    Chronicle Sports NHL Feb. 26

A double header on Versus tonight for those that are interested.

Toronto Maple Leafs at Montreal Canadiens
    February 26, 2007 7:30 PM EST

    2* Toronto +155 (Regulation Only)

Two Original Six rivals from two hockey meccas will faceoff tonight in one very important game. The Montreal Canadiens currently sit tied for the eighth and final playoff berth in the East while the Maple Leafs linger only one point back on the outside looking in. The winner of this game is in with under 20 games to go in the 2006-07 NHL Regular Season.

Montreal struggled throughout the early part of the month but were provided a spark from an unlikely source recently. Rookie goaltender Jaroslav Halak stepped in and ran off three straight victories for the Habs before falling 3-2 to the Islanders on Saturday in his first NHL loss.

In what can only be described as a "head scratcher" Montreal Head Coach Guy Carbonneau will not go with the kid who gave the Habs life between the pipes tonight but will rely instead on veteran backup David Aebischer. What makes this move even more confusing is Aebischer's terrible history against the Leafs. The veteran has posted a whopping 3.47 GAA and .897 save percentage against Toronto over his career.

The Leafs, fresh off a thrashing of the lowly Philadelphia Flyers, will not give Aebischer any quarter this time around either. Toronto has been outstanding on the road all season with a 18-10-4 record and have been equally as good vs Montreal this year posting going 3-0-2 in their five meetings.

A huge part of the success Toronto has against Montreal goes to the man in goal - Andrew Raycroft. Raycroft has a 1.91 GAA and .929 save percentage over his career against the Habs and a 1.89 GAA and .928 save percentage this year against the Canadian rivals.

    Game Notes

    - Toronto has beaten the Habs in three of the last four meetings including two wins in Montreal.

    - The Leafs are among the leaders in shots on goal while the Canadiens are among the worst at giving them up.

    - Montreal has very good special teams but they are one of the most penalized teams and among the worst at drawing the man advantage.

    League Notes

    - One deal went down so far today with the NY Islanders acquiring winger Richard Zednik from the Capitals for a second round pick in 2007. Another deal that is being reported is that the Panthers and Penguins have came to an agreement which would send Gary Roberts to Pittsburgh for a young roster player. The deal is pending Roberts waving his no-trade clause although Roberts recently said that he would only wave it to play in Toronto or Ottawa. Will he change his mind to play alongside Sidney Crosby and a very young but talented Pens team? We shall know soon.

    - A couple big name players were taking off the market after resigning with their current teams, Modin(Columbus) and Tucker(Toronto), while a few others were placed on waivers, Kovalev and Berard. Things are getting very interesting with the deadline less than 24 hours away.

    Good Luck
