    are the ottawa senators retarded?

Karlsson 7 year deal, he will make 6.5 mil per year.. that's a big deal after just 1 season and poor playoff production

if he can keep producing 80 pt seasons it will pay off.. that is highly unlikely. plus he got destroyed in the playoffs.. carkner won't always be there to have his back

We've seen defensemen have great offensive seasons and then drop drastically the next season. McCabe and Phaneuf come to mind first. Karlsson's numbers are incredible but if he only got 40 points next season no one would be surprised.

Karlsson worth about 4 to 4.5M per.

Big overpayment but you can see why they did it. Hockey world thinks he's a star already and only going to get better.

I think he will definitely get better but his production will drop off to the 40-50 point range so people will think he has declined. He'll never be worth more than 6M/year and Ottawa will suffer the consequences of this awful contract in the form of overall team performance for the next decade.

i thought about htis some more, and its not all bad. players dont like to sign in ottawa, it may as well be winnipeg or edmonton

longterm deal with a trustworthy d man is gold, but after watching the playoffs karlsson wasn't effective.. big gamble i hope it works out

Except Karlsson isn't "trustworthy" yet and likely will never be. Spending 7M on a D who cannot play PK1 or even PK2 means you need to spend about 2.5 to 3.5M on a PK specialist who can also absorb some tough ES minutes. That's added negative "opportunity cost" if you will, attached to Karlsson's contract. You have to literally compensate your team on top of the 6.5M you are spending on your #1 D, when it should be the other way around, where the #1 D allows you to underpay and go with cheaper options while still competing well due to covering up their mistakes and/or the tough minutes.

Bad team building philosophy in my opinion, especially since the only D who made it to free agency that's within Ottawa's reasonable buying powers is Jason Garrison, who has not got any real reason to choose them anyways.

I'm not a OTT fan or anything, but if you have seen the contracts NHL D-MAN have been getting, Karlsson is worth at least 6. The 4 to 4.5 isn't even close. Just look at Garrison or Wideman this year. How can you not see that? Maybe a slight overpayment because he's so young, but definitely in the ballpark. He might not play PK, but he did have the 2nd best +/- on the team.

He was a top-3 skater to start the year and a prime early candidate for the Hart Trophy. He is worthy of superstar money, freak injury or not.
