhile, rank #3 in shots on goal defense with 27.2 per game.
Recent history in this series also reflects an ‘under’ bias.. 5 of the last 6 meetings and 9 of the last 14 have gone ‘under’. The most valuable metric of this sort in analyzing totals plays is ‘in season’ matchups since you’re dealing with most of the same personnel and tactics. The first meeting of the year between these two teams was a 1-0 Coyotes road win. Should be a similar type of game tonight, and we’ve even got a 5′ total to work with.
Problem with these plays, imo, is you're getting charged mega-juice to bet these now. Nice pickup, but I'd be surprised if this bet is profitable for remainder of season.
